He got some chicken and pancake. He didn't like the presentation of his food but my bacon egg and cheese was good. Coffee tasted like Coffee but I tend to put milk and sugar so, technically, Coffee tasted like milk and sugar. The hostess was nice as she seated us and just as nice as she asked us to get up pretty quickly after our plates were removed and when we promptly paid the bill. I'd been to this diner over 20 years ago and came back since it's the only diner in the area. Firstly, it STUNK when we went to be seated -- almost like a bathroom cleaner or some old funky janitor's room! Then we saw the menu -- my fiance wanted a chicken parm sandwich but they couldn't even custom make that. The menu had very little to choose from. It's not terrible that they have the 1950s look and that classic diner feel, but the seats were uncomfortable and smelled also. We both had burgers. My finances burger was dry and small. I had the Montague Burger that was a little more juicy but the bacon they put on it was like leather straps laced with onions! The fries were just ok, kind of crumbly and the slice of pickle that came with it wasn't crunchy or freak -- it was wilted and tasteless. Sorely disappointed in the quality of air and food! I also heard the waitstaff talking, very nice servers and hostess, but most of them are NOT from NY and didn't grow up in Brooklyn when diners were the best places to grab a bite at midnight when you were coming home from the club. Having been to Montague Diner several times, I feel that the 3 stars is warranted. The breakfast dishes are solid - the latkes are a stand out! The space is great for small groups/families. The service is atrocious though - the waiters seem absolutely annoyed to be there and after taking your order just disappear. I love that when you walk in there's a place to hang your coat on the side. I immediately hung mine up and made my way to the party. I was a part of. We were contemplating getting alcohol alcoholic beverages so I got a mimosa. That mimosa... wow. We also added an orange juice because the ratio of champagne/prosecco to orange juice was not what I was expecting for a diner. But everything I deserved. The orange juice was so fresh and pulpy I loved it. I was having such a hard time deciding what to eat from the menu. I didn't know if I wanted breakfast or lunch or a mix or sides or everything. I eventually settled for the steak and eggs, which I've never ordered before had a diner because I'm a very big breakfast girl. You know- pancakes French toast, waffles, eggs, hot chocolate, the works. But I wanted to try something new because you know it's almost 2026 and why not?! I ordered a cappuccino and got my meal along with my mimosa and I've never been happier. I even bumped into a friend. So unexpected! And at the table behind us was a lady from Law and Order! Typical diner food. The breakfast plates are an ok deal - I got the cheese omelette with added mushroom, tomato, spinach, and onions. It came with a small salad (spinach and arugula with some dressing) and a slice of toast. It's a decent portion for the base price of $17, but each vegetable addition is $1 *each* (this isn't clear from the menu). I also tried the pancake split, which sounds a bit more exciting than it is - basically just a pancake with ice cream on top. It's a fun idea. Sat at a booth and enjoyed the eggs plate (eggs over medium with bacon - which was perfectly chewy and crispy) & a waffle. We wandered in for brunch and were immediately seated at the counter and greeted by Peyton, who was incredibly attentive our whole visit despite the crowd. The restaurant itself is sort of an updated, retro diner vibe, spacious, not super cramped, with small booths along one side and countertop seating on the other. The menu is stocked with standard diner dishes, and the ones we got were delicious. I got two eggs over easy with turkey, bacon, home fries, and toast while my husband got the steak and eggs with chimichurri sauce. My food was all cooked and seasoned well (some actually over easy eggs for once!) while my husband's steak was cooked perfectly and very well seasoned too. This is a staple in the community as it's almost always at full capacity. We had to wait 30 min for weekday lunch! The interior is decorated like a classic diner. I had a coffee. Unclear if there is free coffee refill as I didn't ask, but it's not a typical out of NYC diner where the servers are walking around with a pot of coffee asking if you want a refill. I had the tuna salad sandwich with fries. I thought the sandwich was on the wetter side with more mayo than I would like. My partner got the Cobb Salad, which was a misnomer as it lacked the typical Cobb salad ingredients including avocado, chicken (you could add for an additional cost), red onions. Honestly 10/10. I don't totally get the complaints about it not being a diner. I mean it's NYC, but it's also a much better / higher quality so it's expensive for a typical diner. But to me it definitely still has diner vibes. And standard things like a bacon, egg and cheese is cheap at $9 so you can get a cheaper meal if you want. We waited 30 mins for 2 people on Sunday morning at 10am without a reservation. As we were eating and leaving, I heard the host saying two people would be closer to 45 mins without a reservation. As a heads up, we couldn't order the dinner menu at 10:30am which like may be assumed lol but my fiance wanted the giant grilled cheese so if you're going for that viral grilled cheese, can't get at breakfast. We split banana pancakes and the syrup was really good! I got the steak and eggs per another yelp review and honestly the