My family has been a client of this optometry for about 3 years. The experience has always been great: eye exams were quick and informative, front desk employees were always helpful and attentive. [[HIGHLIGHT]]However this year's annual visit was anything but. It may be due to the change of ownership (I believe it happened either late last year or this year), but my experience with the front desk employee (Sam) was not great.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Per usual, the exam was quick, the new doctor was nice and informative, and the other front desk employee (male with glasses) was extremely attentive and helpful. The issue came about a few days after my exam when I decided to use my annual frame allowance for sunglasses (I've had LASIK correction for a few years now). I called the office, Sam answered and I explained what I wanted to do - I've been utilizing this allowance for years. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Sam looked up my insurance and asked if it was for prescription glasses. I said, "no, non-prescription". She then quickly told me that I couldn't use my insurance allowance for that purpose.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I asked if the insurance had changed in the last year because I've been doing this for years. She said no, it's always been like that and that there's nothing they could do. [[HIGHLIGHT]]After letting her know to double check the clauses of the allowance, she checked and noticed that clients with lasik procedures are allowed to use their insurance for sunglasses. She didn't apologize for initially providing me with incorrect information, she just went on and asked what frames I wanted.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I told her the model and she noted they don't carry those. I thought I had gotten the same brand from them the year before and said "but I got them last year from you". Quicker than lighting she had already pulled up my prior orders to correct me: no I had not ordered that brand with them! [[HIGHLIGHT]]She seemed annoyed that I was even asking. She proceeded to tell me that if I wanted that brand I would have to go elsewhere and referred me to a competitor.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] She didn't give me options to go online and use a prescription to order them myself, or anything else. I asked for my prescriptions (mine and my husband's) and headed to their competitor. Blessing in disguise - the front desk employee at this new place was a delight, the optician helped us get the sunglasses we needed without much hassle and we proceeded to schedule our 2026 annual eye check with them. Had to return the first pair because they were for distance and I had ordered reading lenses. The manager, Amber had told me I had 90 days to use the glasses then bring them back if there was a problem. I could not read with this pair, it was the wrong prescription, so I took them back. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The guy I spoke to, Paige Carpenter, was rude and refused to take the glasses back.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I asked to speak to Amber and they told me to call back on Monday since she wasn't in the office.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]This is very frustrating as I am a senior and need my glasses. Paid over $685 for an exam and glasses in December '25 and still have not received a pair of glasses that are usable. i went in for reading glasses. First pair I received were distance lenses. I had cataract replacement last year and have perfect distance vision. Second pair are completely usless. I don't know what they ordered but it was not my prescription. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I took them back and was told to use them for a couple werks to get used to them.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They said I had a window of 3 months to get the right pair. I cannot read with these glasses. The prescription is not correct. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I took them back again and was told they would not replace them since I only get one replacement (which were the wrong prescription), which is not what the manager, Amber, told me.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]She said they would make sure I was taken care of.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It shouldn't take 3 months to ontain a decent pair of glasses. I have filed a report with my bank and will get a provisional credit so the company can either issue a refund or provide me with the correct lenses. I am elderly and being able to read is imperative. Right now I am using drugstore readers and they are not perfect. Next step is an attorney. Anyone know of an honest one who can assist me? read more

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Unfortunately my experience was the worse optical experience in my life (and I have been going since I was 5).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It took over 6 months to get my contacts prescription, then I felt all year that my prescription was off with my glasses and contacts (I had to stop wearing the contacts). I spent a lot of money and time trying to get things corrected. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Staff didn't get back to me, and I finally gave up![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I just had my yearly exam with a different optometrist and sure enough we found my prescription on contacts and glasses were really off from River City Eyecare. I went with a newly broken frame and they were able to assure me they work with the company and after I was given a replacement frame River City mounted the lenses and adjusted the frames perfectly. I'm not usually one to write reviews, but since I discovered River City Eye via a couple of good reviews, I thought I'd add to the list . I've never had an optometrist, or any doctor for that matter, be so genuinely kind, curious, and willing to answer questions as Dr. Breeden was. I've been going to ****Crafters and Warby P***** for my last few annual appointments -- my experience there generally feels rushed and every pair of glasses I've ordered from them ends up causing me migraines (light aberrations caused by sh*t lenses). On several occasions, I brought my glasses back to their optometrists and they had no idea why the glasses weren't working for me. I came to River City Eye hoping for a better experience and boy did that pay off. First and foremost, the entire staff was friendly and patient. Then, Dr. Breeden effectively dismantled all of the eyesight issues I'd been having for the past few years. On top of the normal exam, she thoughtfully (and I mean THOUGHT-FULL-E) explained how previous optometrists were A) prescribing over-powered lenses and B) why their glasses were causing me to see chromatic aberrations. I walked out of the appointment feeling like a kid in a candy shop. I stopped by River City this morning to see if they would be able to fix my glasses. I accidentally sat on them over the weekend and popped the wire around my right frame. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door, and the nice woman at the counter (not sure if her name) said that she would see if she could fix it for me. A few minutes later, she came over and told me that my glasses were fixed and asked me to try them on. I'm very grateful for the customer service I received and that she was able to help me on short notice. read more

