Have now visited three times and tried the same dish two of the three to gauge consistency. It is VERY consistent. I'm sorry to hear of the reviewer who had a bad experience because all three times I have gotten excellent service and outstanding food. I have had the Carne Pibil three times and it is always excellent. The salsa is a homemade delight and the black beans actually taste like something other than roasted cardboard, they are REALLY good. I have also had the taquitos pastor which were excellent and I am a die hard pastor lover. Guacamole was delicious. Next time I'll be trying one of the moles and the flan. Very confused by the positive reviews. For starters, we waited 15 minutes and finally asked for a menu. The chips were chewy..how does that happen? The guacamole was good but nothing special. Then we waited 45 minutes to get our food. I was starving so I was excited when my three types of mole enchiladas showed up. Womp Womp. Not one of the three was good. I've been wanting to try this place, which is so close to home, and today when I finally did, I regretted waiting so long. The food was absolutely delicious. I had the Platon de Enchiladas, which offers the opportunity to try 3 different moles. I'd never tried it before, so the waitress offered suggestions (chicken, pork, cheese or shrimp) for each mole. I went with the suggestions, and each was delicious. Black beans and rice were included, and I appreciated the way these were served separately in small bowls. I've been to too many places that take up most of the plate with beans and rice! Service was great, too! I will definitely be back, and I highly recommend Hecho En Mexico. read more

At night you cannot see the restaurant sign, as it is not lighted, and there is a median so don't try to turn left into it. The service was terrible, the waitress did not have a clue, and rushed us unmercilessly. I don't like the check being put down on the table while both diners are eating. My soup was greasy. I really wanted to like, no love this place. We love holes in the walls and authentic Mexican food. The pictures of the food are beautiful and the menu makes your mouth water but when we went it took 5minutes to get water and drinks and another 35 minutes for our food to come out on a very slow Sunday afternoon. Did they go to Mexico to make the food, literally? What did come out was very ho-hum. Someone really needs to tell them to salt their chips. Very bland dipped in even blander salsa. My second visit to this restaurant was horrible. Two of my orders -seafood- smelled bad. I order calamari in all restaurants that serve it and I can recognize fresh from spoiled. I told the server- who acted as if it was normal. No manager on site so I just paid and left. A friend told me about a similar experience 2 weeks before my visit. We just moved to the neighborhood and decided to try out our new local restaurant. I was happy to find somewhere that wasn't the typical TexMex and was instead a lot more fresh and light. I am by no means an expert in Interior Mexican food but I thought it was great, and the margaritas were especially wonderful. The chicken in the enchiladas was really tender and flavorful, and I did not get the boiled chicken taste that some other people have mentioned. My man got the the Chilies en Nogada which was quite good, though not the best we ever had. The single greatest Mexican restaurant in all of Austin. I love the perfect execution of the simple rice and beans sides. The main dishes rival any restaurant downtown at a fraction of the price. Several times I have eaten breakfast, lunch, and dinners here. Every time I have ordered breakfast, my order was wrong (4x) and it took 20 to 30 minutes (even though I had been the only patron. Lunch service has a 50% accuracy rate. Dinner however is usually spot on as the owner shows up. The owner helps bring out the dishes and she sees that food is served hot, presented on the table correctly, and the other workers follow suit. The food is exotic interior Mexican food and not tex-mex. It is delicious fare but I recommend you pass on the breakfast unless starting your day with frustration doesn't faze you. read more

Just found this place yesterday and had breakfast there with the family. Small little place in a strip mall. Overall we were happy with the service and food. I am wavering between 3 and 4 stars, but I'm rounding up because they did have some unique items on the menu I have not seen before. Had to ask for chips and salsa which were free (?). Salsa was noticeably different, a little more chili pepper flavors, but not too spicy, pretty good. My dish was kind of like a heuvos rancheros but with a creamy sauce on top with a thin slice of ham with green peas on top. It was quite tasty although it was a little bland. I will stay that about everything here, it was a little bland in terms of salt content, but not flavorless. Lots of flavor but more muted because all we had were things like beans, eggs, cream sauce, etc. I would like to come back and try some other lunch/dinner items. Overall experience was good - the waitstaff was attentive, prices were reasonable, and the salsa was delicious. I was disappointed that no lunch plate included mole. Instead, I ordered the Enchiladas de Espinacas (recommended by the server), and my friend ordered Chiles en Nogada. Both were good, not spectacular, but good. The rice was a disappointment (too wet, mushy with no flavor). One negative point is that the space lacks inspiration and feels sterile instead of homey. I think I will give them a few months to get their bearings, then go back for the ice cream with mole mentioned on a previous review. read more

This restaurant is tucked into a strip mall just east of Escarpment on William Cannon, but don't think the ambiance suffers with it being in a strip mall - the inside is very nicely decorated. One thing that is very difficult (but good) to find in Austin is authentic Mexican cuisine. Hecho en Mexico features interior Mexican cuisine (not Tex Mex) but as most of you know this cuisine is very tasty when properly done. And it is properly done here! I have sampled them for lunch, dinner, evening drinks and recently for the breakfast tacos they serve starting @ 9AM and they are consistently superior. Service is also friendly and attentive. The bar is well stocked and attended by a knowledgeable bartender. I've been especially pleased with their excellent Tequilas. The menu features a lot of variety and the dishes I've tried have all been very tasty. I consider Hecho in Mexico the best value in Southwest Austin and I suspect you will too. read more
