I love this place. I managed a renovation that specified a bunch of Heath tile (they do very cool things in tile), and it ended up being cheaper for me to drive down from Truckee to pick the stuff than to have them ship it to me. I'm glad I did, because I fell in love with their styling and aesthetic. Every piece complements the Northern California Mid-century Modern look that I grew to appreciate so much. The prices are... well, they are what they are. I've bought a few "firsts" as gifts, but I stick to "seconds" for myself - they're beautiful, and within a reasonable price range. Visitors should also note that they have a huge back room full of overstocked and "second" tile. This stuff retails for up to $125 per square foot, but if you get it from the overstock room it's quite a bit less - and just as beautiful. read more

Staff here is unfriendly, unwelcoming, and unhelpful. There were 3 or 4 employees standing around - not one said hello or offered to help. We've generally had good experiences here in the past, so this could be a recent staffing or management issue. I tried to contact the store to share our experience, but they gave a canned response and didn't seem to care, so sharing my experience here. Beautiful yet functional mid century modern ceramic ware and tiles. Their craftmanship is stellar. They even offer a cool free tour of the factory on the weekends and talk about how various items are made by their staff. I was a kid in a candy store (I'm a ceramic goer & enthusiast) They have gift certificates & a gallery of the late Edith Heath's more funky but fun ceramic tiles. I hope they consider bringing some of the latter into production. Yep, it's spendy but if you shop @ their factory outlet, prices on their 2nds-dishware and tiles (in a separate room) come down considerably. This is a hit or miss proposition but if you are hunting for a timeless gift or want to start a collection of Heath Pottery at more reasonable prices, be sure to visit Heath Ceramics in Sausalito. Seconds have minor or negligible flaws and color selection is limited to stock on hand. A single beautiful serving bowl is a terrific wedding gift. Very attentive customer service. Fabulous products. I started shopping for heath products at their ferry building location. The second time I was there, they told me about the second products of the actual warehouse. We came today only to find out that the items I was buying at the ferry building location are 30% off here! I wish I knew this earlier. One thing about the factory tour, if you visit it on Saturday or Sunday, the factory is open of course but no one is actually working there. If you visit them on Friday, workers are actually making ceramics there and it will be more fun to watch! read more

If you appreciate a mid-century aesthetic, and even if you don't, all of your housewarming and wedding gifts will now come from Heath, because after years of not being able to figure out where it was and an inability to plan ahead (oh! look at that! we're in Sausalito!) the stars were aligned perfectly today and I finally found Heath, which I've been collecting at thrift stores for a while. Without doubt my favorite thing I did up in the Bay Area a couple weeks ago was take the factory tour here. Heath Ceramics is part of the Mid-Century style that, comprised with the designs of Charles and Ray Eames (whose original chairs grace the factory floors) and the like, is seeing a big revival these days. The factory was bought out a few years ago, which saved it from languishing in mediocrity and brought it back to the simplicity in style and design that made it so perfect to begin with. Heath is even the first place to sell notched ashtrays, as the Heaths were huge smokers and rigged up a whole machine to cut notches into slipcast little bowls. How do I know this shit? That tour I took, which runs at 11 a.m. on Sundays. You can sip coffee out of eggshell white little coffee cups that each cost more than a set of four at most places while seeing how handles like the one you're holding are applied to the wet slip, how bowls are uniformly shaped even though everything is handmade, see where glazes are mixed, see how they determine when the giant room-sized kilns have fired to a high enough temperature, and feel what the ceramicware is like through every step of the process to turn it from wet clay to finished product. The factory is attached to Heath's seconds store, which sells less than perfect (but barely) pieces at a discount, and where you can also place tile orders (I'm dreaming of the day I call to place an order in seafoam greens) or purchase firsts from the factory backstock. They also carry letterpress greeting cards and sweets from small-batch local companies, because quality likes quality. On my visit I was lucky enough to be there for the last day of their pre-holiday 20% sale, and scooped up a fruit bowl for about $35. It's simple, clean, and perfectly timeless, and knowing how it was made and shaped by hand makes me appreciate it so much more than some random machine-molded plastic job from Target that would cost about a third of the price. read more

