Stayed at Little River Inn last October, but just now getting to a review. All I can really say is the place was worth every cent and then some. The rooms are quaint but spacious enough. But the real appeal is the views. Just unbelievably gorgeous. It's just one of those things you must do and see in person. We stayed in one of the rooms with the long shared balcony. My initial concern was privacy but it was a non-issue. Everyone was polite and friendly. No noise issues or anything. We spent most of our room time outside enjoying the views and just soaking all of the beauty in. The Little River Inn is just down the road from Mendocino, and a short 10-15 minute drive to Fort Bragg. Perfect location for what we were doing that weekend. Staff was wonderful. The real surprise of the trip was the restaurant. I normally shy away from hotel restaurants, as I prefer to sample the local cuisine. However, we decided to give it a try our first night for Dinner. I was delicious and quite popular with the locals as well. I'll be doing a separate review for the restaurant, as I strongly recommend having at least one meal there. We ended up having two...lol. Just a great stay and a definite revisit when we get the time again. If I could give the place more stars I would. read more

Very nice ,relaxing stay. We were in dog friendly rm 112. Very private and not much foot traffic so it worked well with our dog. Nice porch with comfy chairs to enjoy the garden and partial ocean view. Primarily garden so choose adjacent room if you want full view. The inn has only one outdoor uncovered table if you want to eat at the restaurant. We ordered our breakfast to be delivered and it was very nicely packed and tasty. Also, loved their bloody mary kit . Very nice ! Our patio was a nice spot to enjoy our meal with our dog. Overall,a nice stay,good location but would have loved a later check out. Its 10AM and that is a bit rushed when in vacation! read more

We stayed at the Inn just after Christmas through New Year's Eve in one of the cottages. Our previous stay was in one of the regular inn rooms overlooking the ocean. Both stays were great. The main inn rooms we stayed before had stairs to the second floor so it was a little challenging bringing in golf clubs and luggage but not a deal breaker since the room views are amazing! Some of the cottages are located across the highway from the main inn and restaurant. This is a blessing because it is not busy at all because there are only 4 cottages. Parking is right in front of your room. But when staying in the regular rooms you can walk to the restaurant, golf and spa. However, we loved the seclusion over the convenience. The cottages all have a private deck with a spa. We definitely took advantage of this perk over our stay even in the rain. The cottage also had a jetted tub with a window overlooking the ocean. The views from the room with the back of the cottage mostly windows was breathtaking with comfy chairs and a cozy fireplace. It was storming the first few days so we definitely took advantage of the coziness of the room relaxing with wine and a great book. The deck has seating and a table for two along with the spa. Once the weather cleared we enjoyed some wine and coffee in the morning while taking in the views. The bathroom had the jetted tub and a stand in enclosed shower. It was clean and had plenty of towels, etc. For housekeeping you can request it if your stay is more than 3 days. We did ask for coffee pods and sugar for coffee on the days we didn't go out or get room service. The bathroom could do with some modern updates to the floor tiles and such but overall it met our needs during our stay. There is a mini fridge, microwave and Keurig coffee maker with some supplies in a little nook. The bed was comfortable and warm considering the coastal storms and lower temps in December. We opted to extend our stay to enjoy the New Year's Eve dinner and music at the inn restaurant. We also golfed twice while we stayed and utilized the golf range. We love this little course that is filled with wildlife and has some challenging fairways and greens. We spotted deer, woodpeckers and lots of other birds. Overall we love the Mendocino area and this quaint little Inn. We love the history and the fact that it has a tennis court, golf course, spa, restaurant and bar as amenities. We hiked several of the parks and headlands during our stay as well so there is a lot to see and do in the area. We went into Mendocino and Fort Bragg for shopping and sight seeing. The glass beach is only about 20 minutes away. If you want a super relaxing place to stay we definitely recommend the Little River Inn. read more

We have coming to the Little River Inn for years and always considered it a favorite getaway - but this last visit was a real letdown. Right from check-in, the experience felt off. The employee at the front desk was curt and unfriendly, which set a negative tone that never improved. One of things that used to make this place stand out was the genuine warmth and hospitality. That now seems to be missing. The room felt tired and not as well maintained as on previous visits and the overall feeling was more indifferent than inviting. The buildings and grounds have really seen better days. Sadly, unless there are improvements, we won't be returning and wouldn't be recommending it the way we used to. read more

