A most unfortunate series of experiences with this establishment - we ultimately paid close to $1000 for the return of my mother's 70-year-old resized wedding band. There were 3 transactions at once - a small purchase of a baby's bracelet and 2 ring resizings. We paid a total of $1700 - almost twice the original written estimate. We were only able to leave the store with the resized ring because Matt the 20-something owner, calling in from Italy, authorized his demoralized employees to demand payment of the extra "assessments" for it's release. This breaks our heart - Hegeman's is touted as a long-standing family-owned community business. We live in the community too and always make a point of patronizing our business neighbors... No doubt the owner will respond to this with "his side" of the story. He will cite that it was a "large wedding band to resize", the increasing cost of gold, a newly-installed store data system, etc. He might even accuse us of being "confused older customers" (65 but still of sound mind). But we have the written estimates, the receipts and the credit card payment slip. And the sad realization that sometimes the customer is never right even when they are. read more

In Winter 2015, I decided it was time to pop the question. This being my first time down this road, I had no idea where to begin. I knew two things about my prospective jeweler: 1) they would need to be local, family owned; and 2) they would need to be equipped for custom outfit (I was lucky enough to have the raw materials on hand: my girlfriend's paternal grandmother's wedding bands and her maternal grandmother's diamond). I checked yelp for local jewelers and came across Hegeman & Co. and determined that, based on the review, they fit my criteria. I stopped by the shop and met Richard, then showed him a picture of what I had in mind for the finished product and provided him the bands and rock. Beyond the grainy picture I produced for him on my phone, I really had no direction for Richard. I figured he was the expert here and I placed my trust in him. He provided me a quote, took the hardware, I emailed him the picture, and we parted ways. Richard kept me in the loop during the process. He had me stop by the shop after he had melded the two bands and the setting, prior to setting the diamond. He asked my thoughts, and in a moment of panic, I told him I just wasn't sure. I think he sensed my nerves and assured me he would take care of me, "Trust me, she'll love it." I calmed down, I gave him the go ahead, and left the shop. Smash cut to Christmas Eve: I propose to my girlfriend, present the red box, she says yes, and is ecstatic at her new ring. The only problem is the ring is too big for her finger. I called Hegelman & Co. and Richard made time to see us that very day, Christmas Eve! All class, from start to finish. tl;dr: Hegeman & Co. is first rate for quality of craftsmanship, and a personable and knowledgeable staff. My fiancée are thrilled I found Richard for her custom engagement ring. I will surely be making more visits to Hegeman & Co. down the road as the need for more jewelry arises. I rarely use a jewelry service but a missed ring was not going to fly for my upcoming event. I picked on that opened pretty early since I always rush, idea in my mind got there first in the morning. Not sure what it was but the vibe felt off the entire time the sales rep seem closed off. Just didtn feel super comfy with the sale. For our first anniversary, my boyfriend gave me the most amazing ring from here, it's absolutely stunning. It's a 4 carat Cambodian Blue Zircon, which is somewhat rare and is totally mesmerizing. Our first call here was actually to get a ring resized. Since the ring was so thin, it was going to be $75 to resize it. I'm not sure how sizing pricing goes, but it sounds reasonable to me. While we were in there, I fell head over heels for this blue ring. By the way, they have a fairly large selection of high quality gemstone jewelery (in a addition to some super sparkly engagement rings). So after we left, my boyfriend called them up, and he said the lady who works there was excited to come up with several elaborate plans to surprise me with the ring. :) Needless to say, it's gorgeous, I was surprised, and the folks there went out of their way to make it a special gift. I have now worked with them to make or redesign 5 pieces (4 rings and a necklace, including our wedding bands and my engagement ring), and throughout each process they have showed tremendous expertise and creativity, and complete patience and attention. Bob and his team are an absolute joy to work with, you simply cannot find jewelers like them elsewhere. Their pricing is also very fair, especially for the quality of product and service. I originally went in to have a wedding band designed and made using heirloom diamonds - they helped me as we worked through different design ideas, and ultimately ended up making me an incredibly unique and beautiful wedding band. My fiance had a general idea of what he wanted his band to look like, and they made his vision come to life perfectly as well. Later, I decided that my engagement ring could benefit from a new setting, and Bob immediately saw what was needed and made it happen within a week. My fiancé and I both can't believe how much better the ring looks now. After that process went so well, I decided to bring another heirloom ring to have repurposed into a necklace for my mother's 60th birthday. They created something that honored the original art deco design while updating it for modern every day wear- my mom was ecstatic. My grandmother was the original owner of the heirloom pieces, and a jeweler herself, so I was excited to show her the pieces. RUDE & awful customer service. Just moved to Providence & came in for a simple gold jewelry appraisal for insurance and they said it would take a week. I'm not in a rush so I thought it was fine and they packed all my stuff up. Then the more I thought about it the more I wasn't comfortable leaving