I have several weaknesses. Shoes: I feel like we're in a good place now that I've ordered 2 new pairs of summer sandals and some sizzlin' pink patent leather, Gucci horsebit loafers from eBay which will do nicely in any season. Another weakness is fine jewelry. I buy most of it from verified sellers on eBay as well and am building quite the collection. So what what do those things have to do with an optical specialist? Well, just another one of my weaknesses: beautiful sunglasses. I bought 2 very beautiful, yet very different sunglasses recently and I couldn't wear either of them. The first pair, the 1990's vintage Chanel tortoise shells I bought from a seller on eBay. I knew they had prescription frames and would need new lenses. They reminded me of a pair that I lost sometime around 2005. I was always searching for a replacement and the price was perfect. The second pair are Versace was an impulse buy but I love them. I don't have anything like them. They are a steely blue with mirrored lenses. Truly a stellar look. Again very affordable. I noticed that they didn't fit quite right but I didn't have time for the gal at Macys to adjust them for me. Now that we have some awesome sunny days I'll be needing my sunglasses. I had an appointment on Friday with an optometrist in the Pearl but after working 8 hours for 5 days I just couldn't do it and had to cancel. I was feeling much better Saturday and got lucky, I called Hendrix & McGuire and a very friendly woman named Rhonda told me to come on down. Even though she is pretty close to where I live I still needed to take an Uber. Ankle issues. Rhonda gave me a face mask since I didn't bring my own. She asked that if I try on any frames while she's working, to please put them in the green bins when I'm done. I only tried on one pair. I didn't want to make extra work for her. I was quite impressed with the vast amount and variety of vintage frames she has. I didn't get to browse for too long as she quickly finished my frames and they are lovely. She sat me down and adjusted my Chanel frames and got them just right and then was nice enough to adjust my Versace frames. All this in under an hour and less than $100.00. We were talking about a homeless man she had noticed that was sitting on the corner in the sun and in a wheelchair. While I was digging for my credit card or debit card she took a bottle of water out to the homeless man. She's a dove. Meanwhile, I couldn't find my debit card but I do have all the numbers on it memorized. So it was all good. It was kind of funny, we were both trying to set up Apple Pay and got stuck at the end. Examination, fitting, follow up/re-fitting and another follow up. Finally done and I can now share my unvarnished opinion of Hendrix McGuire and Dr Nancy Buset. Brace yourself. They're pretty awesome. I'll let you catch your breath. Okay, we good? You back? Awesome. The last time I got contacts was an emergency trip to America's Best and that was, y'know, okay. Nancy said they gave me a great pair of contacts with the limited technology of the day. Like, three years ago. She mentioned that my eyes showed signs of oxygen deprivation but managed a tone free of nag or lecture. Nice move. The visits are quick, she's got her routine down but doesn't rush the examination. The follow ups are lighnting fast but again it's good. This is not assembly line optometry. My re-fitting went through several pairs of contacts and I never felt like the clock was being watched. The office is comfortable and well maintained, I could tell the building was hella old but that's my job. The space is well taken care of. The admin staff (which is sometimes also Nancy) is also good. It's an independent business so there's no corporate fake-ass fawning, which is the way I like it. It's not midnight diner style sassy, so don't worry about that, either. And there's a pride flag sticker on the file cabinet behind the counter, so if that's a good thing for you, points to H&G. And if it's not, well the hell with you anyway. They also have a ton of glasses and stuff. Four eyes. read more

This wasn't exactly the place I wanted to come into during a vacation. I had to imbibe in the local brews on my first night, so that led to me being an idiot and falling asleep with my glasses on. I proceeded to roll over during the night and bend the crap out of the frame and pop one of the lenses. I did my best to put it back together when I woke up, but while I kinda got a lens in I really just looked pretty stupid with bent up frames. Enter Hendrix&McGuire Optical. I only found out about here because of yelp (thanks a ton!). I was very thankful for finding them. I was terribly worried that I was going to have to buy new frames. Not exactly an expense that I would've liked while on vacation. They were able to not only fully get the lens in but they were also able to adjust my frames again. I have never made a review online for anything, but I felt that it was important to alert people who have challenging issues with their eyesight to not go to this place. When I went to Hendrix and McGuire, I had not had an eye exam in years- I was also a financially struggling grad student at the time and had no vision insurance. My first appointment with "Dr. Nancy" (the one and only optometrist at the time) at