Room #5 - I didn't get to experience the other rooms, but #5 was unbelievable - the view was magical, and the room was so spacious. Recommend for a special occasion as it is $$$$. Wonderful walking trails, along with a private beach. The resort fee includes a Continental Breakfast - pretty basic - we were there for 2 breakfasts and no meat (bacon/sausage) is included; pancakes, toast/bagels, eggs. Basic but at least it has a beautiful view to start your day (you are expected to tip, even though it is self-serve; they say the value of the breakfast is $35, which is ridiculous). Was not impressed with the restaurant, but the bar looked like a nice place to kick back and relax. But loved the accomodations! read more

We've visited Heritage House twice now and loved it. Coming from San Francisco there's quite a few popular options along the coast, and this is becoming our favorite. Especially for how magical the grounds are. Special shout out to "Duck" in reception. He really added to the comfort and enjoyment of our stay. Was considering booking them for a wedding venue, but then they wasted my time. The Sales Manager Ananda was late to our venue tour by OVER HALF A HOUR! So unprofessional. Location is nice but LOOKS AREN'T ENOUGH!!! When it comes to a special day like your wedding day, You need a team you can actually rely on. And I'm sad to say with the Heritage house, We could NOT rely on them. As much as we wanted to make this work..after the sales manager AND front office rudely didn't follow up with me after waiting weeks for a response my fiance and I finally had enough and decided to look elsewhere. I was communicating with them for weeks and ready to book but then was ghosted. But I'm honestly glad this happened because we ended up finding a way better venue that's more involved and actually makes you feel like they're gonna take care of you and handle everything rather than not even having good communication. If this is how they were handling things now before we even booked I can't even imagine how it was going to be if we ended up moving forward with them. This was honestly a huge blessing in disguise. I'm leaving this review as a cautionary tale for other couples looking for a wedding venue, just to warn you, so you don't waste your time by sharing our experience and the facts, not to bash the venue. I just want others to know what we experienced. It was extremely stressful and upsetting to do all that work just for them to stop communication abruptly. And even when they were answering at first, it was not in a timely manner. Moral of the story is: if you're looking for a reliable place to book your wedding venue, this is not the place. Some things are more important than looks. So do yourself a favor and find a place that actually offers reliable communication. You don't deserve to be stressing during such a happy time. All my friends and I kept saying, "I think we died," because it truly felt like heaven. We were greeted right away with an incredible sunset view. While one friend checked in, my other friend and I walked outside the hotel restaurant to the patio, where there was a fire pit. We sat down and almost immediately one of the staff members asked if we wanted anything to drink or eat. Of course, we started with dirty martinis and they were delicious! We also tried the seafood pasta, Brussels sprouts, and lobster bisque. I'd probably skip the lobster bisque next time, but everything else was amazing. Our waiter, I believe his name was Duck, was so friendly and attentive and made the experience even better. Our room was pretty big, with a spacious shower, and the beds were surprisingly very comfortable. Breakfast was included with our stay and was pretty decent - the waffle maker was a big hit for us. We walked around the area, and I swear every direction we went had a beautiful view. We felt completely at peace the entire time. It's wild that a place this beautiful is only about a 3 hour drive from San Francisco. We're already talking about coming back next year! read more

