Great food but your Black bartender racially profiles Black women! I'm a regular so I know when something out of the norm happens. I went in and I placed my order and I was hit with "you need to leave a card to start a tab or close it out" when I placed my order. I'm a regular and this has never happened before. While I was here Black men came in and they were asked "would you like to start a tab" and given the option. Later a white couple came in and was met with "do you want to start a tab". The white couple said no and no card was taken. There was clearly a bias and that bartender should be spoken to. I won't be back. Sistas, beware. One of our own is running the bar and is co*ning. PS. This spot was a bit out of the way for me, but I was quite excited to find a bar that had a kitchen stay open until 2am on a Friday night so made my way over. The spot is poppin' with people hanging with friends, coworkers, and dates. For drinks, they had a decent variety but nothing that really stood out to me. I settled for a classic Spicy Mezcal Margarita ($13). I found it kind of surprisingly that it didn't have a salt rim like I'm used to though. As for food, I wanted something light since it was so late. We ordered the Pepperocini Bites ($11) and large House Fries ($10). The pepperocini were interesting being stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped with bacon. Honestly, I didn't like this at all and the bacon was almost burnt, but I didn't want to waste so finished it. Fries were solid though as tough to go wrong with those. I wanted to like this bar so much more, but everything was just OK to me. This is a review for the guiness. It is poured in a 22oz glass, good texture, and served at a decent temperature. So this is a destination guiness for me. Most places these days pour a guiness in a 16oz pint glass, too cold, with a flat taste/texture. Burgers and fries are good as well and the music is good. read more

I absolutely love this neighborhood joint. The GG Burger was delicious. It comes with pickles, lettuce, house sauce, and you get a choice of cheeses: American, house blend, or goat cheese. We came in around 7pm and just missed their happy hour which ends at 7 on weekdays. There's also trivia here on Monday nights and I wish I made a reservation for that. The bar area was very loud even for a bar - it's a small space and the place was packed. The service here is extremely slow. It was quite busy tonight and even though we sat at the bar but it was still hard to get anyones attention to order our food and drinks. It took us about 10 minutes to find someone to take our order, 10 minutes to ask someone for utensils, and 20 minutes for someone to get us utensils. We tried to order a second drink for 20 minutes, waited another 15 minutes for our drink to come (which it never did), and then finally went to get our own check even though we were seated at the bar. The food here is not as good as I thought it would be based on previous reviews and the price. For a $15 chicken sandwich and $4 to add on a side, the sandwich was very underwhelming. The chicken was fried but very hard. I scratched the roof of my mouth eating it. The sauce was good but it didn't make up for the subpar chicken sandwich and subpar caesar salad. I honestly hate leaving low star reviews but this experience was honestly underwhelming. The food was great and well priced and they're one of the only spots in the area serving food AND drinks late on a weekday! Good food makes me really happy, and I was really happy after eating here. Really solid food and creative drinks. This is a family owned establishment , and you can tell they put their heart and soul into the food. I was annoying and I asked if I could get the hash browns from the brunch menu, and they said yes! The hashbrowns were very unique, they look like a Birdsnest ,deep-fried and so crispy and delicious; they were very well flavored. I also ended up getting the buffalo wings on the side and they were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Honestly these were some of the best buffalo wings I have had in New York City. We stopped in this past weekend as part of the Autumn Tippler tour. So much for the best for last, this was the best for first! It was our first stop of the night and it set an incredibly high standard for the rest of the venues. We redeemed our Purple Haze cocktail, which was Mezcal based. The smokiness of the liquor went very well with the blackberry syrup and soda. It went down super easily! To eat, we ordered some BBQ wings, grilled cheeses and hash browns. Everything tasted homemade and fresh. The grilled cheese with the tomato soup was a huge hit with my table. It was the ultimate comfort food on a cold and rainy Sunday. The owner was nice enough to make us Halloween shots the day after Halloween! Those were awesome! The service was as hospitable as it could possibly get. The owner told us that her son is the cook and her long time partner is the bartender. Fun spot with an AMAZING liquor selection. They have a giant chalkboard chock full of amazing whiskies and amaros. Their cocktail game is strong too! They have a limited menu, but some interesting fusion. I got the pernil buns (served on Asian bao). I wish they had more snacky items on the menu though (aside from $7 fries). We'd wanted to visit before COVID-19, but didn't manage to make it happen so we were please to see they were serving food at their backyard tables on a hot July Thursday afternoon. The Frozen Sangria was both pretty and tasty and their cornmeal battered fried pickle spears were also a highlight. We were even more impressed with the efforts they're making to keep everyone safe. The friendly staff were all in masks, customers were asked to wear masks when walking through the restaurant, the table was thoroughly sanitized before we were seated, sanitizer and bug spray was available to guests, and the menu was paper and intended to be used once and thrown away. When we came in we were invited (no pressure) to provide a phone number for their optional contact tracing list, which was appreciated. We'll be back to try more items from their menu. read more