I've dropped by twice now in the last handful of years, and I've loved it. The storefront/showroom is so open and inviting - it makes for a nice experience while browsing their goods. I got a couple discounted "2nd-quality" pieces from the first trip and grew really fond of them (a light-green 502 rectangular dish plate 6x9", and a small 1-cup orange cup). A study showed that hot chocolate tastes better when served in an orange cup. I have found this to be true. I reason that because of the handmade nature of the products, some blemished ones will not make the cut for perfect quality that customers expect, and thus have to be sold at a discount. The blemishes are usually discolorations, bubbling, or deformation. I'm okay with that and find the discount pieces a great value and addition. They get 5 stars for their beautiful dishes and outlet pricing, but the service drops them down to a 3. It's an outlet store and I try to remember that all the staff are just frustrated potters, but we got a curt email six months after our wedding saying our dishes were going to be returned if we didn't pick them up ASAP. We thought "hmmm...we picked up our dishes...what are they talking about?" and it turns out some nice folks bought us a little something extra and Heath hadn't been able to track us down because they "didn't have our email". Which they told us in an email. Ah. When we made it over to pick up our lovely bowls, I noticed a stack of dishes on a nearby shelf that seemed to have a very bastardized version of the names of two friends who'd recently wed. I said "I think I know those folks" and they said "Really? Do you have contact information for them?" So, the gift registry could use some work. You'll love the dishes, though. read more

I have been shopping here for years and have yet to find a piece that I didn't like. Now under new ownership we will see how things change, but I don't think quality will suffer. We have been long time fans of Heath Ceramics and over the years, purchased a whole slew of items from their store in Sausalito. All of their ceramic products are produced by local artisans and made to last. Everything is beautiful in this store and well curated for anyone that loves design and has any kind of passion for ascetics. They carry not only their own ceramic wares but beautiful glassware, gorgeous cutlery and utensils, textiles, design books, hand carved wood items. It's pretty amazing and we're very happy they're located right here in our backyard. This particular store also sells "seconds" of their ceramic items. Anywhere else in the country these "seconds" would probably qualify for firsts at a store. Usually there's a small nick or tiny area where the pigment is lighter or missing, otherwise the items are perfect and they're 10% to 20% less. We stop in all of the time to see what's in that section and have almost always left with something. We love everything about this store and the wonderful people working there. They're always very helpful and knowledgeable. Plenty of parking out front too. read more

So, you went to visit grandma and broke one of her dusty pink cups, what to do? Well, there is always the $1 section at Heath Ceramics. There are some dusty pink cups and saucers that have sat unclaimed for at least a couple of years... Heath Ceramics has an outlet in Sausalito where they sell some of their Heathware and tile seconds at about 30% off. In most cases, you'll be hard pressed to tell what makes a piece a second, but not always. Sometimes the handle of a cup is a little crooked, or the glaze inside a bowl isn't quite right. You, like Boots, might think this adds character to the piece. More power to you, pottery is not about perfection. You may not be able to find enough pieces to complete a set on your first visit, so ask the generally helpful staff whether the style and colors are some that are made all the time or a seasonal one that they are just trying out. If it's one of their regular designs (and some have been since the 50's) you should be able to complete your set on subsequent trips. If you are looking for tiles, ask them to show you where their tile seconds room is. It's hidden in the back. Or, if you are looking for a bargain on cups, check out the shelf on the other side of the showroom ($1-$10), but don't get too excited as you walk in. Those pieces are regularly priced, as are the ones on the far wall. The staff has pointed out to me on all of my four visits: "you can tell which items are on sale by the sticker underneath, see it's got two prices". I've been tempted to point out to them that there is an easier way to tell what's not on sale. The non-sale items on the far wall are glued to the display so you CAN'T see the sticker. If you like pottery, this place is recommended. By walking to the tile seconds room, you can see their operation, molds, ovens and all. The discounts aren't that deep, but it's still something! I like their bowls and dishes, but I'm not crazy about their cups (the ones with the handle at the bottom). Yes, they are very unique, but there is a reason why everyone else places the handle higher up. Heath's cups can be hard to pick up and hold sometimes. read more

