I've been coming to this practice for about 4 years now and can honestly say Dr. Oliver and his team are the best! I've always had a phobia of dentists (like had to be forcibly pulled out of a car and crying in the dentist chair level) but all my cleanings here have been fairly painless and the dental hygienists are all very nice and caring when they clean and make sure to let me know what they're doing as they move through each step. I've had a root canal performed and a cap put on my tooth by Dr. Oliver and he showed care and professionalism in his work. Dr. Oliver comes highly reviewed and recommended because he isn't aggressive in pushing unnecessary and pricy treatments. So why am I not coming back after just 2 visits? The cleanings are draconian and brutal. The first time I went, I got an older woman who went to town on my teeth and gums, so much so that they were still bleeding that night when I brushed them. I'm someone who brushes, flosses, and uses mouthwash every day and I NEVER bleed like this during cleanings. I was with my previous dentist for 15 years and I've been to at least a half dozen other dentists in my life -- never bled like this. I chalked it up to a one time fluke, however, and returned today. I got a different hygienist today and was momentarily relieved. However, right off the bat I was annoyed that Annessha talked to me for almost 15m before even starting the cleaning. Small annoyance, but if I was in a rush that wouldn't be great. Then came the cleaning. Again, it was brutal and I didn't realize I was bleeding that much until I caught my teeth reflection in the overhead light. By that time it was too late, as she had already done 3 passes over my teeth while taking out her life's anger and frustration on me. I asked her to be more gentle but she kept coming back with excuses and saying that she "knew she was doing a good cleaning." Not only would she not listen to me, but she kept talking and talking and trying to explain away all the blood that had splattered on my face and GLASSES. I'm no expert but no dental cleaning should look like a crime scene. ALSO, she claimed she didn't know she was being too harsh but hello? If a patient has a mouthful of blood isn't that a sign that you're doing something wrong?? Lastly, she tried to gaslight me and asked if I had missed an appointment, which would "explain" why I bled so much. Uh no, lady, I was there in the spring where one of your colleagues also did the same hack job on my teeth. Long story short: go here if you REALLY want a non pushy dentist and can handle Guantanamo-level pain and torture for the cleanings. ETA: It's now been 5 hours since the cleaning and my gums are still bleeding! Again, not normal for me. read more

Dr. Oliver is the most honest doctor I've ever had. I've been a client on and off for 30 years. I took a few breaks along the way to try to reduce the drive, but each time I ended up at dentists that recommended unenecessary procedures. Dr. Oliver only recommends procedures when absolutely necessary, not because he's trying to drain your annual insurance funds like other dentist (believe it or not one sent me a letter that I have funds remaining and I should do something with them before the year expires. Crazy!). In the 30 years I've had 1 or 2 cavities filled by him and that's it. And he recommended against a bunch of procedures the other dentists recommended. 20+ years have gone by since those other doctors made their recommendations, and I still don't need those things done. So drop everything, drive as far as you need to drive, because the best show in town! read more

I have been a loyal patient of Dr Oliver and my favorite hygienist Gerry for seven years and I couldn't be happier. Historically I have been no great fan of the dentist, but working with Gerry has been fantastic and has resulted in noticeable improvements in my oral health. She is knowledgeable and very supportive, and always has great recommendations for products and strategies to improve my gum health. Dr Oliver is very kind, professional, and (most important to me), a low-intervention dentist. To borrow from Click and Clack, I am often suspicious of dentists' proclivity for intervention because that's what pays the bills. I'm not sure how Dr Oliver is making his boat payments, but it's definitely not because of unnecessary procedures for his patients. I truly cannot recommend this practice highly enough. read more

I started going to Dr Oliver because of these amazing reviews. I was a patient of his for seven years- despite thinking it was a bit odd that he (the Doc himself) only checks on you once a year. So every other appt. the remaining times only the hygienist takes care of you and you leave. Anyway he filled a cavity for me in Dec 2018. Afterwards, food got stuck in between the tooth he filled and the one next to it every single one I chewed anything on that side. It was really frustrating because I had to have floss with me all the time. I went back to Dr O and asked him about it. He said there was contact between the teeth and it was fine. (There was contact, but very little.). I went to get a second opinion and was told not only was it not good that food was getting stuck, but that I also had FOUR other cavity spots, including the tooth adjacent to the one that Dr O had filled. Stunned, I went for a third opinion. The third dentist said the same thing. I eventually went with the third and had him fill all the cavities. And he filled the tooth adjacent to the tooth Dr O had filled and built it out bigger than it was originally to provide more contact between the teeth. Food no longer gets stuck with every bite. I feel like I had a gut reaction when I first started going to Dr O-- he told me there was NO WAY I had made the bite marks in my mouth guard because they were so big. He was clearly not familiar with that kind of bite guard. I needed to have it filed down smoothe every year and it had been years. I told him this but he didn't listen. read more

