    57. Fahfahena Limeade Smoothie
    Kevin K.

Fahfakhina or Araisy. So yeah, have you ever tried to stress test the thin line between smoothie and shake? There's always this thin vaneer of "healthiness" hidden behind a smoothie, like if you toss an apple, a banana, 2 raw eggs, whey protein powder and peanut butter into a blender with a scoop of ice, somehow the contents of the dasher is now automatically healthy, and you'll get swol/ripped if you pound 3 a day, deadlift 230 on the press, and spend 3 hours at the gym. Well, the problem here is that you can easily spend 20 minutes working out and 2 hours 40 minutes posing, and then ingest almost 1000 calories on the wrong thing (whipped cream + ice cream + mango syrup). Me, I just go directly to the jugular, ignore the healthy swol muscleboy nonsense and go for the stuff that I like. And what do I like? Araisy. What's an Araisy? It's an Arab milkshake/smoothie that contains fruits and nuts, commonly served in places like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen or the UAE. Since I frequent Arab neighborhoods like the Upper Steinway section of Astoria and/or Bay Ridge, it's one of those things that I have an affinity for - of course, most coffee joints have a variant of that (like Selab served at Elkayam in Astoria), as does most good seafood places (Sabry's have their cocktail), but you know which version I like? The one at Hemo's. What do they have? Cold mango yogurt, chopped apples and mango, peanuts, dried dates and raisins, generously annointed with berry syrup. How much is it? 20 oz is about 7 bucks as of Summer 2022. Why should you have it here? Eeeh, I had it at other places, and they are either runny, flavorless not cold, doesn't have much nuts and fruits, or a combination of all 4. You want it to be thick, flavorful, cold with plenty of fixins'? Get it at Hemos. You know what's great? Walking along Park Slope, 3rd or 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge, or Upper Steinway in Astoria with an Araisy in your hand (yes, they have multiple locations). You know what's even better? Pay 2 dollars extra and spring for the Fahfakhina - which is an Araisy but with ice cream added. Know what's even better than that? The Hemo Special. A halal hamburger (a bit thin on the patty), fries and a freaking Araisy for 14 bucks (not available at Park Slope). Yeah, you can certainly give their juices and crazy sandwiches a try, or go next door for their coffee. Me? Araisy or Fahfakhina. Always.

(I'm going to update and preface my review by stating that Hemo's Spot spinach pies are the best I've had in my entire life. Loaded with spinach and so lemony. And that dough! Very delicious). Popular corner spot on 5th Avenue that has undergone a name change (possibly new owners). Whenever in the area, I drop in to have some kind of beverage, whether hot or cold. In addition to tea, coffee, smoothies and juices, it seems they've expanded with more food choices. Burgers and fries seemed to be the go to lunch today, but there were many Middle Eastern delights (my preference) such as spinach pies and a variety of breads--cheese, meat and my favorite, Za'atar loaded with all those delicious spices. It smelled delightful in there. I also saw Medjool dates and snacks/desserts available for purchase. Some necessary information: ample seating, restrooms, credit cards accepted (you'll be charged tax) and friendly/helpful staff. I ordered the #97 juice, super protein, which was kale, apple, pineapple and cucumber. Reasonably priced at $5 for 16 ounces. I also took home spinach pies and a Za'atar bread ($3 a piece). I like Hemo's Spot. Quick, delicious, clean and hits the spot for a craving (pun intended).

There are two Hemo's - one is a juice bar/cafe, and it's next door to their other spot which is... also a cafe, but with more food? Honestly, not sure. I just wanted coffee so I stopped in the smaller one (it's on 5th and not on the corner). They have lots of baked snacks, spices you can buy by weight, and of course, coffee. Got a latte, and it was pretty damn good.

So many options, healthy and comfort food. Had Chai here too on a rainy day, mm A welcoming place, attracts so many different types of people. I find it as a gem of a place to get work done with wifi, couches, and nourishment.

3arsi drink: mango smoothie with a syrup, don't know what it is but tastes so good.

