So, I try this place again today, after a good many years. Gee, what a disappointment. Here's why: Salsa: They serve this salsa with what? Crackers. Never seen or heard of such a thing. Baby back ribs: dry as heck and broke apart like a roast texture. Using electric smokers and no real smoke or rub taste. The BBQ sauce, which I hate to use. It's KC Masterpiece. They're hot is KC Masterpiece with some likely jalapeño juice and pieces. Potatoes: Hard undercooked, under seasoned potato chunks. Really lousy. Au jus: I tried a side, just see what it was like. Some pre-fab lousy au jus. I love old joints like this. But this place is way past its prime. Hardly worth a trip for lunch; let alone dinner. read more

I've been hunting around Fayetteville all week and finally found a great dining experience. Herman's looks like crack house and claims to be a hole in the wall, but neither description is accurate. Food is great. Wait staff is very attentive and sassy. Although they wouldn't tell me what made the garlic sauce so special. I ordered a steak, but got an a-la-carte rib to try. I picked the rib up and it fell apart in my hand because it was so tender. Steak was a perfectly cooked medium rare and melted in my mouth. Everything slowed down around me while I was savoring the flavor in my mouth. Only dessert option was a basket of lollipops. Great experience over all. If you're ever near Fayetteville it's a must. We stopped by mid-afternoon before a Razorbacks' football game. The building looks pretty interesting and the restaurant boasts being open since 1964. I assumed since "Rib House" is in the name, that the ribs were good. However, the ribs were horrible. They clearly were not smoked and appeared to be cooked in an oven with no seasoning. After the meal, I looked around the outside of the building and there was no real wood like or visible smoker, only an outbuilding with what appeared to be a standard oven in it. The burger was ok, but nothing spectacular. It tasted like something one would cook at home in a frying pan. They serve salsa with saltines as an appetizer, which was a bit of a weird combination to me. If you are looking for great ribs, look elsewhere as Herman's Rib House is quite deceptive. read more

I have heard a lot of this legendary place so I was finally able to get to take the family. Service was great and the building was charming but the food.. Miserable.For a rib house not only did I have to search for rib plate(because there is apparently one option) they were bland and tasteless and dry and I like dry rub ribs. Saltine crackers and something I think they called salsa. More like a tomato sauce. We ordered the shrimp and it tasted ok but they seemed like pre cooked. Lollie pops for dessert too.seems like for such a busy place they trying to save cost and class.I think for the hype and the price it was just disappointing. We took some friends of ours to Herman's on the Friday night of the Ole Miss football game. Our waitress was Carrie, who actually owns the place. She didn't mention that until well into our meal. I had told my friends about the salsa and saltines. That didn't sound great to them until they tried them. Also I always recommend the filet. My wife and I split one and we both had plenty. It was cooked perfectly. Herman's is a place that many parents have taken their families to on Razorback weekends. Our visit definitely lived up to my memories. Don't waste your time going here for ribs, they were dry and about a week old and tasted stale and heated in the microwave!! There is no way they were fresh ribs. Also, who puts warm onions and peppers on a cold salad?? Just bad. The menu needs to change and take the ribs off if they are not fresh. This place was sooo good! First of all, the atmosphere is so adorable... nice and cozy and welcoming. On to the food... we started with the rib appetizer and they did not disappoint! They were fall off the bone tender and would be good without any sauce, but I liked the addition of the spicy sauce. Because it was just two of us and the ribs were filling, we decided on the 5 oz bacon wrapped filet. WOW It had a perfect sear and was melt in your mouth tender. Make sure to ask for a side of garlic sauce to dip it in. It's totally worth the $3 charge in my opinion and they sell jars of this stuff. For sides, we went with mushrooms, coleslaw, and ordered an extra side of mac and cheese. The mushrooms and mac and cheese were standard, but a great addition to the steak. I have to admit that I wasn't a big fan of the coleslaw. It had some type of seed that was a bit too much for my tastebuds. All of this with sodas and a glass of house red wine and we were left with a bill of less than $100.... not too shabby! We will definitely be back next time we're in town. HRH, is one of the best steak restaurants in Fayetteville. Herman's is located in a small White House on College Ave. don't let the outside of the restaurant fool you. When you walk in you will be greeted by a friendly staff. The head chief is named Nick and he has been working at Herman's for as long as I can remember. Nick is one of the best chiefs in NWA. I had the filet mignon and the steak was cooked perfectly and the potatoes are amazing. If you like ribs (pork or beef) get the ribs. The ribs are some of the best I have ever had. I would put the ribs up against any KC or Memphis establishment any day. They have a nice little patio in the back. Do yourself a favor and checkout Herman's. read more

