Love this place. Have ordered a half ton of candy and nuts (jk) as gifts and for my elderly mother who grew up in Canton, because it is the finest I know of and the candy "tastes like home!" I am disappointed by some of the negative reviews on staff. This is not fine dining! These are real, local ppl hired for their willingness to work and they appear to be very nice. I even observed Jackie taking some extra time to show extreme respect and consideration to an older gentleman. I felt that we had very good service from very nice people today. My sundae made w/Carpe Crema ice cream was covered w/high quality Carmel sauce. We'll be back!! read more

Heggy's is one of my favorite childhood memories in Canton, Ohio. Whether it was a quick stop in to get some cashews, chocolates, or ice cream, or an actual sit-down meal, I have never been disappointed. This locally owned chain has some of the best of everything that they sell for reasonable prices. The staff has always been outstanding and you can end any visit with a banana split or milkshake. I'm often dubious of "local favorites" because reviewers' opinions can be influenced by nostalgia. I can report that's not the case with Heggy's. Beside their display cases of candies and nuts sits an old-fashioned diner -- including a lunch counter. They serve simple, satisfying fare such as burgers, Coney dogs, soups and flavored sodas and phosphates. I enjoyed a bacon cheeseburger with grilled onions (10 cents extra!) and buttered fries, which are basically a bowl of French fries with a pat of butter on top. It looked -- and tasted -- decadent. Service was friendly, not flashy. As I was leaving, I asked one of the ladies about one of their candies. She started to explain, then just reached into the case to give me a free sample. Parking can be tricky, even when it's not busy. There are a few spots right off the street, and what appears to be some overflow spots in a neighboring lot. read more

We stopped in the other night for a quick dessert and were immediately transported back to the days of yesteryear. Was that a good thing? We weren't sure to be honest. This is a small setup that seems to specialize in nuts as their name indicates. We had read online that other offerings were available, but we weren't sure how to get them at first glance. Only once we looked in the back were we sure that we could sit down and have some food, noticing seating in the back of the business. We were left to guess whether we needed to seat ourselves, or just what the protocol was. Nonetheless we were seated and pulled out the menus to see what our options were. Even though we came only for dessert, we were surprised to notice that such offerings as French fries with butter were on the menu, something that seemed peculiar. We opted for our own ice cream dishes...and then waited some time to order, to the point where we considered leaving. There was only one server working the entirety of the dining area, and chaos seemed to be the order of the day. I was quite pleased with the ice cream sundae I ordered. The ice cream was flavorful, highlighting the true vanilla flavor that should be authentically pronounced in this ice cream. The hot fudge was luscious and inviting, the mark of a true hot fudge as opposed to the cheap processed alternatives that many establishments offer. While our desserts were quite good, the experience was only average. With a dining area that looks and felt like it was created with thrift store furniture to menus that were confusing and extremely dated, it was not an experience we are likely to repeat. Maybe the experience gets better if you get things to-go and get on your way, but perhaps this is one place that needs to solidify an identity and keep it there! read more

Two words: buttered fries!! A couple days before my friend's wedding, the groom, the bride, myself as maid of honor, and my bf went here for lunch. I loved the classic setup of candy counter and diner all in one. I enjoyed my cheeseburger and buttered fries. My bf had the same while the groom enjoyed a chocolate milkshake. I have mixed reviews about this place. As a small child I loved going there. But my recent experiences are not so good. The mayonnaise looked gross, it tastes even worse. The waitress was okay but just kinda.. Eh. I will say however the shakes are pretty good and the fries with extra butter are amazing. My cheeseburger was okay taste wise but the mayo kinda ruined it. Heggys is an old style diner with a counter and a small sit down area. We've been coming here for years and the food is always good. The menu consists mostly of sandwiches, soup and ice cream. We had bowls of chili and potato soup, cheeseburgers and the fries with butter. All the food was fresh and tasty. Heggys has one of the best burgers in town. Our waitress was very friendly. On our way out we bought a bag of fresh roasted peanuts. Their still the same great place for a sandwich after all these years. read more

