A lot of people around me were devouring french fries, which I guess is a good sign if you like fries. The problem however was how the staff talked to/and treated the customers. I haven't seen a bartender so pretentious in quite a while. She seemed to almost have a disdain for the customers, whether they be young or old. Everyone seemed to be dealt with in the same manner. So it's a shame that the warmth of the place, is not reflected in the staff's disposition. So if I'm looking to just have some drinks, I'd rather spend my time at Floyds, or Roebling Inn. read more

Great drinks, great atmosphere, tiny menu, CASH ONLY. More detail: Henry Public is a Brooklyn gastropub that invites comparisons to some of Manhattan's better drinking establishments. The glassware is identical, the pricing a bit reduced: $10 or $11 for specialty cocktails; about $9 for wine (a limited selection); $6 for draught beer (a small but solid selection). The burger starts at $13. Usually I am loathe to order a plain martini out at a place like this; they're so easy to make at home, what could justify the markup? The Henry's martini, made with two vermouths and a lemon twist, is the answer. The Brooklyn Ferry combines rye, maraschino liquor, absinthe, and a fired orange rind to fabulous effect. The specialty cocktail menu lists a dozen concoctions: two with egg white, two with champagne, one with rum, one with applejack. But the emphasis is clearly gin, whiskey, bourbon. The alcohol on hand is a short but well-chosen list of bottles: good depth in gin in particular. (Good vodka behind the bar, despite its absence in the cocktail list.) The food menu left me confused. Very small. A burger, turkey sandwich, grilled cheese. Very few sides. Two desserts. The side room makes me think they want to be a restaurant, but with a menu this pared down I would have a very hard time coming for dinner on any regular basis. For what it's worth, my burger was okay. The fries -- good, but not great -- were overwhelmed by the Heinz ketchup. The 'Wilkinsons' dessert is perfect for 2 or 3 people: a collection of 6 doughy, slightly sweet French toast balls with a side of caramel rum sauce. Would some small touches (homemade ketchup, or an aioli or two) help? Absolutely. The atmosphere, drinks, and service are 4-stars, easily. But with no real appetizers and a tiny selection of entrees, I can't imagine bringing friends here for anything other than drinks. And that's too bad. I want this place -- so close to my apartment -- to be *that place* -- my default comfort bar to spend a good hour or two with friends. This is probably my favorite spot in this neighborhood. A simple menu where everything on there is delicious. The staff has been around for years so you see familiar faces when you arrive - the decor and lighting is really nice and chill - I love the burger, the fries, the deviled eggs - I haven't indulged in it but I hear great things about the turkey sandwich and the steak + eggs. Hipster-ass hipster food for hipsters. If you're a hipster, you'll love this place. I'm sure I'm too unironic and mainstream to understand the appeal of this place. As I sat down in the faux-old decor of the place and got my overpriced menu, I thought I might be in for a "treat". But my friend highly recommended the place, so I stuck around. By the time my 8oz Coca-Cola arrived -- complete in the old style bottle -- I knew I was right. It didn't get much better from there. I can appreciate a rare steak, and if the quality of the beef is high enough, I've even been known to tolerate a medium well burger. But a blue cheese burger shouldn't come out "blue" -- meaning completely cold in the center and the outside just seared enough to let you know it had seen a grill. I guess this is the ironic thing I just don't get. Either way, I really couldn't eat a two inch thick burger that was essentially a lump of raw ground meat. Fortunately, it was replaced with a proper medium burger, though this took quite a while to actually happen. However, the service was very good, and the fries were done just right. Hit or miss. After the experience I had yesterday, I seriously considered giving this place one star. But two weeks prior, the experience was fantastic. I guess it depends on the staff. My husband and I walked in yesterday around 4:00pm and were completely ignored by the two mousy waitresses who wouldn't acknowledge us despite trying to get their attention multiple times. They just walked past us, around us, behind us - It's a small place, so being ignored is equivalent to being dismissed. Finally, we asked the bartender if we could get a table. He tried to help but it was clear that seating was out of his hands. Again, the waitresses wouldn't make eye contact. A table was cleared, and yet again no acknowledgement from the mute waitresses. I eventually asked one "Can we sit down and order some food and drinks?" and got a response at last (though not a gracious one) "No, that's for larger parties." Odd, because two weeks earlier we sat at that exact table as a party of 2 and received exceptional service. Needless to say, we left without ordering and won't be