what was a great experience in April was a mess in August: I asked for a specific room (which they gave us in April) but somehow, NOT now, couldn't support this request given 6 weeks in advance. No response from management. My birthday (a big one) and I am very understanding about space, but if NYC can give me my room of choice, why can't Heritage? Avoid them. They don't care. We stayed here for a night for a wedding. The views are great! The room is banged up, everything is old and coming apart. The bed is not comfortable, because it's old and worn. The room is dark, there is only a fireplace for heat and it's not temp controlled to maintain a temp. The bathroom is dated, dark and the barn doors don't really fully close. The toilet is not separate. There was no water provided or anything else in the room. The service is lacking and the breakfast was pitiful, it was like a holiday inn. Absolutely beautiful views but not much else. There was a surprising lack of thoughtful design for a four star class hotel. For example, the TV wasn't connected to the internet (and seemed to be blocked from doing so when we tried), preventing us from casting our streaming services. We watched cable TV with ads. There's no business center or anywhere to sit if you need to do any work after checkout but before leaving. There's no pool or hot tub, although I think some of the rooms have private ones. The continental breakfast was served in a beautiful dining room but not significantly different from elevated from what you might see at a 3 star hotel. Booked this hotel thinking it was another resort-style place I had stayed at over a decade ago. Thank goodness for the mix-up--it turned out to be a wonderful surprise. We came to celebrate my partner's birthday, and the property sits on stunning land with breathtaking Mendocino ocean views. From the outside it has a rustic charm, but our room was modern and comfortable, and the balcony under the clear, starry sky was perfect--especially with the peaceful sound of frogs at night adding to the magic. Everything was clean, the staff there were incredibly helpful and nice, the property was well kept (there were workers outside cleaning up the landscaping constantly while we were there and it looked the part). They were dog friendly which was a large part of the reason we decided to choose this resort in particular and handed us a nice doggy bag on our arrival. First of all, if you are traveling up from the Bay Area, take Hwy 1 one way and 128 the other if you have the time. Two different beautiful windy drives. Took the 2 hour 45 min drive on a Friday after work and it was gorgeous. FYI when we turned off 101 to 128 and descended the next 30 min to the coast the temperature dropped from 79 to 56. We arrived ahead of the sunset and were greeted by "Duck" who offered us water and cookies (note office closes at 10 and kitchen closes at 9). We were assigned room 16 which was at the far complex on top of the hill. 3 min walk to the main house and 3 min walk to the cliff and 10 min walk to the private beach. We found a bottle of complimentary champagne upon arrival. The room has been tastefully upgraded and as it is at the top of the hill has the most private deck and 270 degree views. BTW if you see pictures of a beautiful soaking tubs to sit it as you watch the sunset those are rooms 47-50. And if you are a film buff for the movie Same Time Next Year, that is room 43. Incredibly romantic, it is a quiet place. Probably ran into maybe a half dozen couples outside of the dining area and bar as most people are wandering the grounds or sitting cozily by their electric fireplace. Even spent an hour one morning down at the beach taking photos and did not run into a soul The place is well-behaved dog friendly although I didn't bring one and could have easily seen my dog enjoying himself. Other cool points: Your resort fee includes 4 main things: 1) Internet if you can escape connectivity which I did, 2) In-room Keurig, 3) breakfast buffet and 4) morning yoga I took advantage of all 4 things and breakfast had a little of everything. I even took chocolate croissants back to the room for the evening and brought back some champagne from a local winery and drank it while watching the sunset in front of the fireplace. Again most rooms are part of a complex. Room 16 is part of the La Maison complex which I highly recommend. Definitely would come back as I'd like to try maybe one of their premium bathroom rooms or something else similarly unique. Heritage House Resort has that B&B feel with resort luxuries and privacy. Staff are friendly and helpful, but remain appropriately behind the scenes so as not to interrupt your peace. I was even meditating in the meadow and a couple of the room service people in their golf cart slowed down and lowered their voices to a whisper. Later I saw them and they greeted me with a knowing smile. Notes: recommend no oversized trucks or vehicles as the property roads are very narrow. Of course with every resort there is some wear and tear especially in a coastal environment with salt air. The lock on our front door was tricky at first. While no screen doors, there is no need to leave the sliding doors open (mosquitos or other bugs can enter the room). Old shower plumbing was visible (handheld hose) but would never have used it as rain head shower was perfect! Biggest pet peeve - too many guests wearing Dodger caps (jk) read more

