I ordered a medium margharita pie with Italian sausage on half. (Planning on having leftovers in the hotel for a few nights.) I was told it would take about 10 minutes to cook. Once you enter, there is a bakery in the front and in the back is where the pizza area is at. The place is bright and has an old school bakery vibe to it. I really like this place! No frills, very authentic. I heard them speaking Italian. Bakery at the front and then you can walk in the back and order pizza, you can ask for any toppings. $3.50 a cheese dice. They are huge and thin and crispy and delicious. I got the Italian cheesecake slice too, $5. Pretty good, I liked the texture and not too sweet. It was a little too lemony though. I can't wait to try the leaf cookies and rainbow cookies I got. We LOVE Rizzo's! It's a staple in Jersey City. They have the BEST slize of plain pizza in the area - it's huge, thin, crispy, and totally hits that pizza craving. Their bread is amazing, too, especially when you can get it warm. There is nothing like getting in your car ripping off a hunk of fresh, warm bread from Rizzo's - you won't be able to resist! Jersey City Heights is home to several tasty traditional pizzerias. No, not the bougie unnamed spots that open twice a week. I mean traditional old school spots like Gino's, Pizza masters, and I'd even throw Mama Leona as a pretty solid slice. For years I cycled through these (usually Gino's and pizza Masters); since they had great slices, I didn't have reason to branch out. However, this meant I overlooked other extremely solid places, including this spot which is tucked away at the rear of a bakery. The plain cheese slice is as good (or better) than anything I've tried anywhere. You go in, you pay, and you enjoy your slice. The sauce has that slight tinge of sweetness that's hard to replicate. The cheese is perfectly balanced and not runny. And best of all you won't look like a muppet trying to score a reservation or waiting on a 30 minute line for a slice. With apologies to Pizza masters and Gino's, this is my new go-to spot - Rizzos is the best of a great bunch of Heights pizzerias. read more

Mama serves up the largest slices since the Original Rays in The Village in the '70s. Slices are thin with enough cheese and the occasional bubble in the dough for my palette. Order two slices and you'll find yourself ordering another. Check out the selection of boxed pasta to take home, the buxom Italian girl graphics are classic. This place is an Italian relic which hopefully will thrive through the eventual gentrification. Have an Italian soda with your slices and don't forget the cookies on your way out. You'll quickly fill up the small box to go so listen to Mama when she says to make it a medium. Mama will tell you not to open the box till you get home, she'll even tighten that string around the box till it caves slightly but screw it, those cookies will be gone the minute you step in your car. read more

5 stars for Mama Rizzo, Fran, & our favorite pizza guy at the counter! I've been coming here for 10 years and I live that nothing changed- they keep it old school and keep true to their roots. You can't find a better, or larger slice of pizza pie in jersey city. $2.50 gets you a fantastic plain slice, foldable and Perfect crust/sauce- I'm craving one right now! I enjoy grabbing a cappuccino from the bakery counter and a sfagliatelle (lobster tail with ricotta and lemon) or freshly made cannoli. The brown sugar biscottis are great too with the espresso. The bakery has great bread and pastries, and imported meats to choose from. There are also little italian market items and you can order bread for home and dinners to go. I've only been in here twice and only for the pizza. The pizza is good and the slices are big! A regular slice is $2.50. I ordered a slice of pepperoni which was $3.50.