From the start, I left 2 messages about making an appt to buy glasses. No return call. Had to call their Happy Valley office for a real person. I arrive day of appt (May 18 2021) and wasn't told they have have zero customer parking. Gotta park at FedEx a few blocks down and hope don't get towed. Picked out glasses, gave insurance info and was presented with a bill that my portion was $750 AFTER insurance. I thought they made a mistake, paid deposit of $375 and glasses were ordered. I called my HR dept and they spoke with insurance rep who said my glasses were paid in full. I said I received a bill that I owed $750 for my portion. After some dicussion with insurance and River City, I learned they gave me off the charts pricey lenses even though I had told the optical store I was happy with my Varilux progressives. $1100+ for a pair of glasses. WTF !?! That's my house payment. Lesson learned these people are shady AF like used car salesmen. Called optical store on July 2 2021 to see if glasses ready. Yeah, no communication if ready. Again, had to call Happy Valley because no one answered at Hollywood location. They also are claiming COVID for only being open 9-5 M-F. So real people with real jobs have to take off work to pay exhorbitant pricing for their perceived superiority of products. Yeah right... Bottom line, unless you REALLY enjoy being screwed over on glasses pricing. Go anywhere else but this place. I read the fabulous reviews and not a single one bought glasses just had a screw replaced. read more

The staff is very nice. The Dr. I saw unfortunately did not communicate to me the true nature of my eye issue and as a consequence I now have a new pair of glasses I can't wear. Due to the poor communication I made a $300 mistake and now must wait two years for my insurance to provide new lenses. I called to see what if anything can be done and they never called me back. Also, I was told they wanted me to try new contact lenses and they had to be ordered, as of the writing of this review, over a month after they ordered the lenses, I have never been called back. They went over and above to help me. My non prescription sunglasses lost a screw, which ended up being not so simple to replace. It was custom, etc, etc. They spent a lot of time trying other screws, realizing it would not work, directing me to how to get the proper one. And then when I finally had it, the fixed my sunglasses. Both times I was in there, they refused to accept any money for their time, and were happy that they could be of service. I will undoubtedly go back there when I need additional services for eyewear. They offer a level of customer service that is sadly so uncommon these days. read more

My glasses had been sliding off my head for weeks, making me dizzy. My wife had given me some rubber rings to hold my glasses in place, but they quickly wore out. I remembered seeing River City on one of my bike rides so I stopped by 2 days ago to see if they could help me out. No rubber rings were to be had. Instead, they offered to adjust my frames *on the spot*. So I handed over my glasses to the super-friendly optician and less than 10 minutes later I was ready to walk out the door with glasses that really fit when I stopped and asked, "How much do I own you?" The optician said, "Nothing". I don't have to fight my glasses anymore. And it didn't cost me a thing. Can you beat that? Thank you, River City. While the River City folks didn't have a replacement on hand, they did allow me to bring an old pair into the shop and the Frankensteined the 2 pairs together and got me on my way with a minimum of fuss. I had a great experience here at the Hollywood location! The girls at the front counter were more than happy to help me find out what my vision insurance would cover. Then I made an appointment to see Dr. Carrie. She was ready for me when I got there, and was very skilled at the testing procedures. She also chatted and joked with me while she examined my eyes, which made me feel much more comfortable with the whole thing. Her machines are state of the art. I didn't even have to go through the 'puff' test for glaucoma! Dr. Carrie uses a different method, examining the structure of the inner eye itself for signs of disease. Once the exam was over, I got to pick from a small but excellent selection of frames. I ended up going with a super cute Betsy Johnson design that I'm /still/ in love with. The glasses were ready to be picked up in a little less than two weeks, and I get compliments on them all the time. Definitely worth checking out - they've earned my repeat business from now on, which no other eyecare business has ever managed before. read more