first was just fine- she was polite and professional, and the receptionist out front was helpful picking out a pair of frames for me. When I received my glasses it was clear that the prescription was not going to work-- I was having depth perception issues, and I had a terrible headache from them. I went back to say there was no way I would be able to wear the prescription they issued me. Going back and telling them this information was terrible- they were condescending, and gave me infantile metaphors about how they and the science behind it all were right, and I was just wrong. They begrudgingly gave me another exam. They did try, however, during the exam, to get it corrected. Once they gave me another exam and I got my adjusted lenses, I tried them on and knew once again they would not work for me. I had piercing headaches when I wore them and could not function. I did not know what was wrong- I had not experienced these issues in the past. I had spent so much money on the exam and lenses that I knew I had to try to get it fixed, even though I dreaded going back because I could just imagine what they would say. When I did go back they were worse than the first time- Dr. Nancy basically rolled her eyes at me, and her and the receptionist virtually made me feel insane. What I would say for them is that they did try-- they corrected the prescription for a total of 3 times until there was nothing more they were willing to do. However, the results from dealing with them were borderline traumatic. They made me feel completely crazy, and the general sentiment was, 'well, the prescription not working for you is your problem'. I knew I had to keep on going to other places because my old prescription was so weak and I was afraid I was going to go blind in mid-life without finding something that could work. I went to 2 other places that yielded the same results with the prescriptions giving me piercing headaches and visual perceptions issues. I finally decided to go to a LASIK eye specialist at TLC. The doctor there had integrity and was my saving grace. She said I was a candidate for LASIK, but that it was not going to solve the problems I had been experiencing. She suspected that given what I was describing that I could have something neurologically wrong with me. She suggested I go to Pacific EyeClinic run by Pacific University. Pacific EyeClinic is a unique teaching clinic where students come from everywhere to study optometry. They also work with low income patients and those without insurance. That put me in the direction of my solution. They did a complete diagnostic workup on me, and assured that they would work with me until they figured out the problem. They did not have an attitude like they were the experts and if something did not work that they had prescribed, that it was my problem. They were genuinely curious and dedicated to finding the solution, and always went above and beyond. After several diagnostic work ups and only 1 prescription adjustment, revealed that I needed 2 different prism adjustments and bifocals. An MRI I had previously done also showed that I had a rare neurological condition called Chiari malformation where I have an excess of fluid buildup in my brain. It made any adjustment to my vision extremely taxing for my brain to process. The prism adjustment made it so my brain could start processing the increased power in the prescription, in addition to medication they prescribed me to correct the underlying medical problem. All in all, if you have complicated eye issues, Hendrix and McGuire will have no idea how to fix that, and on top of that, they will make you feel terrible for even having a problem that inconveniences them. I cannot say enough amazing things in terms of recommending Pacific EyeClinic. They are miracle workers who are dedicated to working with you in every possible way. What was especially ridiculous to me about Hendrix and McGuire was not that they were incapable of helping me, but that they refused to even consider that there are people out there who need extra attention that a basic eye exam cannot fix. Pacific EyeClinic was literally about a block down the street from them-- they could have referred me to them and sent me on my way. They could not humble themselves to consider that they did not have the knowledge or tools to help someone whose vision is an outlier and does not fit in a neat diagnostic box. read more

I LOVE this place and I have tried many different clinics over the years, but this is the first place where they took the time to get it right. I didn't feel like I was getting rushed out the door. The customer service is exceptional, they are always friendly and work to help you in whatever way you need. Very professional and very detailed. Plus they have an incredible assortment of glasses, vintage and new. The prices are totally reasonable. I highly recommend this place. I visited today for my first eye exam in probably over 10 years. My eyes have been giving me a hard time and I knew it was probably time to get some glasses. Dr. Nancy was really great and made the exam really easy! She explained everything she was doing and why and how. She was really thorough in her explanations of how eyes work and how my eyes work, but made everything very easy to understand. In