November 6-9, 2024. What a beautiful property with rooms that have spectacular views. We stayed here for 3 nights, and had a wonderful time. We booked a traditional upstairs room with an ocean view, and were very pleased. The room was comfortable, and included all that we needed--a TV (we did not use), a small refrigerator, Keurig machine, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, AND A BALCONY WITH A VIEW OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN!!! The balcony had two comfortable rocking chairs and a small table. It is a shared veranda, so it is not a private balcony, but there is a slight partition between each room, so you definitely have your "own" space. There is an on-site bar and restaurant. You can also order breakfast the night before to be delivered to your room in the morning. We did not try the restaurant, so I can't comment on that, but it looked nice. There is a trail from the property to Van Damme State Park. It's less than 1/4 mile to the park, and the trail, although narrow, is level and easy. It gets a bit steep right before you enter the Park, but nothing very strenuous. Once you get to the park, you can cross across Highway 1 (be careful here!) and access the beach. The property also has a golf course and a tennis court. On another note, the website for the Little River Inn is very informative, with 360 degree views of the rooms and information about what you may like, and what you may not like, about each room type. (For instance, some people don't like the shared veranda.) The website also showed which room James Dean stayed in when he filmed "East of Eden" (The room next to the bar, of course!) As you can see on their website, they have rooms with fireplaces, stand alone cottages, and even some pet-friendly rooms. Check it out! read more

Little River Inn, Mendocino , CA - November 6-9, 2024. We arrived on a Wednesday at about 3:30 pm for a three night stay. Checkin is at 4 pm, but the very friendly woman at the checkout counter said our room was ready. We were in room 223, which is an oceanview room on the top floor. We had planned the trip in July for the day after the National election as a way to escape exposure to the frenzied chaos we anticipated might occur afterwards. We were joined at the Inn by three other friends as well in hopes that this beautiful spot and all the activities it had to offer would take our minds off the election results and soothe our senses. Our room was nicely appointed with a very comfortable king size bed, modern furniture (with two comfortable chairs looking out to the ocean), cheerful room acsents, a closet with ironing board and iron, a nice bathroom (with a Keurig machine with coffee and tea, and a blow dryer). A sliding glass door opened out to a shared veranda with a couple rocking chairs and small table looking at the beautiful ocean with the sound of the waves below. After moving our luggage from the car to our room, we joined our friends in another oceanview room on the first floor. It was laid out a little different than ours and had a wet bar and wood burning fireplace. We enjoyed seeing a beautiful sunset off of their outside patio as we enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and our favorite cocktails. Later in the evening, I got a text from hotel staff member Ann asking if we were satisfied with our room. I answered the we were very satisfied. We stayed up a little later than we should have that first night and were a little slow to wake up the following morning, but after a few cups of coffee and breakfast, we were ready to go out and about. We headed to Jug Handle State Reserve just a little north of Mendocino. The 2.5 mile walk up the ecological staircase from the ocean to the pigmy forest was invigorating as we bathed our senses in the comforting pine and redwood forest. We enjoyed a nice lunch afterwards in Mendocino at Patterson's Pub, a favorite stop of ours. We met up at our friend's room again later that night and had a similar time as the night before, socializing, sharing stories, and surprisingly not talking about politics. The following day was a little more laid back than the first day. My wife did a one hour hike to Van Damme State Park, which is only a stone's throw away from the hotel, and I relaxed at the room. We drove into Mendocino a little later and checked out the Compass Rose Leather shop where our friend hoped to get a new strap for his mandolin. No luck with that but we found a nice hand crafted heart shaped necklace for my wife. Later that evening, we made the short 2.5 mile drive south to the Heritage Inn 5200 Restaurant where we had a delicious dinner with wine as we listened to a wonderful pianist. We were very happy with the three days we spent at Little River Inn. It was truly medicine for the soul. read more