I would like to start this off by saying the cleaning that I had was excellent and the hygienist was very sweet and very patient with me. I hadn't been to the dentist in years and I was a smoker who quit so she had her work cut out for her. The reason for the two star knock off is that I confirmed a price of $150 when I called in as well as when I was at the front desk. I noted to both the front desk that I don't have health insurance for the first 3 months of being on a new job, so I don't want any extras... I just want the cleaning and can't afford the xrays or anything extra. When the hygienist wanted to set me up for xrays after saying that I didn't want them until I had insurance.... I reminded her that I didn't have insurance at the time and could only afford the cleaning. She was very nice and said that she understood in a very sweet accent. She asked if I wanted to meet the doctor and Richard came in to check over the work done for a couple minutes and said I had good teeth. When I went to checkout, the price was $250. I said that I confirmed the price and the price for a cleaning was $150 and the receptionist said it was $100 for the examination. I asked what examination, when the hygienist used a gause and pulled my tongue and checked for cancer? The receptionist said, did Dr Oliver go into the room? I said yes and she said if he goes into the room it costs $100 as that counts as an examination. So yes, he did go into the room and did check over my teeth really quickly before I left as every other dentist office does for a couple minutes. Nobody communicated to me that this was an extra charge. I emphasized multiple times to multiple employees that I had no insurance and only wanted a simple cleaning without any extra charges. I said at that time to the receptionist that I don't like hidden charges and I didn't think that it was fair. They did not tell me any additional charge would be given to meet Dr. Oliver, nor did they seem to care that I was just charged an extra $100 as no steps were taken to help. Dr. Oliver had a good personality and I like the guy. I really like the office and they did a good job, but they put me in a tough spot since I couldn't afford to have them sneak in an extra $100 charge without telling me. Please be clear with what costs extra if a customer says they have no insurance as it caused a financial hardship as I just got back from my honeymoon. I was not rude about my displeasure and paid the extra, but I had to cut out my tooth whitening with the company after I felt like they deceptively overcharged me. The doctor and hygienist seem like very caring and good people, but I didn't get the same feeling of love from the receptionist when I had a conflict. read more

Another dentist informed me that I had a cavity [my first ever] and naturally, I was terrified. That dentist had iffy yelp reviews when it came to fillings, and upon researching other options, I came across Dr. Oliver. He's out of my insurance network, but based on the positive reviews, it was worth it to me. Dr. Oliver immediately gave off a positive, warm vibe. He inspected my teeth and told me that I don't actually need a filling. Instead, he buffed out the tiny amount of non-invasive decay and put in a sealant. After multiple interactions with them, I was told the following: "It is not our policy to allow patients to dictate what services they elect to have particularly on an initial visit." Insurance company will not reimburse for multiple comprehensive exams in 5 years, and hence, make sure you check before you change your dentist to this location and given my experience, you May want to double check what service you are getting as a patient. read more

I don't like my dentists to intervene unless absolutely necessary. I am almost 30 and have not had my wisdom teeth taken out. They don't bother me or my other teeth, and I never had them removed because my long-time dentist is a family friend back in Chicago, and he never felt it was necessary. My gut feeling is that most dentists probably would have yanked them out by now, just because that's what you do with wisdom teeth. This was a concern for me when searching for a dentist here in Boston. Luckily for me, Dr. Oliver's approach to dentistry is "if it doesn't bother you, it doesn't bother me". Let's start this review with the cold hard truth: No one likes the dentist. This is a person who does invasive, sometimes painful, things to you... and then charges you for it. Yep, I'm reviewing a dentist office. But it's important. Your teeth deserve awesomeness too. After having to cancel on my old dentist due to illness and being told the next available appointment was 6 months away I knew it was time for a switch. So I came to Yelp this time to find my new tooth haven and I was not let down. This place rules. They send you text reminders for your appointment. They are super nice. My hygenist was a total sweetheart and didn't stab me in the gums the entire time. They have a new tooth polishing device that was great and some sort of new fangley Siri-type program to keep track of your gum health (you'll see). I always liked going to the dentist (I know, I know) and now I pretty much love it. But don't go here because I don't want to have to jockey for an appointment slot! :) read more

