The front desk staff is amazing and very accommodating! There is a hot coffee/tea bar in the lobby. Upon arrival, prior to check in, the hotel has a storage closet when our bags can be stored until we checked in. There is also a bathroom and a shower room available in the lobby. We stayed in one of the cottages which is a very efficient room. 2 beds, a bathroom with a toilet and a shower stall. The sink is in the room, which I am in favor of because I don't like my toothbrush and make up stuff in the same room as the toilet. Tucked away in a small corner is the microwave and a mini fridge. The tv sits on top of the larger dresser drawer. The room is straight to the point. The location of the hotel is great too because it is only a block away from Vons and even less to go to the Metropole Shops which is across the street from the beach. Owner mark called and said what I had said was fabricated and he did not believe me. He did not try to make anything better. He offered no discount and no help. Just like the "managers" he has working his hotel. I requested the owner contact me last Sunday and waited till this Wenesday before I posted my review. This morning after my review I receive a voicemail finally, not to apologize and try to fix it, but to let me know he is putting me on the no rent list and that he hopes I have a good life. That's the attitude that the kids he hires to run his establishment had that made me wait from 9 am to 3:45 pm to get gum, black stuff off the floors and clean towels and sheets, in my room. DONE. Recently visited Catalina and brought the Groupon for the Hermosa Hotel. Upon arrival they have storage for your belongings and take your number for when your room is ready. We were pleasantly surprised that we were upgraded to a kitchenette at no cost. The room was cozy and had good air flow through the room. Air conditioning units were recently added to the rooms, but it wasn't necessary. The water pressure was surprisingly heavy for a hotel - we loved it! We checked out and still had a few hours on the island. We were invited to use the storage room and advised that we could utilize the ladies shower room before getting onto our boat later that day. This hotel was amazing! The staff was super sweet and kind, our room was clean and cooled before we checked in, and there was perfect amenities. Pots, pans, utensils, and a cooking top was provided, along with a fridge and microwave. Our cottage was beautiful and clean. We were able to check in early and check out late - staff allowed us to store our luggage in their storeroom and our perishables in their fridge, which was massively helpful as the ferry wouldnt leave for several more hours. I wanted to like this place but I left feeling it was misrepresented. The pros: It is a short walk to the beach, looks newly painted and with good light. The bed was comfortable. We were going to the museum and the casino and it was ideal. The AC works and one of the desk clerks is really nice. The cons: There was mention of the ability of sound to carry and quiet hours but I don't think even the guest-neighbors knew how thin those cottage walls are! And we could hear everyone outside, even with "indoor voices". We heard the woman in the cottage next to ours SNEEZE; our windows were closed. There's a kitchen but no plates or bowls, silverware or basic items you'd think would be there. (You can request a pot or pan from the desk and there was a can opener and a corkscrew on the floor of the kitchen cabinet). I found that surprising. The shower is small and there isn't any place to put shampoo or soap. I thought I was getting a room up from the cheaper places I brought the kids to when money was tight but it didn't feel that way. read more

Stayed here only one night with my family. We reserved a jack and jill room and a mini suite w/ full kitchen and sofa sleeper. The jack and jill rooms are very nice, I would recommend them if you need 2 rooms w/ one bath. Very convenient w/ a mini frige, but no AC so summer days/nights can be a bit warm. Open windows and fans made it comfortable enough. 2 of the 3 beds were nice, the 3rd was too soft. Overall these rooms were clean and comfortable. We were told our mini suite would be ready by 3pm, come 6pm it still wasn't cleaned. The manager was very apologetic and offered my family free beer, wine or other refreshments. He also discounted the room and had it cleaned immediately. Overall the room was nice, it had a full kitchen w/ one burner stove, dishes, full refrigerator and small table w/ 2 chairs plus a sleeper sofa. There was no door separating the main bed from kitchen/couch area, but this wasn't a problem for us. The sofa sleeper however, was very uncomfortable. It was at a significant incline such that we had to sleep with our head at the foot of the bed. When we opened it, there was a lot of hair under the couch and no blankets in the room (likely just forgotten in the rush). I noticed the stairs were very dirty when we arrived but the next day they had been vacuumed and looked cleaner. The community balcony was nice to sit outside and have a drink (no covid concerns as it was only my family outside). In my opinion they could definitely step up the cleaning throughout the property but it wouldn't keep me from staying there again. The hotel staff wore masks and had hand sanitizer available for guests. They also designated one door as an entrance and the other as an exit to help with physical distance. I didn't see anyone wiping surfaces to disinfect, but we were also only there in the evening, so it's possible it was done during the day. I would recommend this hotel for the price I think you get a great location and very friendly and helpful staff. Most of the hotels on the island are very old and maintain the original look so if this is known and expected, I think the property is a good choice. read more

