I had my dads funeral serviced in your Chapel back in 2021. I was happy with the service but I am needing assistance with paper work( consular mutuary certificate) to take him back to my country. I was told personally by the owner that they can provide assist in this process. However did not realize it would cost 500 dollars for it. I did the processing and it is not near 500 dollars for it. The consular mutuary certificate is just 25 dollars, the Burial transit permit is 12 dollars. Then your assistant told me that they could not process it because the crematory office got closed or no longer in service and they will not give me the request. I feel disappointed that I am being coerced to pay that 500 dollars in order to get the assistance that we need. Even the office of vital statistics was shocked hearing that it cost 500 dollars for it. read more

After my wife was released to go home on hospice I was recommended to set up with whatever funeral homes we wished to use. After doing my research and looking at reviews I was very pleased with Heritage Oaks. When I called I talked to Monica who was very helpful and set up an appointment with Wendy. When meeting with Wendy she was very compassionate and helpful guiding me through the process. My wife and I always loved Monterey area and wished for our ashes to be spread in the bay. So she recommended a new item which looked like a pillow in whatever color you wished. She explained that the pillow would dissolve in the water. So this was good for the environment ! Three and a half weeks later my wife passed away. With Bristol Hospice-Sacramento everything was set up between the two agencies. The two people who picked up my wife were very friendly, respectful and compassionate! Heritage handled getting the death certificates, notify Social Security and getting two copies of the permits needed for the cremation. When I picked up her ashes they had it arranged with beautiful flowers and everyone there was very friendly, professional and compassionate! Our mom passed in her home on Saturday of Labor Day weekend. We called Heritage Oaks Memorial Chapel and were pleased by the facts that: 1) someone answered our call and 2) they were able to provide the service on a busy weekend, even during the pandemic. (Our family couldn't even find lodging that Saturday - that's how hectic things were). The person who answered our call was a co-owner, Jim, and he had such a soothing phone demeanor. We made calls to other mortuaries after our initial call with Jim, but they didn't match that first call to Heritage Oaks: we either received an answering service, or they couldn't provide a pickup due to distance or lack of service, or they were wishy-washy about what they would permit due to the pandemic (capacity, masks, hours of service, etc.). Heritage Oaks was not like that. Heritage Oaks was there for us from the moment we made our first call, through the process of selecting services for a our contract, to the day of setting up the memorial service. Yes, there were minor issues, such as corrections needed in the intake forms regarding the deceased (which is why they ask clients to double-check!), and they were very busy at times (understandably), but they always answered our call. Chris, the other co-owner, was wonderful to work with, helping with details about setup, brochures, and anything else that came up. When your family is grieving and going through a difficult time, having the funeral home make things easier for you makes such a difference. Family who attended the memorial were impressed by the brightness and openness of the chapel funeral home. We were able to easily hook up our laptop to display a memorial video (that our family created) onto a screen up front (my only critique is I think a bigger screen is needed for the room), and the facility had a kitchen where we prepared flower bouquets. I've been to funeral homes that had multiple congregation rooms, which can be chaotic and bleak. Heritage Oaks has one large congregation room, a lobby with seating, as well as more private seating near restrooms. Within the congregation room, there was ample space to lay out tables for food as well as a memorial table. After the memorial, I received a call from one of their other team members, Graham, about a lost watch that was found in the room (belonging to my mom and was worn by my daughter). That personal outreach reminded me yet again why Heritage Oaks was our choice. I'm grateful that when I think about this experience, the loss of my mom, the funeral, and all the logistics, I only recall good things. I thank the Heritage Oaks team for a pleasant experience during a tough time, and highly recommend their facility and their team to anyone else planning the final rites for a loved one. read more

