We ordered a Hendrix spritz & skyline ember to start off and paired it with oysters, blue crab hushpuppies, lamb chops, the New York strip & finished it off with a cream cheese tarte. The open rooftop is probably my favorite thing about Hendrix. The heritage pork was very mediocre and I probably wouldn't get it again but I would say that the restaurant's atmosphere makes up for it. The service was nothing special. This restaurant is more of a gathering place to get drinks than it is a good restaurant. I do wish the building was more handicap accessible with the amount of stairs you need to climb. read more

This review is hot off the press. I literally just left a couple of hours ago and wanted to review while everything was still fresh in my mind. Made a reservation early in the week for 8pm. I arrived at 750. I was told that tables were sitting a little late so it would be a wait of 20-30 minutes. Well that wouldn't be a problem if there was somewhere to wait. I was told I could go to the rooftop (40 degrees) or wait under the stairs (no room and a fall hazard). I asked if we could wait by the bar but was told there was a private party and we couldn't. My husband and I went to a neighboring bar and returned 15 minutes later where we then waited by bar, eventually being seated at 825. Ambiance is nice. It's cozy, good for date night. Server was amazing. She was a natural. Top tier, like she studied to be a server lol. I hate I can't remember her name. Five stars for her. Food. It was a 3/5. Go for the mussels! They are delicious. Hush puppies are pretty tasty. Main options we got were the ribeye and the quail. They both left something to be desired. It was good but it wasn't great. I didn't want to lick my plate. Something was needed and missing in both dishes. The portions are fine. I won't return to give them another chance. My advice to anyone coming for a nice date night, don't. I would stop by here, hit the bar, grab some mussels and go elsewhere for dinner. I'm disappointed because I was looking forward to trying this place. Came from NC to celebrate with some friends at this restaurant. The place itself is nice and our server was very pleasant as well. I had the crispy brussels sprouts as an appetizer and they were delicious. However, the scallop dish that I had for my entree was very underwhelming. Overall the whole dish was too soft in texture for my liking. Had the squad been cooked even 30 seconds less, it would have been less mushy. One of my friends stated that her burger was not great either and there was a mix up with another one of my friend's ribeye (wrong temp). On the other hand, my drinks were good. The Hendrix is well worth the steep stairway climb to the entrance! Once you transcend the stairs and catch your breath, you enter a beautifully decorated space that has high ceilings, fine artwork and hardwood floors. The rooftop bar is spacious and offers an excellent view of downtown. The inside bar is beautiful as well. Our server Aliyah was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. For appetizers we had the deviled eggs and the hush puppies. Both were delish. My husband had an old fashioned and the KY bourbon content was generous. For entrees I ordered the pork chop and it was life changing, thick, but sooo juicy and tender. My husband had the chicken and he loved it. We will definitely return to the Hendrix. One observation is regarding the limitations for individuals with disabilities. Apparently there is an elevator, but it didn't seem easily accessible. read more

In town on business and decided to check this place out. Started out for happy hour with our clients at the rooftop bar. Very nice up there, very nice vibe the seating areas were very comfortable, and the bartenders were very attentive and quick with getting out our drinks. I tried the Hometown Honey and it was very good! Well balanced drink and not overpowering. The dining room for dinner was also very relaxing and welcoming. Our table shared an appetizer and we had the blue crab hushpuppies. They were very good, not crumbly and the aioli was delicious. For dinner I had the steamed PEI mussels. Do not think that because it's under shared/small plates that it's a small serving. It is enough for a meal! The crispy bread was perfect to dip in the juices of the dish. And they were cooked perfectly, very tender, the flavors were amazing and not hard or rubbery. I was deciding on this or the braised short rib and I was not disappointed! Two people at our table ordered it and also said it was amazing and we all ate everything on our plates so that is a good sign! This is a hidden gem in the Vista area of Columbia SC. The stairs at the entrance was bit much but well worth the climb. We took elevator down when we left. We had a reservation and they seated us immediately. I loved the night time view. It was our anniversary and they gave me a glass of champagne. It was six of us. All the appetizers were delicious. My family especially liked the smoked salmon and deviled eggs. Entree hit was the ribeye steak and grits. I don't know the cost as my husband and I were treated to dinner. Just swung in for a quick cocktail and an app. Place is a little difficult to find...looks like a store front and you have to walk up a long staircase. I was really looking forward to trying Hendrix after seeing great reviews on Facebook. I travel here once a month for work and was excited to have a new spot to add to my routine. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. I sat at the bar and was completely ignored for several minutes. The bartender was making drinks for a couple, which I understood, but she didn't even acknowledge me. After finishing, she walked away. I was about to leave when she finally dropped off a menu without saying a word -- no greeting, no water, nothing. When she came back, she asked what I wanted to drink. I asked if she could make a flavored tea, and she said no, so I ordered water. I decided on the stuffed quail with dirty rice and greens. A gentleman sat to my right, and it was clear she knew him. She brought him water and started chatting. Soon two of his friends joined, and her full attention was on their group. She eventually brought my food -- which was actually really good -- but that was the last I heard from her until I asked for my check. My water glass stayed empty while she refilled theirs; I finally had to ask another waitress for a refill. The food was delicious, but the service made me feel unwelcome. Even the hostess didn't say goodbye when I left. I was so excited to try this place, but after how I was treated, I don't think I'll be back. $52 wasted -- because customer service means more to me than good food. I have been here in the past and thoroughly enjoyed my food. The vibe is always laid-back.  I went on a Saturday evening, and the service was great. We had reservations, which we made on the website. The hostesses were pleasant. Our server was personable as well. We ordered the NY after midnight cocktail, somewhere between a manhattan and old fashioned. It was good to me. We also had the cocktail; I can't remember the name, but it had Grey Goose, Prosecco, and rose water. It was delicious. It was also refreshing. In addition, we had two lemon drops. They were pretty tasty as well. All of the cocktails had an alcohol presence but were balanced very well.  The food was enjoyable. We started with the blue crab hush puppies. They were okay. They had a strong crab flavor but needed something else to elevate the flavor. The Shimeji mushroom burger was delicious. I loved the flavor, the cheese, and the black garlic mornay sauce. My husband ordered the ribeye main, and I ordered the Ny Strip. I switched my Brussels sprouts with the appetizer Brussels sprouts. I enjoyed my steak, the grits, and the Brussels sprouts. It was all so flavorful, and they complimented each other well. I did taste my husband's ribeye with the pepper sauce and the roasted cauliflower and broccoli. It was so good to me. I was surprised. Went to Hendrix about a week ago for a birthday party! I was honestly amazed that they were able to seat our reservation for 21. I feel like there aren't many nice restaurants that are able to accommodate a group that size. I ended up getting the deviled eggs as an app and then the NY Strip over grits and brussel sprouts as my main. Absolutely worth every penny. Everyone I went with loved their food as well so there were no complaints. Service was also great. For it being a nicer restaurant I would alot 2 hours if you're getting the full dinner experience. I was in Columbia visiting family. I wanted a nice spot to decompress on Friday. I was already in the area, so decided to checkout Hendrix rooftop. The restaurant itself was beautiful. The rooftop required some imagination. Yes, you're on the roof, but that's all. It was nothing spectacular. My husband and I ordered a couple of quick bites, a small plate, and cocktails, which included the blue crab hush puppies, fried Bradford okra, and the hotdog. The hush puppies and the okra were horrible. The hush puppies lacked in flavor and didn't contain and crab. The okra was fried way too hard. The hotdog, was surprisingly tasty which came as a surprise since the other items were so bad. Overall, for me Hendrix was a huge flop. Brussel sprouts were great, the salad (vegetarian friendly) was unimpressive, meatballs were great and filling! The bruschetta was a bomb of flavor (in a good way)! Drinks were good. My wife and I went yesterday to celebrate our birthdays. I had heard about this place and was excited to check it out. We were greatly disappointed in the very small portions of food we received especially considering the enormous price! We