Matt really came through when he had to stay another night and matched us on a rate when we had to check out of another hotel. He was very accommodating and friendly! Roger was a friendly lad as well. We also had a pleasant encounter with the manager, Rachel, who allowed us to rinse our inflatable kayaks. Everyone here delivers great customer service. Chose this hotel because it is pet friendly, therefore we didn't have to take our dogs all over the island every time we wanted to go out as long as they are relatively quiet pups and don't cause a noise complaint, so that was a major plus. The room was by far the smallest hotel room I've ever been in with a steep price of $140 for its size, however if you're not staying in your room for most of the time it is perfectly fine. read more

As the eldest sister I was responsible for booking the hotel for our family trip (which i've never done) and ran into my problems. BUT Hermosa Hotel has the best costumer service I've ever received from a hotel. I was so relieved that they made my experience with them positive and worked hard to make sure I was satisfied with my booking experience. My husband and I went here for our baby-moon. We loved how close it was to the beach, bars, and restaurants. We loved Dena! She checked us in at night and knew us by name once we got in. We also spent time at Cock & Brew the little bar inside the hotel. Dena was bartending. Loved that they had multiple beer options and even had non alcoholic beer/ choices. Which was really nice because I drank Non alcoholic Heineken while my husband enjoys the other varieties of beer they had to offer and listening to Dean's stories and felt like I somewhat partake in Avalon's bar fun! Room was just what we needed. AC was turned on so when we got it the room was nice and cold. We had a tv, dresser, fridge, microwave, and an electric stove top. We only used the fridge and tv. Bathroom was small but clean and was just enough space for the weekend. Hotel is also dog friendly which was nice because we could bring our French bulldog. read more

Barely a 3... There are definitely pros and cons about Hermosa Hotel & Cottages. Not sure about calling this a "hotel" as I equate that with a higher standard, but it's so close to town, it's cheap, has it's own charm and a friendly staff. The beds are old and not very comfortable. A comfortable bed would have went a long way in my rating. I really wanted to rate this a 2, but the 3 pros above didn't let me. The bathroom and shower are beyond small. The bathroom seemed like it was an add-on in a small area between buildings. I'm 6'4" and it's really hard to fit into the bathroom and shower. The AC is wall mounted and loud during the night, but it worked. Plan on climbing stairs to access your room and in some of the rooms you have to duck to enter the front door as some of the main doors are only about 5'8" or so. read more

My husband and I stayed here as part of a LivingSocial deal. The deal included the boat ride over for two, two tickets to the Botanic Garden, and two tickets to the Catalina Island Museum, which we later found out backed out of the deal, but the hotel substituted with two drinks tickets good at their in-hotel bar. The only reason I'm giving my stay here three stars is because the staff was amazing. They were nice, accommodating, and polite. When I called to change my boat departure time the staff not only called to make the change for me but they called me back to let me know it was done! You just don't find that kind of customer service anymore. Unfortunately, the hotel itself is more like a camp cabin than a standard hotel. The room we were in was super small with a lumpy, full-size mattress on rollers so when you moved the bed moved. The lumps caused my husband to be higher in the bed than me which was awkward and uncomfortable. The air conditioning turns off automatically after two hours but thankfully we weren't there on a hot night. Because of Island water restrictions, you are charged $5 if you require more than your allotment of towels. The room comes with a small kitchenette but if you leave dirty dishes in the sink you are charged $25. The rooms are in a row so you're sharing a wall with at least one other room. On the other side of the walkway are the other set of rooms. Due to everyone being in such close proximity and the lack of double-paned windows you better hope your temporary neighbors aren't loud because you will hear everything. A couple of good things about the hotel location is that there is a Vons on the same street, and it just a short walk down to the main drag which makes getting around super convenient. While I enjoyed my short vacay I can't see myself staying here again. read more

