I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 because all the people I dealt with were very nice, and apologetic. However, in the end their ability to provide me with the glasses I need, in a timely manner was severely lacking. I've worn glasses for 45+ years. Although I have a very strong prescription, I've never had to wait more than 3 or 4 weeks to get new ones. When I went in they said that I might have to wait 5-6 weeks, which seemed unusually long, but I was willing to wait if that's what it took. Instead it took them MORE THAN THREE MONTHS!!! I had to wear my old, broken pair while I waited - absolutely unacceptable. They apologized, but in the end they didn't give me ANY discount for having to wait 3 times longer. If I were a business manager and wanted to retain a customer, I would've offered some kind of discount for this extraordinary delay, even if I had to do it apart from insurance. Never again will I pay SO much money for glasses if their slow, incompetent lab can't deliver them on time. read more

And today they generously not only put a screw in my eyeglass frame to reattach the side arm to the front, but actually straightened out the other side arm that was bent and clean the glasses and they work better than ever. 5 stars for Dr. Armstrong, who is knowledgable, capable, and makes accurate prescriptions. 1 star for her receptionists and opticians. I was a patient here for a few years, but left because the receptionists often had a too-cool-for-you attitude or they treated me like an idiot. On top of that, they weren't helpful. Aside from reception, the opticians routinely screwed something up on my lens orders (wrong color on sunglasses, wrong thickness on regular lenses, left off anti-glare coating, etc). It's usually a small screw up that requires new lenses, which requires two additional trips in--one to drop off the incorrect lenses, and another to pick up the correction. My husband once had to take a new pair of glasses back to them three times because they kept screwing up the order. All-in-all, if Dr. Armstrong had good, well-trained front office staff this would be a stellar shop. Unfortunately, the rude reception staff and optician screw-ups aren't worth suffering through to get a good eye exam. Go elsewhere. read more

Just had the worst experience with Alberta Eye Care. I ordered a pair of glasses, metal frames and the lens came back at 4x the size of the frames. A question I asked about when I ordered the frames and lens and was told the lenses would only be the size of the frame or slightly bigger. Slightly is not 4x the size. I literally asked them at the door if this was a joke. On top of that the lenses are cut with jagged edges. Because of Covid they told me to come back in two days if I had issues for an appointment. I can't believe they would even let something this terrible out their door. If you have the option I would go elsewhere. Please see attached pictures. As a follow-up: I tried to work with Morgan and she was so rude. I didn't make the mistake of ordering lenses that wouldn't work in the frames I selected; that is on them and their business for not knowing the merchandise they sell. Morgan made me feel like it was my fault. I explained that I had asked about the lenses when I made the purchase due to my astigmatism. Morgan never apologized for any inconvenience. This has been my worst experience in ordering eyewear. Again, don't support this company. They do not care about their clients, only what works for them. I went here for an emergency type visit during the COVID shutdown. Everything about this place rocked! The staff, the vibe, the professional atmosphere, and their prompt and thorough care for my eyes. My doctor was dressed in a flattering color palette which even mattered his jewel toned glasses. I had been going to Alberta Eye Care for my annual eye exam for the past couple of years. I felt the medical side of the business was good but I was always put off by the pushy opticians that desperately tried to sell me newer and "better" frames at RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE prices. $300, $400, $500 for a pair of plastic frames with a fashion name tag. Not for me, Better deals to be had online, without a doubt. I skipped my exam last year because of covid. Went in two weeks ago and saw a different optometrist at their clinic and she did the routine exam. My vision and my old prescriptions were 90% - 95% satisfactory but I was hoping they could tweak my prescription and make my vision that last 5-10% sharper. My prescription came out almost identical to my previous one from two years ago and I was SHOCKED when the doctor told me that a new prescription was not going to help and that I needed cataract surgery. The sooner the better. No time to waste. I pushed back some and asked why the sudden change and she tried to explain but it made no sense to me. I went home, did a lot more research to find out that "When the quality of your vision impacts the quality of your life, time for cataract surgery". My vision hardly impacted the quality of my life and with my current prescription, I would say next to "not at all". Long story short, I went and paid out of pocket for a second eye exam at a completely different and highly rated eye clinic and the optometrist told me that not only did I not need cataract surgery but that no opthamologist would perform cataract surgery on my eyes simply because it wasn't warranted. He explained that he wouldn't even recommend a new prescription because there was very little change in my new prescription from my current one. I then took out the prescription from Alberta Eye Care and explained to him why I had this exam done today. That it was to get a second opinion of an exam I had done two weeks ago. The look on his face spoke volumes. NO, I DEFINITELY should NOT even consider cataract surgery at this point. I would DEFINITELY think twice about getting an exam at Alberta Eye Care. They are VERY QUESTIONABLE to say the least. read more