The dental hygienists are so professional and use state of the art technology. The front desk is excellent about working with your insurance, fitting you in with cancellations and using computer systems to remind you about your appointments. I recently changed my dentist to Dr. Oliver's practice, and I gotta say I'm extremely pleased. The staff was super friendly and attentive. My first visit was just for a cleaning. It was the most thorough cleaning I have ever received from a hygienist. You could tell she takes pride in her work. I was also pretty impressed by the new technology they use. My second visit was for a temporary crown and then a permanent crown. Dr Oliver did a great job. It was quick and painless, just how I like my dentist visits. I learned about Dr. Oliver through Yelp so thought it made sense to note my thanks in the same place. I made an emergency appointment to address a cracked filling (only two years old, the disappointing work of Delta Dental on Tremont Street). I can be a complete baby when it comes to the dentist, and Dr. Oliver was kind, patient and positive every step of the way without ever being patronizing. Even more importantly, he worked quickly and effectively, explained to me in detail what he was doing, what the problems had been with the old filling and what he was doing differently to address those issues, and continually asked about my comfort throughout the appointment. As "enjoyable" as a trip to the dentist can be--particularly one involving drilling--my experience definitely tops the list. I never thought I could find someone who could hold a candle to my beloved childhood dentist (he was so great and calming that I didn't even know Novocaine was an injection until I was an adult) but after years of trying different dentists in the Boston area, I have finally found one I'll stick with. read more

I had my first visit and cleaning a couple of weeks ago. They have a super convenient location for anyone who works in downtown Boston which is one of the many reasons I chose this practice. I felt for the first time in my life that the hygienist took her time and REALLY gave my teeth a good scrub. My teeth are still singing from their cleaning. I have had some horrific experiences with a few dentists in Boston and Dr. Oliver has really set the bar for a GREAT experience. To be clear, the overall treatment experiences have been excellent including amazing hygienists. My only complain is the front desk. They are VERY impatient and often impertinent or even demeaning toward their patients - which is surprising compared to Dr.Oliver and most of hygienists' amiable disposition. I was in need of getting myself back in the routine of regular dentist visits - and who knew the city's finest office was right across the street from me. The entire staff here could not be nicer - they do their best to make what is otherwise an unpleasant chore the most relaxing and easy dentist appointment ever. My dentist who I'd been going to since I was a kid recently retired and sold the practice to another dentist in the office. After 1 visit my husband and I were unhappy with the new ownership so turned to Google/Yelp for a new practice closer to home and our offices. I'm so glad we settled on Dr. Oliver! I had my first visit this morning, everything went as smooth as can be. My appointment was at 11:30 and right on the dot the hygienist Denise came out to get me started. Throughout the entire cleaning she was great about explaining every step and going over what she was doing/why and making sure I wasn't in any pain. After a very thorough cleaning and exam, Dr Oliver came in for a final check and to answer questions about next steps and the next visit. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. My best experience at the dentist has been this place everyone is nice and happy to chat while still being extremely professional and trustworthy. I recently had doctor Oliver drill and fill a tooth and to be honest the most uncomfortable part was getting the Novocaine injected and then being a mumbler for the next couple hours. all the staff are knowledgeable and allow me to ask as many questions as i want and they always answer without getting annoyed at me. I love going in there and talking about movies and TV shows and cell phones while I'm getting my teeth cleaned. I personally had a decent experience with Dr. Oliver and some of his hygenists. However, some of the staff there are not the most ideal at returning messages or calling the patient back. They have an online portal where you can sent an appointment request but have to wait for a call back for exact times etc. Admittedly, I had difficulty making some of these appointments on time as a health care trainee especially in these times. I had sent requests for appointments multiple times later on but got no call/message back. Even if there were any qualms about making these appointments, they could have atleast emailed me back or called which didnt happen. This left me hanging and forced to find time in between the day, and calling the dental office myself. With poor reception at work, it was quite challenging spending that time on the phone. It left me rather discouraged to proceed with my care here. read more