My fiancé and I had the most incredible experience staying at the Heritage House Resort for his birthday! From the moment we arrived, we were treated with such warmth and attention. The amenities were fantastic, and we especially loved our hot tub room, which had breathtaking views of the ocean and a cliffside. Waking up to that sunrise was truly unforgettable. My husband and me have been going to Heritage House for many years. We just returned from a wonderful five nights in January. From the amazing front desk staff, Sarah, Anya, Duck, Matt, to the wonderful restaurant and bar staff, Julien, Dory, Chef(name unknown)... this place continues to be one of our favorite destinations. If you love super Duper down to earth and kind people, epic ocean views from every room(we have been in about eight of them over the years)...and love nature, peacefulness, cozy fireplaces... this is a must try adventure for you. The dining experience available on the property in their restaurant provides buffet breakfast (with the room cost), and absolutely stunning dinner's prepared by a French chef. I want to mention names of all the kind people that greet us there every time we come. Sarah Custer is the general manager and a delight to speak with, a very special lady!!! We had the best weekend away at the Heritage House. We didn't stay at the actual hotel, instead we rented one of the cottages on the property, and it was the perfect size for my family and my mother-in-law to stay. It was also really nice to have a kitchen with young kids. The deck opened up to a wooded area, so it really felt like we had privacy. The hotel was so nice and accommodating, they really felt like they went above and beyond to give us recommendations for places to eat, and things to do in the area. We were also totally blown away by the breakfast buffet that they had in the morning. It was one of the best hotel breakfast buffets that I've ever had, they had fresh baked pastries and so many other delicious things to eat. It was included as part of our stay. It was a huge bonus, especially with kids. I highly recommend this as a place to stay especially if you're traveling with young kids. We can't wait to go back! read more

The hotel the rooms the views are all five star. They also have car chargers, which is great. They need more but they do have three but only two parking spots reasonably. Challenged like much of Mendocino is staffing. Staffing was poor. There was a gentleman with a leaf blower outside my window on a hot afternoon and I tried to get him and get his attention and get him to stop. He basically ignored me for until I went out and physically stood in front of him And asked him to stop that at which point he breaks into laughter in my face. This black, simple decency and humanity really makes one question who are these people working here and what type of management if any type of leadership exist. Anyway I would likely stay here again because the facility location is all very nice. However, if another location is available the similar rate, I would try that first simply because of the lack of hospitality among the staff.. read more

We were instructed by your staff to wait for your call, which we did, email you and wait for you to come in, since you were the only individual who could made decisions. We don't know its your day off as guests. No one asked for your personal number? During the blackout we asked your front desk staff who we should call after hours if the power is still off, since you don't have any staff onsite after 10pm, we were given an after hours emergency number. Holding a resort accountable, and attempting to contact you to provide feedback about our stay is not a demand, its a minimal expectation, you are in the hospitality business. I left several points of constructive criticism in hopes that your resort might do better. I see the issue is the management. Don't get defensive, learn to adopt some of the feedback people are leaving as an area for improvement. Firstly a professional doesn't attack someone's character as you are doing. I left an honest review. You emailed me saying I "lied" to my travel company. Why would I do that? I let them know we were told by your staff that due to the outage there would be compensation for our stay. And that there was a power outage during 1 of the 2 nights of our stay for which we would like partial compensation. Not sure what the lie was in that? Handling of this situation could have been vastly different. If you have one staff member unable to run to all the rooms to ensure folks are okay, then have a contingency plan to bring on others in these cases. If power outages are a known occurance, than its even less of an excuse to not provide rooms with flashlights during the storm season, or have back up power plans, or some sort of emergency lighting so guests are not in danger walking about in the pitch dark. This should be a best practice initiative that your resort should adopt, especially at the price you are charging guests. Also, I didn't treat anyone poorly, and perhaps you were misinformed. Duck and Debbie were super kind and Debbie was regretful for the mistep in our stay when she was checking us out. She genuinely was trying her best the morning after the outage. Max or whomever the front desk young guy was, was also nice, but likely a little inexperienced. The only staff that was rude was Anya, she had no customer service skills. Your resort seems to have a poor reputation amongst locals as well. I didn't leave this in my original review, but two of the eating establishments we visited in Mendocino and Fort Bragg, mentioned how poor the food was at Heritage House, and not to eat there. Two very nice locals chatted with us and stated how this resort has had issues keeping staff and its a "revolving door". As for the value for money, your establishment doesn't cut it. We didn't think anything we requested was extraordinary, a simple call back. Even if you had called us and spoke to us in a timely manner, we probably would have not cared about getting a refund, since it would have showed that you cared for guest impressions. Your email to me stated you had a family emergency, which is also understandable. However, when your staff keeps taking messages for you, and doesn't relay that you are out of office but rather that you are "busy" and "in meetings", guests will consider this as disregard. I suggest having a better communication plan with your staff, and contingency staffing in the future for unexpected occurances. Of course we won't ever be coming to stay at your resort again, which is such a shame because there is just so much potentital here. We hope that those considering you, weigh their options. The views are spectacular, but the hospitality is appalling! The front desk staff were very unhelpful at enforcing their car charging policy. One white Tesla was parked for about 18 hours even though it only takes about 1 hour to charge. You need to register your car upon check in, but the receptionist refused to call the room of this car. There are only 2 electric car chargers (only 1 is Tesla compatible), but half the cars in the lot are Teslas. We were worried we would get stranded there, because the nearest supercharger is 2 hours away in Petaluma. This made our entire trip extremely stressful, because from the hours of 5pm-11pm, we walked to the charger every hour to check if that car was still there and to ask the receptionist to contact that car's owners. Then we got up at the crack of dawn to do the same thing, instead of sleeping in and enjoying our weekend. Multiple Tesla owners were circling this charger in the morning and all had the same anxious look we did. Also the TV didn't work, like at all. They knew this but pretended to send a maintenance person to check if we knew how to turn on a TV. This was an extremely condescending and frustrating experience. "Well it turns on so it's working. Oh you want to watch things on the TV? You can connect your laptop to it to watch things, but it doesn't come with programs." The restaurant was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. We waited 2 hours to be seated and they don't do it by first come first serve. There are about a dozen great restaurants all within 2-10 minute drive. read more

