i love this little outlet from the prices, to the history, to the fact that a woman started this business many years ago. some items obviously belong in the outlet, but most seem to have accidentally ended up there since their defects are so hard to detect. i like to go there for hostess gifts and housewarming presents. every kitchen should contain at least one heath item. read more

Hidden on a non-touristy stretch of Sausalito in what looks to be an industrial office park, with a dirt parking lot, finding this location is well worth your trouble. Most lines are represented here, with the Coupe and Plaza being the most popular. They also offer factory seconds, which are deeply discounted and to the non-discerning eye look exactly like the full priced versions. read more

I just picked up some BEAUTIFUL tiles in the seconds and overstock section for an amazing price (about $5-$10 sq/ft). The two women who helped us were extremely friendly and resourceful. They love their job and it shows. They even had free coffee and pastries. read more

After visiting their new SF store (which was swoon-worthy), but getting my tile estimate: $1900 for the minimum amount of tile I could order, I decided to drive down to Sausalito for the morning to check out their seconds and overstock stash. Kristen was very helpful and accommodating. She graciously pulled out lots of samples, lined up the tile in the sun so I could see the true color, etc. I ended up getting gorgeous tile for $175. Then I ate at Fish, which is right down the street. Pretty amazing morning. read more

Their ceramics are expensive, but I found some pretty neat & reasonably priced items in the "seconds" area - not perfect quality, but I could hardly see anything wrong with them. This is my guilty shopping pleasure whenever I'm in Sausalito. I'm rather surprised that many folks don't know that they sell their 'seconds' at a sizeable discount. My kitchen is filled with marked-down dinner plates, mugs, tea cups and pasta bowls. Love this place!!! read more

They have very very pretty tile. And a wonderful room in the back with overstock that sells for a heavy discount. We got our beautiful opal pacific blue tile (undecided for bathroom or kitchen) for $5/sq ft for the "seconds". The "seconds" are still gorgeous and way cheaper than the $27.50/sq ft price that we can't afford on our renovation budget. Thanks to Jeri for clue-ing me in on this place over drinks at Cesar (another place I need to write up sometime, terrific white sangrias!). Oh and another bonus point, they let Mr. H in to sniff the tile. He just had to watch that swishing tail of his. The non-tile stuff that was in the front shop was amazing too, just too pricey for us at this point. Maybe later. read more

Make time to take the tour on a weekend morning. Heath has simple, beautiful dinnerware, vases and tiles. The items in the factory store are seconds and marked down 30%. Took a field trip and was pleasantly surprised to find exactly what I wanted in the seconds area. There were a few imperfections but they were still beautiful and I saved quite a bit. Definitely worth the drive and will be back again to pick up serving bowls and platters after I recover from the first visit. read more

Finally made it here for one of their sales... Oh, how I lust after the tile. Never mind that I can't rip out my pink tile since it's not mine... This is a great little place and one of those places that you feel really good about spending money. Cool place. The place is pricey but at the factory there are second quality items for a good price. Second quality could mean a large scruff or a tiny scruff that you barely notice. They also offer tours but only on select days. The factory is also quite a hike from downtown and the ferry terminal so be wear walking shoes if you plan to walk. read more

Highly recommend the factory tour. They let you take pictures. They pottery is made more or less the same way since the 50s. There are "second quality" and clearance items on sale - with varying discounts. 85% of the production is "first quality". Come earlier in the day for better selection...and they served delicious looking pastries and coffee from a nearby bakery (which I didn't try thanks to a new years resolution). read more

I just discovered Heath Ceramics! I'm a potter of functional ware myself, and fell in love with the simplicity of form, color, and design of these pieces. Beautiful semi-matte glazes, with exquisite uniform application. Craftsmanship equally lovely on the foot of each piece as on the visible surfaces. That wonderful design element of leaving the rim unglazed - sweet! I'm a fan!! read more

Perfection and they make it a craft. The tour is good too. But it is the little things like this that make life pleasurable. I use the dishes and bowls all the time. This was a present I bought for myself after doing the Alcatraz swim, and since then I have bought more after swimming the Golden Gate. I got the new stuff from the Ferry building in SF, but going to the factory and seeing the seconds, if you can find the color and pattern you like, that too might be worth a look. And I totally love the Eames house numbers. read more