I love this place! We have been getting the nuts and chocolates from here for years when we're visiting. It was usually a quick stop so we never ate. My mom and I finally said we were getting some food this time and we were not disappointed. We split the special the steakburger and butter fries. The fries were so good and the steakburger was really good. The cheese came melted which is huge for me because some places just slap it on as an afterthought. I've been going to this cozy establishment for over 40 years! Yesterday however, I brought two new guests with me and a renewed love came rushing right back as the buttered French Fries arrived (we added Vinegar too) and their amazing juicy Burgers. My guest loved her Shake too. We topped our adventure off with a Sundae and your 'in-house' homemade Peanut Butter sauce and the amazing Hot Fudge topping. The whole meal was divine along with big eyes and lips a'smackin' as our goodies arrived at the table. The staff was pleasantly attentive especially when we requested trying out both sauces for our Ice Cream. Oh yes, and a single scoop - comes as a large double! Plenty to eat and my guests loved their first visit along with it's old-fashioned 'take-me-back-when' era that embraced them with pure joy! Thank you Heggy's. Keep up the good work! 11/25/2018 Since I can remember when my parents moved to Canton, Ohio in 1945 I've been eating Heggy's candy, back then I was just a small boy and they lived just a few block up the road on Rosewood Lane and I believed the cost at that time was $.25 a #, time sure has changed. My parent then moved back to West Virginia, but we still had to have Heggy's candy all of the time. Now that I'm old I used to make the trip to Canton a couple of time a year to get their candy. Needless to say I'm so much older now and I'm sure glad they got it setup so I can call and place my order and have it shipped to me, with out saying I've always had some of their candy in the house during the Christmas season every year since 1945 and this year will be no different. As long as I'm able I will always be ordering the candy, I've got some many people hooked on this candy they every started getting some every year, hope I will still have many more years to enjoy this wonderful candy, keep up the good work. We stopped in an hour before close. Although there was several of us, the young guy waiting on us could not have been more rude. We seemed to be inconveniencing him. This is the second time we had him wait in us and had the same attitude. The ice cream is great but horrible service. Although we got a banana split that had no fudge or pineapple sauce- all strawberry and a peanut butter and fudge Sundae that was missing the peanut butter. read more