I have and will continue to recommend Dr. Breeden to anyone and everyone. I have been struggling with a chronic eye inflammation problem for months and Dr. Breeden has provided incredible and kind care throughout the whole ordeal. She even gave me her cell phone number when I was having an adverse reaction to a medication for my eye! While I am still struggling with my eye problem Dr. Breeden has done everything and beyond what she could do to help. Spencer the receptionist is also really nice and competent! When I go into the office I feel very comfortable and like I am with friends. You can tell that they really want you to feel good and be well. Their prices are also very competitive with online retailers and when purchasing through them you can be assured that the prescription is correct. -- I had purchased an online pair of glasses and they checked them out for me and said they weren't exactly my prescription. I have not seen Dr. Provost before however my friends who recommended me to River City often see him (at the clackamas location) and they love him! read more

I've never much cared for going to the optometrist. They often seem impersonal and treat you as if you are on a conveyer belt of patients. This is NOT the case with River City Eyecare! They are very kind, helpful and care about you as not only a patient, but as a person as well. I had a pretty good experience getting contacts at River City Eye during the pandemic, felt really safe and respected. I ended up leaving my job to go back to school and am now on OHP, which doesn't have any eye coverage. I tried to reorder contacts on January 21, they charged me $150 to order a 6 month supply of my prescription. I chose to order them from River City instead of Costco (which at the time charged $75/6month supply and now charged about $88 total) because they would come in sooner... but I didn't hear from them for the next month. I called to check on my order, and staff told me it was a supply chain issue and would be another couple weeks. The next month, I still hadn't heard from them and called again, and staff told me I could come get a trial pair, but that the real issue with the order was that the contacts they ordered are now obsolete, so they won't be in for another couple months. They let me know I could reorder with the new brand of contacts if I liked the trial pair. Today staff called me to let me know they don't know if the original order will ever come in at all, and that I can order a 3 month supply of the new prescription for just over $100, or a 6 month supply for just over $200. I am on OHP and paying completely out of pocket for my prescription, and these lenses are necessary for me to see. I have been waiting over 2 months now to pay for a 3 month supply of lenses that would be $400 per year.. that's just not in the cards for me. I called another clinic and they were able to tell me that they could give me a new contact lens order and order a 6 month supply of the prescription for $125. I'm sure there have been staffing issues etc. at RCE that caused the lack of communication, and maybe the RCE's doesn't carry the lenses I needed, while other places *can* supply it. But this is very bad quality of care that they could have taken responsibility for and didn't. This experience has been taxing and expensive and I wanted to post a review to warn away any other low income people from this clinic. Shop around, there are much better options out there. read more

