Heidelberg Lodges is an old-school facility on the bank of the Comal River. It provides the basics: rooms w kitchens, pool, game room ( with pool table, pinball, etc. No electronics) nothing to do but relax and enjoy the beautiful setting. Poorly maintained rooms. Don't provide normal hotel amenities, such as towels for the pool. Terribly outdated rooms, last updated maybe 60 years ago? Water stains on the foam ceiling tiles. A laughably small toilet area. A kitchenette with a stove that is intentionally disabled. Small, old, expensive. Kitchen cabinets with no plated or cups or cookware. Badly wasted space, having an unusable kitchenette. As a kid I came here with family every summer. Some of my best memories were here I was extremely excited to return after around 30 years. They haven't done a single update to the rooms in the past 30 years. You can get a real hotel for less money. You can stay in a nicer hotel or water park more conveniently located for less money. We checked out a whole day early. read more

This place is the biggest dumpster fire imaginable. Twenty years ago, the family that owned this property kept it meticulously clean and well maintained. As a result, families returned every year and many great memories were made. However, several years ago the property was sold and has progressively gone downhill. The cabins are no longer maintained. For instance, duct tape is frequently used to "repair" broken mini blinds, curtains, etc. The bathroom ceiling panels in our cabin were stained, broken and exposing the crawl space above, there was a hole in the bedroom ceiling, and the carpet was filthy to the point our feet turned black after walking on it. No one expects it to be 5 Stars, but clean and well maintained is the bare minimum. To make matters worse, the manager is extremely rude, argumentative and seems to lack awareness that customers have other lodging options and will not return if treated badly. This place is pure trash, fire Hazard. The toilet is not bolted to the floor, fridge blinking... No utinsels in the kitchen, not even a cup. The web page says that service dogs are welcome but I was questioned what service my dog provided and when I told them anxiety, was kicked out. The was after the managers were in my face shaking and yelling at me for having a 5 lbs dog. There were other dogs there that was not checked! The manager girl kicked us out and then tried to charge my card the full price! Ruined our vacation! The manager is a liar and said she had offered us boarding options... she did not we were asked to leave! Even a 5 star nice motel will allow a service dog. We will never go back, the rooms are dirty, a fire hazard and rude management acting like we are at a five star. We thought the ceiling was gonna cave in. read more

We have been going here for 20 years. After our experience this weekend we will no longer return. The manager was rude, shouted at my daughter and had her in tears. We spent over $3k and parts of our rooms were held with duct tape. Toilets not working properly and rusted furnishings. We have always considered this a glamping, rustic experience but this place has gone rapidly downhill. We rented both top and bottom units and they were terrible. The manager was the icing on the cake. Many guests were saying until she's gone they won't be returning which is sad as they have been going like us for 20 plus years. Very sad. read more

Michelle Krahn (manager) and Chris Mock (owner) mistreated/threatened little children amongst adult guest while we were there last week. They put a big glass jar of ashes on their front desk that says (Ashes of guests - see picture below that shows front desk of Heidleberg Lodge) and told little children (ages 5 - 9 years old) that this will be their ashes if they act up. This was said like the evil voice in Wizard of OZ when the witch threatens Dorothy. These little children did nothing at all to them or the property. What kind of person would harm a child's mind like this? The children were having nightmares bc of Michelle and Chris's actions. There also was a policeman that came to the property while we were there in the pool to investigate this. I want to ask Chris and Michelle why they would harm our children's mind like this? Our family has been going to this dump for 50 years and never had any issues. But with this new management they have already ran off several kind hearted souls. The former owners use to welcome us and treat us kindly. But enough is enough and the rest of the people need to know who and what they are about. Thank you for listening. read more

Obviously if you're really expecting a 5 star resort, pony up the Bucks, and go to San Antonio Hilton. That said, the cottages were cute, if dated. More importantly, they were clean. The pool was algae free, yet not over-chlorinated. No bugs. Nice to see deer wander so close and content. The gameroom had several CLASSIC games. Video Games, Air Hockey, Skill Cranes, Billiards, and Table Tennis for starters. [DID that other review say Queen sized beds, too small? Really?] The staff did a fine balancing act between checking in - out with friendly precision, and off-hand concierge service. Yeah, there's a 1970's vibe... But remember respectful service? They never lost it. It is off the beaten path, but worth seeking. CLOSE to The SCHLITTERBAHN, considering how much you'll be walking INSIDE, heh heh) Actually it is closer to the main gate of The Schltterbahn, than the BACK CORNER OF THE SHITTERBAHN IS! Oh and Saturday Overnite during my stay, all of New Braunfels got pummeled with 5" of rain, my cabin was warm and dry. Not sure I would even let curiosity about OTHER hotels in New Braunfels sway my intention of keeping this as my DEFAULT Lodging when in region. read more

