That led us straight to Heidi's Bakery & Cafe, and honestly? Total home run. There's a sign hanging on the wall that says: "Homemade with love and butter." That pretty much tells you everything you need to know. You can taste the care and quality in everything they make. We ordered the BLTs on homemade sourdough, and they were absolute perfection --thick, delicious bacon, crisp beautiful lettuce, sweet tomatoes, and sourdough that deserved its own standing ovation. A truly excellent BLT is a thing of beauty, and Heidi's version was gorgeous. The french fries had some kind of secret seasoning situation happening that made them completely addictive. Every bite somehow got better. And then the desserts. Cupcakes. Cookies. Pastries. Basically a direct shipment from heaven itself. The kind of bakery case that makes you start negotiating with your own self-control and losing immediately. We made a carry-out lunch order for our family and got to enjoy the strawberry chicken salad, the turkey Reuben, the BLT, and the chicken ranch wrap. I picked up an enormous Reese's peanut butter cup cookie for later. Everything was delicious, prices were fair, and the staff were friendly. A popular local restaurant (sometimes visitors are brought here...lol). We brought my sister who had never been here. Not only can you order breakfast but lunch too, closes at 2pm. I ordered the chicken, sesame seed sticks, red onion, cranberries, pecans snd shredded cheddar cheese salad ($15); it came with a lemon-ish dressing. I greatly enjoyed my salad which came in a container with lid. Truthfully I finish all the lettuces with most of the "tasties" and it still had enough "tasties" for me to take home and add lettuces to for tomorrow's lunch. On a country road away from the bustle of city, you find a gem in this local bakery and cafe. Operated by the Mennonite family, atmosphere is warm and friendly. The food was amazing! My husband and I both ordered Crispy Chicken Wrap and Russian Cabbage soup. The crispy chicken was actually really crispy and yummy with lots of veggies. We were rewarded with a nice meal on the porch after Heidi's was recommended to us by a local. The restaurant on a farm was well worth the detour. Sophie devoured her Poppyseed Piggy (an unhealthy but tasty sandwich), I enjoyed my breakfast wrap (although it needed the salsa), and Marnie enjoyed the farmer's salad. Wonderful hidden, local gem in the heart of Oakland, MD. Everything just tasted fresh. The baked goods were amazing and an appetizing breakfast menu. My friend and I shared the Wilbur's omelet, which was warm and soft with melted cheese and pieces of sausages, and the Farmhouse salad with their own dressing. We devoured these dishes with gusto. The décor is simplistic, and it is located in a quiet, rural part of town with plenty of fresh air. There is a sign saying that the sink water actually tasted better than the water in the soda machine, and it was so true. Service was courteous and prompt, clean tables, and wide array of options. Just a fantastic jewel in the countryside near Oakland. It is down a side road that is easy to miss, Blue Ribbon Rd, and has a small gravel parking lot. The outside porch is nice to sit and eat. Inside is more seating and a counter to order. The menu is not large, but offers plenty. There is a display case with fresh baked goods, as well. I believe the folks that run this place are Mennonites, they were very friendly and helpful. We were there for breakfast and I ordered the Wilbur Omelet (cute name, not much reason to tell you what was in it) which came with potatoes. I also had a cup of coffee which you serve yourself from their little coffee and tea table. Everything was reasonably priced....I think the omelet platter was $8. We sat and waited while our orders cooked and I noticed they advertised free wifi, had two bathrooms, and they took credit cards for payment. The food was simple, homestyle, and good. If you are in the area, I would definitely recommend stopping by this place for breakfast, perhaps buying a pie to take with you. read more