There is nothing more difficult to do in life than to say "goodbye" to a loved one. Our father passed suddenly in November 2020 and the reality of his presence no longer available physically has rendered nothing by pain and heartache. Our father "Leo" was more than a doting father, loyal husband and friend *but* a True Hero / a Bestfriend to many that were blessed to have known him. We looked frantically, in the midst of the Pandemic, a week before Thanksgiving, for a place to hold his Memorial Service. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HERITAGE OAKS TO MY WORST ENEMY. Jim could not even make a simple call to the coroner to make sure they were moving forward with DNA identification of my father. We called him so many times on the status of this, and he said he could not get a hold of them. When I called the Alameda county coroner, they picked up on the first ring. It took my family just under one minute to do the work that Jim couldn't do in a month. Jim has caused my family and I so much grief. My sister and I had to fire Jim and go through another cremation service, just the thing we wanted just after loosing our beloved father. We requested a refund check for my grandmother who paid for the arrangements, and the first time he sent it to us addressed to her but with the wrong last name. We had to again make him send her the correct check. Well he sent her another check and changed one word in the address. For the third time we had request the check again made to the right address. We finally received the correct check after Jim tried to scam my grandmother three times. He thought he could get away with scamming an elderly woman. I am absolutely disgusted with Jim's undignified actions, and I really hope readers take this review to heart and stay clear from this man! He could sure take our money, but couldn't lift his finger to make one simple phone call to make sure the process was being taken care of. He took advantage of two young women (I am 22 and my sister 28) who recently lost their father, and an elderly woman who lost her son to a horrific accident, for his monetary gain. read more

I don't know who wrote the previous five star review, but DON'T believe it. It sounds to me like it was written by one of the owners or owner's relatives/spouses. When my wife passed away, I made the unfortunate mistake of going here. The staff here just "Doesn't get it." Without going into all of the dreaded details, this was a terrible experience. While there to make arrangements for my late wife (I brought my mom and dad), Heritage Oaks solicited them for business right then and there. Jim, who works there, who said he would deliver my wife's remains on a certain day and time, chose to just blow it off. He gave me the excuse that "We just really got busy today". Only through repeated calls, one of which was answered by an answering service, was I able to get my Wife's remains delivered to me. This is not the kind of turmoil you want to be dealing with after losing a loved one. It's been almost three years since my wife's passing and they still continue to "Farm me" with their ad campaigns to drum up more business, asking me to make an appointment to make arrangements for other loved ones I may still have in my life. Do yourself a favor and don't make the most difficult of situations worse by going here. If it costs a few dollars more to go somewhere else, in hindsight, I would have considered it money well spent. The events listed above are really only the tip of the iceberg. There was NOTHING professional, private or dignified about how they run their business. I'm sorry the previous rater had such a disappointing experience. I'll have to say mine was more like the first rating. My husband died on Father's Day this year after a very long hospice, and I had time to notify Heritage well in advance of the anticipated need. When the nursing home contacted Heritage, they immediately responded, and the next morning our family was able to sit down with Mr. Beeding and make final arrangements. There was NO pressure to buy anything. Actually, we opted for cremation, which was the original plan, and we had our memorial three months later at the clubhouse where I live. I have also been to a presentation of their regarding grief and dealing with the loss of a loved one. They are sensitive and caring. The incompetence of Heritage Oaks Memorial chapel has cost me a lot of money. Further, our pain and suffering has been aggravated and the stress elevated due to the fact that Jim was unable to secure death certificates in a timely manner. We had been waiting over 4 weeks for a death certificate. At around week 3 or 4, after asking specifically for Jim to update us on the status of DNA identification, we received no update. Jim rebuffed my my questions. Weeks later, we gave up and proceeded to call the Coroner in the county of death - they immediately informed us of the issue that was slowing down the process and we took care of the roadblock ourselves. We had to fire Heritage Memorial Oaks, just the thing you want to do when you are mourning the unexpected death of your parent. I had to go through the horrible process of arranging for cremation services for my beloved father for a second time. Ron surpassed any expectation that I might have had in regards to thoroughly understanding our needs, concerns, and guidance when my beloved father passed. Not only all details were taken care of but he drove my father to So Cal for graveside military services at the family plot. I had only to handle some details with the receiving Forest Lawn and even then Ron worked with them so that when we arrived all was taken care and executed smoothly.
