I was very disappointed in my last visit with family. We came in at 11:20 am. Was going to order the special but was told they were out of it. Then I ordered a sandwich which had been pre-made and was taken out of a refrigerator. It was dry and tough. The service was horrible. When the food was delivered it was tossed to us. No smile. Absolutely outstanding BREAD PUDDING. Order the BREAD PUDDING. Get one to go and have one while you are there. You may think of picking it up for someone else, but once you try it, you'll keep it for yourself. I had a chicken fried chicken dinner. It was well prepared. Did I mention the bread pudding? They also had a coconut cream pie that is half cocoanut cream and half cheesecake. Get the bread pudding. Start dinner with that. I'd like to try the loaded nachos next time. Not a meat loaf fan. Came here on a Thursday. We got the chicken fried chicken special. It came with green beans, mashed potatoes, and a biscuit. It was good the portion sizes are generous. Was driving through Okemah on the way to another appointment and saw the full parking lot and decided to stop in. Lunch specials offered, plus a full regular menu. Home cooked, good food. Nice portions, good variety. What sets the place apart is the pie. Oh mylanta, I had a piece of coconut cream and it was literally the best piece of pie I've ever had. Our OKFreewheel bicycle ride went through Okemah on June 23rd. So glad our organizers told us about this delightful restaurant and suggested it for our lunch stop. Hen House even opened early for us! Had the Monday lunch special - meatloaf. The meatloaf was good, the cheesy potatoes were so-so and the green beans were green. Overall the lunch was OK, but for $7.25 I will go elsewhere in town for lunch. Next time I'll bring my wife, she would like the atmosphere here better than the food. read more

We found this place while we were exploring Okemah which is the birthplace and childhood home of famed folk singer Woody Guthrie. While looking for evidence of Guthrie and also feeling it was time to eat we found this interesting looking place and it beckoned us to enter. Was I ever glad about that as the meal may have been the best meal of a long trip featuring chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans and a biscuit. It didn't smack of road food in the slightest. It felt like being invited over to someone's house for a home cooked meal. I have tried this place twice and was not impressed either time. They have a limited menu and were out of several items. The waitress was very uninformative and we only found out about an upcharge when we were at the register paying. The sandwich I had was overcooked and didn't taste well. Their soup was good and the cookie I purchased was also tasty. Although the building and décor was neat, I go to a restaurant for food, not entertainment. I wasn't pleased with the $17 dollars I could have spent elsewhere for a better lunch. read more

I have ate here numerous times. The food is always fresh tasting. I've mainly had their wraps and their salads for meals. The prices are cheap compared to most places. You can get a full meal for around 5.00-9.00 bucks. That's the same price you'd pay for fast food, except for a homemade and fresh tasting meal! The food here is not bad, but it's not that great. The food is good enough to get by. The food does its job, it provides you with something to eat. The food is not going to knock you over and make you feel like you had the best food ever. I gave this place one star because I feel that you can cook at home the same stuff they make. Thanks to the Oklahoma Visitor Center for suggesting this amazing place. It definitely feels off the beaten track, and was full of locals who all knew each other. We ordered the daily special which was meatloaf with cheesy potatoes, green beans, and a biscuit for something like $7.50. There is a different special each day. Sometimes it's hard to get good food while traveling, so this was an exceptional meal for us. We will take I-40 across Oklahoma again just to eat here! Delicious meal and friendly service. The people at the Oklahoma Visitors center at the state line recommended it and we are glad we followed their advice.