This place is a joke, $110 dollar check and I would of rather had something that cost a 1/3 of the price. Starts with serving saltine crackers with salsa? The steaks cost 40+ dollars and only come with hasbrowns (also gross) ordered my steak medium rare came back at least well done was so dry took 4 bites and was done. The salads that come are iceburg lettace and are nothing special, I do not get how a place can get off charging someone over 100 for a check and be bottom class on their food and their service. We took the advice of a local and went here after a football game. I will refrain from mentioning the wait, atmosphere, etc so this is purely about the food. We are a group of 3 guys who enjoy a great steak and BBQ. We thought we found both in one place. Salsa and crackers was interesting. We got the full rack of ribs next since they are the namesake of the restaurant. I bit into the first bite of the ribs and it sucked all the moisture out of my mouth. No seasoning, dry, and tasted like they were cooked in an oven. Fell completely off the bone but not in a good way. The waitress said you either love or hate them, which seems odd for ribs, but we told her we were in the hate category (in the nicest way possible). The 40 oz ribeye was so uneventful I forgot I ate it. No seasoning, drenched in either soy or W sauce. Obviously Choice meat at best. Slaw was the best thing we had. Mushrooms were cooked in same sauce as the steak. I wouldn't write a review if the steak was $50, but it was $100. Absolute worst sit down meal I've ever had. The meal was uneventful at best. The only positive I walked away with was that it nutritionally sustained our life until the next day. This place was the highest priced hunger bandaid I've eaten at. If you dislike your mother in law, send her to Herman's. Obviously, would not recommend. read more

It's been open since 1964 and looks like the interior hasn't been updated much since then. Server was friendly. Menu is all over the place. I had the three rib plate ($11) with hash browns (which are really cubed, fried potatoes). Ribs were tender, with a light seasoning and no sauce (they have a mild and a hot BBQ sauce in bottles at the table if you want to add them). I didn't taste any smoke flavor (not sure how they cook them). The cheese steak sandwich ($15) was odd to me. It's not chopped or shredded ribeye, but cubed pieces. It's cooked with peppers and onions in some sort of a brown sauce. The flavor is good, but it's not like any cheese steak I've ever had, and certainly not what most would think of when they envision a "traditional" cheese steak. We ordered a "premium side" of a bowl of Mac and cheese, which was a $4(!) up charge. It was creamy, but didn't have a ton of flavor. I've read their steaks are supposed to be good, but the place didn't impress me enough to interest me in a return visit. read more

We had two rib eyes and a filet and they were both excellent. The service was great and they had a packed house. The Mac and cheese was way above average. The place is a bit noisy and you can watch several tv's. This is a very homey place in an older house. A little expensive but still delicious. The crackers with salsa was a little different but good. They have amazing steaks! My husband and I had the peel and eat shrimp as an appetizer and it was very good. they server it with a dipping sauce that is outstanding. They also serve crackers and this really tasty salsa before your meal. I'd like to buy that salsa by the gallon! The ambiance is weird. The reviews are all over the place. It could be because Herman's is all over the place. Yes, there's salsa served w/crackers rather than chips. That's weird. Then you ask, why do they serve salsa in the first place? It's a rib place. Or is it? They have steaks, bbq chicken and....omelettes. (??). Hash browns are really small, fried potatoes (& not very good). I had the 1/2 bbq chicken for lunch. Tender and fell off the bone, but nothing special. Interior is crowded to the point you wonder if you're trapped at your table. Hope there's never a fire. I appreciate "tradition" but think service & good food takes precedence. And I would almost - almost! - dock them a star for this, but I had one of the best dang meals I've ever had in my entire life there last week, so I can forgive them for not having ribs as good as you can find in Memphis. Herman's is a Fayetteville staple. It's in an unassuming white house with the paint peeling on the outside. The parking lot is gravel. The inside has wood panel walls covered in Razorback and Arkansas memorabilia and is really clean. The demographic dining there seemed to be men wearing polos and ballcaps and their boutique-dressed dates who drank white wine. Husband and I were greeted immediately and seated immediately even though there was a crowd in the restaurant, and once we were seated, our drink orders were taken immediately. We just got soft drinks, but I was happy to see they had gluten-free ciders available. The wait staff was prompt and attentive all evening without being in our business. We ordered a half rack of ribs as an appetizer and got them quickly. The ribs were a solid "fine" - nothing to write home about, but nothing I minded eating. Then for the meal. I ordered their philly cheese steak without the bun. Y'ALL. It was this wonderful cheesy, creamy mess of bits of steak and onions. Phillies are usually kinda "meh" as far as meat goes - 90% of the time you order them in this region, the meat is stringy - but this was some high quality steak. Even my husband, who LOVES Herman's steaks and ordered a steak that night, was a little envious of my dish. Seriously, this was a top-five meal. For dessert... they brought us a basket of blow pops and tootsie pops to choose from. Not fancy, but quirky and fun. I have been wanting to try this place for several years. Went last night for a steak - I got the ribeye my son ordered the t-bone and his girlfriend had ribs. I loved the feel of the place. The salsa and crackers was quirky but ok. The salad needed to be dried off the dressing would not stick on the salad. The offered side of "hash browns" were preprepared seasoned fries from the freezer. My steak was ok - not great. My sons steak was cooked perfect for him and he liked it and his girlfriend liked her ribs. It was an experience I enjoyed - but will not repeat it. read more

Had heard that this place was legendary, and had the best prime rib in town. Well, the prime rib was good not excellent, and for $55 it should be excellent. Saltines and salsa is not my idea of a good appetizer, the "famous" mushrooms also not excellent and the hashbrowns my husband got were burnt. The ice berg salad also a disappointment. And, my husbands bourbon was served in a plastic cup. Do not waste your money. There definitely has to be better steak and prime rib in Northwest Arkansas. read more
