My husband and I stopped in Heinen's because he said they have the best bologna and ham out of all the stores he's been to. This was my first time here and I was blown away! They had an amazing deli selection and a large produce section including organic items and locally grown veggies. I got some cheddar and chive scones from the bakery and they were soooo delicious! I've often passed Heinen's Grocery Store in Barrington and finally stopped in to explore. The inside is very spacious with all the grocery departments you can ask for: Produce, Bakery, Deli, Butcher, Alcohol (great wine selection), Frozen, and more! The inside was very clean and well organized. I stopped in with the intent to look for a quick lunch. It was great to find out that do weekday deals (Mon-Thurs) on ready to eat items like salad bar, sandwiches, soup, sushi. I also loved that they had easy meals to purchase and cook at home as well as a large selection of Sweet Ali's Baked Goods. I ended up getting their soup and fresh baked focaccia to take home. It travelled well and was delicious to enjoy! While I wouldn't do all my grocery shopping here, they have quite a few gems here to enjoy! read more

Unfortunately, heinen's had ruined our fourth of July. I purchased meat, kabobs and burgers and some side items for this weekend. My husband and I the following day having eaten the meat we purchased gave us horrible stomach aches and a ton of bathroom visits. I won't be spending money at this grocery store anymore. read more

Beware! A lot of the cashiers scan the same item multiple times hoping you won't catch it. It has happened to me many times and I had to speak up and say something and they didn't even say sorry. Also I did a custom feedback review for 5% off and they wouldn't honor it because I didn't "print out my review".. Who prints stuff nowadays...? It was only 5% off but still... shame. This store is a bit more expensive, but it is a special treat for us. The salmon/shrimp burgers have always been a favorite. When it was suggested by my doctor that I eat gluten free, I was disappointed to learn that these burgers contain bread crumbs that made them not gluten free. Recently, I asked one of the guys at the seafood counter if they ever made a gluten free version. He told me that with a 24 hour notice, they would prepare a batch for me. There was no price markup and the burgers were delicious and healthy. read more

2 male employees are so unfriendly. They are mostly at checkout. One guy never smiles or says thank you. The other one will say thank you every now and then but never smiles. Everyone else is very nice but these two obviously hate their jobs. We won't shop where we end up leaving in bad moods. read more

High end grocery store for sure. They are THE ONLY place where you can buy Cleveland's famous Coconut Bars which I was raised on. Cubes of delectable, fluffy cake dipped in liquid chocolate then rolled in coconut. If you've never had a coconut bar, you really haven't lived a full life. As for the rest of the store it's a bit pricey but you get great service and a sparkling clean atmosphere. When I was there a man was vacuuming the area under the avocados! I bought strawberries and blueberries and when I checked out, the cashier rubber banded the boxes so they wouldn't spill out in the bag. I've passed this store many times heading south on Hough into the heart of Barrington. I'd see the burger place Meatheads and keep driving, not realizing this amazing grocery store was right next to it. We finally discovered this place when we went to breakfast in Barrington and they suggested we join them to see their favorite grocery store. This place is all about presentation and selection, (oh and getting a beer or glass of wine to sip while you browse the aisles). The store is bright, clean, well laid out. The staff is helpful and friendly. But the real star of this place is the selection. There are so many great choices for eating. Some you can even sample, for example their trays of cold salads. With every turn in this store there are more and more choices of quality foods and products. If you can't find what you crave at this place, you probably shouldn't bother eating it. :-) read more

It's like Whole Foods and Mariano's had the sweetest baby. Great produce and prepared foods, well-stocked deli is usually a no-wait experience, soup bar is awesome, seafood counter is great, awesome cheese selection. They also have great holiday hosting packages - appetizers, sides, mains, etc. Store is super clean and a perfect smedium size. Good organic and healthy options, while still maintaining the "regular" stuff you see at Mariano's and Jewel. Only knocks are: soda section doesn't turn over quickly - we have gotten some flat soda. Bakery items seem to be shipped in vs. being baked onsite. Rotisserie chickens are underwhelming - always seem like they are a little "beige" and could be roasted longer. Shop here on the regular, which is a pleasant experience. read more

Heinen's in Barrington seems to always plead the fifth- either they don't have inventory which they list on line or their shoppers are challenged to shop for on line orders in a reasonable time. There are always a multitude of excuses for terrible problems with inventory or the shoppers are tending to other things in the store. It took one hour & 20 minutes with multiple texts to gather less then 30 items. The Customer Service Lady who was less then cordial offered a multitude of excuses as to why this order took so long. Who's managing this Store- why are they excusing constant problems with inventory inventory & inadequate, shoppers, who shouldn't be multitasking while fulfilling orders. read more

