It's been a few years so it's time to update my review! Heretic Games has a great stock of popular games, including card games, board games, RPGs, miniatures, and tabletop games. They also carry plenty of accessories and supplies for those games. If they don't have it in stock, they're happy to order it for you! The owners and staff are knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. They can often offer painting tips or insight on products and the suitability of a game for your group or preference! Best of all, the store is the hub of a gaming community that is inclusive and inviting. There's events going on every day, and they have a schedule board to show you when activities are happening. They also maintain a "fan" page on Facebook (hereticgamers) that players use to inquire about events, meet up with fellow gamers, or plan events. Was really looking forward to coming here after reading all the reviews. It was clean and spacious. Walked in and the female asian employee wasn't all that welcoming. Like the pictures, the tables are in the middle and the board games and stuff are against the wall.They have a very small selection of open board games and a not so big selection of board games for sale compared to Gamescape and other stores. They definitely need to up their stock for both unless it is just mainly a miniatures kind of place. Going by the yelp rating scale, 2 stars, Meh. I've experienced better. read more

Best place to get unique board and card games! First time going there today with friends. Big wide clean open space. Very friendly staff. You can play their demo games there and be exposed to many games you might have not heard of before. Games can take a while to finish but there's drinks for sale so there's direct access to good refreshments. If you're confused which instructions the staff will help. There's also a table with kids games which makes the store great for many ages. The hours don't always have to match up with the business hours on the window. There are times like today where they kept the store open for a lil longer especially if it's a busy day. Definitely looking foward to coming back again and possibly buying a board game there. :) read more

I recently played on a Saturday afternoon, and there were people playing Magic, Star Wars Xwing and Star Wars destiny. Really great atmosphere and clean space. They also sell drinks (and allow you to bring your own in). They seem to have a great stock of Magic, Star Wars Xwing, Warhammer and other similar types of game. There is an active community and they have frequent organized play events. They probably have the best gaming space on the Peninsula, with tons of tables and a nice and clean atmosphere. Owners seem really nice, and seem to be really focused on helping building up a great gaming community. Ill probably switch my pre-orders from games over to them. Highly recommended, especially if you are looking for a place to play with friends (or meet new people to play with). read more

Came into the store for the first time today, exploring downtown San Bruno and got excited to see a game store! David was super friendly and helpful. Good selection, especially for a new store, and more than willing to place special orders for items not in stock. Great open spaces for gaming, and a real willingness on the part of the owners to accommodate gamers. I was happy with the purchasing experience, good selection of games, helpful staff... problem is lack of return policy. Got home and realized I way over-paid for a game, almost 3x what it's selling for elsewhere, on an expensive title. Return policy is non-existent, all sales final. :( read more

The store is very spacious and incredibly neat. The owners are nice and always ready to help you when you need. There is a wide selection of board games (obviously) as well as a few ones that you're free to demo. Parking can be a bit rough. You just have to get lucky with one of the adjacent parking lots or street parking. On the downside, you always have to ask the store owner if you can use their restroom for some odd reason. Plus, they don't do returns, but they were nice enough to give me a refund when they sold me the wrong sized sleeves. I had asked for Dixit sleeves (120 x 80 mm) and they gave me Tarot sleeves (120 x 70 mm). The 10 mm makes a difference! read more

The owner Scott has helped me improved my painting skills and has taught me a lot of tricks. This is a spacious gaming store with custom tables built for war games like 40k, KoW, Malifaux, Infinity, and X-Wing. Board game selection is limited but well curated, but don't be afraid to ask them to special order something for you. Overall the owners and the gaming community here are really nice! I just stopped by Heretic Games today on a referral from another local game store who didn't carry much inventory of Star Wars Miniatures game stuff. I was greeted by a guy name Dave who was awesome and very informative. He took the time to show me around and answered all of my questions since I'm new to playing this game. They have some of the best prices in store and even compared to online. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for X-wing or Star Trek miniatures game supplies. read more

So yesterday was the first time that I stepped into Heretic Games and I must say that I was thoroughly impressed. Everyone was incredibly friendly and the owner personally helped me find the perfect couple of games to play at a birthday party with friends. In general, I tend to be pretty picky with my games and normally I would be hesitant with buying so many games at once but he did a fantastic job explaining each recommendation in a short and concise manner that made it easy to pick out the perfect games for my needs. Walked in here with the kids and didn't feel welcome at all. Not only did we not get greeted, but they looked at us as if we were about to steal something. I was excited to go in here and see what it was about, but when the guys playing their game all stop playing and stand up and stare at you, it makes patrons feel quite uncomfortable. A simple "can I help you" would have been good enough for me, but they basically stared us out of the store. Won't go back and I definitely wouldn't recommend it. read more

Stopped in to get a simple game for a party. While this is a serious gamer store, they had a bunch of great group games for non-RPG players. David, who helped us, was extremely knowledgeable and helpful even though he was busy setting up for a Saturday tournament. I first got into MAGIC: THE GATHERING during the first series of CORE SET, then after that it was Fallen Empires/Ice Age, etc. That was way back in high school, and I stopped playing M:TG because I spent *a ton* to build this destroyer 60 card deck that was stolen. After that happened, I gave up and never went back to M:TG. Coming across this shop, I was excited. It brought me back to how fun and exciting it was to game. I was with my daughter and she was ready to go and I had a brief convo with the girl who worked up front telling her how it was a cool shop and that I missed M:TG. I don't know if this is common protocol but she was super kind enough to give me two introductory card sets to get started and reacquainted with M:TG since a lot has changed since High School (I'm 35 now. lol). It was the coolest thing ever. I hope to maybe go toe to toe with my wife with these two complimentary introductory decks and maybe who knows, we'll get back into it and jump into a tournament here at HERETIC. Heretic Games is the best place to hang out and let your [often docile] childish imagination roam free. Also, bear in mind that the store is notorious for being invaded by the occasional fencer, so be ready to repost a review in the event that someone else tries to foil the store's reputation. If you've ever wondered what heaven would look like if God was a geek who adequately stocked a small building with boardgames and beverages, than this is an oddly specific fantasy that a dedicated staff and founders group has just fulfilled for you. Now go out of the house for once to sit in a public chair and become more cultured by the power of fantasy. Escape from the calamities and atrocities in life by pulling up a chair, grabbing a game, and drowning out the real world responsibilities that afflict your mind, like whether or not you can manage to keep your wife from robbing you blind in the prenup, or if your boss knows that the affair that's capsizing his marriage will result in you being fired because he'll be in a hostile disposition and when you go to tell him on Monday that the report on company finances has yet to be completed, and you try to reason that you've been under a lot of stress too and you know you and most of your coworkers are most likely screwed. Just think happy thoughts and live in the here and know whilst enjoying the fictitious places you have authority within, while playing one of the many games from the vast catalogue available to you, the consumer.
