Like father like son. Honest, reliable and dependable. In 1999 Steve, (the father) installed a refurbished AC exterior unit and told us it would last 15 or 20 years. Fast forward 23 years and this unit started making a rattling sound. Scheduled next day service with Steve. His son Barry showed up. Replaced a loose screw on exterior panel and only charged for the service visit. Unit humming again. Let us know unit has another 1 or 2 years of life. My wife and I have been living in a cold house for the past month because the repair guy we hired to fix our heater just vanished after indicating he was waiting for the part to come in. And this guy came as a recommendation from a family member. What a joke. So we decided to fire him and search for a new repair guy through Yelp. Hempel Air Conditioning was the first place that showed up when we searched in the Walnut area. We thought we'd give him a try. After all, we needed to have the heater fixed ASAP since it's now going to rain for the next week. I never got to meet Steve, as my wife was the one home at the time, but from what she told me, this guy sounds very knowledgeable and fixed the problem quickly. And the price was very reasonable. He didn't even have to order the part; he just went to a warehouse and found what he needed to get the job done. It's good to know we have a reliable heating/air conditioning person near our house. I called Hempel based on the great reviews on Yelp. This is one of the reasons why Yelp is the most useful thing on the internet. Without Yelp reviews, you risk getting flakes and phonies especially when it comes to home and A/C repairs. I know since we had to put in over $20,000 worth of repairs into my home after a disastrous stint with a horrible tenant over the course a year. I called Hempel and they were very nice over the phone and accommodated my 9-5 working schedule. Steve stopped by on a Saturday morning when we were having the 100+ daily temperature heat wave. I do appreciate him coming over on a weekend in the busiest season for AC repairs. He found the issue right away. The tenant has yanked out the water hose and broke the reservoir that collected the excessive water. I had several Chinese handy man doing patch up jobs that supposedly would fix the issue to no avail. They ordered the part for me and it took a couple of weeks. They once again accommodated me and came install it over a Saturday. Even though the price was a bit steep at $600. I got a fully functioning AC now and not have to worry about water all over the garage. read more

He called back later that afternoon and we set up an appointment for him to be at my house within a 2 hour window on the following day and he showed up as scheduled. My AC unit is 28 years old and in the past, AC repairmen have always tried to sell me on a new unit, but that was not the case with Steve. He's obviously been doing this for a while and immediately recognized my unit, asked me a couple questions, and in a matter of minutes he diagnosed the problem - a blown transformer that shorted out due to some bare wires at the outside unit. He had the part in his truck and fixed everything on the spot. While he was at it, he topped off the freon in my system. The story goes like this. I had Edison come over to install the summer energy rebate on my AC. The guy told me my AC is broke because the fan outside on the compressor is not spinning. So I have to fix my AC before they can install that unit on my AC. I contacted Steve and made an appointment. Steve is very prompt. When I talk to him, he is very professional and knowledgeable and answered all my questions about AC (including upgrade into a new AC system). He gave me pros and cons of doing either way, and I've decided just to go with repairing the fan. I had called Steve a few months ago in order to try to diagnose and repair my AC unit due to a low temperature split, and his immediate diagnosis was that due to a AC compressor issue it would be best to replace the whole outside unit for ~$2600 ($1900+700 parts). As I've already researched the typical cost, I was not stunned by the figure. I eventually got my Home Warranty to cover the repair, but only after taking 4 months of constant repairs because they kept misdiagnosing the issue (#1 Added freon - leaked out, #2 Flushout my lines, nope, #3 replaced the compressor pump - all the coolant leaked out a month later, #4 Finally replaced my whole condensor assembly with a new unit - Voila!). While I still saved money with my Home Warranty, Steve got the diagnosis correct the first time around. I called him again a few months later for my Parents AC unit which was not working right. A Costco HVAC guy had came by a while earlier and said we needed a whole new system for $12,000. Steve said it just needed a hard-start capacitor with the HVAC. So for $150 (parts included), he repaired my parents AC unit and other than a simple blown fuse, its been working great since! I'd highly recommend him. read more

I turned to YELP to help me find an a/c repair person. After seeing the ratings and reading the comments, I decided to give Steve a call. I left him a message on Mon (8/29) and he returned my call that same evening. Seeing that our a/c was installed in 1996, I told Steve I felt some freon was needed. Given that we were in the middle of a heat wave that week, he stated that he would not be able to come out until Wednesday, 8/31......understandable. He gave me an approx quote for parts/labor and said he'd be here between 1-2p. Fine. Wednesday arrived and at 11:40a he called and said that he could come early if it was ok, said he could be here within 15-20 mins. He got here at 12n. He checked the filters in the furnace first; cleaned and replaced the ones inside. Then he went to a/c unit and stated that the freon was low. As he charged the unit, he cleaned it. Please do not ask what he cleaned, I could not tell you. As he charging the unit, I was able to feel the difference inside right away. After his services were rendered, he gave me my total.... an amount lower than what he quoted me. When he saw my method of payment, he lowered the amount again!!! Look no further! These guys are the real deal. As with everybody else, I found them through yelp. I have around a 11 year old unit that recently went out. Steve confirmed again with me in the morning for our appointment at 2 pm and his son Jason arrived early at 1:50 pm. He was able to diagnose the problem within 10 minutes or so and explained every step of the way. Halfway through, he suggested we add more freon because he said it was low and wasn't cooling as much as it could be. We measured the temperature before adding the freon and after. Sure enough, he was right and the temperature dropped at least another 8-10 degrees. He worked the entire time he was here and explained as best he could what needed to be changed and why. I got an entire fan motor replaced for $385, and 1.5lb for $40. He also changed 2 of my filters free of charge. Absolutely recommend to anyone who is looking to get their A/C serviced. Steve was very prompt at getting back to me and was very easy to get an appointment catering to our schedule. The diagnostic/initial visit fee was fair. It counts towards the repair if anything is found. Fortunately for our case no major issue was causing our system to fail and he resolved it very very quickly. Why I gave Hempel Air such a high rating is that in addition to a quick fix Steve made my money worthwhile by inspecting the other components of my HVAC, educating me on how my system works, and tips on maintenance and prevention measures to keep it running when he could have took off to his next appointment. Same issue as Anon had (review below) Hempel came out 3 times and my central air unit has gone down 4 times. Last fix was done by son. He showed up took a look and said " I forgot my tools" I'll have to come back tomorrow." Son never apologized for the inconvenience and didn't seem to want to be there or do the job. My instincts wanted not to go with the job but did any ways and my central air is down again. (Freon leaking from unit) Steve installed a condensate pump in my attic 2013 and it went down this summer of 2015. I found a pinched line that was pinched by a zip tie. It leaked down into my ceiling. 1st job - freon leaking - not fixed. 2nd job - replaced condensation pump - broke year and a half down the line. 3 rd job - freon leaking - not fixed read more

After 2 weeks on waiting on my techs who installed my AC to fix my AC. They gave up and told me I had to buy another AC unit. 5-10k. I decided to get a 2nd opinion. This was during the 2015 heat wave and everybody was busy. Voicemail greetings greeted me a we book for the next 2 weeks message. So I finally dialed Steve with Hempel. He came out the very next day and was able to fix my AC within the hr!! Turns out my knuckle head techs installed the motor the wrong way. Steve charged me $500 for a new motor, labor included.