Their tiles are nice and (so far) of good quality. But the staff is not matching that. We tried to get their help to calculate how many tiles we needed for our project, as we assumed that's part of their skills. Big mistake, at first they refuse to help us and after we insisted they gave us completely random numbers. So at the end we did the math ourselves (10mn) and had it verified by our contractor (another 10mn). Clearly too much time (or math) for the employees here. read more

ever since i can remember my mother has filled our cabinets with plates and bowls from Heath so i have a fondness, an attraction to Heath. and as it turns out, the only time i scoot up to sausalito and go to Heath is when my mom is visiting me from out of town. she usually buys us each a little matching something because she's the sweetest woman in the whole entire land. their items are beautiful. great colors. durable. on my last visit there i bought a cast iron skillet and was surprised and how reasonably priced it was (maybe i secretly had no idea how much these things cost). the staff here are great and have always been really accommodating with my out-of-town mama who always needs to ship the things she purchases. i'm happy because Heath opened a new location in my neighborhood in the city so now mom and i don't have to travel over the bridge and now maybe i'll wander over there and slowly build my own collection of dishware. read more

The pottery is absolutely beautiful. I gave them 3 stars because they used to have a lot of seconds that you could buy for cheaper and they hardly have any of that anymore. Also, i found the staff to be incredibly rude, one woman in particular. I almost said something about it but didn't so i am saying it here. They need to cut the snoot. Nobody likes that and in the spirit of the beautiful pottery and its original owners it isn't necessary. read more

the sunday morning tour is casual and informative- a great glimpse into the past, present and hopeful future of the art of fine ceramics and stoneware. post tour, you can shop the seconds and thirds in the factory store, swim though a sea of overstock tiles and nab some great deals in the clearance section. i walked away with a slightly imperfect aubergine platter that matched one my mother has owned for years. (side note: as i was buying the platter, i commented that my mother had a round serving platter in the same exact color, and how it must be Heath and i had never realized. every employee in the shop swore up and down that it was not a color that they had ever really produced, and was just an experiment or a mistake in the glaze. i drove straight to mom's house, and sure 'nuff, the round platter is also Heath, and the glaze matches exactly.) truly a fun way to spend a sunday morning! read more

Great showroom but my review is mainly on their customer service. I had a wonderful first hand experience with their warranty program. It was easy, no fuss and they responded quickly to my concerns and resolved it within 24hours even during their annual sale! Everyone we encountered during our shopping adventure was nice and knowledgable. I'm definitely a fan of companies with great products and stand behind their products! The factory store was so much fun! The folks working there were super helpful and encouraged us to make piles and move things around as we decided on a color scheme. We ended up getting a 6 piece set of coupe plates and bowls along with a few serving pieces. They shipped this all to our home in Seattle for FREE (they take the shipping cost our of your tax which was about $65). My only regret is not buying more. I will stop in every time i visit SF! read more

I went to Heath to pick out back splash tile- I had read about their unique tile and I wanted to check out the overstock shed. I will keep this short because it's a LONG story- but I put an unglazed tile on my back splash and I had sealed it- with in a week my back splash was splattered.I tried to clean it and it was hopeless- the sealer I had used did not seal the tile adequately- I wrote an email to them expressing how upset I was - Heath felt my pain and let me come in and pick out different tile. Paul was amazing and made sure I had the correct tile for my back splash. They really went above and beyond to assist me!! I am so appreciative! read more

Took them 2 weeks to process my online order, but took my payment right a way. Of course! I ordered a gift for a registry online, and total time from order to delivery is over 3 1/2 weeks! I also wrote an email inquiring where my purchase was and they never called or emailed me back. Terrible customer service practice. If you are ordering online, prepare to wait almost a month to receive goods you paid for. I will never order form them again! read more

LOVED the tour. I expected it to be short and lacking detail, but it was long and we saw the guts of the factory. I have a new appreciation for the beauty and simplicity of Heath products. Normally I don't mind not having unlimited resources to splurge on "extras" but when I think about Heath ceramics, it sure would be nice to be able to buy everything in sight. To be around Heath ceramics is to be given a sensory, tactile visual treat. Each piece, from a coffee cup to a background tile is simple and exquisite. Their ceramic products are very nice, but customer service is sadly lacking.I recently did a phone order and they sent my twice as many items as I had ordered. I could have kept them and been silent, but (being a good citizen) I called them to let them know of their error. I received an email (no return phone call) with a standard RMA (with no explanation or apology). I emailed them back suggesting since they had paid for shipping to me (and would pay for return shipping) that I'd be willing to purchase their mistake for either their trade or wholesale price. I made no suggestion of a specific discount. They came back to me with an offer of 15%. (I've purchased items from Heath for a 30% discount and I just received an email offering 20%). I told them "No". They wanted me to take the return shipment to UPS. I said that if they wanted the extras they had sent me by mistake, they would need to arrange for a UPS pickup, which they did. In my view the issue is over and I will never purchase anything from them again. read more
