Goodbye Home Depot, hello Cal Herbold's Nursery! After eight years in the high desert, I finally gave it a try. It's much bigger and has more variety than it appears from the street, with costs being comparable. So nice to have a local nursery like the good ol' days. Went here for the first time today and after the rock guy asked if I needed help, he directed me indoors. Gal working register was kind enough to help me find edible plants for my sulcata tortoise. Including sod, woo hoo! Exactly what I needed. I will be flushing the plants and sod with diluted vinegar then water for a few days, but I know my boy Neptune will be thrilled when he sees them in his enclosure. Once done shopping, another guy hopped off his tractor to come help load the car. Now is that respect for your elders and great customer service or what? Thanks to all for your help. Went looking for Carolina cherry laurels and was shocked at what Lowes and Home Depot want for them. I found them here in a much larger pot and for more that half the price of Lowes or Home Depot and a third of what they wanted online from other places. Customer service was excellent and now a month later they are all thriving. This is my new place for plants! read more

the worst nursery i have ever done business with first bought what was supposed to be clean dirt it was full of rock then bought a fruit tree and died right away took it back and they could care less office staff very rude read more

I can't give 5 stars because when you buy plants or trees here, you have nothing to tell you what kind of plant it is. (I don't remember all this stuff) For example, I recently bought 4 plants and after I got home I had questions about them. So, in order to google information, I needed their names. I looked at my receipt, and it just said 4 plants on it, no names. I looked at the buckets they came in, and again nothing, no names. So, I ended up driving back there to get the names of my plants to do further research on them to determine the best place to plant them. I really wanted information about plants with non-invasive roots. Anyhow, the people are nice and they have nice plants. Just don't go when it's really busy and use your cell phone to take pics of the signage with the plant name on it in case you can't remember all that stuff. read more

I've been using this nursery for just over a year since moving to Apple Valley. I bought a lot of plants from them and they are doing very well. Their prices are good, customer service is always good, friendly and accurate. Since I'm a senior, they always help me out with everything. Their selection is good. I usually get cactus & succulents, but they have other selections. So, if you need a good nursery, this is a great place to go! read more

Called to have a truck load of small river rock poured in our yard. Associates were knowledgeable, friendly, and able to give me exact pricing over the phone. A week later our scheduled delivery arrived! It's nice to not have a dirt-filled yard, and have little pebbles instead. The delivery driver was great at maneuvering his truck into our little yard and didn't leave a mess at all. Thank you! read more

Came here the other day to buy my mom a Palo Verde tree and ended up getting the tree and a habanero chili plant. The man who loaded the tree into my truck was very friendly, knowledgeable and showed me different trees. The huge lot had a variety of trees and plants. I would definitely recommend this nursery to friends and family. read more

3 pallets of quality sod delivered on time, on the day requested. All pieces in good health and usable with uniform thickness and color. The 2x4 size vs the smaller size found at home improvement stores is nice, not to mention the cost savings buying from nursery and getting a commercial grade sod to boot. You can tell it is robust and will do well with traffic. read more

I called to ask if they Had Pygmy Date Palms available guy said, Yes. It was a 30 min Drive for me. I finally show up asking for the Pygmys. Guy points me to the wrong palm tree. He clearly didnt know what Pygmy were. Waste of my time & gas. read more

The guys working in the office need a serious lesson on customer service. Asked about some rock they have been out of for 3 months now (I understand the current situation and how things are harder to get) and the guy just laughed and said "yeah good luck." Couldn't get an update or wouldn't take my name down to let us know when they would get it. Stay on the tractor and out of the office if you're going to be unprofessional. read more

Perfect and just what i wanted. This place doesn't have all the bells and whistles and huge sale signs to get your attention. You get there and walk about without pushy salesmen. I was greeted by 2 employees while i was checking it out. I was looking for very large planters for my trees and they dug into their storage shed and found some. One of the employees introduced me to Cal. Cal is very knowledgeable and down to earth. Was able to pick his brain about some troubleshooting and got straightforward answers. I had to buy more then i came for because the prices were so reasonable and the plants looked healthy. Plus... i love supporting small and good natured businesses. I was told by a friend to go to Cal's, so here's my two cents on it... go to Cal's and check it out for yourself, it's worth it! There was only one employee that spoke mostly spanish. I didn't have any issues finding an English speaker. Most of the items have prices on them, if they don't it is easy to find someone to help. I also noticed they won't sell you a plant that was recently transplanted ect, good business ethic. read more

great prices and accommodating. got a load of dirt and a delivery of sod and both were polite, on time and good quality. these cats are old school. funny it looks the same as when i came here as a kid, before the big box stores were in the desert. it's great because Lowes or Home Depot won't deliver sod, they won't even allow you to pre-pay and save it. read more

This is a long-established, independent, local nursery. I bought some plants from a few of the "big box" stores, and had to take them back when they died. Cal's nursery has their plants out in the open instead of in side of "artificial" nurseries that block sunlight and WIND! They'll give you honest advice and spend time answering your questions. You can also take pictures of your yard and either take them in or upload them to their Facebook page, and they'll help you the best that they can. read more

Cal's Does It Right! Called to see if they had a particular plant, gentleman said he thought so but wanted to make sure so he checked and came back quickly to indicate that they had three left, the size and the price. They go the extra mile to make sure to provide great customer service. My parent's shopped here starting in the 1960's and it is still the best. read more

I found plants and varieties that I don't see elsewhere. Plants are hardened to desert climate and ready to plant. They have been in the business a long time, and know what works here. Very polite. Carry lady bugs and praying mantis. Good people to answer questions. read more

As previously stated, Herbod's Cal Nursery is a good place to go they are hospitable and knowledgeable.

Cal Herbold's is consistently lacking in help, and in one experience the staff was outwardly rude. The plants frequently look to be in a poor state. Not helping make a case to spend extra money with the "local guy" instead of going to Home Depot. read more
