    Quirky decor.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Come discover the first McMenamins. Hear the Grateful Dead, see the signature decor, and eat a pound of Cajun tots.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]This location is special due to its history. In 1983, a northwest institution was born.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] McMenamins brews beer and spirits, serves good pub grub, and sources their meats ethically. They have gluten free options, and label their menu vegan, gluten free, etc. They make great cocktails and have interesting "working beverages". Their apple cider is AMAZING. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They have some outdoor seating and modular walls creating hybrid seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Quiet, small, but fun and always some parking spots. It's a local chain, but from what I can tell and I've been to many Mcminamins, the service here is top notch. Very attentive table service and the pub food you expect at these places. Burgers are fresh and hot, soups are rotating and made well. The only down I would say is, like many places, and not unique, the prices have gone up significantly, in my opinion. $16+ for a sandwich, (chips as a side), etc. so if doing it big on a budget, hit up for happy hour, or late night and go after 8 pm for the deals.

This Mcmenamins is the Grateful Dead Mcmenamins. Also where the Purple Haze Drink originated. We stopped by for some beer flights. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They had two pinball machines. I had fun playing on one of them[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This pub had a lot of cool Grateful Dead memorabilia. And others intricate painting and art works[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They had an open garage door seating where you can sit and enjoy in nice summer months.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]This pub has lots to see and check out on the walls and ceilings.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Very easy going bartenders and servers. Thank you for a wonderful end to our evening.

A nostalgic favorite! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Huge space for groups with diverse seating, indoor and out.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Disco ball in the bathroom with party music.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Pinball machines.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Delicious food, beer and friendly servers.

I do love the McMenamins brand and all of their locations I have been to. This pub is Grateful Dead themed. Service is spot on. Prices are reasonable, beer is cold, food is hot, [[HIGHLIGHT]]all of the decor is funky and appealing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I would recommend to anyone in the area.

I really enjoyed this meal. We stopped in for a quick lunch. I was surprised there was no one here... the food is good. We all had burgers. They were cooked well and the toppings tasted fresh. The seasoned fries are always a hit. The interior of the Barley Mill Pub is fun and funky. The service was a little slow, I think the guys had a good conversation going back in the kitchen. Even with that, I'll definitely come back.

It's great to be back to McMenamin's - first time at Grateful dead themed Barley location. Walking distance from a friends house with an outdoor seating and heater, so very cozy. Waiter promptly took our orders - starting with Ruby my staple, and Captain Neon, as I'm craving blue cheese as of late... and bacon is a must. There's plant friendly options as well which I may try next time.

We had the Cajun tots and Thai peanut power bowl. The tots were super good and we highly recommend them. There was only one server and he even made the drinks, man was working super hard and we appreciated his efforts!

Ok, I get that this is a Grateful Dead themed place which I honestly did not realize until I came in because I just thought brew pub. BUT, seriously playing the same Grateful Dead song the entirety of our visit earns the two star...because we were nearly homicidal after the hour we were there to enjoy a meal. We would have sat outside but three tables in a row had dog owners. I adore dogs but not when I am trying to eat and nothing at all against those kind folks who were lucky enough to have sweet pups to dine with instead of Jerry Garcia. The meal itself was grand - we happened to hit happy hour so $3 for a giant basket of tots is alright indeed. I ordered the Dungeon burger which was a proper medium rare and loaded up for me. I am also always amazed at how awesome RC tastes when I am at McMenamins to wash everything down. We split their newly added seasonal desert when we heard about it. Passionfruit tarte - who can resist that?! As you shouldn't - it was delicious. The staff was amazing also. So thank you for everything except the music.

We had two of the most charming women as servers, but I wrote down their names on the merchant-copy of the receipt, so I can't tell you who they were. They change the menu alot, so I hope this is still be on it when you go. For dessert, "The Floating Island". Start with cream anglaise, then add green strawberries and rhubarb around the edges (totally counter intuitive for me, but worked perfectly!) and in the middle is a rectangle of meringue (the best I have ever had in my life) and a spoonful of lime granite to top it off. Spectacular! Go for it and Go !!!