This was my first time staying here. Taylor at the front desk was such a delight! She was able to change our room so we had an unobstructed view of the ocean. And it was so worth it! The only problem we had, which was out of control of the hotel was an family that decided our room was going to be there new home! We did make mention of this but unfortunately we were just unlucky in not getting rid of them. The room itself was more than enough for my mom and I. This trip was a belated bday gift as she no longer lives in California. I love that they have taken on what looks to be like the new "thing" in having large refillable bottles of all the toiletry products. Made packing a lot easier. The restaurant was alao quite delicious. Although it's very off putting having the head still attached the rock cod was absolutely divine!! Big enough to split as well. All in all a great stay! I will absolutely be coming back and hopefully that family of has moved on!! read more

This was our first stay at the little river inn and it was an absolute dream. We got the rooms that had a balcony ocean view and the views were amazing. We checked in on a Friday and caught a beautiful sunset. The check in process was seamless and our rooms were ready earlier than expected. During our time at the inn, we had breakfast and enjoyed the four course Thanksgiving meal They had ample options for breakfast and really tasty coffee. Their thanksgiving course meal was amazing. We started off with a pumpkin/butternut squash bisque, an amazing bleu cheese, apple, candied walnuts with cider vinaigrette salad, a guinea hen plate with veggie medley and ended with an amazing pumpkin bread pudding (I still dream of that meal). The town of Mendocino is minutes away with lots to explore. read more

We have been coming here for years. You really can't beat the views. It has become more expensive but we felt it was worth it. But be careful if you bring dogs. It's "pet friendly" at a premium. Many of the dogs I've seen are on the smaller side. We have a lab and a retriever, and take them to the beach. There is a nightly fee for each dog, but we were charged for an extra night as well, because our room had to "air out" an extra day. This was explained to me in advance of our trip in February. No specifics were given. We certainly didn't trash the room. So we brought our own towels, top sheets, water proof pads, an area rug and things to wipe up the floor. I politely emailed them afterwards to see if our efforts made a difference, and ask if we would continue be charged this additional fee. No response. I called and was told that we would always be charged this. So it was $365 on top of the standard dog fee of $300. No more inn, bar, or restaurant for us. read more

Excellent stay at the Little River Inn for 4 nights in the White Cottage - the pics are from the back deck - you can sit and just listen to the ocean pounding against the rocks and watch the sunset and a sky full of stars! We also dined at the restaurant one night for dinner - service and food were excellent! And we ordered room service which was also great! With stunning views and a lovely room, we thought we were in for a treat. However we were soon infested with small ants. They were everywhere. When we complained we were told "sorry about that" with no offer to fix the issue, switch our room, or compensate us. Furthermore the shower had terrible water pressure, so there was that. Also be warned the bar and adjoining restaurant were overpriced and of poor quality. We had two bowls of mediocre clam chowder and paid 40 dollars. We are happy to pay for service and quality, not for ants and tasteless soup. Skip this inn and find a place in Mendocino! read more

Some Pros first; Great view (not a private view), food was good (drinks in the bar, dessert and breakfast) took a very long time to be served and the dining room was FREEZING for breakfast. Cons; Expensive rooms for an ordinary room, bed was rock hard and leaned to one side. We're definitely not fans of having the mini-fridge, coffee maker and wine glasses in the bathroom. Place in nice location but should not be listed as dog friendly. The cabin was about a mile south of the main hotel. There was a great view from our room. The main issue is because the room was dog friendly it had ripped carpet and a badly damaged door blind. Another issue was the door lock was almost impossible to operate. Just got back from a long weekend at Little River Inn. This was our first visit - but many friends had recommended to us over the years. Our stay was wonderful. The room was very comfortable and the views spectacular. We had room service breakfasts each morning which were delicious. We only had dinner one night at the restaurant but we loved it. We golfed one day as well - beautiful course. Our only minor issue was a light that was shining on our back porch at night and staff had that addressed within minutes. Such rich history and warm friendly staff. Amazing that this is a family owned place. Hoping to visit again very soon. read more

