I made my way onto the Greenway via the Kohl's trailhead, which is an entrance found at the back end of the Kohl's department store parking lot. It's not glamorous, but gets the job done. At this entry point you are directed under, around and onto the Bob Sheehan Memorial Bridge. As you walk this path, you are next to the Stones River, as well as Lebanon Pike. Once you get beyond the immediate area, you finally hit the trails. The trails are a collection of pathways from wide roads between the river and neighborhoods, to slimmer walkways in the woods. There is not one identity for the trails here, and they seem kind of pathed together. But even so, they get the job done for those who enjoy walking, jogging or biking. Additionally, Ravenwood Park can be found just a half mile or so down the trail from the Kohl's trailhead. While I didn't not explore this park, it too has an interesting history. There is a lot of construction happening along large stretches of the trails, mostly that of new neighborhoods. This takes away from the nature aspect of the greenway, but I get it... Overall, the Stones River Greenway Trails get the job done. I prefer other stretches of the greenway such as those near Two Rivers, but when in the area or just needing a change of scenery, this portion of the trail is a decent option.

We've driven past this park numerous times, but never officially stopped to visit, until today! The…read moreentrance for the park is right behind a Dairy Queen drive-thru which can act as a bonus treat for walking this loop a few times. There's a creek that runs alongside of the walking trail and a small grouping of trees at the end of the loop. These offer some shade and two swinging benches to take a quick break from the summer heat. Beyond that this trail is mostly in the sun, but stays flat the entire way. It's great for running, dog walking or teaching kids how to ride a bike away from traffic. There is an open field area that I guess you could have a picnic on, but you're right next to Mt. Juliet rod so there's a lot of noise traffic noise. Plus there are also two wetland sections that I'm sure have a ton of mosquitos. Maybe just get in a few quick laps here and take off. According to my phone, one lap around is 2,500 steps. Get into it!

The trail is mostly flat with just a few small hills, so it feels very accessible for people of all ages and fitness levels. The views of the lake are beautiful, and the bridges you get to walk or run over add a really nice touch. I went in January when it was cooler, and it was not crowded at all, super peaceful and relaxing. Parking was free, which is always a win, and there are bathrooms and a water bottle refill station on site. There's also a park ranger station and a boardwalk that goes out to the lake (though it was closed when I went). Other visitors mentioned they sometimes see wild turkeys and other animals along the trail. No wildlife sightings for me this time, but still an amazing experience. If you're looking for a scenic, low-stress running or walking spot, this place is absolutely worth a visit!

This little park is right on the Cumberland river and is a great way to spend a few hours, catch an outdoor nap, or even use one of their patio bbq areas for a cookout. There's is plenty of parking here and a large area for launching your boat if you need to get out on the water. There's a large covered area with tables for large parties and plenty of trees with shade. There isn't a designated playground for kids that I've seen, but this area is pretty large. Getting cabin fever? Shutes Recreation Park is a great way to get some fresh air.

Our dogs love coming to this park, and so do we! It's the perfect size -- not too big where you'll…read morelose your dog in plain sight or have to chase them around a huge park if they don't always come when called, but there's still ample space for your dog to run around. There's a fountain inside and outside of the park, and poop bags are provided along the fence. There are also a few benches and even a picnic table in the park, so it's really nice for humans to hang out too. The people who come here are friendly and always happy to talk about their dogs. They're mostly good and responsible dog owners. Parking is never a problem either (though I'll say I've only ever come on weekdays), and it's just a few yards to the fence of the dog park. The only thing is that this park is a mixed large and small breed dog park. Most of the dogs are on the medium or large size, but you'll sometimes get VERY small dogs, so owners and dogs alike have to be very careful at times, especially when the pups are running around chasing each other. I also noticed that some people bring small children here, which is technically against the rules. For the safety of both the dogs and children, I just don't recommend bringing small kids here because you never know how either will react to the other. My sister and I come here often and her neighbors love it too. I highly recommend this place, and it's nice for a walk around the dam as well.

The grounds are absolutely beautiful -- peaceful, well-maintained, and rich with history. Touring the mansion really brings the 1800s to life, and the guides do an excellent job explaining both the achievements and the complexities of Andrew Jackson's legacy. I appreciated that the presentation didn't shy away from the harder parts of history, which made the experience feel honest and educational. Walking the property, seeing the gardens, and visiting Jackson's tomb gave the visit a reflective and meaningful feel. You can easily spend a few hours exploring without feeling rushed. Whether you're a history buff or just looking for something unique to do outside of downtown Nashville, The Hermitage is well worth the trip. Educational, scenic, and thoughtfully presented.

Established 1965, with 650 acres, Peeler Park has paved walking/jogging paths, hiking trails, horse…read moretrails, a model airplane field, and a boat launch. The paths cumulate in over 16 miles, so absolutely note the map. The land was originally the farmland of E. N. Peeler and his family, and was purchased in 1963 by the parks board for $750 an acre. Originally the plan was to really develop the land and create a golf course, but a neighbor private golf course complained about the competition. Instead, it remained wild land. In 1969, the next door Sun Valley Swim Club was purchased and the land added to the existing land, bringing it to its total size that it is at today. They used the pool leftover from the swim club for about fifteen years, finally destroying it in the late 1980s. The land was contemplated for use for a landfill, as one was needed and Metro owned the land anyways, in the early 1990s. This idea was snuffed by annoyed locals in the area. After the landfill idea was dismissed, the boat launch was added for $250K. In the late 1990s, early 2000s, some Nashvillians tried to get the land declared a wildlife sanctuary, an effort that failed. When that failed, a different sect of Nashvillians tried again to get a golf course on the land again- another effort that failed. In 2009, another section of adjacent land- Taylor Farm- was purchased and added to the park land. One of my favorite parts of this park, however, is the fact that the parking lot is stuffed with feral cats, that are apparently fed by the locals and are harmless. Watching them from a distance (although allergic to cats), I found myself charmed.