family heirlooms in a store for a week. When I tried to get my stuff back (literally 10 minuets later) the guy working was so rude. I asked if I could make an appointment for the next week to come back when I had more time to stay in the store for an hour or so during the appraisal and he at first said "can you just let me do my job". He was talking down to me and the tone felt misogynistic. He kept saying it was not something he could do in one day (weigh a gold bracelet and tell me how much it's worth? other places do this in 20 mins! but I didn't say that). Then after asking once again for my jewelry back he tried to unpack it and start doing the appraisal right there (which is something he originally said could not be done same day). When I ONCE AGAIN asked if I could make an appointment for the next week to come back he ignored me and kept working. Since he wouldn't give me MY OWN jewelry back and it took me telling him that I also work in retail and I don't appreciate the way he is being rude for him to finally give me my jewelry back. I work in retail and I would never talk to someone that way! I recommend finding a different place for jewelry appraisals as they should NOT need to hold your stuff for a week. read more

This review is written with this business' positive reviews in mind. Richard Hegeman evidently enjoys a marvelous reputation in Providence as the "go-to guy" for antique jewelry repair. My experience was very different than most who have reviewed his business. I came into the shop looking to have an antique diamond ring resized. My fiancee and I initially spoke to Michele, who was extremely helpful. She told us that we came to the right place. She helped us choose the best size for the ring, told us it would take about a week to a week and a half, and we would be charged "under $50" for the job. She gave us a receipt for the ring which stated the work we requested, which was just resizing the ring. My fiancee recieved a call about a week later from Michele stating that the ring was ready to pick up, but there was extra work done on it, and now the cost would be $160. I called and spoke to Richard, politely telling him I wouldn't pay for services I didn't request, obviously. He told me I was "ungrateful" for the "nice things" he had done for me, given that he felt the work needed to be done. I told him that we came in to get the ring resized, and that he should have consulted us if he felt more work was necessary. His response was, "Well, it's done. What do you want?" I told him I wanted my property returned to me immediately, and I would pay him the $50 I had agreed to pay in the first place. He refused to do this. He told me I had two choices: 1. Pay the full amount, including the fees for unrequested services, or 2. he would UNDO the work he has already done, and I could pick up the ring, in the condition it was in when I originally brought it to the store, for no cost. Given that I don't make a lot of money, and the extra $110 dollars is significant to me, I asked him to undo the work, even though I didn't see the sense in that. I would not accept this way of doing business from an auto mechanic, plumber, jeweler, or any other person I hire to repair something. Perhaps Richard Hegeman is an expert in his field, but I would not recommend him to anyone looking to get a piece of jewelry repaired or altered. read more

Lately I have been on the 'buy local' kick. So when it came time for a sizeable jewelry expense I asked around and got about a dozen recommendations. My 5th stop was Hegeman & Co. I had only wished it was my first stop. Sometimes the term 'throwback' is derogatory. In the case of Hegeman it is high praise. It is hard to describe someone who works all precious metals as well as resurfaces and cuts stones. I needed to have an older saphire resurfaced and reset in a quasi turn-of-the-century setting. One similar to those produced in New York in the 20's that my mother always wore so well. I wanted white gold but settled on Platinum after I was walked through what he could do. Not what he could send out to have done by a jobber but what he could do right there in his shop on South Main Street. The actual recommendation to visit his shop came from a friend who attended the Skinner jewelry auction June. Hegeman and Co. had refinished a Burmese Saphire that went for somewhere in the neighborhood of $35K. He convinced me to add him to my search even though I had never heard of the gentleman before. So much for 'knowing' my own backyard. I did the deal and was more pleased than I thought possible. I also got a few ideas for some totally unique gifts using some of his custom designed neckpieces for my two nieces. I would not recommend going there if Pandora falls within your definition of Jewelry. Not cheap but I did not feel that the service provided could have been done better or for less money. A true craftsman who does not pump up his work, it already speaks loudly enough. read more

My fiance proposed with his great-grandmothers ring from the depression era. We were told at other jewelers that the ring could not be sized as it was too old and delicate. We brought the ring here and worked direct with Richard. He took a look at it and said "No problem". We just picked it up and WOW. It looks like a totally new ring. All of the gold was replaced and hairline cracks fixed. They even removed the diamond, cleaned it and reset it securely. Richard as well as the woman in the shop were so nice and professional. I stopped in for a (simple, as I later found out) clasp repair on a silver necklace that was my Grandmother's. When the gentleman came out to survey the piece, his first question was, "is this gold or silver?". It is quite obviously silver. The only relevant question would have been, "platinum or silver". He then proceeded to say how busy he was, and that if I needed it anytime soon, it would be a month or more. How he was so over worked because there was so few on-site craftsmen left. Really? Okay, I know that on-site