A nostalgic favorite! Huge space for groups with diverse seating, indoor and out. Disco ball in the bathroom with party music. Pinball machines. Delicious food, beer and friendly servers.

This Mcmenamins is the Grateful Dead Mcmenamins. Also where the Purple Haze Drink originated. We stopped by for some beer flights. They had two pinball machines. I had fun playing on one of them. This pub had a lot of cool Grateful Dead memorabilia. And others intricate painting and art works. They had an open garage door seating where you can sit and enjoy in nice summer months. This pub has lots to see and check out on the walls and ceilings. Very easy going bartenders and servers. Thank you for a wonderful end to our evening.

I do love the McMenamins brand and all of their locations I have been to. This pub is Grateful Dead themed. Service is spot on. Prices are reasonable, beer is cold, food is hot, all of the decor is funky and appealing. I would recommend to anyone in the area.

I really enjoyed this meal. We stopped in for a quick lunch. I was surprised there was no one here... the food is good. We all had burgers. They were cooked well and the toppings tasted fresh. The seasoned fries are always a hit. The interior of the Barley Mill Pub is fun and funky. The service was a little slow, I think the guys had a good conversation going back in the kitchen. Even with that, I'll definitely come back.

It's great to be back to McMenamin's - first time at Grateful dead themed Barley location. Walking distance from a friends house with an outdoor seating and heater, so very cozy. Waiter promptly took our orders - starting with Ruby my staple, and Captain Neon, as I'm craving blue cheese as of late... and bacon is a must. There's plant friendly options as well which I may try next time.

We had the Cajun tots and Thai peanut power bowl. The tots were super good and we highly recommend them. There was only one server and he even made the drinks, man was working super hard and we appreciated his efforts!

Ok, I get that this is a Grateful Dead themed place which I honestly did not realize until I came in because I just thought brew pub. BUT, seriously playing the same Grateful Dead song the entirety of our visit earns the two star...because we were nearly homicidal after the hour we were there to enjoy a meal. We would have sat outside but three tables in a row had dog owners. I adore dogs but not when I am trying to eat and nothing at all against those kind folks who were lucky enough to have sweet pups to dine with instead of Jerry Garcia. The meal itself was grand - we happened to hit happy hour so $3 for a giant basket of tots is alright indeed. I ordered the Dungeon burger which was a proper medium rare and loaded up for me. I am also always amazed at how awesome RC tastes when I am at McMenamins to wash everything down. We split their newly added seasonal desert when we heard about it. Passionfruit tarte - who can resist that?! As you shouldn't - it was delicious. The staff was amazing also. So thank you for everything except the music.

    Best onion rings ever

I like coming here, always a pleasant experience. Their beer is somewhat pedestrian, but they have a nice diverse food menu. We had some great junk food at the location on Hawthorne last night: too many scooby snacks and onion rings. The latter are pretty wonderful - the onions are actually cooked through enough where they don't pull out of the batter when you bite into them, they kinda melt in your mouth. The scooby snacks are a great way of consuming way too many grease calories in a short period of time. We sat outside and the service was pretty horrible. Hardly saw our waiter, and we ordered some salad wraps to cap off the evening and they managed to omit the hummus and pita chips :-( The outdoor seating is wonderful late in the day because it's on the East side of the building so it gets good shade and you aren't deafened by road noise. They seem to put the rookie waiters over there though.

Cheeseburger with bacon and Cajun tots

The service was fast, the food was fantastic, the beer was good. We got the burger and Cajun tots and added bacon. The tots dipped in that chipotle ranch hit the spot. That chipotle ranch could (should?) be bottled and sold tbh. The burger was juicy and overall just delicious. I'm happy I visited this spot while traveling through Portland.

Food menu and cocktail menu are tight yet varied and really highlight that this is an elevated neighborhood bar. 2) Decor is super cute. Outside tables (on the side street) had a dive bar vibe at first but then you walk inside to see that it's actually a gorgeous space. And the patio out back is PHENOMENAL. Back patio is maybe best outdoor space in SE Portland. 3) Magnificent staff. Bartender was Caitlyn (I think? I'm so bad with names, sorry). I haven't had a friendlier, more bubbly bartender in all my life. Definitely not in this city. There was even a woman who was being super rude and condescending about getting IDed while I was there (her and her friends looked 19-22ish, didn't understand her gripe) and Caitlyn handled it with poise and grace. The guest/lady was genuinely awful. I can never understand how servers and bartenders take that sort of treatment. They deserve better! 4) Surprisingly impressive whiskey selection for a neighborhood bar. Not huge but certainly curated. I didn't get anything fancy but it's nice to know the options are there!! Overall: If I lived closer this would probably be my every week haunt. This is a good neighborhood bar where you can be comfortable and cozy and not spend a lot of money if you don't want, but if you want to throw the pinky up and get a bit bougie you have plenty of cocktail and spirit options with an aesthetic that is kind to the eyes. 10/10, would recommend, and will return!

I brought home some as leftovers three months ago and my eight year old is still tunneling through them like she's a mole dropped into some f-ed version of Candy Land. Look, I know the fine bartenders here promise chicken and jojos the same way cable promises service: it'll arrive somewhere between the hours of 6 and 10:00 PM. But sit your ass in the chair, get a PBR and wait.