paid $16 for 4 pieces of shrimp with a piece of bread cut in half; $35 for 3 pieces of scallop and $59 for a very small piece of NY Strip, that was overcooked with about 3 tablespoons worth of mashed potatoes garnished with 3 Brussels sprouts. After paying over $100 for these ridiculous portions, we went to McDonald's. With the prices charged, you would think they would upgrade from the paper menus. Such a let down and will not be back! As an fyi.....We have visited various restaurants in the area and so far the best one is definitely California Dreaming. This gem is beautiful! You wouldn't be able to tell it from the street, but this holds a gem. You go upstairs from Main Street to the restaurant and then up another flight of stairs to the rooftop bar. I made a reservation for 3 and one person dropped so I emailed to make sure that this was handled properly and the FOH manager emailed me back and took great care of me. I saw him when I arrived and he was just as pleasant in person. Now to the food and drinks. The hometown honey was delicious! My friend and I ordered two. Hendrix is a true gem in the downtown area. The ambience of the restaurant is wonderful. The service is excellent and then you have the amazing food and drinks. We ordered two appetizers. The Crispy Brussel sprouts, absolutely delicious, sweet and tangy very crispy and nutty and some of the best we've ever tried. We also tried the Blue crab hush puppies fantastic. The entrée we tried was spicy lamb, which was sensational. I'm not a lamb lover, this is my husband's favorite protein but it was perfectly seasoned, and perfectly cooked. I'll definitely have this again. We also had the mushroom burger. The mushrooms were so succulent very well seasoned the meat was sensational, fantastic burger definitely a go to. For drinks I had the Gin and Tonic with Hendrix gin, refreshing and smooth! This is now one of our favorite places. read more

So I've tried to get in here about three times, and no fault of anyone's but my own, my schedule was always wrong. However I finally got in here to try it! With a welcoming atmosphere and modern industrial design, the ambiance and aesthetic are very pleasing. They hold a main dining area and bar for dinner service, and then an upstairs rooftop bar for cocktails and small plates. I went with a few friends and they always rave about the food. We started off with the beef tartare. Delicious, warm, and the bread was the perfect pairing for the appetizer. Best tartare in town if I'm honest. After that I got the grass fed NY strip steak, with flash fried Brussels and stone ground grits, topped with a chimichurri sauce that melted into the meat for flavor. Hendrix was totally opposite, based on the reviews I expected a great meal and it was terrible. My husband ordered the steak and it was tough, I ordered the salmon salad, the salmon was dry, the salad horrible, they paired ingredients that didn't pair well and it was very bitter. Hendrix was highly recommended to us and glad we went! The place is gorgeous with ample seating. It is on second floor of building with lots of stairs which can be an issue for those with physical limitations. The rooftop isn't as big as the main floor but it had plenty of seating with a covered bar. The bartenders were very skilled and friendly. They were making speciality drinks the whole time. First time here. As you walk in you will need to go up a flight of stairs...this is the main area. There is a nice bar with an open industrial look. There are various pieces of art on the wall which are interesting and eclectic. We sat at the bar and had simple drinks.. they definitely we're not watered down. The staff was attentive and made good suggestions. So we had some simple plates to share and we started with the tuna tataki and the crab salad sandwich. The tuna tataki was absolutely fantastic with a super fresh taste along with a avocado hummus and some pickled cucumbers with a little peppery kick. The crab salad sandwich reminded me of a lobster roll from New England....while the crab was fresh, it had a little too much mayo for me... And interestingly it came with a strip of bacon. And for our final shareable plate we went with the burrata and pear dish. Now typically I would probably get this to start with however, simply by accident , we finished with this. In my opinion this cleansed the palate and was quite tasty to finish the eating portion of our meal. Also I'm not typically crazy about burrata cheese s but this was paired quite well with pears and honey-nut- mix. We then decided to check out the rooftop which is very nice and surprisingly not too crowded... Although I'm sure this has potential for being very busy on other nights. And finally there is an elevator if necessary to get from the rooftop downstairs to the street level. It will definitely be worth another trip. read more