the end she made her best recommendation and guided me to the best solution without pushing something I didn't necessarily need. I decided to get a pair of "part-time glasses" and they were very kind in helping me choose a solution within my budget. This place is fantastic! I needed of daily wearers and looked through yelp for downtown optometrists. There's a reason Hendrix & McGuire are the highest rated in the area I searched... not only did they have a great, eclectic collection of frames, but the service was super quick and friendly. When I came back to pick up the glasses I found that the frame I picked didn't fit and wasn't adjustable. Kim immediately helped me get into a new (more expensive) frame for free and would have had the lenses fitted immediately had they not been freshly out of stock. As it was they were done by the time I was off work the next business day. I can't say enough about how happy I am with my experience here, and I'll definitely be back. I've dropped my frames about 20 times, and this morning one of the nose pads popped off. The gal at Hendrix & McGuire who helped me was super-nice, worked super-fast, and did a fine job. And she only charged me five dollars. The shop is bigger than it looks from the storefront. They have lots and lots of frames (but no Prada). Wonderful, attentive people in a clean, efficient setting with an extraordinary selection of frames. As I was traveling through Portland, my wire eyeglass frames broke (well OK, I fell and they bent a lot). With my very thick (~12 diopter) lenses miraculously intact, I walked in yesterday morning with my sad story and request for same-day solution. She spent time with me to really understand my needs, then consulted with another expert to develop options. Straightening my badly-bent frames was not an option (although I learned that there is such a thing as a "frame straightener"). Replacement wasn't an option because this model hasn't been made for years. But they found a polycarbonate frame that could fit my oddly-shaped hexagon - oval lenses, and I was out in less than an hour with my well-fitting new frames. I've gotten prescription glasses, prescription sunglasses and contacts from these guys and have always had positive experiences. The ladies who run the place are rad (kind of remind me of wacky aunts or something) and they have a wealth of vintage frames from backstock they found in the basement when they bought the place from the 70s and 80s. The selection isn't as diverse as what you'd find at Hollywood Vintage and, price-wise, this place ain't no Costco. First, let me start off by saying I've never been happy with the glasses I've had in my life. I always felt they made me look owlish, dorky, etc. I've had a need for eyewear since I was 7 years old, and in all that time, I hated every minute. I wore contacts from age 14 to now, age 28, even when I knew I should give my eyes a rest or when I genuinely should replace a tired pair and buy more. Hendrix & McGuire might just have given me my first pair of resilient, stylish, flattering glasses, and they deserve all five stars. Caveat: I have Superior Vision insurance, and DESPITE WHAT SUPERIOR'S WEBSITE SAYS, Hendrix is not in-network. I was informed Hendrix & McGuire have fought with SV to get their names off the list of in-network people. I was assisted in the paperwork to make a claim to have half my $300 bill covered by out-of-network coverage for SV. When I arrived for my 13:30 appointment, I was nervous as I've only recently gotten insurance as an adult (yay self-paid college broke!). I'd never bought my own glasses before, just refilled contacts on 1800contacts.com. I had no idea what paperwork I needed, and really, wasn't sure which of my HR-given insurance cards were right. Kim, the optician there that day, was always kind and chipper in a Midwestern, no-nonsense way with customers coming in and calling, even the rude ones. Kim set me straight, and I even got another appointment while I had to rush home a few blocks to get paperwork. She was aware of my needs and budget and explained everything. Dr. Nancy Buset was knowledgeable and thorough in her examination. She was, as others have said in their reviews, happy to inform me on the finer points of her examination and how/why my Rx was the way it was. She took me around the showroom that makes up the bulk of the front room of the store and explained the pricing and build quality of several pairs of glasses while also steering me toward colors and shapes that suited my pale, honey blond coloring and oval face. I did wait, but that's only after Kim and Nancy took the time to inspect my current, failing spex and salvage the perfectly good lenses into newer, higher quality frames. Kim buffed most of the scratches out, gave it a shine, and set them beautifully. At the end of the day, I walked out with well-known Silhouette frames with previous polycarbonate lenses, which helped keep my cost down for only $300 even, without insurance filed that day, plus labor + exam, plus information on how to dispute with my insurance company. (I also saw a gender non-binary person come in and Nancy warmly asked them which name they preferred: the one they used last time, or the one on their file. It was a nice little touch.) Frankly, most eyewear