I order from here pretty often, but today was extremely disappointing. I called and specifically ordered a regular pie with extra cheese, half pepperoni and half cheese. When I sat down to eat, I was shocked to see they sent me a deep-dish pizza. I HATE deep-dish pizza--who wants all that bread?! I called the shop to explain what happened, and suddenly there was a language barrier. I was told Alberto would call me back around 8 PM, but no one ever did. Mistakes happen, but I feel this could have easily been resolved with a partial refund or a replacement pie. Unfortunately, I was left with a pizza I didn't order and no resolution. I'm leaving this review to make others aware of my experience. I'm still open to the situation being made right, but as of now, I'm very disappointed and won't be ordering again. read more

Helens is part of the old guarde on Newark Ave. Pizza slices are generously sized. I got 1 pepperoni slice to sample the sauce and 1 white with broccoli. Crust is appropriately thin and crispy on the outside, and the sauce is slightly sweet, not excessively so. Not usually a sweet sauce person but I was fine with this. Whole thing cost 9.60. Pretty good, maybe not the best slice I've ever had but still good. The white was less impressive. The ricotta was giving cream cheese frankly. A shame considering and part of why I marked down. Anyways worthwhile slice if you are in the area. read more

So on my last visit, we had a little incident. Out of loyalty, I'm not gonna drop a star. Why? Because my family has been eating here since 1969 and this was only ONE incident out of 52 years. But, I am gonna say what happened to make you future patrons more aware to pay attention to the prices when they're ringing you up. Long story short, girl at the register tried to over charge me THEN argued with me about why she was over charging me by claiming: 1) The Menu was old (lie) 2) It was higher because of the tax (lie) 3) An extra credit card charge (lie) One of her Coworkers came over and helped her out on the register. He rang me up correctly. So I'm guessing the girl is new? The owner came over to check what was going on and I told him straight out she was trying to over charge me. He apologized. She, however, did not apologize. She tried to argue with me when she was the one who made the error. Then, she started talking about me in Spanish to her coworker as if I didn't understand her. So! Be mindful of the prices when you order because you may be overcharged, which personally I don't think is okay. Did I mention my family has been eating at Helen's since 1969? 52 years! I'm happy to say Helen's is still serving delicious food. Seems Italian, but the family is Greek! Highly recommend trying the other items on their menu! Pizza is good, but you gotta try the other items as well! The food...still delicious! 52 years in my family and they're still consistent! A staple pizzeria in the heart of JC. I attempted to get food here. I was at the counter for a couple minutes but was ignored by all the employees. So I very loudly said "is there anybody that can help me" and they still continued to ignore me. I'm really not sure why. I think that if you are the person that makes the pizza, it doesn't hurt to say things like "you can order over there", and if you are the person who takes the order but are busy, you can say things like "I'll be right with you". I'm not sure how a customer can walk into a business and their presence not be acknowledged. I don't like to write reviews like this but Helen's Pizza deserves 0 stars for ignoring me the way they did. read more

After reading all the bad reviews I have almost always been pleasantly surprised by the food here. Have ordered so many times, tried a variety of their pizza slices and they have been good so far. My favorite is their white slice. It's always fresh with enough cheese and Italian herb. Even the crust is flavorful. Recently I ordered a Margherita Pizza and it was delicious ! This is a place I frequented back in High School. This place has always been good. It has some of the best pizza I've had from that area in Downtown Jersey City. This time I ordered sweet potato fries and a Buffalo chicken pizza and it's was average at best. It surely wasn't their best work. Ordered our usual grilled chicken and broccoli pie from Helen's since we were in the hood. Called ahead for pick up. Located on part of the Newark Avenue strip closed off to cars which makes it extremely difficult to find parking. Parked and walked several blocks to pick up the pie. The pie itself is well presented. The ratio of toppings was good. The grilled chicken had an unrecognizable taste almost like a hint of bbq. The crust was crunchy and a little doughy. The bottom was nice and dry (a wet center of pie is the worst). Overall it was ok but expect a little more for my pizza dinner. I would stop in for a slice if in the neighborhood but would not make a special trip to dine there due to the traffic and difficulty with parking. read more

The service here is the worst. I called to find out the status of an order I placed an hour and a half ago and was met with an attitude. I was told we are backed up, it's does not happen every night but we are backed up, I don't know what you want me to tell you. Do you want me to call the driver and tell him to not deliver your order? They could not even tell me how much longer it would be. If you can't deliver the orders timely maybe you should try not taking so many orders. Also maybe you should not tell your customers at the time the order is placed that it will be delivered in 1/2 an hour! We got confirmation on our order at 1028 on slice. We went to the location and found out that they will not provide a personal cheese pie, and chicken finger & fry. They offered free slices, but the slices looked liked they were made first thing in morning. Really immature service. The cleaning boy even laughed at us when we stated we could go somewhere else for better service. This place is an embrasment for 3rd party services. Helen's fell wayyy off over the years in terms of pizza. My parents went to school with the kids so this place is very old school JC! If I know u know!! Stopped by for a few slices. The pizza was a bit on the expensive side at 4.5/slice but I suppose that's expected these days. The slice had good texture but was overly salty. I haven't had their pizza but judging from the reviews not sure if I'd want to. However, I HAVE HAD their subs and they are actually pretty good! The BBQ chicken hot sandwich tasted great. Not the BEST sandwich I've had, but definitely would buy again. The overall atmosphere is eh, pretty spacious but truly nothing special. Just your standard pizzeria. When I called to let them know they forgot my margarita pizza, CHRIS was extremely rude and unapologetic. I asked Chris when would they would be returning with my pizza and he said "whenever someone passes by your way- we're too busy." WOOW!!! Talk about awful customer service! Sis and I had stuffed our faces with pizza and pastries so I wasn't hungry. But how could I not try a place called Helen's Pizza! Well, a bite showed me that this humble, NY slice was way better than the over salted artisanal pie sis and I had for lunch. The ratio of cheese to sauce was fine, the sauce tasted fresh, with good seasoning, albeit not as tangy as I would have liked and the crust was a bit softer. I could only eat a bite, but took the slice home, since it was delicious. Well a few minutes in the skillet proved crisped up the crust. Almost a perfect slice. Helen's Pizza is big, with ample seating and a varied menu. It's not upscale, but a regular pizza place servicing up really good pizza. Seating is large tables and booths to one side and smaller tables. And if you like your crust crispy, ask them to heat it really hot or do as I did, take it home and reheat. read more

I loved Helen's from the moment I walked in. I was pleasantly surprised - it was brightly lit, spacious, heavily adorned with Halloween decorations. The atmosphere was great - I felt very comfortable. Service was very friendly as well. We ordered the lasagna pie, (personal size) likely a less popular choice. I was terrified and expected a mountain of pasta atop a pizza. Another surprise -- the personal pie was absolutely adorable, like a little cheesy Frisbee. The pizza was moist and juicy with prominent hunks of ricotta and a doughy crust. The bits of lasagna noodle were far from dry and very sparsely distributed along the pie. In fact, it was so light on the pasta that you did not get noodles with every bite. Pasta pizza is a crazy concept and quite frankly, sounds terrible. However, I think Helen's did it right by letting the lasagna complement the pie and not compete with it. Kudos! Can't wait to sample their other pies!