Before the end of the year I made an appointment to get an eye exam since it had been a long, long time. No issues seeing, but figured it doesn't hurt to get checked since I have insurance. I picked this place primarily on location and glad I did. The experience was better than anticipated with a very friendly and knowledgeable staff. I do not remember who initially helped me, but through the first set of eye tests she made it very welcoming, especially since all the "new equipment" was unfamiliar to me. Dr. Derry was very informative and helpful with explaining everything she was testing and the then the results. After my exams, Christina, was amazing through the process of picking out glasses. No pressure to buy, since I didn't really need them but she provided lots of options to choose from based on her expertise and my style. I was still hesitant (or too picky) on making a decision, but she still took measurements allowing me to place the order by phone if I made a decision. I went to 3 other places to look at frames and nothing stood out or fit my face like the ones at this location. I went back the same day, and placed the order without looking back. Super disappointed and surprised at my encounter with the staff here. I came by looking for some specific frames about 30 minutes before closing and instead of telling me that it was appointment only, I was informed that everything was put away and I should come back.. So - being surprised that they were closed before they were actually closed, I figured it was some sort of unusual situation. And, I came back. At which point the lady/woman there told me that they were appointment only like a I was an idiot. I get it - I'm sure that people are doing that all day. "I f***ing love these!!" I exclaimed after I tried glasses I'd ordered from AEC. "Oops, sorry!" to the receptionist, "I was just really excited." That was the result of a great appointment. Let's scroll back a bit. I'd noticed my contacts and glasses weren't cutting it so much anymore. As in, things were blurrrrrrrrrry. Grrrrg. I finally buckled down and....booked an appointment online. Easy peasy. They call to remind you the day before & have you fill out forms online (yay minimal paperwork @ the appointment itself!!). I show up and offered a glass of water while I waited. I'd just started perusing the glasses when Dr. Armstrong whisked me away to my appointment. After all the usual "better or worse" and "cover your left eye" fun parts, she got down to business. Instead of just saying "your eyes are worse, here's the presciption" she talked to me about my eye care habits. What I did for work, how much I used the computer, etc. She suggested that I wear reading glasses when doing computer work to avoid eye strain. Also, she explained WHY contacts really do need to be changed out bi-weekly and switched me to month lenses since that's about when I was doing so anyways. After I was done with the brass tacks, Jessica sat me down to review what I wanted to buy that day. Confessing that I hadn't bought glasses in ages, she undauntingly started pulling out random frame for me to try until I found THE pair. She then reviewed my options for lenses, coatings, etc. I was so at ease I found myself chit chatting comfortably with Jessica, something I'm not apt to do at all with strangers. My glasses were done the next day & when I picked them up they made sure that they fit correctly and I was comfortable with them before I left. It's definitely more expensive than say, Costco, but in this case you absolutely get what you pay for. Extremely thorough care, thoughtful help and glasses I absolutely f**king LOVE. read more

Up until recently, I've been served well by this business. However, I recently received an email stating that my vision insurance, EyeMed, will no longer be honored there. I feel drop kicked. Since I'm only able to change carriers once a year in the Fall, now I need to find a new business to handle my vision needs. Here's the rub, the business decision they made wasn't arrived at over night. It was the result of a process, one that evolved over time until they announced their decision. Dr. Armstrong is an excellent optometrist and I will continue to see her annually for my checkups. The sales side of the business seems sloppy and disorganized. I've had two experiences a couple of years apart with a failure to follow up on ordering replacement lenses that are under warranty. In this last instance, I asked for replacement lenses at the end of June when I was having prescription lenses put in a second pair of glasses. When I picked up the second set of glasses I asked about the replacement lenses for the first pair and I was told they hadn't come in yet. I followed up today and it's clear that the replacement lenses for the first glasses weren't ordered until I picked up the second glasses. When I asked why the lenses hadn't been ordered when I first came in, they weren't able to provide an answer. read more