boutiques in this city are filled with rude staff, overrun with demanding yuppies, and overpriced, fragile crap. There's a reason this place has been in business since '55, and the women that run it now are AWESOME. PS: For those interested, I now have Silhouette's TITAN DYNAMICS FULLRIM in Shape 2877, Color 6053. Those are usually going online for $200 or more, and for the entirety of my visit--glasses exam (without drops), lens recutting, fitting, labor, and no insurance filed that day--was only $300. They off no help when their patients are in need; it's hard to get an appointment, and parking is a nightmare. I went in to replace the lenses in my old frames, and ended up buying two new frames and lens sets for the price of one since they were having a sale, plus they gave me a deal on new lenses for my existing frames. The optician and staff were helpful and nice, and I was able to get everything done in a timely manner. I compared selection and price with four other local places and this one was heads and tails above the others. They also were kind enough to let me upgrade my lenses to have reflective coating without having to pay for a whole new set of lenses, just the extra cost for the coating. Awesome is all that I can say. Dr. Buset was calm, cool, and collected. I love her open explanation of everything that she was doing and why that she was doing it. I have never had an optometrist openly explain the details to his/her procedures. Typically, optometrists are very socially awkward and quiet. Dr. Buset on the other hand was very willing to 'geek' out with me. I also saved a ton on frames with my insurance, which is rarely accepted at most places. Oh, and after the receptionist realized she forgot to charge me something, Dr. Buset did not make me get my credit card out, which again is unlike most places. She truly understands patient care. I had been thinking about doing something different for my newest pair of glasses for a couple years, I didn't want to do the usual run to Costco, choose some mediocre frames, and get some mediocre glasses a few weeks later. I wanted to find some cool old frames, like really old, something with a little history and not some mass produced nonsense. Glasses that would leave me not wanting another pair in a couple years, glasses I could be married to so-to-speak. I thought that this probably wouldn't be a possibility, or if it was it would be crazy expensive. That's when I found Hendrix & McGuire. Not only do they have an incredible selection of unique old frames (they got your usual new brands as well) but they have CRAFTSPEOPLE who are capable of customizing lenses for the old frames! In the age of sterile corporate chains, a shop like this filled with kind and knowledgeable people who are GENUINELY interested in helping you out is like a breath of fresh spring air. I couldn't be more happy with my new (old) glasses and the service and help I've received from the ladies over at Hendrix & McGuire. No way was I going to be able to get out to the optometrist I usually go to so I took the broken frames and the replacement pair I had purchased to Hendrix and McGuire. The repair was literally done while I was standing there, (I had expected it to take awhile), and she didn't even charge me for it. Mr. Hendrix was the first in Portland to get my eyeglass prescription right, and I lamented his retirement. But then Joe DiGregorio came along, and he was even better. After he sold the shop, I retreated to the "nearest" optical only to find mediocre service and quality. After one exhausting four-month delay by a chain optical that ultimately could not fill my complicated prescription, I returned to Hendrix McGuire DiGrigorio and was relieved to find the current owner Rhonda embracing the HM&D tradition of excellence. I have to travel a long way to get there, but it is worth the trip to be in good hands again. read more

Found a flyer for Hendrix & McGuire at Portland State when i was looking for a new place to go to and am very glad I found it. The rates for students and non-students alike are both excellent with me going all the way, contacts and glasses (with the fancy anti-glare, too!). The staff was cordial and generous. As I waited for my appointment a woman came in in need of some emergency contacts and was generously gifted them on the house. The staff seem to care about what they do and really work to help their patients. My doctor (whose name I can't seem to remember unfortunately) was fantastic, answering all my questions, taking her time to explain things clearly, and thoroughly addressing each step to better vision. After a great deal of frustration trying to get new glasses that I could see out of properly (I had tried 2 different places prior without success), I had almost given up on replacing my 7-year old glasses with their scratched lenses. But on my way to the library one day I passed Hendrix & McGuire and noticed all the retro frames in their window and thought I'd check them out. I explained my frustration in getting new lenses that I could see with and they assured me that they could solve my problem. It took 2 vision checks and 3 lens remakes, but they were good on their word and made me two pairs of glasses that work perfectly (an everyday pair and a pair of sun glasses).