I know this hotel prides itself on being old and quaint, but you can move to the 21st century and still keep the charm. The room smelled old. The shower was super uncomfortable: the jet was going right over my head. The window shutters were all broken and let all the light in in the morning. Seems like they haven't invested in maintenance in decade. The restaurant was horrible, clearly preying on people being a captive audience. Every ingredient was the absolute cheapest you could find. Hot chocolate was made from powder, and I think they only put half a package in the cup, it was so thin! Vegetables in my curry were from frozen Costco packages, the rice was re-heated. This was like left over dorm food for the price of a steakhouse. I will never stay there again. read more

Wow, what a wonderful experience. We went there for a 94th Birthday celebration out of sentimentality and ended up having not only a good meal but a surprisingly good meal. The clam chowder was the best I have ever had with clams on the shell presented in the bowl in a way I have never seen before. The spices were perfect . The fish and chips were fresh and delicious and the local cod was presented head to tail and my husband ate the whole thing! What also made this evening even better was our waiter. His service and style was just what you always are hoping for on a nice dinner out. This place would be three stars anywhere else, but the options in Mendocino are few and far between. The room was dated and just blah, except for the amazing view. The bathroom was huge, but the shower was only swiped with the bulk, gym style dispensers for shampoo, conditioner and soap. The downstairs rooms are rough, if you have people upstairs walking around in the middle of the night, like we experienced. You can hear them flush the toilet. People who run the place are very nice, and it's great to have a bar, restaurant, and a golf course on site. All in all, it's a special place because of the view and the amenities. I've been going to Little River in for 60 years.,We used to go for dinner when is it was about $7.50 for 3 courses. Salad, abalone and berry cobbler. It was GREAT. For the last 20 years I would go up with 5 other couples and all stay in rooms next to each other and bring cocktails and bits to snack on and enjoy the glorious view. We went up sand few months ago and the old place is really showing wear. No more complimentary creams and soaps... just cheap bottles attached to the wall dispensing minute amounts . AND the prices have DOUBLED. So not worth close to $375 a night. The food is OK but used to be much better.?" I guess Covid really affected them. We have stayed at dozens of places up and down the coast over the years and have always wanted to stay at the Little River Inn. This is now our favorite spot. We stayed in a Traditional room with the most amazing view. 2 queen beds and a table in a moderately sized space. Bathroom was larger than average and included a mini fridge and Keurig coffee machine. Staff was courteous and extremely attentive. After the first night the manager checked on us to see how things were, my only complaint was that the bed was a little firm to my liking and within hours they had placed a foam topper on the bed! It made a world of difference for me. 5 plus stars to the staff! We will most definitely stay here again. read more

This was our second time to Little River Inn. We paid extra for the beautiful view and for our dog. We were surprised to see no toiletries. Instead they have these rediculous dispensers that hung in the shower and near sinks, that dispensed a tiny amount at a time. The shower spray was extremely weak. The tub with jet's directions stated only to use their soaps which weren't supplied. Their restaurant served me raw pork chops and when I mentioned it to the manager, he very rudely said this is how they are cooked. Meal included a 20% gratuity and over priced for raw pork chops. Day of checkout, I got a text at 8:07am, checkout time was 10am. to just leave keys in room and they would mail invoice. Noooo. We went down in person to check out and our bill was incorrect. This place has aged and extremely expensive for what you get. I only recommend for the view. We won't be going back. read more

I've been visiting Little River Inn for 6+ years, but unfortunately the property is in decline. Room prices have increased over 50%, but some of the rooms are in desperate need of renovation. Management seem to be attempting to cut costs with no cleaning during your stay, and a degrading of cleaning products in the bathroom. During our last stay, we pointed out several areas that could be improved - and were met with criticism. Sadly we won't return until the property is renovated. read more

The audio and video in room is frustrating at best! Constant pixilation while trying to watch DNC. Maybe it is unavoidable but are they being cheap on provider? No cell service! No daily maid service! Wait staff at breakfast and dinner are wonderful. Food is good and location perfect. Coming here since 1971, and it is still worth going to but an edge is gone and expensive for a less than an amazing experience. read more

