I stop here once in awhile when in the area. The store is not too big but is one of the nicer store in the area, located in Prairie Village. It's usually in between where I'm going so I often stop in to pickup something. I like the grab to go prepared meals and the floral shop. They have pretty good selection and a great salad bar. The 119th, Leawood henhouse store has the most hard-working gentleman,{Mike}in the Deli. He is diligent, and kind to all the customers. He is prideful of his character. He demonstrates the highest level of integrity, and is of tremendous value to the henhouse markets. Overall good store for quality, price, selection. However, deli and meat dept are somewhat questionable. Most of the premade sides have this glossy look to them like fast food sauces -looks fake fake. Tried thepotato salad. It was pretty bad. I was in the neighborhood and needed to pick up a few essentials before heading home. I knew this Hen House was in the area and it had been years since I'd stopped here so it seemed like a perfect chance to check it out again and see what it's like! First of all you should know this is a SMALL grocery store for Kansas City. It's nestled into a busy and compact shopping center in Fairway, so be prepared to be patient with other shoppers as you navigate the small and at times frustrating parking lot. All that being said though, it's not their fault the shopping center is compact and TBH it kind of adds some strange charm to the whole thing? Because of this the actual grocery store is tiny and it makes for one of the more unique Hen House locations in the metro. Every inch counts in this location and they make good use of it. Walking through it I found the actual store to be fairly mediocre. It had kind of a limited selection (I know, it IS small), and it's a bit dark for a grocery store. What set this place apart though, and made me feel compelled to give them at least four stars is the staff. I was in the check out line and as they always do they asked for my Hen House card. Now, full disclosure I probably got my own Hen House card back in 2010 but I always misplace it and I never have had my phone number associated with it so it's usually a hassle and they usually just scan the one the have on hand and move me through the line. At this location though, the cashier waited for me to find it and when I did she said "Hey, do you want me to add your phone number to this card?" I was DUMBSTRUCK. Here I am, after over a decade of using this card in this city, struggling to make it work, and this person was not only able but willing to help me out. I had no idea it would be so simple! She updated my card and I was on my way in no time. I can't say I'd go out of my way to visit this location, or that I'll be back anytime soon, but I'm so grateful to their kind and thoughtful staff that have now improved my Hen House experience at any location in the future and for that, they deserve that extra star. read more

I haven't been to this store in about 35 years. It is wonderful. The butcher was so nice and helpful. High quality meat dept. Nice selection of many of my favorite items. The sesame rolls I bought were phenomenal. I wish there was a high quality store like this out north. Great job, I'll be back soon. read more

This market needs a major remodel. I try to avoid it as often as I can. I only go here when I desperately need something in a pinch because of its convenient location to my home. The one positive is that the employees are very nice. They have a major issue with expiration dates. I can't stress this enough. You need to check all dates even on shelved items. I have bought cake icing that expired a year ago. I have seen salad dressing that expired months ago. The produce especially their lettuce expires within a couple of days.The store smells and the deli cold storage is rusty and unsanitary. I get grossed out every time I order deli meat. It needs a major overhaul! read more

The nostalgia of riding my bike up here as a child to get candy can only carry me so far until the mundane task of going to the store as an adult takes its place. I can safely say after many, many visits to Hen House that I lean towards this being a blah experience rather than the summer time treat it used to be for me. The good: It's clean. They have food. They have a pretty good location. Their salad bar is alright. The rest: Parking here around lunch hour is what I imagine it to be like to try to park in midtown Manhattan on a Saturday. It's nightmare fuel. I usually enjoy interacting with the staff at a grocery store, especially in the meat department but something is off here. I've had more bad experiences than good ones, unfortunately. While they do have some good produce, I can't help but feel that the size of this store limits it from having a lot of really good options. It feels like you'll find about 30% less of what you're used to when you come here. That being said, it's a neighborhood spot and not a mega box store. (How's that for talking outta both sides of my mouth?!] Right now, living off the South Plaza, this is really one of the best, closest options, believe it or not. I long for the day when a Whole Foods comes into the neighborhood, but until then, I'm stuck on the 3-star grocery store several miles down the road. read more

