I have nice memories of coming here as a child with my grandmother and aunt. I've only been as an adult once or twice but need to visit more often. It is a lovely shop with many rooms full of jewelry, gifts, greeting cards, seasonal decor, etc. You can spend some time looking at everything. I got some Christmas gifts and a few cards. My aunt reminded me they used to serve hot Constant Comment tea. I'm not sure this is still a thing. It's worth a visit if you haven't yet. read more

A lovely little gift store in a charming old house in a corner of German Village. I loved all of the sunlight streaming in the store windows. The best part was being greeted at the door by Maddy, the house Labradoodle. She was doing a great job managing the store and giving out free dog snuggles. I only intended to wander in and take a look...but there was just so much to look at. I ended up with a few gifts for other people and one for myself. Very cool place. I have been by here often, but never stopped in, even when I lived in German Village- on Kossuth, actually. Just never seemed like my kind of place. And you know, maybe it isn't. But it is a great place. Lots of handmade art, much of it local, all of it from the US (well, North America, since there are a few Canadian things.) Jewelry, pottery, candles, stained glass, notecards, clocks, switchplates, and on and on. It's in an old house, and every room is filled with interesting items. Not overstuffed, though- it's all carefully arranged and displayed, and a visit is a very relaxing time, with soft music and a mellow tone. I came looking for gifts for my wife, daughter, and mom, for Valentine's Day and more. Loads of potential choices here. There's a room of just kid's stuff, which I will have to keep secret from Baby K so she doesn't insist on getting a(nother) princess dress. Great service. I was offered tea or coffee when I came in, and had quiet offers of help, and just friendly greetings once in awhile from various staff. It's expensive. But, it's good stuff. I'll be back. read more

I randomly ventured over to this adorable gift boutique after having lunch one afternoon and I'm so glad I did! It's located in the beautiful Columbus neighborhood of German Village and is an old home built right along the red brick roads. It was like I opened the door and stepped into a movie. The sun was out and shining brightly in through the windows of the sunroom and the various hanging glass and jars, etc. twinkled in every color of the rainbow. I instantly got excited and was so pumped I had a few minutes to look around. After walking through all the various rooms of the house turned business, I found the cutest card ever! Locally made in Ohio, I had to have it! The moment I saw it I knew who I was going to send it to. Seriously, this place had the best cards in almost every nook and cranny in the place. I also discovered the most amazing handmade jewelry, artwork, unique gifts, and so much more. It was like finding hidden treasure every time you turned the corner. I even found the funniest animal clocks! An entire wall full of various cat and dog clocks, wagging tails and all. I couldn't help but smile. I may have to go back and get one or put it on my Christmas list for this year. They're just so fun! Oh yeah! I also want to point out how friendly the staff was. I was offered a beverage while I browsed and the ladies there for the afternoon were happy to answer any questions I had. That was surely the icing on the cake! Now that I know about this hidden gem, I will certainly make the time to visit again. My mom, daughter and I came in here the other day and we were immediately greeted by a nice woman asking if she could get us tea or coffee while we looked around; we declined but were surprised by the nice gesture since you normally don't hear that in shops. She noticed my daughter and told us to check around upstairs where there was a little kid's area. The items in this store are beautifully made and some are a little pricey, but this store is cute for one of a kind gifts! We went upstairs where we browsed dress up costumes, stuffed animals, and they had a little kid's table for kids to color on paper with crayons! My mom found a mother's day gift for her that she wants from my brother and I. It's called a "pic stick" and you can hang it up with pictures of your family on the magnetic stem. Very expensive little gift shop. Everything is hand crafted from many different artisans. There were a lot of beautiful things, but I felt they didn't offer anything for my age group (32) - I could picture my mom or grandma with a lot of their goods. However, I did love their large card and Swirly Girl collections. I also wanted to mention that they had so many sales ladies while we were there. One followed my husband and I from room to room where I felt I was being glared at constantly. A tip would be ask if customers need help, and once they say no, leave them alone. I almost felt as if she was worried we were stealing or breaking things or something. It was a very uncomfortable experience. read more