I live in the Hollywood district and River City Eye Care is super convenient with exceptional customer service. I came to this clinic through a friend's recommendation, especially since they are affiliated with TLC LASIK Eye Center and after getting the LASIK procedure, I've seen Dr. Provost for all my follow ups free of charge. Dr. Provost is extremely personable and makes you feel very at ease and genuinely seems to care about his patients. The front desk, Spencer and a woman, are both wonderful to schedule with and offer you a drink upon arrival. Overall just a very professional, well-run, accommodating, and client-driven clinic. I recently went to River City Eye Care Hollywood for my first ever eye exam. Dr Provost was very thorough and explained the whole process. He prescribed glasses and the very friendly optometrists helped me pick out frames. The first time I wore my glasses, my eyes were not happy. I went back to the shop where Jake made some adjustments and explained that it might take a bit for my eyes to adjust to the new visual input. I'd bent the frame on my specs and selected this shop based on my location. I did not have an appointment and was welcomed in. The technician warned me that while repairing the glasses that if they were to be damaged it's my responsibility. It was maybe ten minutes and my glasses were as good as new! I have been needing to get new glasses for awhile; before I got around to it my wife's glasses broke and that took priority. Thanks to the experience she had at River City Eye Care, I will be choosing another optical shop when I do. These are her words: "I made an appointment for an eye exam at the Hollywood location of River City Eye Care based on the strength of their Yelp reviews. The office staff were professional and helpful on the phone, despite a colossal outage of service by Comcast that affected their incoming calls (and much of Portland). The doctor was courteous and friendly, though she repeatedly tried to upsell me to expensive progressive lenses even after I mentioned that I am happy with single-vision lenses for everything except reading and close work, and for those I am more comfortable with my specs off anyway. I am very nearsighted but thankfully have perfect close-up vision - why would I want to block off the majority of the real estate of my essential distance-vision correction with a field that gives me the same effect as just taking off my glasses? Even on oversized lenses this would be silly, but I prefer frames that are too small to leave more than a narrow margin of useful magnification around such a blob of pointless expense. "But no big deal. I am quite capable of resisting sales pressure, though it would have been nice for the doctor to take the first or second polite refusal instead of trying the upsell again a third time once the exam was done. "What took my breath away was that when I went back to reception afterward, I was presented with a statement for the expected cost. I had browsed their selection ahead of time and chosen one of the cheapest frames they had ($185 on sale), but the bill would total $535 - on top of $95 for the exam! They had added $140 for "better" plastic lenses (a $20-$50 surcharge for most online suppliers and retailers) and $130 for an anti-reflective coating that comes gratis from many outlets. I truly do not know what the other $80 was supposed to be for, because when I said that I would need time to come up with $630, the receptionist snatched the sheet back and gave me one of the classic hard-sell lines: 'the sale ends tomorrow.' "I was not expecting to have to magic up over half a grand after working hours on a Friday for an exam and a pair of single-vision, untinted, stock-frame glasses. $630 is double what my last pair of glasses cost. Those came from a very well-respected optician in Santa Barbara, and nothing is cheap in Santa Barbara. "I paid cash for the appointment and asked for a copy of my prescription, thinking that I could at least order a cheap pair online to sub for my broken ones until I saved the money for a pair fitted by an optician. When I got home and looked at it, I saw that it included no cylinder or axis information about my left eye! This is essential to correct for astigmatism; though the numbers for the right eye are there, they have been very different on either side for many years, so copying the numbers across would result in unusable glasses. On reviewing my previous prescriptions, I also found that it was a radically stronger distance-vision prescription for my left eye than my last one, though my focal distance has been lengthening in the typical middle-aged way. This led me to suspect that even the little information they supplied me is wrong. "I emailed requesting full printout, but their reply only included the same sheet with the same information still missing. When I politely replied that I still did not have the prescription I had paid for, they didn't reply for two days - and then claimed that there was no correction necessary. "Hooray! Half of my astigmatism had magically disappeared! I thought of writing the experience up for scientific publication or learning to use hairspray and parlaying my miracle into a teevee evangelist empire, but decided to shell out for a rush-appointment exam at another optometrist instead. "On top of the $95 I could ill afford to waste (some optical shops charge $80 or even less on promotion), this also delayed the replacement of my delicately glued-up glasses for at least another week. The second optician - with whom I did not discuss my visit to River City or share any previous prescriptions - diagnosed my vision in line with the prescriptions of previous doctors, including astigmatism in both eyes. "Had I wasted $630 - or far more had I bitten the "progressive" bait - I would have received completely unusable glasses. I appreciate that a good optician will keep adjusting until the glasses are right, and am willing to pay a reasonable premium for the service: I would have paid the $630 had I had it on the spot just to have the matter dealt with. I also would have returned for a fitted pair once I had the cash even if I had had to buy a stopgap pair online - if they had proven reputable and competent. read more

I LOVE MY NEW GLASSES AND I LOVE THIS PLACE! I am an extremely difficult fit and seriously picky about style. Here is how I ended up loving River City Eyecare. I had recently bought a new pair of glasses from another place (ends in "crafters") that just didn't fit and were uncomfortable no matter how they were adjusted. Since I was passing by and my new glasses were driving me crazy, I walked into River City Eyecare and asked if they minded trying to adjust them for me. Leslie was fabulous. She was careful and very sweet about adjusting glasses purchased elsewhere. She did her best to adjust them and patiently explained to me how my next pair could be better suited for me and not present the difficulties these did. And guess what, I took the new pair back to "crafters", and came back to River City to buy a pair that fit me and looked great. Leslie was once again amazing! We found THE PERFECT GLASSES and now I've been wearing them for more than a week. My vision is better than ever and I have gotten so many compliments on my new glasses--that's never happened before. River City has a really diverse selection of super-stylish and super-high quality frames from quirky to conservative and everything in-between. They obviously choose carefully. I have never had an eye doctor I liked. They are always get in, get out, on to the next. I have never had that experience with River City Eyecare. They are always extremely helpful to fit an appointment into my schedule, very courteous throughout the whole process, and very accommodating when it comes to issues with insurance and everything else. Dr. Breeden even goes very very far out of her way to explain exactly what everything is and how it works and why which I always have appreciated a lot. The staff knew exactly what to do and how to handle it so all I had to do was sit back and get my contacts and glasses I wanted and they took care of the rest.