back. Once again, I am so lucky to live where I do. Henry Public. Your cocktails are excellent and old-school and the snacks you serve at the bar are great. The back dining room, apart from being horribly lit (Can I come over and help tweak the lighting?) has most of the seating and is where we find ourselves fairly often. Here's a good meal for two people: Oysters. Cheeseburger. Turkey sandwich. Or switch out the oysters for the bone marrow if you are feeling meaty. Or, have oysters and bone marrow. Why not? Henry Public is one of those places that you want to like, it looks cool and cozy, so as the level of annoyance increases as the meal goes on you think to yourself, why? Why did you have to mess it up so badly? Why? It's not so difficult. Its a pub. Its a pub with some food, pub food. Run down: 1) Slider served on large bun, is still a slider on a bun, not a burger. And for $15? 1.5) Fries. Frozen fried in old oil 2) Annoyngly Cash Only 3) Menu is so small its a joke. I've said this before about places pretending to be Gastropubs. It assumes a level of gastro(nomy) over and above having 4 types of burgers (no cheese, cheese, bacon, cheese and bacon - seriously, earthshattering!) and a turkey sandwich. 4) Expensive 5)Painful service. I REALLY like it here, but I want to love it... and I don't. It's a perfect Sunday bar- comfortable, low key, and homey. Not a huge selection of beer, but always excellent choices on tap. The toasted almonds are to die for, too. But, the service is always stupid slow, like, an uncalled for kind of slow. As if they're just not paying attention to you. Last time they forgot to add the drinks we had at the bar to our table tab, and, being the good (dumb?) samaritan that I am, I did everything in my power to find a way to pay for them. It took 20 minutes, and I was basically laughed at. I guess that last part was deserved, though. Plus, cash only. Gross. Came for brunch with friends. No wait at all. Was seated promptly on a Sunday afternoon. I had the Egg, cheese and bacon sandwich. Nothing amazing about it but the shoestring fries were pretty good. I'm a huge fan of Henry Public! We live in the hood and it's an easy jaunt over to Henry and Atlantic ... and we make it often. Soooo ...pro's about this place : Specialty drinks are superb and the bartenders and bar backs very friendly. I usually start with a specialty drink (Beechers Tonic is my FAV!) which gets a good buzz started and then switch to a beer; though the beer selection is slight, it is still very good The oysters and the accompanying relish are so delicious! I love a place where I can always depend on good oysters and Henry Public is one of those places. Late night I have gone and they've been out, but that's to be expected when eating at midnight and going for something like oysters at a place that doesn't specialize .....BUT ..... The all time winner ... which has been referenced time and time again, is the turkey leg sandwich. I was picturing one of those giant things you get at the state fair and wondering how it could be so good??? Not at ALL ... this is like the best pulled pork sandwich you've ever had, but creamier and more home style ... the fried onions on top are such a treat and the side of pickles ... RIDIC!!! It's a must have and one of the best things I've ever eaten in terms of comfort food .... A couple cons which keep it from being five stars in my book: Cash ONLY! I should be use to this by now (living in Brooklyn) yet, every time I go, I end up throwing down my credit card like it's my first time there and then having to run to nearest the ATM (there should at least be one in the establishment). A little crowded ... I really like the ambiance of the front bar and in the back I kinda feel like I'm sitting in a Cracker Barrel ... yet it's HARD to get a seat in the front between 7pm and midnight on a Friday or Saturday. I guess that's good for them, but has honestly been a deterrent at times for me. And lastly ... when going there for my first brunch, the back room was FULL of babies and toddlers. I was lucky enough to grab a booth in the bar and enjoy. Good for parents ... but I'm not yet one, and I even saw a couple go back to be seated and then walk out because of it ... Two and a half stars for me. The extra half is for the nice atmosphere and feel but that is about it. It is basically just yet another copy of the dozen other Frankies wannabes that have flooded this area over the past couple of years. It has potential but unfortunately that is being held back by non-existant service and half complete dishes. Who the hell serves a burger with no option for any tomato, lettuce, onion or even mustard? It is just a tiny dry lonely patty with two supermarket pickles on the side. Yes, you can have cheese, but only if it is cheddar...my tastebuds were yawning the whole time. For $14 it is highway robbery as essentially all you are getting a bland 4oz slider. As for service, it was non-existant. Our party had to seat ourselves and just saw the waitress twice....once to take our order and once to give us our bill (mind you, there was only two other tables than ours and multiple