I had been meaning to come here for a while, but I don't have a car so it was more challenging to find a time. It was difficult to find the place because it's not very well marked from the road. The sign is on the side of the building not, the front that faces the street. Once inside, it was way more expensive than I expected a factory store to be. Still, nothing was in my price range. Even really horribly glazed and "second" pieces were pretty expensive. I was in the store for at least 20 min and not one of many staff members uttered a word to me. I didn't expect real hands-on service, but a "hello" or a "have any questions?" might have been nice. I definitely did not feel very welcome. I left without buying something. I probably won't be coming back. read more

This place is so much fun. It is like a ceramics playground. The ceramics are beautiful and abundant, there are bowls, plates, tea pots serving platters and tiles for floors & walls. The ceramics are lovely, they look natural and organic with muted glazes and many colors. The tile shapes are more than just big /little there are several interlocking shapes. There is a SECONDS shed that you can find special deals though the quantity and variety is limited. Look at the pictures or visit the SF store to see if this is what you want. I think their selections are lovely and the quality is very good. Important: parking is next to the warehouse! And there are many examples of the various tiles in use and on boards so you can imagine how it looks "in action". read more

I made a routine of coming here every Friday after work and buying a set of 6 pieces of the coupe line to build my "grown up" investment dishware collection. It helps that they sell seconds at a decent discount, otherwise I'm entirely sure these purchases would be out of my league for at least another few years. Since I visit so often at the end of the day when the store is relatively empty, the staff came to know who I was and showed some concern when I skipped weeks. I find them all to be incredibly witty, helpful, knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about the products they sell. When faced with the decision of purchasing the studio mugs versus the regular coupe mugs, one of the girls recounted a story off the top of her head about Edith Heath creating the shape of the mug to support her cigarette smoking and houseboat lifestyle and offered to show me one of the original studio mugs out of the archives. I really appreciated the gesture and needless to say I went home with a set of six studio mugs, which although may not have been the most practical pieces, were certainly more interesting than their modern day counterparts. For this reason, and many others, I love everything about Heath and love that I work so close to this factory. Everything from the product to the people who work for the company are telling of the enduring quality behind this legacy brand. read more

I grew up in this place. No seriously, I spent many long days here as a child. Back in the late seventies and early eighties, my mom was totally obsessed. She still is, and in her late sixties is still laying tile as a hobby. I remember sitting there on the dusty floor in the "seconds" room as she fondled each 2" square tile by hand, looking for the perfect imperfections. I used to browse the aisles, looking in the ceramic tea pots for a crackerjack-esque prize that was never there. hours. litterally hours on end, week after week. I should be totally twisted, but I came out mostly normal. But, if there is one thing i can do - I can spot a Heath plate/bowl/cup/etc from across the room. I'm strangely attracted to it. I always turn it over to validate what I already know. It always says "Heath" underneath. Of course they are beautiful, but its as if when i see it, I'm transported back to my childhood. The product is fantastic, but ouch--the service from those at the cash registers at the factory outlet is not so great. One reviewer stated that the service people were just 'frustrated potters"--there must be some truth to that because the people who work the cash registers were not very friendly or oriented toward customer service. After spending approximately $400 on dinnerware, I asked the man at the cash register if I could use their restroom (before the long drive back to Oakland) and he curtly said, "No. We don't have a public restroom." Odd that they do have a restroom just off the main showroom, but they don't let their customers use it. So, two stars: "Meh. I've experienced better." You can get much better service at The Ferry Building in San Francisco. read more