This was our first time staying at the Little River Inn. We stayed at the Mallory House in the Hannah Madison room. Upon arrival we had a difficult time unlocking the door. The lock actually had a loose tumbler that had to be moved out a bit to unlock the door. The room smelled musty upon entering. Looking around we noticed the blinds on the door had been chewed by a dog that previously had stayed in the unit. The carpet by the door going into the bathroom was frayed and ruined by a dog. There were stains on the carpet from previous spills. Communication from the staff seems to be lacking. Since this is the only dog friendly unit it would be nice to have a poop station on the outside of the building. I picked up many piles of others dogs waste when I was picking up my after my dog. This unit needs updating and was not worth the price charged per night. I will say the nice thing was the hot tub on the deck. Needless to say we probably will not be coming back to Little River Inn. read more

This is a review for the golf course only. The course isn't bad but I was hoping for more of a view of the ocean. The grounds were clean and ok to play on but not much of a view of the ocean at all. I did love that ocean breeze. That was lovely. It is a 9 hole course, but you can complete 18 if you play it twice. Worth an afternoon to go out and play if you're free and in the area - But nothing to go out of your way to go see. read more

This is one of our go to place to relax and be on the coast. We have stayed in many different rooms and all are nice...we have been bringing our Aussie the last few times and love the rooms and accommodations for fur babies...The dining experience had changed a bit since Covid but is getting back to normal. The food is delicious! The location is also perfect! Close to beaches, a little market across the street, dining and shopping minutes away in Mendocino and some pretty good Wineries along the way too. The service and staff are the best! They really do a good job of making your stay memorable...going back soon! read more

Can I give them more than 5 stars? I've already recommended this place word of mouth to all my friends looking for a quarantine getaway, for when your place is just a little too suffocating and you're all shelter in place-d out. Our cottage was very clean and LRI takes all safety precautions when you arrive at the lobby to pick up your room key and welcome package as well as when you enter your room. Make Sure you know exactly where you're going and check with the staff before you leave because you might not have cell reception on your GPS. The cottage we had had a gorgeous view of the ocean and your own hot tub. The room was spacious and the area is serene and peaceful you won't want to leave. I highly morning breakfast room service and to get the cheddar bacon biscuit, I wish I could take some home. Nearby is a beautiful botanical garden that was more like a big walking trail into a forest that over looked cliffs and had big trees and a vegetable garden. Theres also a Taco Bell nearby for those creature comforts. A little drive away are the beautiful redwoods, my first time thoeee and first time out in months I never knew I was a nature person but those sights really had me SHOOK. Don't believe the hype!! This place is overpriced and rundown. Hard beds, broken fireplace, cracked tiles and lots of rust in bathroom. The owner has cheaped out on lots of things. They don't even have real maple syrup at breakfast! One day we ordered room service because we had somewhere to be at a certain time. It was supposed to arrive between 8:30-9. (We ordered it the night before.) By 9:10 it still hadn't arrived. I called and they finally sent it up without all the items included in the description. Lots of excuses from employees. I would have given only one star but the view was spectacular. read more

The bathroom was fine, but could use some updating (223). The dining room is lovely. The wait staff was attentive but not hovering (thank you Ella and Bella). The ceasar salad, clam chowder, and fish & chips were all delicious. For breakfast we highly recommended the fantastic bread pudding french toast with the strawberry purée, you will not be disappointed. The grounds are well cared for with an abundance of beautiful flowers and of course the ocean view is without compare. You can't beat the location and the breathtaking views here. The rooms are comfortable and clean. There are mini fridges and coffee makers in the rooms, complete with coffee and cream/sugar. They also refill it each day. The toiletries are actually great quality. I loved the way my hair felt after using the shampoo and conditioner. They also use sustainable packaging for the bath products. Each room has an ocean view and balcony. You can listen to the waves from your bed each morning and night. Each morning, I enjoyed my coffee in a rocking chair with the ocean view. There aren't many better ways to start your morning. The staff is friendly and attentive. Checking in and out was quick and easy. You can order room service throughout the day and if you put your order out for breakfast (before 7am), they'll bring it to your room in the morning during the time you choose. The bar/restaurant was great. People who aren't even staying at the hotel come here just for the food and the view. A beach and kayaking are just steps away at the beach you can see from your balcony. You can spend your entire time within 500 feet of your room and feel that you've had the real Mendocino experience. read more