Their pros is that they open later than the other dessert places in the area. The place is relatively clean, they also have food which isn't the best, I did experience where the cake tasted a bit off, and once I notify the staff they gave me other options of changing to something else. I do like how usually when I come during the evenings, there isn't a wait or on weekends there might be some wait but overall no complaint.

I went again after a long time and was pleasantly surprised. It was pretty empty on a Thursday night and were pretty much the only table until another table showed up later. Menu is via a QR code not an actual menu book that they used to have. Menu is pretty much the usual stuff: pot of teas, desserts, appetizers and some sandwiches. We all ordered a sandwich and got the squid appetizer and two pots of tea. The service was just ok, it was one waiter and sometimes we really had to get his attention. Didn't give us any water in the beginning and we had to ask for some near the end. The environment is the usual Prince tea environment - cafe aesthetic, nice for getting together and catching up with friends. The food was kind of pricey... but Prince tea is usually kinda pricey. But honestly, I was pleasantly surprised by the taste of the food. The food all tasted pretty good. The katsu sandwich was really good, the squid appetizer good, the fries and salad not bad. The sukiyaki burger was just meh so I would recommend to skip. The two teas: lavendar milk tea and passion fruit tea were really good too. Overall: food was better than expected but pricey. Service is lacking and environment is good.

We were lucky enough to get a fresh batch of rice, and both rice balls came out piping hot, with fluffy rice and a generous amount of protein. The kani was dressed with kewpie mayo, while the eel was brushed with teriyaki sauce. To be honest, both sauces could use some work, but overall, great value!

I live in Stony Brook so when the stars are aligned and there is no traffic on the Belt I can order a great cuppa coffee before work. I park across the street and was the first one in the small establishment. I see two gents hustling behind the counter and zero in on the baked goods. I'm not understanding the spiced lattes but after a few times, I'll try the Cardamom latte but for now I'm sticking with a Flat White and a freshly baked croissant. The flat white I ordered? Perfecto. If a good cup of coffee costs the same as a chain coffee slop they serve to the masses, I'll take a well crafted coffee from Clockface Coffee to start my day. Hopefully, if the traffic is light on the Belt Parkway, I can stop by in the morning. I grew up in Canarsie but all the great local places I keep finding by the job, Bay Ridge rocks!

I ordered avocado toast with eggs and a pastry. The only real positive was the bread itself, which was fresh, large, and actually tasted good. Unfortunately, that is where the positives ended. Although the avocado seemed less generic than standard store-bought guacamole, the taste was not good. The eggs were terrible -- they looked very unappetizing, tasted awful, and appeared nothing like the photo shown on Grubhub. The same photo also showed a small side salad, but no salad was included. I requested chili oil, and that was missing as well. The added cheese had virtually no flavor, so overall the dish felt careless, incomplete, and extremely unsatisfactory. I also checked the box requesting utensils, but no utensils or napkins were included. However, to be clear, this review is not about forgotten utensils. It is about the overall lack of quality, attention to detail, and customer care. The pastry was another culinary failure. It was sold under the French name -"Pan Au Raisin" but it was nothing like what real "Pain Aux Raisins " supposed to be, it was bland, greasy, oily and missing the traditional custard base plus it was delivered in an undersized paper envelope that left the food exposed, a clear violation of basic sanitary standards for food transport. Most importantly, this order caused me stomach pain and GI upset. This was the only food I had eaten in a 24-hour period, and more than 24 hours later I still felt unwell. The owner's reply to my original review was patronizing, dismissive, and refused to take any real accountability. Instead of addressing the food quality issues, the missing items, the poor packaging, and the physical reaction I had to the order, the response tried to reduce the entire problem to utensils and push the conversation into private email. I am keeping this public so other customers can make an informed decision. I wanted to support a new local business, but the bad taste, poor execution, misleading presentation, lack of care, and dismissive management made that impossible. Based on this experience, I would not order again and would not recommend this place to friends or family.