repair of fine jewelry is increasingly rare, but I genuinely felt like me even coming in was a bother to him and his business. They did not even refer me to an alternative; thank you for your assistance Green River Silver Co on Hope Street! They don't fix, but were so helpful with a referral. So, I took my piece and brought it elsewhere (see my next non-food review). They called me after 2 business days (work complete). Only $30 (and 48 hours) for a replacement clasp. This is going to be an interesting review, since I'm not sure what to expect, and this probably marks the first (of many) trips to a jewelry shop. To be fair, I'm not an expert on shiny or expensive things, so I'm leaving it to the experts of Hegeman and Co (mostly the Co, since my interactions were only with Michelle). I ventured into this small little shop on S. Main after reading all of the rave reviews. From the very beginning, it is obvious that Michelle knows her trade very well and she's very upfront and "in your face" about her recommendations. I didn't mind that as much since everything she said was novel to me and I always welcome teaching moments. She was able to discern the type of stone, band material, plating differential even without putting on her magnifying glasses. She even offered to polish and fix up my fiancee's other rings for free! This being said, I have no idea on how much things should cost. I had a ring resized, with some unexpected technical issues that increased the resizing fee by double. At first I was a little shocked, but after talking about it with her for a while, I think the cost is justified...or that she's incredibly convincing. At the end of the day, I think this place's got me, and I'll come here exclusively for all jewelry related questions while I'm in Providence. I strongly recommend giving this place a shot! Came here with my now fiance, before we got engaged to shop for an engagement ring. My fiance knows a bit about these sorts of things, and had an idea of what she would like. I know absolutely nothing of jewelry, so we decided we'd come down to Hegeman & Co. We were met by Michelle, who was just thrilled to be helping us. She listened well to what my fiance thought she was interested in, and then proceeded to pull out different examples of what she felt matched what we were after. Sensing that I had no idea what we were talking about Michelle explained to me the different kinds of bands, settings, all of the different ratings that individual diamonds are graded on, why some matter and some don't. She did a fantastic job of making us both feel welcomed, and comfortable. In the end we were there for over an hour, but it didn't feel long at all. We left having found the perfect ring that my fiance adores and now sports quite happily! Michelle made the experience an absolute treat! First I must apologize for an incredibly long review... But anything less wouldn't do the awesomeness that is Hegeman and Co. justice! I have never written a Yelp review before because I have never had an experience that made me feel so compelled to do so. But I'm pretty sure choosing not to share my 110% positive feedback about Hegeman and Co. with the entire universe would be a CRIME! Backstory: I purchased a lovely pearl and 14K gold beaded bracelet from an antique shop for an incredibly reasonable price. However, the bracelet's string snapped and I was lucky enough to save all but one of the pearls and gold beads. A quick Google search for jewelry repairs brought me to Hegeman and Co. (conveniently located five minutes from Brown's campus). I am a college student with barely enough money to afford my textbooks, let alone extravagant jewelry like that sold at Hegeman and Co. I was expecting to be treated as such and not receive adequate customer service, but I experienced exactly the OPPOSITE! The woman who helped me (whose name escapes me, shoot) was absolutely lovely and she took the time and care to make sure I would be getting exactly what I wanted. She clearly had extensive knowledge in jewelry repairs and offered many suggestions that would fix my bracelet. We ended up going with a "beefier" 14K gold lobster clasp and a stainless steel wire to ensure my bracelet would remain in one piece for years to come. I was SHOCKED when she told me the price would be below $50 to transform my bracelet! Right before I left the shop (in my state of disbelief and in awe of their fabulous pieces) she asked me what my favorite color was. A little confused, a responded with "pink" and she reminded me that I would be called when my bracelet was finished. I returned to the shop three business days later. My bracelet looked FABULOUS and even more beautiful than when I had left it for repairs! The clasp, jump rings, and pinchy beads (what do you call those things?) were all 14K gold and assembled flawlessly. But that's not all... To maintain the desired length of the bracelet, one of the pearls was removed. Instead of handing it back to me nude and lonely in a little plastic baggy, the jeweler turned it into a charm and added a gorgeous opal and pink tourmaline bead to accompany my pearl on a gold loop. HOLY COW IT IS BEAUTIFUL! And the story gets better... I was only charged $45 for the wonderful repair and impeccable, custom charm. FOURTY. FIVE. FREAKIN'. DOLLARS. And when I tried to pay more for the charm and outstanding service they turned down my offer in exchange for me spreading the word about their business. Um, heck yes I will spread the word about how much I love Hegeman and Co.! I would belt my praise on a universal-encompassing megaphone if I could! I am so excited to wear my transformed bracelet around my wrist and to let my one-of-a-kind charm adorn my neck. I could spend a lifetime singing my words of praise for Hegemen and Co. and never truly express how much I appreciate and admire their customer service. When I have the funds to afford the wonderful pieces they hold behind their beaming glass cases, I will be sure to return again and again for years to come.