Yesterday I stopped by this amazing spot to check out one of the most picturesque spots on the coast. I'm lucky I'm so comfortable with my own company as it seems I'm stuck with me . I hadn't been here in a long time and after the experience, am kicking myself. The hospitality and professionalism of the staff was awesome. Everyone from the hotel manager to the bar/restaurant staff all greeted me warmly and made sure I had all I needed. I wasn't there to eat, but wish I did as their menu looks enticing and the specials even more so. I did choose to try two of their signature drinks, both hit the spot with my favorite being the Bartender Robin's special creation Sour Waffles. I would do back just for it and I highly recommend it to all of you who partake. Also if you eat, ask for Mina and you won't regret her amazing service. New Years week was our third stay at Heritage House. Our first two visits felt absolutely luxurious, but I guess things have gone downhill since then, because this third visit was underwhelming. First off, we arrived in the 6 o'clock hour (in winter, so it's nearly pitch dark.) The lobby door was wide open and there was no one at the front desk. We waited, and after a while, we checked around the dining hall and looked outside to see if there was staff around, but there were no signs. I made several phone calls to some of the numbers listed on the business cards at the desk, but service wasn't great, so not all went through. I started to be a little concerned because the ones that did go through were going to an unattended cell phone on the desk and next to it, was a woman's purse on a chair that sat wide open. After 20 minutes of waiting, a woman finally walked in from outside. It turns out, she was talking to their contract launderers by their van the whole time. I couldn't believe that a staff member watched us enter the lobby in and out, and couldn't stop her conversation to check us in, or she could've simply stated "Hi guys! I'll be with you in a few minutes!" I've never encountered a situation like this before at any bed and breakfast, hotel, or even at a motel. Furthermore, there's just so many things here that don't make sense. There are no water bottles provided inside the room or water refill stations throughout the property. You would have to go to the dining hall to fetch water, but that's dependent on the dispensers actually being full and the lobby being open. There are other stays in the area that claim their sink water is also drinking water in the welcome papers, but I wouldn't know if here is or isn't because it's not stated. As others have also said, the fireplace is pretty, but it seems to be the room's only source of heat. The room was cold as it was winter, and we would have to sit as closely and safely as possible to feel comfortable. On the last day of our stay, I actually was lying on the bed and saw that the ceiling fan started on it's own. The remote was still sitting in its holder attached to the wall, and we didn't touch it the whole visit, except to try turning off the fan after that happened. There's just an overall lack of attention to details here. Other examples would be that there's no hand soap in the bathroom. They provide little boxed toiletries, so I just had to opt for the "facial soap" to be our hand soap, but there was no dish to place the bar soaps in. I also tried using the iron, but I had to give up on it, as the holes on the metal plate were crusty with hard water and kept getting residue on my skirt. The icing on the cake is the "complimentary" parking, breakfast, wifi and yoga classes, but really you pay for those things in your $35/day resort fee. How is it complimentary if you pay for it? Furthermore, yoga is only available on the weekend (or at least when we visited), so I guess you're missing out on your "free perks" if you're not there on the weekend. read more