waiters working). Someone else brought our beers (they get points for carrying Sixpoint but lost them for charing $3 for a 6oz soda). Our water glasses sat empty before the food even came and no one made any attempt to refill. I am sure as a bar it will do fine, but it is nothing special and I won't be making the effort to go back when I can hit 5 other earlier copies that have great service and food (at far, far better prices). I discovered Henry Public thanks to the cooking channel. No lie. As soon as I watched the segment on them, I emailed a pal and she was down. So worth it. I realize that this pub is getting and has been getting a lot of hype which can explain the level of expectations by some, but honestly, it's like walking into Stumptown and saying I want my Starbucks. Go somewhere else. Speaking of Stumptown, If you're looking for the sit down, pub counterpart to Stumptown (at the Ace Hotel), you've found her. I love the randomness of the location. It's not on Smith or even Atlantic, it's almost tucked away, which helps with the quaint, old time feel of the restaurant. I felt like I was transported to the Prairie West when people lived in small wooden homes, men rode horses and outlaws ran the show. I thought the food was spot on. The burger, while yes a bit smaller than normal, had a great taste to it and the bun was just perfect. It was super toasted, my burger was done medium and with the cheese and bacon strip and some ketchup and pickles it was exactly what I needed! My friend on the other hand, ordered the turkey leg sandwich and it was HUGE and so tasty. Jesus. So freaking good. The difference is that I walked out content, my friend walked out stuffed. The fries that came with the burger were the shit. Or as I told my friend, like crack. Finally, we shared a place of their wilkinsons, which were f'ing delicious. I mean, pancake balls with rum caramel sauce and moist on the inside. DELICIOUS! Also, they were perfectly golden all around. I could eat these for breakfast. As a matter of fact, if I ever get married, I might have to order them instead of cake. Hands down this dessert is one of my favorites. Now, because I'm a gal, I ordered the Two-Cents Fancy, to drink which is pear, tarragon honey and champagne. So good. So well presented (small dainty old school champagne glass). So perfect for a beautiful between Spring/Summer day. I highly recommend it. Things of note: -Go early. At around 8, it starts to pick up and get a bit loud. -Bring cash. It is cash only. -The drinks menu has the prices listed below the two sets of drinks--if you don't pay attention you'll miss the 10 and 11 dollar price tags. -It is small inside, but totally cute. Preface: I would have given this place 4.5 if that were an option (see last paragraph). So I've been to Henry Public a handful of times and, as of now, just returned from my most recent visit so consider this review hot off the presses. I opted for a seat at the bar as I was by myself and just looking to have a nice dinner after a long day and was quickly taken care of by the attentive bartender (I didn't catch her name). The menu is not very extensive and every time I've gone there I've ordered the same entree, the turkey leg sandwich. The other entree options on the menu are burgers, mac and cheese, steak, marrow bones, or salads in addition to a selection of vegetables/small sides. All of which I feel you can get easily at other establishments and once you've had this turkey sandwich, you'll likely agree that there is no reason to be adventurous with the entree selection. The turkey meat is exceptionally juicy and the thick cut bread, with a nice slight char from the grill, absorbs all the run off juices before it turns into a sloppy mess. This is such a hearty sandwich that you'll easily forget about the mound of fries on the other side of the plate. But you don't just come here for the food...this is a cocktail bar afterall. I was quite pleased with the Kings County Sour and the Brooklyn Ferry, both of which are rye based drinks. The Kings County was a refreshing/semi sweet drink with egg whites, lemon, and port float while the Brooklyn Ferry hits like a heavyweight with the rye, vermouth, maraschino liqueur and absinthe. Normally, I'm not a fan of absinthe because the liquorice flavor it usually imparts but the bartender assured me that it was a well balanced blend and not overpowering. I went with her recommendation and am certainly all the better for it. Lastly, the ambiance of the place is regular Brooklyn-chic (read: suspenders, facial hair, and nothing (except for the ipod) made in the last 70 years adorning the walls). It is overall a pretty classy place given that is just a stones throw away from the hustle and bustle of Atlantic Ave. It does seem to fill up pretty quickly and I wouldn't recommend bringing a large group here. Also note that it is a cash only establishment with the nearest ATM being across the street so plan ahead. So what stopped the 5-star review? The prices could stand to be reduced a little bit. You feel as though you're in Little Branch or Dutch Kills when you are cashing out. I would like to