This place has changed over the past ~6-8 months. They've lost a lot of their best people and the service just isn't the same. Also, they closed their beer taps. It's a silly thing, but it created a sense of community when you would go in and see friends and engage with the staff (and invariably buy more!) Where I once used to shop at Heinen's for 90% of my groceries I now just end up going to Jewel most of the time. Now that the sense of community is gone it's just another grocery store, so why pay the price premium? I have many friends in town that feel the same and don't really go there much anymore either. Such a disappointing announcement. I have been a loyal customer of Heinen's since they opened. Fabulous store. Their decision to discontinue their relationship with Instacart is a game changer. They are missing the point. Instacart delivers to my door. If I wanted to drive to Barrington and pick up my groceries hand picked by their staff I would be doing that. I routinely spend well over $1K per month in their store. My work schedule causes me to LOVE the convenience Instacart affords. While the quality of food is fantastic, it is disappointing that they do not realize that Instacart allows them to provide a valued service to a segment of their customers who will now go elsewhere. I am so glad that Barrington has Heinen's! This is a great place to come for a partially prepared dinner. They have a fantastic salad bar and they have a large display case of prepared dinner items. They also have items like prepared salmon where you just have to stick it in the oven to finish it. Some of my favorite things to buy are these smoked salmon and cream cheese pinwheels to serve on top of a water cracker. SO GOOD. They also have a really good buffalo chicken dip that you just warm up and serve. Tasty! The fruits and vegetables are fresh and high quality. My husband and I were quite surprised when we saw that they carried McConnell's ice cream! We have enjoyed this while living in SoCal! I noticed Jeni's, Grater's and others. The only thing that Heinen's is missing is bulk food bins. I love buying a small amount of lentils, farro, or quinoa at Whole Foods (or Sprouts while I lived in CO and CA). read more

Heinen's Grocery Store - McConnell's ice cream - straight from Santa Barbara. Impressed! - Grocery Near Me - Barrington, Illinois

Heinen's is something like a mix between Fresh Thyme, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and Mariano's. Kind of like a one-stop-shop for everything simple and gourmet in one place, jack-of-all trades but master of none. But oddly, this concept does seem to work as it really gives options for everyone even if it doesn't seem to have a singular theme or personality. The closest store to this I think is Fresh Thyme, but Heinen's prices do seem to be a bit lower overall. It has much of the same selection of staples as Mariano's, a relatively good generic brand like Trader Joes, but does carry rarer high end items like Whole Foods. The decor is very nice, with many attractively laid out displays, hardwood floors, and spacious layout. Everything is presented nicely, from the meat to the cheese displays to even the samples arranged nicely in covered domes. Couple thoughts about some departments: - The salad bar is huge and its presentation along with the soup station are so nice it would make many restaurants envious. - Pastries presentation is great and the flavors are pretty good, but more along better grocery store quality rather than something you'd find in Panera. - Breads have a nice texture to them and pretty good flavor. Very good for a grocery store. - Produce selection is varied with some less common items, like Mariano's. Prices for these can be very competitive to very pricey so choose wisely. - Great selection of finer teas at good prices. In particular there's Tea Forte and Republic of Tea options you probably haven't seen at other higher end stores. - Coffee selection could use some help - I would have preferred more choice of whole beans and less instant coffee / k-cups. - Very nice selection of gourmet ice cream from around the US, in particular Graeter's in Ohio, Two Brothers in California, Jeni's from Ohio, and Kimmer's from Illinois. Between here and Mariano's, you can save yourself quite a bit of travel for these delicious treats. - Good selection of beer, I didn't notice any extremely rare items but the mix of domestic, international, and local craft beers is plenty for any event. They also have a great selection of higher end spirits at prices very competitive to Binny's. Once again, I didn't notice any very rare items but the selection is impressive for a grocery store. Overall, this place is great if you're looking for rare food items, want a very pleasant grocery store to walk around, or want to try a wide variety of cheaper and gourmet foods. The prices can be high for some items but if you stick to the sales and bulk purchases, this can also be one of the cheapest stores to shop at for high quality food. This store is very nice! Upon entry is very clean and staff is super nice. The produce section is immaculate and everything looks so fresh. This store is a bit pricey but worth it if you want quality products. Cashiers are super nice and their helper always present to bag groceries and offer assistance. This moved in after I moved and my boyfriend and I just checked it out. He and I expected it to be a Mariano's/Whole Foods hybrid, and I was pleasantly surprised. We'd tried to check it out on labor day, but they were closed (the guy who checked me out mentioned that they close on major holidays - which is nice for employees). The ambiance and environment was very nice, and I immediately noticed in the produce section the different organic food displays (it was all very well marked and easy to tell what was what, unlike Jewel). Yes, some of the 'short-cut' veggie trays look the same, it's a black styrofoam and plastic wrap, it's not that uncommon. I did find a number of interesting and novel products in the meat department - my boyfriend commented that he'd never seen such a big Mahi Mahi (it was the whole half a fish, not a small fillet), and they had yellowfin tuna as well. I was impressed with their selection of meats, and some of other specialty items (I've been looking for avocado oil for EVER. They are the first place to have it.) I also like that they have their line of store brands as Heinens' - no trying to hide what it is or pretend it is a private brand. They own that it is their brand and are product of their products. When I was there, I only bought some lip balm, an apple, and a couple wedges of cheese that I was able to sample in the store. I can't wait to be back and buy more! As for their prices, I had been at Jewel earlier that day, and compared the prices of the items from Jewel with the same items (same brands) at Heinens, and they were either the same at Heinens, .10 cheaper, or like .5 more. Honestly, a shopping trip would have been roughly the same price for me. It would have all evened out. read more

