I've been coming to Nakava Bar in Boca Raton for many years now and it is my go to place to hang out, especially when I want to get out of the house but not be around noisy rude people. It's been several years since I first started coming here. I've been drinking kava and kratom for almost 10 years now due to having problems with anxiety, depression and past abuse. I'm very serious about my kava and kratom. While there are many kava bars in the south Florida area, Nakava is the ONLY kava bar that is accepting of of all types of people and their personal differences. Many other kava bars in the south Florida area are run by immature kids who want to act like adult but are very discriminating towards people of race and sexuality. They are also very click which isn't my style at all. The current working staff is amazing I must say. Each time, they make me feel like a valued customer and make me feel like I'm part of a family more then just a loyal customer. The bar servers are always pleasant and go out of their way to help you. I like that they really seem to enjoy their job. I must make a note that Jenny B, is one that definitely goes well out of her way to make, not only me, but every costumer feel special and loved. Even while I was going through something personal in my life, she took time on her break to come talk to me on her own accord. One of the benefits to this place is that they have several types of kava and kratom available to choose from. Most kava bars only have 1-2 types while Nakava had a while menu full of different styles. The average price of a kava shell is between $5-12. They have daily specials, ladies night and live music on certain weekends. They also have many costumer appreciation nights for everyone and bring in food and treats often. I have been to many kava bars all over and this one is definitely my favorite by far, especially in the south Florida area. If you have a moment to please stop by! Went here for the first time and got two free drinks for the newcomers with my boyfriend. The Kratom was delicious , we tried the one that relaxes you and the one that gives you energy. First time trying kava and it tasted very earthy but it definitely does what it says it is supposed to do. 30 minutes later when I got home , I felt very relaxed and like I wanted to melt into my couch. Theres this new guy Mario - avoid him at all costs if you don't want to waste money. For the past 4 days I've gotten overcharged at least $30 and he argues with you about deals that the company advertises. Be cautious about what you're getting charged from him. i've been coming to nakava for about 3 months and i cannot ask for a better spot to chill out. definitely safe to say i can already call it my second home. never had a bad experience in there, i only had the best ones. i've met the nicest people in there and made a ton of great friends and memories. JENNY is the sweetest around and always has a smile on her face. she never fails to put one on mine! kava is a great atmosphere to do work, play pool, board games and just hang with friends and have a drink. haven't played pool since i was little, so once i saw the table at kava, i had to start again. bringing back memories and i love it. the kava&kratom at nakava is top tier; better than any other kava bar i've been to. im glad i have such a comforting place to go whenever i need it. thanks to all the staff, amazing people and wonderful environment, i've found my favorite place to be! read more

"THE LAST SHELL..." There's an old saying that is often ignored by even the most savvy businessperson ..."if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The magnificent fish tank: gone. The warm and fuzzy rustic "island-like" vibe: kaput. The majority of loyal customers: buh bye. The beloved owners who watched over Nakava like a child: ousted. The new Nakava is an attempt at a chichi bar that sells kava (bula!) and, more interestingly, openly sells kratom-infused drinks... uh oh. Kratom is arguably illegal to sell as a pre-made beverage due to its lack of FDA approval as a food additive and is also on the DEA drugs of concern list for 2015. Gaining speed and support, if HB 73 makes it through the Florida legislature and past the desk of Rick Scott, kratom will be illegal to even posses in Florida (a misdemeanor) and perhaps a devastating blow to this business and others. This is one of those businesses that almost needs a rustic, angry "tiki-god feel" and genuine coconut shells to feel authentic. Admittedly, I'm not a huge kava fan. The mud-like taste is tough to circumvent for many, and not everyone is a fan of the mouth-numbing effect, but the people and overall atmosphere of the old Nakava were kitschy and priceless. It was hard to leave without a smile on your face, meeting someone new, or twanging away on a beat up guitar in the back room. The new version seems more sterile than inviting, and doesn't make you feel like "taking a load off" as did it's former incarnation. The photos say it all... the smiling faces and tiki hut inside are photos from the old version. The new sterile version looks like it an empty bar on Washington Ave. Like a great BBQ grill with years of black caramelized flavor built in, sometimes it's best not to replace "old smokey" with the new Frigidaire stainless steel gas version. You'll miss something special. In Daytona Beach there is a legendary biker bar called Boot Hill. Yup, its dirty, skeezy and wildly popular. Having collapsed there on several occasions, I can attest to the fact that the ceiling is completely covered in bras and panties which have been stapled there over the past decades. I believe they even have a bra from Aileen Wuornos, the serial killer. If you so much as suggest cleaning the place up and taking down the undergarments, after they beat you senseless, your body will be dragged naked behind a 51 panhead up and down Orange Avenue. Some things, you just don't fu*k with. There have been rumors that "new" Nakava employees have attempted soliciting customers directly from inside other kava bars and giving out freebies hand over foot. Is that overly-aggressive marketing or desperation to rebuild a customer base? You decide. If it's true, one might predict that this kava bar, the first of its kind in North America, sadly, is down to its last shell. What in the "bula" were they thinking? read more