Wow. One of my oddest grocery experiences...EVER this morning. I've been wanting to check out this itsy-bitsy Hen House for awhile. This morning I was running early and in the mood for bagels, luck had it that Hen House had emailed me recently that bagels were on sale with their "clipless coupons". The Hen House closest to my house is kind of cumbersome to get in and out of...so this one seemed dreamy. I got there right at 7 am; sign says they open at 6 am. Good. Weird thing is... it looks like they're closed... a bunch of lights seem to be turned off, stocking carts EVERYWHERE, etc. I head to bakery for bagels... donut case is mostly empty, sitting there with doors propped open like they'll be bringing more stuff. Two guys in the bakery are rolling big carts of such items over to the bakery, so I wait there for a bit figuring they'll be bringing some over. NOPE. So I go over to ask one of them...I see the bagels right there, can't I just have some? Guy 1 leaves. Guy 2 says, "I'll be right back". I wait a couple minutes and realize he's over just stocking the bakery tables because that is so much more important than answering my question. So, I stroll over to another section, crawl over the carts of stock that are just sitting EVERYWHERE. Grab a bottle of OJ and a couple of items and head to the checkout. There is this young person dancing to the music at the checkout...I'm thinking "Awesome, this is probably my cashier". Wrong. Turns out he's the cashier's kid. OK, I can deal with that. I start putting my stuff up on the checkout and he's whining to her about something...then he asks for 50 cents for the gumball machine thing. NO. So as she's checking me out, he is standing behind her physically going through her pockets looking for loose change. Yeah, that is AWKWARD. I run out of that Twilight Zone as fast as I can. I guess I'll give them another try, but that was just weird. read more

This pharmacy in Fairway is the only pharmacist I trust. My neighbor and others due to insurance plans have to use Walmart. Neighbor was elderly and taking cancer meds and she didn't discover for 6 weeks that they had been giving her the wrong filled prescription. Fairway always remember me personally and I know I'm getting the correct meds at the best discount. read more

I love the convenience of this store. It turns out to be on my way to or from oh so many things. Due to it's size, I cannot complain of the sometimes limited selection, but I still will. How's that song go? "I can't complain but sometimes I still do." Uh-oh, just quoted the Eagles. Bad news. Things it is great for: FTM bread fix, decent (albeit small) meat counter which has things like ground lamb sometimes, decent cheese/deli counter. The other highlight is the staff is super helpful and will gladly order things for you they don't have...but that defeats the purpose of stopping in on the way somewhere. The biggest drawback for me is the layout. I have had trouble multiple times finding things. Sometimes things they have, other times I assume they don't carry them and just give up. Fennel seed, shallots, fried onion-thingies. Just to name a few. I guess the good thing is the store is only a few aisles, so it can't that ALL that long. read more

I have been shopping this Hen House for more than 20 years and it's my favorite place for its butcher shop, hands down. I use their pharmacy exclusively. But I continue to be disappointed in the produce offerings, which is the only reason they don't get five stars. Convenience is a bitch. I would never return to this dreaded place if it weren't for the fact that it is literally a minute from the house I'm staying at, and thus useful for picking up a few items. So without further adieu... Having the distinction of THE most consistently bad shopping venue I've ever encountered in my 31 years on this planet, I present to you my top five can't miss experiences to take in at the Fairway Hen House: 1. The Prepared Foods Guy. It's ok to make eye contact, you wont startle him. He'll just go back to reading his magazine or having a chat with one of the many employees just kicking' it. Assuming you can get in close proximity, don't expect to be helped in a timely fashion (or in order for that matter), in fact you might want to pull up a chair and crack open that copy of The Brothers Karamazov you always meant to read. Your food is about to make a long slow journey. 2. The Checkout Cafe. Sometimes the stresses of the day get you down and you just need a nice, steaming cup of joe. If you find yourself feeling this way just head over to the checkout cafe! How can you tell which one it is? Just look for the checkout with the longest line of aggravated customers. Up front you'll see a group of at least five employees chatting it up, sipping on their coffees. Feel left out? Grab a cup for yourself! There should be some coffee dispensers by the front door. Empty you say? Hey, they don't fill themselves you know!! 3. The Off Duty Shopping Employee. Don't let the snazzy uniform and name tag throw you off, this employee is "off her shift" and can't be bothered to help you find whatever it is you might need. It's ok, I took her advice and eventually found someone who informed me he "doesn't think we carry that" between pauses in his conversation with the checkout lady. 4. The Land Of No Exchanges On Goods WE break. This experience is more elusive than the others, but is worthy of mention. I had the pleasure of experiencing it when the checkout woman picked up my twelve pack of ginger ale, which ripped open spilling cans all over the floor. When questioned as to why she was placing them one by one into my bag I was told "We can get you a new twelve pack but we'll have to charge you for it." Stay classy Fairway Hen House, stay classy... 5. The Invisible Manager. A list like this can't be capped off without the logical question: "Where the @$%#& is the manager while all this is happening?" My guess? The checkout cafe. All I have to say is thank you HYVEE, you're always there for me! read more