After eating at Schmidts we stopped in here to do more shopping. The ladies that were working that day offered us a glass of cold water. I love you, Helen Winnemore's. Truth. You are everything I want in a artsy craftsy gift store. Everything. You have the most unique trinkets, the most fabulous knick-knacks, and the most glorious gifts a man could ask for. It is literally dangerous for me to walk into this store. I used to live just down the street from it, and it's actually become more dangerous for me now that I live a little farther away. I just love walking in and being greeted so warmly. They always offer coffee, tea, or water. How cool is that? It's so fun to take your time and meander through the many rooms, look in all the drawers, and find what cool stuff they've discovered for you. Downstairs there's a jewelry room and a couple other random rooms, and upstairs is more of the kids/seasonal area. In all honesty, last time I stopped by here I didn't even make it out of the jewelry room. I probably spent 40 minutes just browsing through here. There's just something really cozy about this place. This is totally worth your time if you've never been, even just to look through things. Most, if not all, of the wares inside are hand-made by artists, so some items can be pricey, but they also have some lower cost items too. My great experience started as soon as I walked in the door! I was greeted by a friendly woman who offered me tea or coffee. She asked if I'd been there before and explained there are 2 rooms upstairs and 3-4 rooms downstairs, all featuring American artist's works. All of their stuff is beautiful! When I checked out, the cashier was so friendly. She recommended I check out the store around Christmas time when the whole German village area is decorated. I gave her my name and email address and as I left she said "Thank you, Debbie." She remembered my name which is so little but left a huge impression on me. Searching for Hanukkah gifts, I stumbled upon Helen Winnemore's for unique and high quality items. Driving to the store, I was surprised to find that it is actually a house in German Village. The sales person gave me a warm welcome and was happy to help me find exactly what I was looking for. They have some gorgeous jewelry, unfortunately it is a bit out of my price range. I found a beautiful bag, made of sturdy upholstery material for my mother. And I purchased some smaller items for my aunt and grandmother. The one thing that frustrates me about Winnemore's is that they have an early closing time. Unfortunately I work an hour outside the city, so making it to the store before they closed was difficult. From the outside looking in Winnemore's white framed windows cut into red brick one may think it was a set out of Harry Potter, the glass works they display there dresses it in an illusion, as if shelves of glass beakers, flasks, and spirel tubbing await a wizard's alchemical experiement. A smart presentation that must hook plenty of tourist roaming down Kossuth in route to Schmidts. I know it hooks me more often than not. The old home turned into a cozy craft-wear shop is uber-friendly; they usually have someone to greet customer on entrance. Always happy and garrulous, they are ready to offer you coffee or water, explain the shop to newcomers, or to chat about the merchadise. You will feel comfortable walking in. The place has handmade gift ideas from local and national artist. They previous mentioned glass decor are hand blown, in fractual shapes, and glimmer. Wine glass hand painted are classy, and expensive, would make for a good party set. They also have wood dinnerware, women's clothing: scarves, purses, and jewelry--not really in the hip young trends-- but classic, never out of style, fashion. Greeting cards, Victorian area styled toys ( think classic Santa Claus), and funky wooden cat clocks that somehow don't seem as kitschy as you would suspect are other noticeable. A charming and cozy house set up with lots of rooms of gifts and jewelry. Things here are a little pricier but there was quite a range of products to investigate. I really liked that I was offered a cup of coffee while browsing--I can't turn down a cup of coffee, especially if there are mobiles to distract me! Sadly, the mobiles (which were fantastic and looked like leaves) were on the very pricey side. Helen Winnemore's also touted 40 drawers of jewelry which just asked to be explored. The clever workers have nonstandard items used in the drawers to help display the products, i.e. bracelets standing in a drawer of rice and earrings made of sea glass nestled in a small bed of sea shells. I give them a gold star for creativity. I also liked the cork wall covering in the hall and stairway going upstairs. I was also really excited about the sign that promised a toy room upstairs. Sadly, I wasn't totally blown away by the toy offerings--I don't know what I was expecting?--but they definitely had some great gift ideas for the youngster in your life. It was more like books, puzzles, and puppets as opposed to robots. For some reason I just thought toys and assumed quirky robots and lots of bright colors. This little store was so charming. In the heart of German Village, it's situated in a house-like shop full of friendly staff. When walking in, my fiancé and I were greeted by a staff member who welcomed us and offered us coffee, tea, or water. It was a really nice change of pace to be greeted like that. My first experience at this shop was during the village lights. Honestly I only went in because they were serving hot chocolate outside. They had little cups of it in muffin tins which I thought was genius and practical. This is also how I would describe the store. From the outside it appears as though they specialize in knick knacks since the windows are full of little glass pieces but below them the shelves are full of crazy little toys. My friend and I spent 30 minutes playing with the glasses that reflect shapes off of the lights (glasses are strategically placed near the lamp selections). We were having a hell of a time and the staff even encouraged us. Moving through the rest of the house is like traveling through a mini department strore, designed by your cool grandma or aunt. Two walls of jewelry and three back rooms of housewares, all kinds of dishes, centerpieces and pottery-all original designs. Upstairs the attic is full of toys, the kind of stuff that you would buy for your favorite niece but even for yourself. Interesting stuffed animals, models, and cool kits for nature exploration. My girlfriend and I have visited Helen Winnemore's several times, and it just occurred to me that I should finally write a review. In some respects, Helen Winnemore's is like some of the other gift shops you find in German Village, full of artisanal wares from crafters near and far. But what truly sets HW apart is the care that is given to the curation of those wares. Different sections of the store feel, if not thematic, at least complementary. In other words, there's something purposeful about the layout. This is true of the various sections of the shop, including the stairwell, back hall, and upstairs rooms. On our most recent visit, we were shopping for an upcoming wedding, and it wasn't hard to find numerous options that would work...and it certainly beat the mundane task of scrolling through a gift registry. But in general, Helen Winnemore's has become our go-to shop for whenever we want to find a unique and personal gift, and occasionally for when we want to treat ourselves with some high-quality crafts. read more

It is not very often that I am in the German Village area and find that Helen Winnemore's is open. I was in the area today for an early dinner and happened to catch this craft and gift shoppe open. So, we popped in to browse around. The entrance is located along Kossuth Street as opposed to the door on Fourth Street. It is an old Germanic brick home that was converted into a shop back in 1966. They have many finely crafted items ... jewelry, scarves, ceramic pottery, sock puppets, clocks, candles and much more. There are some finely crafted items that make great gifts or add a special touch for your home. Helen Winnemore's is the oldest craft gallery in the United States. Some 70 years ago it began when Helen Winnemore would invite her friends over and allow them to look through drawers full of crafts. Today, that is still evident. In the loft attic is the kids' section and there you can pull the drawers open and find items for sale in. Checking out the place today you'd never realize it was so old. All the artwork is fresh and modern, coming from artists all over the country, including Ohio. They try to have at least one Ohio artist in each medium be it their glassworks in the front room or the woodworks or cookware or knit socks or knit socks or pottery. I was intrigued by the glassworks in the front room window. They were all different shapes and uses, like ornaments, salt and pepper shakers, wine stoppers and little vases.