Just a horrible manager. Because of the General manager lan, me and my cross country team almost had to cancel our trip. I can understand if he wanted to work with us but he jacked up the price so high it was unrealistic. Plus, to add insult to injury, me and my cross country team are in high/middle school so just a bunch of kids wanting to go on a fun team building trip. The General manager lan destroyed my team's spirit and should understand how much this trip means to us. And not to mention the audacity of lan, the General manager, for making the price of our trip 200 more dollars per person witch would be an insane amount of money if you add up all of the kids and the supervisors. And my cross country team isn't crazy, and we are all responsible, plus there are plenty of adults to supervise. The team had been going to this hotel for years and had no problems but because of the General manager lan all of that changed. Lucky one of are coaches found another hotel called glenmore plaza hotel that would take us so if you don't hate kids I would go to glenmore plaza because they support kids getting outside and having some fun with their team. read more

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. Room 43 with 2 queen beds, microwave, little fridge and a roomy shower. I hate little showers so it being roomy was a plus! Checking in was great and our room was even ready a little earlier than planned. Tired from an early morning and having luggage to take up 3 flights of stairs was not something I was wanting to do. There was this young gentleman named Marcus who helped us with a smile and saved the day! We seen Marcus out the next day on his day off and he was so sweet and answered some questions we had. The entire staff was so kind and I wish that I got all the other kind staffs names to let them know how great they are. We stayed in these cute little cottages that are part of the hotel. On the plus side, they are close to the water and are very cute. Ours also came with a small kitchen and there is a Safeway next store. On the negative side, we couldn't get into our room until after 5:00 and climbing the 3 sets of stairs to get into our cottage was hard as both my knees are disabled and very painful. Dishonest, deceitful, condescending manager, and I think I might have caught an STD from the room. One star is significantly too generous for this place but at least one is mandatory in order to write a review. We are frequent travelers to the island, and I have had horrible problems with this hotel before. Several years ago, we checked into this hotel to find our room to be dirtier and nastier than a frat house. However, because of a handful of very sweet, Five-Star employees who made things right, we continued to give the hotel a chance. For a few years, they did a decent job; not great, but decent for what I'd paid for. This year, we returned to the island with friends who had never been to Catalina. Eager to share with them what is to our family The Happiest Place On Earth, I called the Hermosa Hotel and Cottages, told them who I was and explained my concerns from past years, but that I was hopeful the hotel could accommodate both families in a clean room and help me make a good impression of the island with my friends. My two children (19 & 7) and I checked in to the hotel after taking the last ferry to the island, to find that despite noting that we were 3 people, we'd been booked in a room that sleeps 2 max. The sweet and friendly clerk went so far out of her way for us, trying to figure out a way to fix the error, but the only option was one other room that they weren't supposed to be renting out. She apologized, and offered to comp 2 of my 6 room nights as a result. Very generous, excellent customer service, yes. But that room! I didn't want to touch a thing! Filth everywhere, sticky walls, holes in the walls, fixtures falling off the walls, bedspread and furniture from 1979 with tears and holes everywhere - and when my 7 year old turned on the water faucet, he got a face full of bugs that flew out of the drain!! Come on, guys! Really? Naturally, I went to share my concerns with the manager. The response I got from this kid was so insulting and condescending, whoever raised him should be ashamed of themselves. After being blamed for them booking me in the incorrect room and being assured that I was being ridiculously picky in my standards of cleanliness and exaggerating my complaints ("no one has ever said anything before!" Yeah, right. I was the only girl with 6 brothers, and I have 2 sons. I can stand dirty. This room was nasty.) Realizing quickly I wasn't going to be heard by this Child Manager, Matthew, I left him my business card, requesting a phone call from the owner. (I'm still waiting.) Fast forward to check out, and I almost lost it right there in the lobby of this hotel when am handed a bill for 2.25x higher than the rate I was quoted! Yes, I can perform basic arithmetic calculations and no, I'm not exaggerating. More than double! And... wait for it... they'd already charged my credit card! I informed the poor, sweet, kind Nick, who had gone so far out of his way for us in an attempt to make things better (and saw I was about to lose it) that I was horrified, furious and outraged with this manager who had apparently reversed my comped room nights and increased my room rate. I thanked him for being so good to us and doing what he could, but asked him to relay to this "manager" that I expected the adjustments to be made to reflect not just the rate I was quoted and what I was promised. Just got my credit card statement. On our next trip to the island, we might just book the dumpster behind the new Vons. It will be cleaner than this place and they won't try to cheat me out of hundreds upon hundreds of dollars. Still waiting for a call back from the owner. read more