It's 3:11 in the morning as I write this review, laying awake from the noises, creaks, pops, cracks from the foot traffic above me. **WARNING** Read Ken W's description of the noise generated from the rooms above. If you want to actually sleep at night avoid a downstairs room. AND DO NOT PLAN ON RETIRING EARLY FOR THE EVENING. Bring earplugs or noise canceling earphones. The noise was so bad it actually woke up my wife, who sleep through Hurricane Harvey in Houston. Not kidding. Unbelievable racket from normal foot traffic from above. I don't believe that the upstairs occupants are trying deliberately to sound like water buffaloes at full gallop. **See and heed the warnings about the condition of the property. ** No updates have been made to the property since circa 1978, seemingly. "Bathrooms" are "truck stop-ish". Overall condition of rooms are rundown, dated, and dilapidated. The huge pool was filthy with leaf debris and sand/dirt. On the upside, is the swimming in the river and fishing for the kiddos in the adjacent river. Also, proximity to town and NB activities and restaurants. You may want to borrow your brother-in-law's RV to actually sleep in however. Good luck... read more

Could. Not. Sleep. I will never ever stay there again. The rooms are stacked and if you stay downstairs in the two bedroom you will hear every conversation, footstep, sneeze, and fart coming from upstairs. Also, the room itself was old, all the linens were worn out, the bathroom was tiny! You actually have to turn to the side to squeeze by the sink to get to the toilet! I so wanted to love this place, all the reviews I read were so positive! Plus the location and price! But not worth it if you can't sleep and recharge to continue enjoying NB. This has been a favorite vacation spot for our extended family and friend group for many years but unfortunately this trip was not the same. The cabins were never anything great but we loved the set-up of the pool, river and game room so we overlooked the fact that we were paying 5-star pricing for 1-star accommodations. At this point, the cabins are becoming hazardous. They are in need of major repair and maintenance. There is duct tape and shoddy repairs throughout the place. The manager is extremely rude and acts as if the guests are a nuisance and that trickles down to the staff. The staff used to be friendly and welcoming and even remember us by name because we have been going there for so long. We have always been courteous guests that believe in cleaning up after ourselves and trying to make things even better than they were found and had no issues during any other stay over the years. We were talked to horribly by the manager over something so minor. Several other guests that weren't in our party commented on her attitude towards guests as well. Zero hospitality skills. I am saddened to say that we will be looking for a new place to stay in New Braunfels to start making memories. read more

There is a new Manager ever since then it has gone downhill. They made my daughter cry in the game room. It's very sad because we truly loved this place. We will not be coming back after this altercation, we have been going here for at least 18 years and after they made my daughter cry and accused her of something she didn't do we told them we will not be coming back. My daughter was carrying three cups of dip and dots and she dropped them on the counter because they were falling out of her hand. She asked them the price and they ignored her after the third time they finally told her the price in a rude manner. She then left and went back to play games. After she was holding the door for our friends little girl so she could talk to her mom inside the game room. The manager then yelled at her to close the door, my daughter replied "oh she's just waiting for her daughter to come inside" The managers response was "I have had enough of you and you need to leave" than she supposedly claimed that my daughter was throwing ice cream and cash at her employees, when in reality she was just asking for the price and setting the ice cream on the counter. The altercation escalated and the manager renounced what she said saying that she never said " You threw ice cream and cash at my employees" when our whole family heard her say those words. Our stay at Heidelberg Lodge was just horrible because we spent around 3000 dollars just to be treated with ill hospitality. I don't recommend staying here, save your money. read more

Heidelberg Lodges, the A-Frames/Whataburger Hotel by the river. You were a good time. Bad: you have to book for a three night minimum when most people don't go but for two. Lots (and lots) of kids and families there for the big pool and easy access to the river. The units are at least 50 years old and look it. The beds are small. Good: close to a great part of the river for some relaxin'. Not too bad on the price. Good crowd. Great pools. You're probably too drunk from your activities to care about all the 'bad' stuff. read more

Had reservations and deposit on dates and cabin with confirmations since 2019 and just learned my dates had been moved last week for this coming summer. We really enjoyed our stay at The Heidelberg Lodges. The manager, Chris was very knowledgeable about the events and festivities around New Braunfels. The lodges are quaint and right at the head waters of the Comal River. You can actually see the bubbles coming up from the Comal Springs. Fun times! read more

This place is an absolute dump. Obviously built in the 1950's and never updated since. The cabins are so small and outdated. No free WiFi. The bathroom is so small you have to sit sideways on the toilet or you're in the shower curtain. And they charge over $200 a night for this???? They called us the morning of our check in to tell us they'd turned off the gas for about a week. We had to ask for a discount. Really? You're going to limit any food preparation and not offer a discount? The only nice thing about the place is the huge pool where everyone hangs out because their rooms can't contain them. Sad. Was really looking forward to this with the family but will not come back. read more