That is, until you turn your attention to the wedge of a jojo next to that beautiful wet-tshirt-contest winner. I brought home some as leftovers three months ago and my eight year old is still tunneling through them like she's a mole dropped into some f-ed version of Candy Land. Look, I know the fine bartenders here promise chicken and jojos the same way cable promises service: it'll arrive somewhere between the hours of 6 and 10:00 PM. But sit your ass in the chair, get a PBR and wait. Because, much like the bygone era of cable, when the boob shows up uncensored, late at night, and wrapped seductively in paper and BBQ sauce (don't judge me! We came here because I heard they have a great seafood menu and my kids recently started enjoying oysters and other shellfish that used to be "gross". We got here about 15 minutes to opening on a Friday night and there was already a line. We were fortunate to still get a spot outside which worked out because it wasn't too hot and the outdoor space is much more spread out than inside. We ordered a dozen oysters to start. Love their various droppers with infused mignottes and hot sauces. Really made it fun to try out different combos. We also got the cold smoked mussels, the hamachi crudo, grilled oysters, lobster roll, rockfish, and the little gem salad. In order of least favorite to favorite, the little gem salad was good but just not that memorable or spetqcular the way the other dishes were. Next, the grilled oysters were flavorful with the garlic and lime but I wished there was a little more kimchi flavor and overall more sauce given the size of the oysters (they were huge!). The lobster roll was good and I appreciated the different take on a lobster roll but my favorite lobster rolls that really accentuate the lobster flavor and this masked it a little. The hamachi crudo was a surprise. It's a dish you see a lot and I was a little worried about how the pineapple might overtake the rest of the flavors but that didn't happen. The balance between sweet, savory, sour, and crunch from the peanuts was perfect and every bite was really enjoyable. Finally, my favorite was the cold smoked mussels. You never know how fish sauce and tom kha might overwhelm everything but again, their chef understands flavor balance really well. You could taste all the flavors, the smokiness, the slight bitter and sour umami flavors and slight sweetness to round it out. It was outstanding and highly recommend. They also have great cocktails that go well with their dishes. Really enjoyed the experience here and will definitely come back.

Scotch Lodge recently won Outstanding Bar at 2026 James Beard Awards and it absolutely deserves it…read more The cocktails here are seriously some of the best that I've had in the States. In addition to creative, well-prepared cocktails, the food here is equally spectacular. My wife and I shared their Wagyu tartar and a soft shell crab sando. You'll see these two dishes at virtually every single table if you look around the restaurant during your visit and there's good reason for it: these two dishes are perfectly executed. Every piece of the tartare is evenly cut the be the same size, and there wasn't a single piece that was stringy or chewy. The dish itself was well-seasoned, and the freshly fried kettle chips provided the crunchy texture the dish needed. The soft shell crab sando is served between two toasted slices of rich, decadent, buttered milk bread. The crab has a wonderfully crispy outer shell and atop of the crab is a mountain of crunchy, tangy slaw. They must have done a bunch of R&D and experimentation playing with the ratio of the ingredients because every bite was balanced. If there's one dish you have to order during your visit, make it the crab sando. The two cocktails I tried out were the "loch stock" -- mezcal, smoky scotch, ancho reyes, lapsang souchong sweet vermouth, and mole bitters, and the "up country road" -- bourbon, coconut-inflused sweet vermouth, macadamia nut campari. I cannot articulate how incredible these two drinks tasted. The flavor profile of the drinks are punchy and exactly as described. I am certain there's something on the menu for everyone's palette. I would highly advise you to stay hydrated throughout your visit so you're able to make it to two, or even three round of drinks. The drinks are that good. I cannot recommend Scotch Lodge enough if you're visiting Portland. Definitely make a reservation and be sure to try out the food as well.