I'm all for supporting independent business and this place is definitely one of them. They don't carry any big names so you won't see any frames from Luxottica (ex. Ray bans, Prada, Persol, etc). Those frames are overpriced and crap anyway. Do research for yourself on that and you'll know what I mean. What you do get is a unique variety of frames that most people haven't even heard of. Most are the frames are classy without the large logos on the temples and there are some adventurous frames for those who want to be bold. Although I didn't buy anything during my visit, I was greeted by a very welcoming staff who answered my questions and let me browse as much as I wanted. Special shout out to Jamie for taking the time to adjust the frames I already had and to educate me on the selection they had. I have been working with Dr. Chiu so far for my two appointments. I have much trauma related to my eyes and vision and so it has been important to me to finally find a provider that I feel I can trust and feel safe with. Even when there was a communication mix up, she handled it so well and cleared up my confusion and provided reassurance. All in all, it definitely helped build a sense of trust. I liked the atmosphere of the place as well and everyone was very kind and great with me considering my trauma. If you need a trauma informed provider, you might consider Dr. Chiu. read more

Looking for new doctors can always be a whole thing. As soon as I moved to Portland, I was in need of a new prescription. After reading a bunch of reviews, I decided to come to Alberta, and I'm really glad l did. It's woman-run, and a super nice and clean space. Ive been seeing Dr. Armstrong, and she has an amazing bed side manner and is super helpful. Since I was getting contacts for the first time as a 30 year old, I was pretty nervous. But shes really open and quick with her communication both in person and online (they have a patient portal which makes it easy to access your info and prescription), and the experiences I've had here have been great. On top of that, her technicians are always really nice and helpful with great bed side manner as well, being very communicative about pricing for glasses and contacts and what your options are. The glasses here are on the expensive side (at least for me, running about the 400-500 dollar range with appointment on your insurance), but they don't make you feel bad for wanting to look elsewhere! Great place, great service, wonderful people. I love their selection of frames. I really felt well taken care of here. I would give 5 stars, but I dinged a star because of how expensive it was. My Rx had changed so I was in need of an exam and new glasses. The exam alone took most of what my insurance had available for me. So for new lenses in my old frames, new glasses entirely, or even contacts, I would have had to pay hundreds out of pocket. I did not have the money so I couldn't buy anything. In an effort to support a local business, I moved from an eye doctor i had used for 8 years in nw Portland. Dr Laura Armstrong performed the exam which I was very pleased with. I got contact lenses. One year later I got a call informing me it was time to get my eyes checked. I informed the scheduling person that as i do not have insurance that covers eye exams i would be on a "needs" basis, as in when my vision changes, I'll reach out to you. I was informed that if I were to lose a contact lens (which are expensive due to a unique condition I have) I couldn't get a new one unless I had an up to date eye exam! My former eye doctor/clinic ran their business differently. In the 8 years I was a patient there I had 3 eye exams and bought countless replacement contacts whenever I would break (hard contacts) or lose one. The Alberta Eye Care model is just another business who wants their hand in your pocket. If you have a company paid health plan, Alberta Eye Care is great. If you have to pay your own medical / eye exam bills, avoid the blackmail model of having to pay for an annual exam. It's all about the money. read more

I had my eyes examined at Alberta Eye Care a year ago. I really did like Dr. Armstrong. She was thorough with my eye exam and she is the first eye doctor to diagnose with with dry eye (which explain a number of things in my life). I've seen her twice and as an eye doctor like her. My issues with Alberta Eye Care have been the other staff. After my exam that day, one of the opticians asked if I would like to purchase glasses that day. I asked how much my insurance covered and found it was not much, so I asked to merely have my glasses adjusted. While adjusting my glasses, the optician snapped the frames. She said she was sorry, but did not sound overly concerned or apologetic about it, stating that this happens sometimes when frames are old. I was offered no replacement, no discount whatsoever, which I found to be poor customer service. She offered to help me find new frames and she put some tubing on the frames so that they would be functional in the interim (and make me look like I had a bonus eyebrow). I ultimately purchased glasses elsewhere. I was going to go back for just an eye exam this week and they ran my current insurance and found that it did not cover eye care. I was given 24 hours to respond to phone calls from them asking if I wanted to keep my eye appointment that was scheduled three days later despite this (they phone calls were Friday afternoon through Saturday morning). If they did not hear from me that my appointment would be canceled. I did not get the opportunity to respond because I happened to be working my 19 hour shift at work and was unable to call back immediately. I would have paid out of pocket as I will be leaving the country soon, but assumptions were made about my desires. I will not go back here again. I would rather have good customer service than be offered beer and wine while having my eyes dilated. read more

