I wanted to love this place because of the reviews of the Italian food, but sadly the kitchen had closed down by the time I moved to Astoria last year. Recently, I was thrilled to notice, after a glorious walk around Astoria Park, that they had posted a new menu on a chalkboard in front. Chicken wings, burgers, and other standard bar food that made me want to check it out. I came back and I love this place! It has a great local vibe. Many TVs for viewing sports, colorful regulars that play awesome music on the jukebox, darts and a video golf game. There's also a back yard patio! The service was super friendly and the food is tasty. I've been back a few times and enjoyed a variety of what's offered on their one sheet menu. Astoria runs the gamut between disappointing me and making me hunger for more, more, more. Hellgate on the Park? More, more, more. And some more. As noted in the previous review Wed through Saturdays only if you want the real deal. The classic Italian restaurant that is Hellgate on the Park does not disappoint where it matters. From the outside it looks like one of the many old man bars that operate all around the neighborhood. Walking through the doors and you have a mix of Sinatra one night and classic rock the next playing through the speakers, a couple of old school Italian guys arguing about some SOB who owes them money and watching the mets blow a close one on TV. This is your typical night here...and it's spectacular. The menu is sparse, only the good stuff for their 1 sheeter. The spaghetti and meatballs (pomodora if you like the sauce how grandma used to make it), shrimp fra diablo, tasty bread/butter to start, lasagna to die for...all amazing. All filling. Most importantly all authentic. The owner is a part of this place. It's a hang out, not a business for him. First night me and the lady visited I noticed the loud table of 8 next to us had something not on the menu...hmmm, wtf I thought? It looked sooo good. Well, I guess the owner saw us looking. He stands up from the table and strikes up a convo introducing himself and whatdayaknow, hands us a plate full of deliciouso secret menu goodness. Big points. The food is amazing. The setting is comfortable. The characters are all around you. The waitstaff is attentive but not intrusive. This place does no wrong, because it doesn't set out to be some fancy dancy over the top greaseball joint, it's real NY italians making the food their moms made. The place is a smallish bar with a simple booze selection (kinda sparse on whiskey selection for my taste) but there is a dart board, TVs all over and a great, wide yard with seating in the back. This bar/restaurant is across from Astoria Park. Wed. thru Sat. there's an Italian chef cooking home style, freshly prepared meals. Very tasty large portions, not expensive either. Nice wait staff. 4 of us ordered diff. meals: chicken parm, chicken marsala, clams with linguine and shrimp fra diablo. Everything was great. Considering the pickin's are slim in this area, this isn't a half-bad establishment. Friends of mine play football in the park every year on New Years day and this is their post-game establishment of choice. The bartender was super friendly and remembers the crew, despite their only visiting maybe once or twice a year tops. It's your generic little bar, nothing fancy. They have a decent selection of beers and rotating beer specials. It is cash only so be prepared. Honestly, It's a nice little hole in the wall. If you want something fancy go to 30th Ave or LIC or Manhattan. If you're just looking for a local spot for a few brews and want to get to know your local bartender without the crowd, come here. The true definition of a fun neighborhood bar. People say the crowd is a bit on the older side...but I find it an enjoyable mix of hilarious older folks and working class younger people. Never a dull moment. All the bar staff are awesome people. Kim and Igor crush it on NFL Sunday. Paul is a true gentleman on MNF. Trish is awesome on Thurs Night Football and on all her night shifts. Juanita is a funny and always charming Saturday bartender who will hang with you after her shift. Maria is a huge personality having warm hearted lady of the day shifts. Two for Tuesdays. Bucket deals. Every single game imaginable on the tv's. If it already ain't on they will find it. From soccer, NFL, MLB, NBA, to hell I've even watched Australian league football here. Although many people were disappointed to see this place change hands, I have to admit that I love what the new owners have done to Hellgate on the Park. Amidst all of the super-loud, always-packed sports bars in Astoria, this is one I truly enjoy. With a dozen TV's and the NFL Direct Ticket, not to mention beer buckets and pitchers, it's a great place to watch the game(s) and hang out with friends. The back yard is just an added bonus, especially considering they put a TV back there as well. Even though the kitchen isn't fully operational yet, they offer snacks. Came here for dinner last Friday and was pleasantly surprised. The bartender was a doll. The chef treated us like family and gave us a little taste of this and a little taste of that. The food was delicious and the servings were huge. AND they made me what wasn't on the menu. There was no room for dessert or coffee when we were done with dinner! As a matter of fact. OK, being from Kansas City I need two things in my sports bar. I need GREAT BBQ and a great bartender/bar options ($). I moved to Astoria back in 04' and I used to go to HGOTP when I wanted to just drink beer and not be bothered. Yeah it was dark and full of ole' school locals which could be weird at first, but it was always inviting and no one ever gave me the "what the hell are you doing here vibe". Now in 2013 this is my "go to place" for sports and BBQ! The BBQ is UNBELIEVABLE!! In the area we have The Strand, Butcher Bar and a few other BBQ joints, but none of them can even compete with Hellgate on the Park as far as quality, price and service goes. I would strongly suggest getting their Sampler Platter for $16. It is more than enough to feed two people and will make you understand why I'm so enthusiastic about this place! I also suggest if you come with at least 4 people to order the "Tower" of beer. It's around $23 for domestic beer and you will be all set for at least 2 hours, unless you want to get crazy which I totally understand for that price. The crowd is a good mix but all in all, the vibe is nice and refreshing and people who go there are blue collar workers (such as myself) who want to get the most out of their money. This place is a secret gem, but if you want damn good BBQ, give it a try, you will definitely be surprised and it won't break your wallet like all these other so so BBQ joints in Astoria. Also, they have a bartender there named Collin Cosell, he's the grandson of the legendary Howard Cosell. Just an FYI, if your into sports, he's a great bartender to have and he will always leave you with a smile on your face. Now go get some of that good ass BBQ! read more

Beers, shots and a surprisingly good television system that allows for fantastic sports viewing, small or large groups. I love this bar. The fresh complimentary popcorn whenever you come in and their outdoor courtyard (with a TV and tables) would be enough, but the bartenders are super friendly and welcoming. They have a great selection of drinks and Twofers on Tuesdays. Not only do they play great music, but I always love a good jukebox bar where you can dance to whatever you want to play...and Hellgate is definitely a good place for that. Hellgate on the Park is under new management ... Pat & Joe added flatscreens and 4 different beers on tap as well as some of the tastiest pizzas we have tasted on months. In under 2 weeks the crowds have multiplied and they also offer a huge backyard beer garden and front tables on the curbside. Sunday and Monday offer every NFL game on huge flatscreens and tuesdays are 2 for 1 with beer and pizza specials every day. Online jukebox with almost anything for anyone ... This bar is was neighborhood bars are all about. Everybody knows the bartender and he on the other side knows by heart every single client and what is their favorite drink.