This is a really good place to get some Kratom or kava tea. Friendly and personable staff that have treated me well. It's a good late night place to go where you can just chill out and relax. Calming and soothing atmosphere that brings the best memories. Wish they had some cool string lights or relaxing lights for the evening (the bar lights are a bright white color). I'm a regular customer who brings in new people pretty often, and show them around. I've been going to this kava bar with absolutely no problem for 2 years. Today I was kicked out for not purchasing a drink, after purchasing a diet coke. I was kicked out for "loitering". Very disrespectful manager, with absolutely no understanding of hospitality. I was threatened with police action. I then asked one of the other bartenders if I usually buy drinks, and before he had the chance to answer, Jenny, the manager, told him to go back to the kitchen. I would consider this place easily by far the best kava bar I've been to. The atmosphere is very tranquil and everyone is welcoming. They also hold bi weekly dildo jousting events on Saturdays. This unorthodox event is what brought us to this place for the first time. It's not every day that fun, spontaneous events like those are held. The drive to the place wasn't that bad either. Although I'd recommend arriving early since the parking spaces fill up fast. As for their drinks, they have various flavored kava and there's almost always specials going on. My boyfriend ordered the Kratum instead of having the usual kava. This was the first time I've heard of Kratum and I could happily say that I preferred it to the kava. It tasted like a very unsweetened tea which was nice when comparing it to the dirt water flavor that kava has. However both drinks definitely relax you. They seem to have plenty of fun events going on. I think there's a costume party that will be happening there towards the end of the month. Anyways, this place is great if you're a bored college student near the Boca area, decide to bring a date here or even relax with friends. Sad to say as I really liked this place and enjoyed going, I have never been disrespectful or made any problems here ever which is why I took this all so personally. I have been coming here on and off for years, pretty frequently. Bringing them new customers and profit consistently. Never had an issue other than some of the bartenders being a little dense and ignoring me when trying to order or close my tab. Until last night where my friends and I were treated incredibly disrespectfully and yelled at by Zack, one of the bartenders, over a simple misunderstanding. All the employees other than Jenny and Kylie, the short Kylie as there are two of them, are airheads and have no concern for their customers, regulars included. Wont be bringing anyone or recommending this place to anyone any longer. You would think there would be a little more respect and consideration for regulars. I was also accused of not paying my tab from a previous night when I have never left without closing my tab as well as being charged for drinks I never ordered. Also fairly certain they overcharged me at least 5 dollars more than what I usually pay for 2 drinks but I didn't even argue and just left as I could not deal with them anymore that night. Jenny's kindness and the drinks are the only things that keep me coming back, however, probably wont be nearly as frequently from now on. Everything wrong about my Valentines Day date at Nakava.l. For starters I received a text message promoting BOGO chocolate covered strawberries and free sandwiches between 5-8 pm. After dinner elsewhere we stopped in for a special little treat. We get there at 7pm and there's no chocolate covered strawberries and no free sandwiches. The place was half full with what seemed to be regulars. Asked about the promo and was told they couldn't get The strAwberries in time and was too late to stop the promo messages from going out. About 20 mins later staff sets up a table with simple ham, turkey cheese bread etc. we made the best of it and asked the manager for kava. If you've never had it, be warned, kava tastes like dirt. I don't get it. It's supposed to be like this. It was horrible. You drink it for the benefits which I totally get. To top all this off, I have hearing issues and was having difficulty taking with my date, we were at A side table and apparently I was taking loud because an older regular sitting st the table next to us began to mock me for taking to loud. I have about 60-70% hearing loss. I didn't know this was happening, my date goes over to explain my medical issues to this jerk, and he berated HER She complained to an employee who said "WELL SOME OF OUR REGULARS ARE VERY TERRITORIAL" Are you freaking kidding me????? Kava kava really has no effect on me. That, or its effects are exaggerated. After drinking two servings of their "strongest" drink (served out of a punch bowl), I felt a slight numbness in my mouth. That's it. With that out of the way, you're left with a fairly bad tasting drink (not as bad as you'd think, though; it's basically saw dust diluted with water) that costs more than $3 and has no real benefit. There's also something kind of lame about this place. I kept hearing the regulars ask the girl at the counter to "pass another shell." It reminded me of being at a party with a bunch of out of touch old people, obsessing over "reefer." Something about the experience rubbed me the wrong way. I was also put off by the whole faux-Polynesian atmosphere. The owner was even wearing a Hawaiian shirt. I don't know how a business like this lasts seven years. You're better off hanging out at a coffee shop. It's an admirable concept, but it's just kind of pointless. Kind of feels like hanging out with a bunch of wannabes trying to start their own trend that will never, ever take off. read more

I love the Yogi brand kava tea so I wanted to give this place a try and see what it was all about. Well one things for sure, this is no Yogi tea. This is the real deal kava tea that tastes super bitter, and I had a hard time taking it down. This place is for the serious kava drinker unlike me, but it had a cool South Pacific vibe and very friendly patrons that made me feel welcome. I don't know where to start. My friend introduced me to this place a couple months ago. At first I was skeptical about the idea of a "bar" that did not serve alcohol. However after 5 kavas and 5 kratoms I soon realized this place will be my future home. The environment is amazing, pure relaxation and serenity. I've been to a lot of kava bars and Nakava's product is by FAR the best I've had, it's worth the drive for me (try the 'chief's'-- it's super strong). The bartenders are all really cool people.