Heidelberg Lodges are clean and the staff is friendly. They are located close to Gruene and Schlitterbahn. The grounds have a nice, big swimming pool, and you can walk along the Comal, although you can't tube from this location. The cabins have a small kitchen with fridge, microwave, stove, coffee pot and toaster. The decor is dated, but comfortable. One downside - the WiFi is not reliable. I was given a password that did not work. When I phoned the office, they said It works best outside or close to the office. read more

I have been going to this place since the mid 70's as a child my with my parents. I then brought my husband and kids to carry on tradition. I booked the same week and cabin every year. When Covid hit my reservation was cancelled which totally understood, so I had them keep deposit and booked for the next year. I received confirmation and out of no where almost a year later I find out (not from them) that my reservation had been moved. They gave to someone else even though it was booked for me. Pretty sad when I have been going to this place for years and I am told that the people they gave my cabin to "can't be touched". Really disappointed to be treated like that. These rooms were built in the 1950s and don't be too alarmed by the mold. It is very slight. Bring extra pillows and good pain medication to help with the neck and back pain from the beds. Drink plenty of alcohol and pass out as the noise coming from the room above you will make sleeping a challenge. Call once a month to confirm your room reservation just in case. They lose them from time to time. If you don't like the sound of water buffalo above you, try to get the top rooms. In either case, you'll need a large fan or swamp cooler to supplement the semi-cool ac. I highly recommend bringing a toilet plunger and wearing flip flops to the bathroom. Eating smaller meals will help from the constant fear of poop water spilling out down your legs. The selling points would be the vending machines which provide ice cream for breakfast, the extra cool pool, the game room, and the proximity to the comal river. Expect a few snakes, but they are usually nonvenomous. 35 to 50 bucks a night would be fair, but at 250 plus, I feel guilty for supporting someone's drug habit. That must be where the profits go as it is surely not reinvested in the property. read more

I've ALWAYS LOVED this place. This year marked my 44th year of coming to this place. However, my love turned to disappointment. During this past year my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. My family asked what he wanted to do over the year and one of his wishes was for our entire family to come to the place we all group up spending our summers. I made the reservation, for 3 rooms and we were all excited to be together. However, my nephew joined the service and during the last month found out date for leaving was for boot camp. We did not know the exact date, to start with but once we realized I called to cancel ONLY my brothers room. A couple days later I received a call from the manager saying I was still responsible for the $200.00 deposit for my brothers room. We needed to cancel a month a head of time. I explained the situation and was told "sorry, you are still responsible". Had it not been for the fact that we promised my dad, and my kids, grandkids, and my sisters family were still coming, I would have just canceled it. What happened to the place. What happened to caring about the people and families. I guess it's the same as everywhere else. It's all about the money. Oh, and I forgot to mention. They made the money on that room. It was rented for the weekend. Not sure what we're will do from this point forward. I was raised here and I raised my kids here and now my grandkids. Guess I'll be looking for a new place to share with my family. read more

Being my first trip to the river, this place was a great start. If you are traveling with a large group or small kids, this is a great option as there is something for everyone. Being right on the start of the river, you can hang out on the banks, rent a paddle boat or kayak, play in the pool or hang out in the game room. It reminded me of a 70's family resort. I refer to the rooms as "rustic" Pros: everything above, card reader door access, super clean, easy access, family environment. Cons: we were in unit 2 (upstairs by the pool) - carpet on balcony needs to be replaced BADLY, no shuttle to the river - I think that would be an awesome service, if you like to go to sleep early, don't stay in the pool area, bathroom is pretty small but we had four women staying in one cabin and managed ok. No inside living area - not necessarily a con. Gets you outside. Overall I would definitely go back with family but for a singles group, I would probably stay on the Guadalupe. read more

You can't get much on the water with a pool, so for where it is and being able to book so last minute it was perfect. But, wow it is outdated. The beds were horrible! The ceiling had holes that just freaked me out. I was so scared a rat or mouse would fall out. The main thing that pissed me off was we asked in advance about the stove and oven. They told us what dishes were there and we packed foods to make. But, once we got there the oven didn't work! The people in the office were very rude about it too. The toilet got clogged twice while we were there and we had to use the plunger ourselves. We had to walk across the busy parking lot to the office twice to get the plunger. My husband called it his walk of shame. The restroom was tiny. There is no way more than one person could be in there. But, we didn't go to hang out in the room. The location is nice, but they need to spend a couple $100 on each room and make updates. Also, the pool could use more steps. The pool was outdated too, but the kids liked it. I would consider staying again but at least we know what we're going into. read more