try a little more of the small plates before I can pass full judgement on the food options. This place is definitely a throwback, the speakeasy type of pub that we all talk too much about thereby inadvertently creating the crowds that flock to these places. The atmosphere inside is great, a set of booths across from the bar and then a fair amount of tables in the back area. The bar is part of the throwback all the way down to the old style cash register. I showed up here to get an after-dinner drink at about 10 pm on a Wednesday night and the place was pretty crowded. The crowd was quiet for the amount of people in there, all engaged in their own conversations with friends, not a bar scene at all in the traditional sense. We sat in a open booth, but realized soon that the booths were just for those eating. The hostess was totally nice about it, but assured us that they needed the booths and tables for food. Still full from dinner, we could not come up with an immediate excuse to add food to the drink endeavor so we jammed in at the fairly crowded bar. The bar area thinned out quickly, but the place stayed busy all the way until close to midnight when we left. Staring at their specialty drink menu, nothing jumped out, so the bartender mixed us up a concoction with gin, mint and ginger and it turned out well when poured atop freshly shaved ice. I looked over the menu and it is short and to the point. Burgers, turkey leg sandwich and some appetizer/treats. It seems to be a great place to get some higher end creative bar food and great drinks. I saw the turkey leg sandwich and almost fell off of my seat. It was like a Flintstones sandwich and looked phenomenal so it gave me a good idea of what kind of food they churn out here. With five beers on tap, I had a Captain Lawrence Pale Ale before the night was out. The two drinks and the beer added up to $24 which, by speakeasy standards, was a good deal. Totally going to disagree with Andrew T. about this one. Tider, whatcha talkin' about ?? I keep coming back here for the imaginative drinks, the waiters' suspenders, and the old fashioned cash register. Last Friday my bf and I decided to try the food here, and my burger craving was more than satisfied. I had mine cooked medium-well-ish and it came out of the kitchen perfectly. Grilled on the outside, juicy, tender, and still a tad pinkish on the inside. The meat was top notch quality. The drinks were fantastic (if you like ginger do try the Wide Awake cocktail), and the fries were salty, crunchy and addicting. My gluttonous self could not finish the meal, so I asked to pack up the fries and brought them over to Floyd's Bar to finish over cheap beer and Bocce. All in all - a great evening. Really cool gastropub in Brooklyn Heights. I was lucky to have a friend who lives in the area who is in the know, otherwise I don't think I would've ever found this place. The drinks are solid. Strong, creative, and flavorful. Also the bartenders will make you whatever you like if you ask nicely. This place is known for their burgers. I can testify that the burger here is superb The patties are homemade and hand formed to maximize thickness and juicyness. The chefs actually cook the meat to order too (what a novel concept for a gastro pub) if you say medium rare, you'll get just that. For someone with a big appetite, the turkey leg sandwich is a splendid choice. Somehow the chefs figured out how to stuff about a pound of pulled turkey meat between two pieces of bread without it falling apart. It's quite an art and it's very filling. All the items that I tried that night were good. This pub has above average food for a pub and I'd recommend it to anyone who happens to be in the Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill area. read more

Very casual and great place to hang out with bunch of friends. 4 of us enjoyed their dark mood, special beers on their menu. We shared oyster - it was fresh. We had hamburger and lamb special. This place is absurdly trendy in the late-1800s sort of way that is penetrating all of New York these days. However, don't let that detract from Henry Public. Underneath there's a great bar lurking with some pretty delicious food to boot. They serve awesome cocktails (Kings Country Sour and Sweet Liberty Smash were my personal favorites of the evening) and the bartenders are really cool. My biggest beef with the place is that it is a bit pricey for cash-only establishment. As far as the food goes, the turkey leg sandwich is amazing. It's also huge, so don't go overboard with other things. The pickles were a bit boring but the deviled eggs were good (yet still not worth the money in my mind) . Had a side of brussel sprouts as well, but I found them to be a bit overcooked. The french fries are boring (particularly for being pretentiously billed on the menu as "french-fried potatoes"). Wilkersons are awesome (fried dough always is, though), but I was not so much a fan of the rum sauce. All in all, Henry Public is a great spot. It's got some minor drawbacks (and granted, we were there on a night when it was not packed) but it's definitely worth a trip to check it out. read more