I went to my preferred optical shop because they give awesome service and have a great selection. After coming up short there, I went to another newer shop and they were helpful, but again, fairly limited in glasses that work for my (unusually tiny and almost childlike) head. So while walking down Alberta to grab some coffee, I stumbled on Alberta Eye Care. I thought it would be like the rest and frankly, I lacked some faith because the shop is smaller than the other two I went to. And that's when I realized...size doesn't matter. I went in that day and found several pairs of glasses that I thought would work. I went back a week later and they remembered me. Pretty awesome. This time, they spent time measuring my face and suggested they order glasses that would be an exact fit, while also fulfilling my 'fashion needs' (a loose term considering my relatively conservative nature, but a girl can dream and it's my review...) While the other two shops agreed to order glasses, at my request, they insisted I come right in and make a decision within five days so they could send the glasses back. At Alberta, they offered to order glasses and then spent time on two occasions looking at other styles with me. No indication of a hassle on their end. Awesome. The end of the story is this is the first posting I'm typing with my new glasses. Not only are the glasses a perfect fit in size and style, but so is Alberta Eye Care. This place is filled with a bunch of smart, service-oriented, patient, funny and genuinely kind people. We live in a town with more and more optical shops cropping up and as good as those places might be, I 100% recommend you take your eye care needs to Alberta. Dr. Laura Armstrong and her entire staff are professional and knowledgeable. Kelsey greeted me with a warm smile and offered water me when I walked through the door for my first appointment. This friendly approach continued throughout the visit. Dr. Laura employs technology to her advantage -- I was able to avoid dilation and go straight back to work without any down time. I love that they have a paperless system and I walked away with only one piece of paper! Dr. Laura was very thorough and took the time to answer my questions. Her first approach to manage my dry eyes was to prescribe natural remedies that don't cost a fortune. The lead optician, Katie, listened as I described what I was looking for in my frames and said 'I have just the pair for you!' She was very patient throughout the process while I debated over the fantastic selection of frames and explained my bill showing the break down of charges and who covered what. Hours later I received a summary of my visit including all my patient files and I'll pick up my glasses next week. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Laura and her team at Alberta Eye Care. Seriously...these people couldn't be nicer. If they tried. Dr. Armstrong is awesome, and she pointed out a couple of things with my vision and eyes that were missed by my last eye doctor. Plus, they have awesome eye wear. Maybe a little too awesome. I recently picked out a pair of frames that they graciously special ordered for me. But, when I got them back with the lenses and put them on, I thought I looked like Harry Caray. Not a good look. Dr. Armstrong and her staff are amazing. I am a terrible patient - there is nothing I dislike more than a trip to the eye doctor. And I go as infrequently as possible. But Alberta Eye Care has exceeded my expectations. I will not be playing the "call 1-800-Contacts a day before my prescription expires so I can get another year without going to the eye doctor" game anymore. I found my optometrist! I've been wearing contacts that have not been right for me for over a year. I thought that blurry vision was just a part of getting older (I just turned 31). But Dr. Armstrong spent extra time helping me find a pair of contacts that are perfect... and I can see clearly again. Everything about this office is excellent! The doctor was fantastic with my seven year old son, he's super fidgety and sometimes it makes me cringe when doctors get frustrated with his energy, but Dr. Armstrong was amazingly sweet and patient with him. After his exam she took some time to explain his unusual vision issues. He's been wearing glasses since he was 3, and his vision is rapidly getting worse. I felt like his last eye doctor just brushed off my questions and never fully explained his condition. While the doctor was talking to me Katie helped my little guy pick out a really awesome pair of glasses. She has great taste and was also very nice to my son. He gets compliments almost every day! (with his new specs he looks just like the kid from Moonrise Kingdom, so cute!!!) This is the first time going to the optometrist wasn't a complete and miserable pain in my arse.