Ended Friday night with a visit to Gowanus Gardens. A solid neighborhood bar that has a large drink list and more food than you may expect. The kind of spot that accumulates regulars and results in fun stories. Quality: Decided to grab one more drink before calling it a night and ended up at Gowanus Gardens. We ordered from their list of cocktails, but they have a full bar and a pretty decent beer list. I went with a Spicy Paloma, which had spicy mezcal, fresh grapefruit, agave, and grapefruit soda. It did not exactly hit the spiciness level I hoped for, I think adding some cayenne could help, but it was a pretty refreshing drink. We also ordered some food from the bar. First out were the Maple Bourbon Wings, which had nice flavor, but were remarkably small. Not sure if it is organic or local chicken, but they were basically single bites and not much meat. Next out was the GG Burger, which we got on a potato roll with house blend cheese. The bun gave it a bit of a sweetness, which I enjoyed, though it too was smaller than expected. It came with a pile of decent fries. Quantity: Drinks are tall and stiff. The food items were on the smaller side, but exactly what you need from bar food. Value: $12-$13 for Cocktails. $14 for the Wings. $18 for the GG Burger. Ambiance: Gowanus Gardens is something between a gastropub and a dive bar that sits along 4th Avenue in Gowanus. Since we had our dog with us we took a seat at the outdoor structure sitting in the road. The location makes it so sidewalk seating is not really possible, but two gentlemen who were drinking at the bar chose the bus bench seats in between the bar and the structure. The windows of the bar were wide open on this beautiful evening, and several folks were inside at tables near the front. The actual bar takes up most of the space inside and it was great seeing a few people sitting at it. They also appeared to have a back patio area, but I did not explore further. Crowd: A few folks inside, three groups outside, and a couple of guys drinking beers on the bus stop bench. An odd crowd, but one that is pretty representative for a bar straddling the line between Park Slope and Gowanus. Service: Organized chaos. During our visit I think we interacted with every single person working at the bar, and each seemed to pass the baton. Our food and drinks came out without issue, it was just unlike anything I had seen before. Parking: Limited street parking directly in front of the bar, but it can be found along the street. read more

On those days long ago when I used to commute to work, I would walk by Gowanus Gardens and think, "yeah, tonight's the night I'm trying this." But here I am, not commuting to work and trying Gowanus Gardens finally for the first time! We stopped in for brunch and were pleasantly surprised by their backyard patio setup. Ample heaters and appropriately spread out, can't ask for much more these days. I had the spam fried rice which was destined for criticism from my Filipino palate but it was actually really good! The chicken tinga buns were REALLY spicy, and didn't have cotija cheese which would've helped. They have a cute little backyard patio with socially distanced seating and good music. Definitely a nice vibe. I ordered the tippler drink The Purple Haze and the Pom Diggity. Both drinks were good ( the Purple Haze was my favorite of the two). The drinks were made well (they don't water down their drinks which is great). I also ordered the Fried Pickles as a snack. The fried pickles appeared to be coated in a corn meal batter and proved to be a little overwhelming towards the end. Still, not bad. Their food is fine, but their pricing is ridiculous, parties of 6 or mor they charge a 25% fee. 15-20% is pretty standard even at much nicer places. They give you a tiny container of a dipping sauce of your choice. And then charge you for extras, ketchup counts too. I've literally never been to a restaurant where they charge you for ketchups, extra specialty dips fine, but my order of a burger and order of fries only gave me 1 small container of free ketchup. Walk one avenue over to burgers and beer etc and pretty much get a bunch better quality burger for probably the same price if not cheaper. read more