I love this store. Being a smaller store, the prices are a little bit higher, but the service and quality are unmatched. You will never have an employee give you an apathetic/indifferent answer to a question at Heinen's like is common at other area supermarkets. The quality is higher in every department, and they have specialty ingredient selections for gourmet recipes. I was at Heinen's today just to grab a bag of ice and whatever else i could find. They had some room temp boozy popsicles in the checkout isle that I couldn't pass up given the holiday weekend. The wonderful cashier, Kelsey, let me know they had some already frozen and offered to have someone get them for me. Naturally, I obliged. Not only did they make a quick run to swap out the boozy pops for some already frozen, they grabbed my bag of ice, offered to get me a cart and offered to help me carry my things. The two girls helping me today went above and beyond providing top notch customer service. Given today's uncertain and unnerving times, I couldn't be more grateful for their kindness. If it was closer I would go more often. But I like their meats, bakery, and veggies. Every time I go here I come home with at least one interesting find. The staff is always helpful and knowledgeable. Even if you have to drive a bit further, it is worth a trip every now and again. Solid selection of soups for sure if you're in a rush. They also have samples out during lunch time and have really nice flower displays, in particular. Took off a few stars for the one time I found a hair in my soup, which was gross. They refunded me on the soup (but not on the two other items I purchased for lunch). All experiences with employees were very good customer service. Very kind, accommodating. Bad, awful return policy experience! I have returned unwanted, unused or something my family didn't like before with no problems from the customer service desk. I had a receipt every time. I shopped and spent a lot of money here on 3/22. We had no plans for Spring Break. On 3/24 my husband decided we will go away at the last minute. I had my receipt and went to the desk to return some fruit, baked goods, yogurt basically items I couldn't freeze. The rep was abrupt with me telling me "we only take items back if they are spoiled or if you didn't like the taste. We will not accept returns because you didn't use it." I explained about the last minute trip so that was why I was returning the items. I was practically laughed at with a smirk and treated like a child. I was very embarrassed and I didn't think trying to return about $30.00 worth of goods was unreasonable with my receipt and explanation. Very poor customer service this time. I had the pleasure of visiting Heinen's for the first time on Saturday, March 2nd. This grocery chain is relatively new to the area (this is the first and only one in Illinois), they primarily operate in the Cleveland area. The store itself is bright, nicely organized, and CLEAN. I don't think I have been in a grocery store that had such a neutral smell throughout.... no odor in the meat dept, no odor in the cheese dept, and no odor in the fish dept. BRAVO! What most impressed me was that they carry Beecher's Flagship cheese, a product which is the pride of Seattle. I have searched high and low for this cheese in the Chicagoland area and haven't been able to locate it for a few years... until now. Thank you Heinen's! I am also impressed with the number of organic Heinen's house brand items. I saw everything from organic veggie soup stock to organic milk, all at reasonable prices. I have high hopes for Heinen's, I think they have a lot to offer and hope to see them expand to other areas in the Chicago suburbs soon. My grandparents first took me to Heinen's when I visited them at holidays in Cleveland and now this family run food chain has come to town. My wife and I went to this new Barrington location this week to stock up for our Labor Day barbeque and we could not have been happier with this new alternative to Dominicks and Jewel. The big chains have given up service, given up quality and given up specialty products to make it easier and cheaper for them which on many items does keep costs low but when your produce molds or rots in a few days and you can smell the meat and fish as you walk up to them the consumer is not getting the better end of that bargain. Heinen's is positioning themselves as a quality and service oriented store without taking your whole paycheck like other premium grocery chains. This location has a fantastic produce, deli, meat and fish counters combined with a huge cheese case with wine and beer varieties to match. All the everyday foods, dry goods, frozen foods and cleaning products are there but the store is smaller than the bigger chains which does impact some selection but if you are looking for better quality foods, specialty products and greater attention to detail than the big chains get out to Heinen's and see the difference. read more