There were some positives and negatives about our stay here. Some positives were that: It was easily accessible and located within the shopping area of Avalon so we were at quick access and distance to the beach, stores, food, etc. It's located right next to Vons so that was a plus. The room was clean and had what we expected: 2 beds, restroom, toilet paper and towels enough for our stay. Also, it was the least expensive hotel available. We also get to leave our luggage in a room with cameras after we check out until we are ready to leave the island. Some downsides included that it was pretty pricey for what we got. Overpriced. The floor of the room is not even for some reason and tilts downward at some point. The restroom is very small. We had to walk up two long flights of stairs and one third small one, which after a long day of walking it's the last thing I want to do. Also, check in was at 3pm and we got to the island in the a.m. so we had to carry our luggage around because we did not know at the time that we could have checked in our bags early. Also, the curtain rod sticks out quite far so we had to hang a towel on the rod to cover up the side in case any peeping toms tried to sneak a peek! Overall, the experience was good. We slept comfortably, room was clean and customer service was great. read more

Location! Location! Location! Quaint and Cute! Great proximity to snorkeling (Casino Point and Lovers Cove-bring mask and fins; surface temps around 73. We saw tons of fish, lobster, abalone, huge bait fish and barracuda schools, giant balck sea bass...and that was just from the surface!), a great coffee house, quality food locations, Von's, and activity centers. The staff is exceptional and will go out of their way to help you have a wonderful stay. A special bonus is a storage room and locker style showers for when you check out at 11:00 am and still have until 4:30pm to leave on the Ferry. Go snorkel or kayak at 11:30, return and clean up, have a comfortable lunch nearby and head to the ferry docks. The ferry and island really push the wearing of masks for Covid protection to allow them to stay in operation, so please comply! I'm a Covid survivor so it is not a hoax! read more

I am very disappointed in the customer service for this hotel. I had a reservation booked for an event that was canceled. I emailed and called them more than a month in advance and left messages asking if it was possible to cancel. I then called an additional 4 times as well as emailed 3 more times as instructed by the website and voice message. I have not received ANY response from them. I will not use them ever again. 8/10/2020 I am editing my review after the manager, Ian Kingley contacted me and took care of my concerns. He also apologized. We stayed here for a race weekend and the price was affordable. We stayed in a standard queen cottage. Do yourself a favor and upgrade to the deluxe. It was a double bed at best. The bathroom light fan and bedroom light are all one light switch. The heater was on a two hour timer but really only heated for 10 minutes at a time. We froze at nighttime. We got a generous late checkout. The staff had water and bananas for us race morning. The staff was wonderful but the standard cottage was glamping at best. read more

The rooms are filthy, my feet were black I couldn't walk around without shoes, the shower is a one person shower with the shower head facing into the wall, you can't adjust it, so you don't get wet I had to use a cup. I don't recommend this hotel. The receptionist was rude. We were trying to check-in, but she was too busy setting up for her podcast. She finally turned around and saw us standing there and then ignored us and went back to something she forgot to do. It took another staff member to come by and ask if we had been helped. We said no. He said, well, she is there, and she didn't help you? We said no. He looked at us with dissatisfaction himself. The room was clean, but the bed had bed bugs. My husband and I got bites. Sorry but you need to get better staff. Whoever was at the front reception area needs to go. She is bringing your hotel down. read more
