I must say I love this place after visiting twice and ordering the same meal. I ordered the Turkey BLT wrap add cheese and dijon mustard. On my 1st visit I ordered the wrap only but now on my 2nd visit I ordered it with potato wedges. I enjoyed it all and the potato wedges were well seasoned. The staff are friendly and inviting, the restaurant is spacious with outdoor seating, and they serve alcohol. That's right ALCOHOL and some for $5! I do enjoy the personal touch the staff provides when your order is ready. They will bring it to you with an "enjoy your meal" when you depart. I have passed this place so many times on the weekend, and it has always been closed. I made a mental note to stop in on a weekday for lunch. The cafe is really spacious and rather darkly lit. There were not many people inside dining. About a third of the cafe was being used to pack box lunches, so I'm guessing they must do a decent amount of catering. The lady at the register was very friendly and offered suggestions. The price of the food was pretty cheap compared to other fast lunch spots. I ordered the Mushroom Florentine wrap with goat cheese. The flavor was great! But the wrap got really soggy almost immediately. I only had a 3 minute walk back to my office, but the wrap was already really wet and drippy by the time I got back. It made the wrap really messy to eat! This detail aside, the food was yummy and filling. It only cost $10 for a substantial lunch. I would come back again and try another menu item. read more

This was catered for my work. First, I'll start with the highlights. The tomato basil soup was absolutely delicious. The flavor was very rich and it warmed your organs with the first spoonful. Perfect for the chilly weather. I was also very impressed with what came in the catering box. There is everything you need for a full meal besides the sandwich, such as the salad and the Blondie for dessert, as well as condiments, a napkin, utensils, and a hand wipe for cleaning. Even though I was very much looking forward to the sandwich, I found it a bit lacking. The pesto wasn't very flavorful, and despite it being on the sandwich, I found the sandwiches bread to be a bit dry. I also felt that there was a disproportionate amount of bread relative to the rest of the sandwich. Breakfast or lunch, this is my go to spot. Everything is so hearty and you can tell from the taste and how you feel once you're done eating that the ingredients are fresh. My favorite breakfast: half smoke (scrambled eggs, toasted buttery bagel, half smoke sausage with swiss - YUM!!!) + homefries. my second choice (on lighter days) is the egg and smoked gouda sandwich on a bagel!! Secret tip - sometimes, I sub real fries with the homefries just because I'm a fry lover and their fries are BOMB! Lunch: - the soups go on rotation; get your free sample yo see if the soup of the day is for you!!! - I love to get the half sandwich and soup combo :) it is the perfect portion and the best balance! Went for lunch 2 days in a row and loved both experiences. Yesterday I had the fried chicken sandwich and got a small House salad as my side. The portions are extremely generous, and the prices are very reasonable. The chicken was perfectly crispy, not oily, and fairly juicy considering it's breast meat. The baguette was flaky and chewy, but the slaw might have been the best part. Lots of acid, very bright and fresh tasting. The combination of veggies in the house salad was surprisingly diverse, and it all worked with the vinaigrette. Today I had the blackened catfish sandwich. Again, everything tasted extremely fresh and the flavors were on point. I didn't care for the sweet potato fries. They were huge, like steak fries, a bit soggy, and were screaming for salt. But again, the portion size was abundant. Next time I'll opt for a Cesar or House salad. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. The Green Bee is a locally owned restaurant with a focus on locally sourced, fresh ingredients, and it shows. They seem to be famous for the breakfasts too, which they serve all day, so I'll have to try that soon. The only knock I'd give them is the atmosphere of the restaurant itself. While you certainly can grab one of many tables (there wasn't a single dine-in customer both times I went for lunch) the space is kind of....meh. It's not inviting. There's not much in the way of décor. Supply shelves that you typically see in the back-of-house are out front. But at the end of the day, when it comes to lunch in DC, I'm going for the food first, second, and third. And in this area, the Green Bee knows what they're doing. read more

Knew I loved this place from the moment I told the cashier my meal was 'for here' and she said 'ok, I'll bring it to you with silverware, don't get the plastic' - I can't tell you how much I appreciate that as we all need to be a more cognizant of our waste (especially plastic) usage. Cloth napkins were a nice touch as well. Now on to the food.... I had the Egg and Smoked Gouda, add avocado, side of Fruit. What I really wanted was the fried chicken biscuit, add egg with home fries....but that will have to wait for another time. The sandwich was delicious. I got the ham and cheese and roast beef sandwich. The bread was toasted but everything else was cold. It says it's not a hot sandwich but I figured they would at least melt the cheese or something. It comes with nothing, just a pickle. The roast beef was super dry. Nothing had sauce or salt. Eat sandwich is around $10. I barely ate it, no good. A friend got the butter milk chicken sandwich which was way better than mine but still nothing special to return to. PRO: the workers there are so lovely and deserve a star. Some of the highest quality food available for lunch in this area (west end to 17th street area). I work in the area and have tried much of the competition. They focus on higher quality ingredients and to charge for products that way. I will be back soon to try the coffee (another reviewer mentioned it was great). They emphasis things are made from scratch and in house. I ordered the Turkey BLT ($9.5) with 'in House Roasted Koch Farm's Turkey Breast, Applewood Smoke Bacon & Mayo'. This is a high end sandwich and it tasted that way (the care of ingredients, quality of bread). They put the sandwich with some salad in the container, I like that touch (see photos). Delicious and solid sandwich, enjoyed it. Pricing: As mentioned in some other reviews the pricing is to be discussed. I really enjoyed my Turkey