The whole 20s/30s revival theme is WAY overdone in this particular corner of Brooklyn. That affect here stood out here more than at other places, probably because it's so new and (having moved to Brooklyn this spring) I *know* its new whereas at other establishments I can suspend my disbelief and pretend the place *really has been* open for 80 years. Also, although it's wonderful when a restaurant focuses on what it does well, they take things somewhat to extremes here and the menu could stand to be a bit more expansive. But this is not meant to be a negative review: Henry Public is warm and inviting and they cook a **very** good burger and get the important things right. And bonus points for being on Henry Street rather than Smith or Court -- between this and the nearby (and excellent) Hibino, this is turning into a nice little Restaurant Row. read more

I loved this place before I ever ate here- do you ever have the experience? I'm often like this with an expensive purse or sweater I like. I eye it for six months, imagine myself walking around with the purse and how cool I will look. Then I finally save up enough money to buy the item and it isn't quite how I imagine. The color is a bit off, its smaller than I thought, the snap doesn't work in a logical way. But I use it constantly regardless, because I committed to the purse and I ogled it for so long. I will myself to love it. Henry Public is like that. I walk by there every day and it always looks so adorable and all the foodies say its the best turkey sandwich in town. And yeah, the food was good, but not particularly notable. The atmosphere is great, but pretty cramped 'cause everyone wants in on the goodness. A little gem of a gastropub. Romantically old fashioned, with very civilized and fun cocktails, we were there for the turkey leg sandwich that made the NY Mag top 101 sandwich list. With turkey leg meat, braised in milk and herbs, and I think there were some caramelized onions on pullman slices, the sandwich was as comforting as a mac and cheese pillow. Cheeseburger was also quite hefty and well cooked, accompanied by perfectly cooked french fried. Nice service, very cozy atmosphere. But what's with the cash only??? Oh Henry! read more

Fantastic drinks, very good food. I could do without the whole mustache-suspender shtick, but whatever. It is absolutely ABSURD that they don't take cards; nothing worse than breaking up your drinkin' and gossip party to stumble back out into the wretched heat and glaring sun to schlep three blocks to the nearest ATM. Henry Public is pretty much a life saver. Arrived around 2:30 am and the kitchen was still full service ... :O The ambiance is like a cross between a western saloon and speakeasy from the 1920's. It's really charming. Cocktails and service was above expectations and the food was delicious. Burgers and fries at night. And apparently the deviled eggs are good (but i know this doughnut ninja named Patrick who makes the best deviled eggs in the world, so these can only be second best at best) My inclination is to award a 5th star only because of the late night service, but I imagine even when vampires are asleep, this place would garner a 5th as well. They're drinks are really not that great. They're watered down. If you get something super boozy though, you should be fine. They're food, on the other hand, is off the hook. I first went here when I ate meat and got the Turkey Leg sandwich. The natural reaction to biting into that thing is," Oh baby you make turkey feel like butter in my mouth," or something along those ends. Now that I'm a vegetarian, I get the grilled cheese sandwich. It is by far the best grilled cheese sandwich I've ever had. It has a variety of cheeses, hard and not so hard, and it is impossible not to gobble down. Takes very unique despite that it mainly cheese cheese cheese. The variety of cheeses helps that. read more

Great place, for when I do not make it to the speakeasies. I have been going to Henry Public for about 3 months, I love the French fries, but I have yet to eat one of the dinners on my own. I have tried the turkey leg sandwich and it was delicious. I also tried the mac and cheese and, although it could use extra flavor (maybe some bacon or garlic) it was pretty tasty too. I like the crowd - it is a group of people who love old school bars and 20's/ 30's music. My only complaints are that they do not take credit cards and also the mixed drinks could be stronger, or, if they are weak, they could be less expensive. I have had drinks from two different bartenders and both times the drinks were too weak. read more

Overpriced ($15 burger). Which would be fine, other than the food itself does not match the cost... I ordered the turkey sandwich. It comes with two slices of bread each about 1.5 inches thick... just too much. Also, the meat itself was WAY over salted. Add to that a huge plate of fries that didn't taste fresh, and you got yourself a 2 star location. Service would go from ok, to ignored, back to ok. The decor is nice... feels like a living room. Finally, no credit cards. REALLY, no cards and you charge that much. Boo. read more