Really thought I would have a more positive experience here. I walked in and had four kids with me. I found the sign that said something like "place to go orders here" and I stood in front of it for a good 10 mins waiting to be helped. Many people came up behind with their checks since they had dined in. During this time I can see how busy everyone is so at first I'm ok. But after 5 mins of not being acknowledged, I start to wonder if I'm even in the right place. I reassure myself by rereading the sign and stay put. Someone comes up from behind the counter and I think, "finally, I can order and get going.." I was wrong. She announced, "Anyone paying their check?".... Ummmm hello, I'm here and I would like to order... I thought about saying it out loud but I'm a bit shy and just hang tight. The lady cashes out about three people who are leaving and then she disappears. Wait, what about me? Am I in the wrong spot? Do I not look like I need help? I reassure the kids I have with me that it will just be a few more minutes. A gentleman behind the counter looks at me and passes by...he passes by again.... On his way back he asks with a puzzled look, "Do you need help?" .... No sir, I come in and just stand in front of the "to go line" for fun. "Yes, I would like to place a to go order, please." He takes my order and then we wait about 15 mins for our food and leave. I had read so many positive things about this place and wanted to stop in while passing through the area. I haven't lived in Canton for over 30 years but every year when I visit - I have to go to Heggy's for some comfort treats. The restaurant offers little parking because of its tinier size, so be prepared to struggle to find a place to park, don't worry though because once a spot is found it will be worth it. Upon entering the restaurant the ambiance of the 1950's classic diner is evident, complete with black and white tile floors and slightly chipping paint. Like I stated earlier, the restaurant is rather small with only about 8 hard wooden booths and a few bar stools for sitting, so typically people are lined up out the door to get a seat, especially during their rushes. The barstools and booths appear to be the same ones originally installed at the opening of the store, which I think adds a touch of charm to the classic restaurant.I have found going at odd times, like 2:00 pm, allows for a much better chance of getting seated right away. The aroma of burgers, fries, chocolates, and roasted nuts is the first thing I noticed when I walked through the door. The candy and nut counter is directly to my left and I know I will be making a stop there later. Behind the counter the vats of nuts are swirling with salt and butter to add a one of a kind flavor only found at Heggy's. I am always greeted with a warm welcome by the waitresses who work. They have a way of making you feel so at home, which makes for a fabulous dining experience. When they get busy though, the service does become a little slow because they don't have a bunch of people on staff , but most of the people working there have been a member of the staff since the beginning and have no plans on leaving. They make everything to order which takes a lot more time than at other restaurants. Typically the waitresses are speedy with making sure I have plenty to drink and the food is prepared as quickly as possible. I love that they keep with the classic diner feel by writing with paper and pen when they take your order and they don't make unnecessary updates. When it came time to order my mom opted for the six-inch coney with the works. This came with Heggy's made from scratch sauce, onions, relish, and mustard. She also got a side of their buttered fries. I chose the bacon cheeseburger with lettuce, mayonnaise, and tomato. I also chose to get a side of buttered fries. Their fries are freshly prepared and then topped with a single slice of butter. I personally have only seen this done here and the fries alone are reason enough for me to continue to come back to Heggy's time and time again. The food arrived to the table after about fifteen minutes of waiting. The food was served on beige plastic plates that were plain enough to let our food be the center of attention. The burger was piled high with crisp green lettuce and ripe red tomatoes. It was juicy and tender and almost melted in my mouth as I took the first bite. It was delicious and sizzling with heat, like they had just taken it off the grill. The butter slid down the hot fries that were sitting in the plastic bowl next to my nearly empty plate. I picked one up and dipped it in a cool dollop of ketchup. They had a sweet and salty flavor from the mixture of salt, butter, and ketchup. I didn't think anything would top that cheeseburger but these fries sure did. As if I hadn't eaten enough the waitress came back to clear our plates and offer dessert. How could I say no to the proposition of more delicious food? They had a plethora of sundae options to choose from and the topping choices were boundless. I decided to go with the turtle sundae. It came with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, caramel, and Heggy's pecans. I made the right choice for sure. When the waitress returned to my table the sundae was piled high with flowing rivers of chocolate and caramel cascading down the side of the ice cream. It tasted sweet with a hint of salty crunch from the pecans. It was to die for! After devouring the whole sundae in record time and nearly biting my mom's hand off when she went for a bite, I was certain I was going to need rolled out of the restaurant, like Violet in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I was so stuffed, and undoubtedly entering into a food coma. I boxed up what little remained of my meal and took a look at the bill. The total cost for all this food was $22.75. I had gotten so much food, good service, and the cost was that low. It's rather unheard of in this day and age to go anywhere and receive good food, good service, and a good price, but somehow Heggy's manages to complete all three. read more

I went to Heggy's last Saturday with my sister. I had a gift certificate for $10.00 that was a gift from my sister that was 3 years old. It had the top torn off from wear but it still showed the Heggys name and address with the amount and the date. I told the waitress we grew up 2 blocks from there and we went there all our childhood along with my other 11 brothers and sisters, most of whom still live in Canton and still go there. I asked the waitress if they would accept my $10.00 gift certificate even though it was a bit frayed...it showed everything else on it. She said she would ask a manager and let me know. She came back and stated...the manager said he would not accept it. I asked her...why????....everything shows that it was issued by Heggy's.... Including the date and the amount of $10.00. She said...sorry.,we can't accept it. I really wanted to just get up and leave as I was shocked as was my sister. Well...we will never go there again. I though what an extremely poor decision by the manager. Does he realize the bad feeling he left us with which tainted all the good memories we had....and all for a measly $10.00.