Really cool tile, but really, really expensive. If you are flexible, you can get some great deals in their overstock/outlet room. The staff were helpful, especially one lady who said she's an architect and works there on weekends. Dinging one star because no one there could tell me what kind of thinset I'm supposed to use with this tile. My friend asked me if I wanted to go to Heath yesterday and I agreed thinking I would just walk around, trying not to break anything while mobs of people ogled over plates and bowls. I have friends who lust after Heath Ceramics. I dig the simplicity of the styles with minimal fluff but I couldn't bring myself to shell out that kind of dough for something that I would end up breaking since I'm a klutz. When we got to the store James informed me we were taking a factory tour and I was stoked since i am currently designing a ceramics studio in one of my projects... Score!!! I have to admit the tour made me appreciate the ware even more. Being able to see the process from preparing the clay (raw minerals when they get it, not the chunk you would pick up at Utrecht) to the experimental glazing the "Master-glazer" (sounds like a doughnut shop) of 30+ years develops. The tiles were gorgeous and I have to remember them for future projects but first runs are about 28-29 dollars/S.F. so ill choose tiles wisely. The tour guide informed me that seconds run about 10/S.F. so there's room for even a budget conscious client to play. As for favorite pieces, I have to say, even though Cigarettes don't do it for me, the little ashtray is the coolest piece I saw, but the machine that does the butt punch-outs is even cooler. I would just like to see "Lady Luck Motel" or equivalent painted on the bottom of it. read more

Seconds! I'll have seconds of the seconds! I love Heath Ceramics. The bowls, plates, cups, mugs, pitchers, vases, are so beautiful and simple. The design and glaze are nostalgic to me and hearken back to the day when things were well crafted and meant to be appreciated, not disposable. The seconds are in near perfection and were rejected from being firsts mostly due to small imperfections in glaze or other small detail. I think it adds personality, not to mention making Heath a bit more affordable. Service is great and there is often a small sample of pastries with coffee for the customers. There is also a great selection of other housewares, books, and tours of the factory! Well worth it. read more

Ceramics and factory tour (1 hr) = awesome! We actually joined the tour 5 minutes late b/c the leader and one group participant slipped away w/o a notice. Sneaky! Once we joined, the tour was very informative - learned so much about their process and employees. We left with 2 beautiful mugs and a shaped tile. Unlike some others, we experienced excellent customer service from the 4 employees we ended up speaking with. Definitely look forward to building up a collection! They're expanding, so hopefully the products will become more available. read more

Heath is pretty amazing. I believe it is the longest continuous running pottery maker in America. I collect Bauer ware, which is a mid century pottery and know a little about beautiful and vintage ceramics. Heath is expensive but worth every penny if you appreciate Mid Century Modern design. The glaze colors change every season/year or so. They always have a really fresh palette. I know that lots of the hip restaurants use Heath for some/all of their serving pieces. Heath is not owned/run by the original owners. The new owners are really interested in creating a community of artists and bringing our local community together. They primarily do this in their "work space" in San Francisco, which I believe is South of Market. At Heath, you can find lots of other artists' designs, ranging from jewelry, pillows, cutting boards, glassware, napkins/towels, books, candles/soaps (at times), etc. The primary reason to go, of course is for the pottery. Bowls, plates, cups, trays, vases and other items are what people want. Tiles, too are a hot item. There is a tile room in the back and you can ask to go back there. Heath has a sale twice a year. It used to be somewhat manageable, meaning you could get in, shop, wait in line and get your 20% off anything. Now, the City of Sausalito has made restrictions on Heath so that they are not able to offer Friday as a sale day (like in the old days). Instead, they must condense the sale into two days and the line starts early and extends all the way almost to Mollie Stone's (or so it seemed to me when I aborted mission). I think I would rather pay regular price and have my time and sanity. I'm spoiled as I can go on a run to Heath and often do. If you appreciate beautiful design, you should stop by. P.S. When in Marin ... do as the Marinites do! Although production has increased dramatically since the place changed hands a few years ago and the marketers have been cashing in on the cache of the Heath name and history, their products stay true to the original idea. Heath ceramics have a simple organic beauty, and the Heath Ceramics factory has a real feel-good vibe about it, too. You can spend a small fortune on handmade ceramic dinnerware and tiles here. After coveting everything Heath from afar, I finally broke down and made it in to their seconds sale this past weekend. The charge for 2 small cups, 2 small bowls, and one vase: over $100. And that was for all SECONDS! Commercial clients include Chez Panisse and Hog Island. Cary did a great free hour-long tour of the factory. I'd recommend it if you have the time, but it is pretty detailed, and I was fidgeting to be done by the end. read more

