Scaring children to the point of nightmares

Michelle Krahn (manager) and Chris Mock (owner) mistreated/threatened little children amongst adult guest while we were there last week. They put a big glass jar of ashes on their front desk that says (Ashes of guests - see picture below that shows front desk of Heidleberg Lodge) and told little children (ages 5 - 9 years old) that this will be their ashes if they act up. This was said like the evil voice in Wizard of OZ when the witch threatens Dorothy. These little children did nothing at all to them or the property. What kind of person would harm a child's mind like this? The children were having nightmares bc of Michelle and Chris's actions. There also was a policeman that came to the property while we were there in the pool to investigate this. I want to ask Chris and Michelle why they would harm our children's mind like this? Our family has been going to this dump for 50 years and never had any issues. But with this new management they have already ran off several kind hearted souls. The former owners use to welcome us and treat us kindly. But enough is enough and the rest of the people need to know who and what they are about. Thank you for listening.

I have been coming here for 23 years...I am 23 years old. This place has been like a second home to me for my entire life. It's the perfect hidden gem in New Braunfels, Texas. Right on the Comal River, I can guarantee that your family and Friends will not be disappointed!

Outdoor seating and best swimming /social pool ever!

Obviously if you're really expecting a 5 star resort, pony up the Bucks, and go to San Antonio Hilton. That said, the cottages were cute, if dated. More importantly, they were clean. The pool was algae free, yet not over-chlorinated. No bugs. Nice to see deer wander so close and content. The gameroom had several CLASSIC games. Video Games, Air Hockey, Skill Cranes, Billiards, and Table Tennis for starters. [DID that other review say Queen sized beds, too small? Really?] The staff did a fine balancing act between checking in - out with friendly precision, and off-hand concierge service. Yeah, there's a 1970's vibe... But remember respectful service? They never lost it. It is off the beaten path, but worth seeking. CLOSE to The SCHLITTERBAHN, considering how much you'll be walking INSIDE, heh heh) Actually it is closer to the main gate of The Schltterbahn, than the BACK CORNER OF THE SHITTERBAHN IS! Oh and Saturday Overnite during my stay, all of New Braunfels got pummeled with 5" of rain, my cabin was warm and dry. Not sure I would even let curiosity about OTHER hotels in New Braunfels sway my intention of keeping this as my DEFAULT Lodging when in region.

    A very quaint kitchen

There were a few different types of rooms to choose from and we chose the Penthaus 15 because it was on the River. This room is not for tall people (we are not). Choose another room if you're tall! We loved that it's all original buildings from 1800s in the area. Had good plumbing and amazing AC (thank God!) and quite a bit of charm. Please note this is not a bed n breakfast anymore. But The Pantry is a part of the main office and they serve breakfast for reasonable prices. My lox and bagel was amazing and my husband's taco was delicious. Breakfast was a local affair. So many people and everyone was small town friendly. We sat on the porch but there were tables inside and on the back patio. The Texas Pecan Coffee was so good I bought some to bring home. Location of the mansion was perfect! We never even got in our car all weekend!! Shops, live music, bars, parks, river tubing was all within a few blocks. So close that if we needed to cool down (June in TX with no ac in some shops and restaurants) we would just swing back to the room for about 15 mins, cool down, and then keep going. So much live music to enjoy. I see some reviews that complain about music at night but we were not bothered by any of it. We had to strain to hear anything outside our room. The Inn provides earplugs but we didn't use them. We've already promised each other to come back again in the fall when it's a little cooler. And of course we will stay at the Gruene Mansion Inn.

With how high the rates are it should definitely be a B&B still, but i guess high prices are just something that people get away with now! Regardless the room we stayed in was beautiful and clean and had updated renovations. The outside looks rustic but the inside is very comfortable and relaxing. Besides the music that is playing next door, sleep was great. The beds are comfy. We enjoyed rocking in the chairs on the patio watching the people. Plenty of parking during the week for guests. Staff was great and helpful.

Yesterday I checked in ahead of time with my arrival time and selected my room as they allowed. Specifically choosing it for its quiet location and proximity to stairs. When you do this you get a confirmation that literally says "you're checked in!" And gives you the room number and then says you can bypass the front desk and head straight to the room with your digital key. 3 pm rolls around as I'm driving into the parking lot as planned and no digital key. I go to the front desk and the gaslighting ensues: yeah they choose poor wording is the response to "I've already checked in my it says my room isn't ready". Then he tried to switch me to 415. 415 is behind elevators. The exact opposite of the quiet I selected ahead of time. Then he says or you have have 20something (this hotel is wood construction and you can hear walking on the floors above.) He says he'll take my number and call when it's ready after I say I'll wait. Nah I'll just sit in the lobby. A few minute go by and I get a notification my room is ready- 415- the room I said no thank you to. I say nothing. A few more minutes. "Your room is ready" and I come up to the desk with my cards. And he tries to give me another room- another one I didn't ask for. In the center of the hallway. And I've had it before and know it has some electrical wiring crossed in the lighting. I again decline and say I'll wait. I don't know why it has to be this difficult and dishonest/gaslit. If you're not going to honor reservations just say that so I can choose to go elsewhere.

It is an amazing location. We walk to our dinner reservations. They also serve wine in the lobby in the evening. The breakfast served in the morning was so good! The view from our table of the pool and the river was just beautiful. At breakfast, we all loved the yogurt parfait. It had crushed pineapple and kiwi. They had sausage, biscuits, and gravy, beautiful quiche, Pastries, so many beverage options. Everyone was so impressed. We all very much enjoyed our stay at the Gruene River Inn.

It always had a welcoming, rustic, hill-country feel to it that matched the surroundings. Our last stay I was really disappointed at the changes that had been made to the decor mostly because they make no sense and did not improve the property in any way. I sincerely hope that the owners did not pay for this decor design. It's pretty awful. (And kind of funny bc it's ALL over the place). What used to be rustic and charming now seems to be modern (gold fixtures, tiled shower, trash cans) asian (black trim, bathroom doors, headboard fabric), kitschy (lasso bedside lamps- that aren't good for reading and don't dim), with a 50's retro flair (the refrigerator and the blue tooth), and modern cowboy art on the walls. Yet, no one thought to include charging ports for electronics! It's so confusing. They pulled out the nice big tub and put in a shower that doesn't have a door and has a shower head with no pressure and no direction to it- so to say it plainly, it's difficult to get clean! Amongst all the changes perhaps fixing the toilet so it doesn't randomly run might have been a good choice. One of the reasons we use to like to stay were the delicious breakfast tacos that were provided. I don't know if they will come back or not as the lobby was under construction, but based on the decor choices my guess is they will make some equally terrible decision regarding the lobby and maybe do away with it all together? Who knows! What it has going for it is that the views are amazing (thankfully they couldn't change that or my guess is they would have)! The bed was comfortable and the towels were top notch. Maybe if you've never been before you won't find it as disturbing but I just had a hard time reconciling the fact that they paid to make the place worse. We might have to find different digs when we're in the area.

After the situation, the hotel manager that day did call to let us know how sorry she was and would work to try to make the situation right. Mr. Patel, the hotel owner, called and said he would reimburse us for the weekend with rewards points (we stayed two nights and this happened at 8 am the first morning). He rewarded us HALF the total for the weekend, meaning we are still going to be paying for this traumatizing experience out of pocket. I understand the rate for points for different locations can change, but when I look up their rate, I can see that we only received enough points to cover ONE DAY. We will NOT be going back.