steak was really fricken good!! Seasoned and marinated soooo well! I have to admit, I was totally reeled in by the influencer YouTube video I saw about this place--it looked like a hidden gem with great vibes. Unfortunately, the reality didn't quite match the hype. The food was pretty underwhelming. My sandwich and fries were bland, and I had to ask for ranch and mustard just to give them some flavor. Not exactly what I expected (for $60.00 - 2 sandwiches, 2 sodas) based on the glowing reviews. On top of that, there were fruit flies around our table and even in the bathroom--not exactly appetizing. The ketchup bottle on our table had a crusty, coagulated glob stuck to the cap that clearly hadn't been wiped off in a while. Service was lacking too. Our waitress came by once--to drop off the meal--and never checked back in. Meanwhile, the hostess spent most of the time on her cell phone instead of greeting guests or keeping the space tidy. Fantastic f**king cheeseburger. One of the best I've had in NYC since I've moved out here. I got the Montague Burger and I've been thinking about it for about a week now. The cook they got on my burger was quite impressive. Perfectly medium rare in the center with a perfectly seared crust on the outside. Cheese was perfectly melted, and the bacon was unreal. Fries were hot and crispy, but they are your standard battered fries. Still not bad at all, and I loved that they bundle the burgers with fries. For $22, it was a fantastic value. It's about the same price as the burger at Clark's down the road, but Montague has better hours and feels more like a trendy cocktail bar at night than a diner. I can't wait to try other menu items, but right now, I'm fixated on that burger. read more

To take over an old diner space and renovate to still try to evoke the spirit of an old diner space it was missing the grit and age that comes with time. Even at the bar there were chairs rather than the stools needed to really be more acurate. Unfortunately a lot of the actual old diners are closing and this may be the only types of option in the future, but creating a faux old-timey atmosphere and then charging more because it's new and requires a whole reservation system is not the way to go. I've tried to get in here a couple of times but it's been quite packed. The inside is so cute and very retro esque. The service is very nice and normal paced. I've been twice both around 9pm on Fridays. Definitely make a reservation which sounds crazy for a diner but necessary since they just opened. Ive had the grilled cheese (7/10), pickle dish(9/10), and fries(9/10). Everything is good and i definitely want to go back and try the pancakes. Makes complete sense because everything looks super cute and it's a beautiful day out, but I really wasn't expecting a 1-hour wait for this new spot at lunchtime (they barely opened!) and it had gone up to 2 hours by the time we finished our lunch. While the vibe gets 5 stars from me, the food/service still have a long way to go. We ordered the following: * Fresh squeezed OJ: Really small glass of minute-maid tasting OJ, we confirmed that it was freshly squeezed this morning but our waitress was kind enough to take it away/cancel it from our check * Bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich: Thick slab of bacon and cheddar on fluffy scrambled egg atop a soft roll! This was so-so, it needed seasoning and I splashed some Tabasco on it. Overall too soft for my taste... I was also surprised to hear that they were out of sausage when my bar neighbor tried to order it! * Crispy potatoes: Also on the underseasoned side! They were definitely browned on the outside but it's a stretch to call them crispy. The insides were nice and soft, with the outsides perfectly matching. I added salt/pepper and a lot of ketchup. * Hippie sandwich: This healthy vegetarian-friendly sandwich was crisp and refreshing! A wee bit on the small side, it definitely needs something besides the added pickle to fill you up. * Fries: My highlight of the meal! French fries with a rugged and golden-crisp exterior, perfect for holding on to all the ketchup you could ever want. It felt like (but I didn't time it so I could've been a wee bit hangry) a 15+ minute wait for our items, and eventually a bowl of potato chips was placed in front of each group sitting at the bar but this didn't help much since it appeared after our meal... there were some other items on the menu that caught my eye such as the Early Bird Special (eggs, bacon/sausage, toast, and a drink) for less than $15, as well as some dinner items such as the Steak Frites and Broccolini but I'll wait a couple months for them to work things out before heading back. read more

The old Happy Days diner had been closed for several years and we were eagerly awaiting a new food venue on the block. Montague Diner opened yesterday (March 18) and has been an instant favorite! Very nice retro feel, lighting and booths, with a beautiful (original?) tile floor. The staff is very upbeat, friendly and helpful, and the food is excellent diner fare. This is the true diner we've been waiting for in Brooklyn Heights! We had the American burger, cooked medium rare as requested, with excellent French fries, and a very good grilled cheese sandwich paired with an extraordinary tomato soup. We also enjoyed chocolate (with chocolate shavings throughout!) and vanilla milkshakes. We finished with the banana cream pie - a delight! Prices are very reasonable (our tab was under $65!). They also serve wine and beer but their selection right now is a bit limited. It's open daily from 6am-11pm, and we plan to return soon to try their dinner menu.