Spending a few days on the coast to unwind after a busy time at work and I discovered this hotel nestled along the coast line. My ocean view room has a large patio overlooking the wave break and had a beautiful sunset view. The room was immaculate and had a black and white interior design which fit the coastal landscape. My dog enjoyed sitting by the fireplace on his blanket with his ball from the hotel while I enjoyed the deep bath tub with a window view of the ocean. Request room 48! So, We were back over the last week for a four-day stay at one of our favorite places in Mendo. We stayed in room 45 this time and the view was fantastic. We had breakfast at the hotel and were quite pleased with the food and service. Everyone was super friendly and nice. My only complaint about this trip is that the neighbors we had for one night had a golden retriever who was so happy playing with his family that he didn't say hello to me. Jaw-droppingly beautiful, well-maintained resort with views (from luxurious room, floral landscaped grounds, restaurant) of very active ocean waves hitting rocks in a cove below. My husband and I had a superb experience there exploring the grounds and the area (we had planned to go to Mendocino in the evening but on seeing how beautiful the setting was and how friendly the staff were we quickly changed our plans to stay on-resort and have dinner in the restaurant there instead). Seeing the colors change on the cliffs as the light changed in the evening was really special, as was listening to the accomplished spanish guitar player over dinner. read more

Our room was beautiful - facing the ocean with a gorgeous view. However, it could have used a little tender loving care. The sheets seemed old, the rug had a stain on it, etc. It felt old. But my real complaint is the breakfast that was included with the room. The dining area was stark, there were spider webs and spiders on the ceiling; the food was totally mediocre and displayed like a cafeteria. Flowers on the table would have been nice. Some actual servers for more coffee, etc. would have helped. And the breakfast itself was not tasty, the fruit seemed to be a Costco It was just depressing. We went into town for breakfast after our first day. At these prices, I expect a whole lot more. read more

This is my favorite place on earth. If I had the money to buy it, I would. Away from even the small town of Mendocino but not too far. This is a calm place with a beautiful ocean, ruff or calm. It's always tranquility. Stop for the sunset, walk the dog, and visit the restaurant. read more

Run, do not walk nor stay here. Woke up to ants in my food in the kitchen and all over my toiletries in the bathroom. Asked to have it cleaned up when we were gone. Only to return to a room filled with ants and the bed unmade. Never again. Full pass. Won't be back ever. read more

I've been staying here multiple times a year, for years. Genuinely, I don't think I'll be returning. My last few bookings became increasingly inconsistent + I kept trying to give it a chance but I'm officially done. I booked a PREMIUM ocean view room + paid in full, in advance. When we arrived, we were so unimpressed. The room I was checked into was definitely not a premium view room + was falling apart. For some reason they checked me into an ADA room I didn't request + I was horrified that the room was broken in multiple places. The room that they reserve for their ADA guests is falling apart??! That's so dangerous + shows the lack of intentionality + care. The room + the restaurant are overpriced. The cost does not match the value for either. The restaurant is also extremely understaffed. I emailed the inn right after my stay to ask questions regarding the issues I experienced and never received a reply. I frequent the area OFTEN + trust me, there are so many other, better options to stay at. I wanted to give (2) stars but then I remembered the price I paid for what I received and kept it at (1). It still baffles me that I paid EXTRA + in advance. The goods/services do not match the money paid. I know losing me as a customer isn't going to affect their bottom line + time will move on, but maybe I can save someone else's adventure by encouraging them to stay somewhere else. The grounds are beautiful, the gentleman at check-in was hospitable and accommodating, the dinner and bar staff were great, the cookies in the lobby were yummy, and our massages were amazing! Those are the positives. Our room, #43, was a two bed, large room. We loved the spaciousness and ocean-view deck. However, our bathroom barn-door would not close, and it pulled away from the framing if we pulled too far in one direction. The room is outdated and needs A LOT of work. The "Spa" at HHR is solely a room with two beds for massages. There are NO spa amenities. The weekday breakfast staff was practically non existent. They presented no service to the few guests who were at breakfast, yet managed to leave a zero-balance receipt at our table, for a TIP. The young lady at the front desk never answered the phone, nor did she respond to voicemails we left requesting extra towels. When I saw her the next day, and asked why she never answered the phone nor responded to our voicemails--which made us late for our massages, shortening our 90 minute session--she was rude and became defensive. I spoke with a manager about the lack of service at breakfast and from the front desk representative. The manager was genuinely upset. She stated I would be receiving a call from the GM, as this was something the resort deemed unacceptable. That call never came. Evidently, the GM didn't think it was a matter important enough to take the time to call--which explains the lack of service from some of the staff. This was going to be our new yearly retreat. However, after leaving with a stain on what could've been a near-perfect four-day getaway, we will never return. It's unfortunate, because HHR has the potential to be a MAGNIFICENT resort. read more