BLT and would return to get it again, however is $9.50 the right price for it? I think $9.50 including chips is the right approach (I bought Route 11 chips with the Turkey BLT). You have to find balance - on the one hand we want restaurants to focus on quality (what they use, how they make it) yet this area of DC has extremely high lunch competition (dinner not so much). The pricing is not that far off, we joke that most lunches cost about $10 in this part of DC (no matter where you go) however if you grab a sandwich and chips (with tax this will push them into the higher end pricing. This is a hidden gem. I work ridiculously close by, and must pass this place at least 4x/week and still somehow always manage to forget about it when I need coffee or something to eat. Our meeting rooms are under construction, so I've asked to hold a few meetings here. I even called in advance to make sure it was okay for us to do this, and the staff were beyond helpful in making sure we had space to meet. The coffee was excellent, the music just loud enough without being distracting, and at least when we came in it wasn't crazy crowded, either. I absolutely LOVE the food and the people who work at The Green Bee. The food is perfection almost every time. I found out about The Green Bee through MealPal, and have been pretty much a convert ever sense. Their fried chicken salad, salads and pasta dishes are divine. But almost everything except the trio of salads have been delicious. Unfortunately, they didn't offer a wide variety of options through MealPal (I think just how the program works), but I have gone on to try a lot of things on my own, and even though I now work much further away, I still visit the restaurant at least 2-3 times a month. Worthy mentions: 1. The staff. Even though my time picking up food is generally pretty quick, they are very polite and remember their regular customers. If you don't smile after dealing with their extremely efficient cashier and staff, then..... 2. Green: They aim to be green and encourage dine in customers to use real plates and cutlery and diner out customers to skip the bag. I would have given the Green Bee 5-stars, but for..The only thing that leaves the place, as a dine in place, a little wanting..is their minimalistic decor. We were on our way to a coffee shop when we passed by the Green Bee and decided to stop in for lunch. Good decision for us. I can't speak to the other items on the menu but the fried chicken sandwich was DE. LI. CIOUS. It came with either a side of fries or a house salad. Of course, we had the fries, which sadly were not that great. It seems as though they had been cooked in oil that was not hot enough so they were floppy and oily. I've used Green Bee countless times for catering events at our nearby office, and am always satisfied! We typically do an assorted sandwich platter for lunches, and it goes over well every time. The sandwiches and salads/pastas are fresh, nicely presented, and most importantly - delicious! I'm a huge fan of the dessert platter, which contains slightly classier items like macarons and the most ahhhmazing funfetti cake bites. Delivery is always early or on-time, and Teri is so easy to work with - friendly, responsive, and accommodating. One of my favorite options for lunch catering in the area! The breakfast catering is excellent, as well. To date we've only done the bagels, pastries and fresh fruit; but again, so fresh and beautifully presented. On a non-catering note....Green Bee's fried chicken sandwich has a cult following among many in our office. The service I've had has been quick and efficient, and there are plenty of seats where you can enjoy your meal (or just grab it and go). The Green Bee is another example of good things coming to those who wait! It's an exercise in patience, as the food will take about 15 minutes to get to you, irrespective of what you order. HOWEVER, Once it gets there, yum! It's some of the freshest food, delivered with the kindest staff in the downtown L street area. If you have sometime, I highly recommend this place. My favorite thing right now is the tuna and white bean salad on the rye bread. The ingredients are fresh, and it's clear that they really believe in their well sourced-high quality mantras. I've also had the breakfast special from here, which is likely the best deal going around here, with a $5 sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich served with plenty of yummy salty roasted potatoes with vegetables. This place is truly awesome, one of my favorite DuPont food spots. I pick up client lunches from here all the time and the staff are always extremely friendly; they listen, they're always attententive, and they really go the extra mile for your lunch order. Which is saying a lot, I think, in an industry that can be really grueling and thankless and can wear people down. You don't see that here! The food itself is also excellent. I'm usually picking up the lunches, so I only see how delicious they look, but I have gotten the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich (delicious, and I got two meals out of it - it was just as good cold a day later as it was fresh and warm) and they're my go-to spot for breakfast in DuPont. I like the biscuit breakfast sandwich with sausage, cheese, and egg, and it comes with a delicious + generous helping of potatoes. Also have an amazing cobb salad and very accommodating - I don't like mixed greens so I have asked for and gotten the cobb salad with all romaine or all spinach. And it's a big salad. I've been looking for a good place around my workplace to get a decent vegan sandwich on good bread and I've finally found it. Today I got a vegan hummus sandwich with roasted vegetables on a bread roll, and a bowl of vegan chili. The hummus sandwich had plenty of their oven-roasted hummus and the roasted tomatoes were full of flavor. They had a selection of bread options, all of which were vegan today, but the roll was ideal- it was hearty and flavorful but soft enough to eat. The vegan chili was less of a chili and more of a variety bean and vegetable soup, but the flavor was to die for and I ate every bite. My colleague got the Cobb Salad, and she also said every element was delicious. The egg was perfect. The bacon was perfect. The chicken was flavorful. The balance was right. Etc. To top it off, the staff were friendly and were able to answer all of my questions about what was vegan. This is definitely a great spot and we will be coming back! read more