I lost my front teeth a little later than the other kids so I know a thing or two about grocery shopping. I am surprised by Mike P's experience. I have been shopping at this store for sometime and, while the prices are higher than necessary, the place has a good selection and is clean and organized. The absolute best thing about this store is how the bagger Murray carefully wraps and packages anything GLASS. He will tell you which bag contains glass and explain how he has packaged it. Althogh this Hen House is considerably smaller than most of their super-markets, it has the Deli Counter which I consider to be one of Hen House's stronger points. I love their ham salad and cold cuts. Also, their cured meats and cheese section is absolutely wonderful. And for spot-shopping, to pick up an odd or end, this place is wonderful because they are always fully staffed with five cashiers and you can get in and out in no time flat. read more

I come to this grocery store on a nearly daily basis for one main reason: the bread. There should not be a difference in the same Farm to Market baguettes at different grocery stores around Kansas City, but there is! I know this because my family and I can taste the difference. I have talked to the folks at the bakery, and they assure me the dough is the same, so it must be the ovens. Regardless, if I am not going to find the five hours for tending to a home-made baguette (sure, a lot of that is time spent for the dough to rise, but the need to knead needs to be pretty strong to be willing to endure the time and effort to make ones own bread regularly), this is where I will come to buy a baguette. read more

They have a great valentines special where you get 2 lobster tails and 2 filet Mignon's for a decent price. Parking on the hill can be a trick, especially if you have your hands full. I've been going here for years and will continue to do so. I send my girlfriend here when I'm out of town because it's a safe location with friendly employees. read more

Just made it home from Hen House...Just as others have mentioned, it is smaller thean other stores; however I have always been able to find what I needed. There have been a few times I needed some sort of junk food. Alas, they did not carry it, so I prodded over to where healthier options were-where I should have went in the first place, I suppose. Parking sucks, I frequent this place at least once a week and I feel like I am a buzzard circling...today was no different. I did however let an elderly woman have the spot I was going to take- I had my blinker on and everything- she did a horrible job parking and door dinged the car next to her-nope I won't be parking next to her should a space become available. The employees that I have seen are always friendly and ask if I need help finding something. The salad bar here is nice and with your Hen House card I think you purchase 10 slad get the 11th free. I am on my way to my second free salad here. I love this place, but damn the parking is a pain!!! perhaps they should have valet, I would more than likely use it!! read more

Although it is quite a small store I can find everything I need that all the larger grocery stores have. One of my favorite finds here is marinated chicken breasts that are around $3/lb and come in good flavors such as cilantro lime, teriyaki, and lemon pepper. I have not found any place else that sells these. The prices on the items are comparable to prices found at Costentino's and Marshes for the Item I buy on a regular basis. One of the benefits I enjoy here is there is hardly ever a line at the registers where at the larger stores the line can sometimes be 5+ people long. read more

Yes, it's true...this place sells TIppins pies! So, of course, since I'm visiting I had to pick up a pie or two. It's a small store, so things are easy to find.