My husband surprised me with a Valentine's trip here. It was absolutely beautiful! The resort is overlooking the ocean. Heritage house was is peaceful and is far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. At night, you can see the stars and hear the waves crashing against the rocks. Our suite was quaint and cozy. We rented an oceanfront room and it was worth every penny. When you arrive, they have fresh baked chocolate chip cookies at the door. The staff was very kind and helpful. Valentines weekend did land on Super Bowl weekend which possibly made it fairly empty but I was happy with it that way. The food was tasty and everything had fresh ingredients from the area. The town of Mendocino is about 25 mins away, if you are looking for got leave the resort. I recommend this spot to anyone. read more

I usually don't like when couples leave "double reviews", but dinner last night was so bad I can't stop thinking about it. Check out the "French onion soup" in the attached photo. It's a piece of disgusting stale bread, with a half a slice of cold sandwich cheese, over some cooked onions in beef bouillon. Not to mention it took ONE HOUR to arrive. Sadly this was the best part of the meal. The fish tacos were awful and I feel gross I even ate one of them. The fish was bland and unseasoned, not to mention the bones I almost choked on. The tacos were wrapped in the cheap corn tortillas that you buy for $2 for 20 of them at the grocery store and were cold. The veggies were straight out of the bag and barely seasoned. I'm not sure what happened to this place as we'd been years ago but we definitely won't be back. And don't eat here, especially for an anniversary. read more

"The most expensive non-meal I've ever had." To be clear, this review is solely about the restaurant. The resort itself is quite impressive. Tonight my wife and I had dinner for our anniversary. Here's what happened: - Arrived at 7pm. Our simple dinner took 90 minutes. During that time, our server disappeared for nearly 25 minutes. The dining room is small, so his absence was obvious. - There's was something in my water. The server saw it and replaced it. The light was very dim, I couldn't see it. - We ordered a French onion soup, which we were told would arrive with the salad (it did not). It arrived late, was approaching lukewarm, and featured a stale piece of toast with basic melted cheese. We probably should have sent this back. - I ordered the seared ahi. It arrived so overcooked, it was like chewing leather. I cannot remember the last time I've sent a dish back, in fact tonight might've been the first. - My wife ordered the fish tacos. They were bland and lukewarm. She found four fish bones during chewing. They should've been sent back as well. In a nutshell, great place to stay. Find somewhere else to eat your meals. For early $100, it was the most expensive non-meal we've had. read more

Stayed one night during a road trip. Booked on Expedia for ~455/night. Stood outside while waiting to check in. No restaurant open onsite during covid. Stayed in Room 42. Cons: Weak WIFI connection. Bathroom door has no lock. Great for couples, not so good for a family of 4. Strange bedding. Pulled back duvet to crawl into bed to find that only the mattress pad on top of the bed was wrapped in a bed sheet. The mattress itself was not covered. Did not look like a bed I wanted to dive into and sleep. More like ...Ok, I guess it's ok for one night. I hope it's clean. Pros: Large room and the views are unbeatable from my room as well as shared grounds. There's also a small private, rocky beach. We were able to get late checkout, which was nice. Cute place but needs to be updated soon. For the price, it didn't meet my expectations. I give it 3 stars for the views and cause it's covid so maybe they were short staffed? read more