such a treat to stop by here and geek out over the lovely tiles, ceramics, giant kilns + home design vibes....I had no idea a factory heath location existed and was on top of the marina! while the customer service was great, I was a bit disappointed with color selection. I was hoping to get my hands on a specific pink color in plateware which I discovered heath doesn't produce in large quantities + for non-commercial buyers due to issues with the glaze chemistry...they said the color I'm looking for sometimes wanders in through their "seconds" area after restaurant orders so perhaps I'll stumble upon it in the future here or at the main location. with all that said, it was a lot of fun to stop by and I'd highly recommend the trip if you are at all into the heath vibe! read more

We were given a bowl and a tea set by generous friends on the occasion of our wedding. I never knew ceramics could be so beautiful. Our tea set is white, and with four diminishing cup sizes. It's a tea set designed after the phases of the moon. It might sound a bit corny - but it's elegant in practice. The bowl we received has become our entry hall fruit bowl, and it is stunning. I never would have guessed that pottery could achieve quite this level. It is definitely worth a look. read more

A field trip to Sausalito to go to Heath is such a nice way to spend a weekend day. Unless you're there to do tile war with the 2nds. My friend the designer suggested making a template of the small-ish space that I was tiling so that I wasn't guessing on what I needed. Hello, tape and cardboard. We took photos of the space that I was tiling in so we can reference the colors that the tile would go into. And then it was 2 hours hunting through all the options in the tile room, getting filthy with tile dust. The ladies who worked at Heath were enormously tolerant of us sprawling on ground with all the tiles on the template. At checkout, they threw in a few of the more battered tiles for free. That's the kind of thing that makes me a loyal customer for life. read more

Timeless, classic dinnerware that will enhance any table. These mid-century modern inspired designs are solid and substantial, made for heavy, everyday use yet elegant all the same. That's why so many white tablecloth restaurants use them to showcase their cuisine. These plates are made to last forever. Heath Ceramics dishes are not cheap. I was initially dismayed that 3 dinner plates broke in shipment, but Tressa in Customer Service had my replace pieces re-sent the same day! Great place to get famed Heath goods at low prices. It's a bit in the middle of nowhere, but a welcome change from the touristy hustle and bustle of Sausalito. I didn't actually get anything ceramic on my visit, but noted all the things I'll eventually want when I'm a bourgeois yupster looking for the perfect accoutrements to my refinished farm table and kitchen shelves made of completely salvaged wood. I did pick up some nifty glass jars (perfect for storing about a pound of whole coffee beans). I also picked up some yummy looking toffee and artisan popcorn at the recommendation of some of the staff (who, btw, were super helpful but not intrusive at all). Yupsterdom, here I come! read more

Just one word - BEAUTIFUL! We went not having any expectations of what we would find and were so pleasantly surprised at the quality and variety. The saleswoman that helped us was amazing! We ended up going home with a full set of dishes and a few serving pieces. We loved it so much we went back several weeks later to buy more serving pieces!
