This was the WORSE experience we've ever had. Someone broke into our room while we were asleep! The man broke through the back bedroom window where two kids were sleeping on the top bunk bed. My 11-year-old nephew was on his phone in the living room when the man walked down the hallway, my nephew screamed and the man ran and went back out the way he came. Before any of this happened, we were already going to talk to the manager because our room was filthy, the floor was so dirty all of our feet were black, the dishes were dirty, multiple outlets and lights didn't work, at night it is SO loud from the bar across the way and cars/carts driving past, and two windows did not have a lock on them. I'm writing this review because I don't want anyone else to experience what we did... our three kids are terrified, none of us can sleep and we're stuck here until the morning. read more

I do not recommend. They look for ways to up their price because if you book on booking.com its cheaper. Also they tried to charge me axtra $25.00 for my dogs without telling me first. The phone lady said booking is cheaper but if I upgrade it would be more for my Birthday week. My dogs are potty trained and they said only one dog is usually allowed. No thanks. Great location and budget friendly costs. We had a good time here for the two nights we stayed. Avalon is a small town, so nothing is far away, but it's a 1 minute walk to the waterfront or the museum, and a two minute walk to the grocery store. The rooms were a little cramped, but I totally understand that since there were far fewer things to squeeze into a hotel room when the place was built circa 1900. read more

Was not sure what to expect when I booked last min at Hermosa Hotel but upon arrival I was greeted at reception by a very polite and helpful young man by the name of Robert, not only did he make check in a breeze but was very helpful in giving us great ideas for food and where to rent our golf cart, was even kind enough to offer us to to keep our personal belongings there after check out so we didn't have to lug around till my 630pm ferry back to long Beach, high 5 to Robert and Hermosa hotel for giving us a great experience and thanks for the Wine, made for a very chill and relaxing evening....will definitely be back! read more

It is a small hotel but very nice welcome staffs. Very good place to stay overnight at Avalon Catalina Island. Room is ready before time to check in and they let us check in before the time plus they also offered the beach chairs, lifesaver, beach towels, and sand playing shovels plus hot tea and coffee with free of charges all day long. I recommend this place if you are looking for a good place to stay over and good service. read more

Filthy, uncomfortable, and rooms are tiny. Nothing at all like their website photos and descriptions. I wish I read these reviews before booking. It is one of the few hotels allowing pets, so it was the only reason why I tolerated wasting hard earned vacation for the following health and safety hazards : 1. Mold on shower curtains, window frames, crevices of the shower head. 2. Mildew smell from AC unit. Okay so let's just air out the place, right? No, because: 3. No insect screen on windows. 4. Thick layer of dust on the blades of the ceiling fan so we couldn't use the fan without sending dust everywhere. Well ok, let's just at least do the bare minimum which is sleep two nights and basic hygiene. Oh wait that's no good either: 5. Hair in shower. 6. Stained shower bathmat and towels (is it clean??) 7. Strange slimy slick film on the floors. 8. Pillow fell behind the bed between the headboard. The white pillowcase picked up on the thick layer of dust and hair back there. 9. Linens were inside out?? 10. Hair dryer did not work 11. Toilet seat kept on shifting? Do not stay here. Pay a little more money for something clean. All we wanted was a basic place that allowed pets. Now I feel like I showered and inhaled 20+ hours of mold and mildew on my 2 night and 3 day vacation. I stayed at the Hermosa Hotel from Friday February 25- Sunday February 27. I stayed in the preferred queen cottage. For 2 nights it was $425.60. The rooms themselves were $380.00 with an occupancy tax of $45.60. The required check in age is +18 with proof of valid ID and a credit card. I called and a month ago and the lady who I spoke to specified that we use a credit card not a debit card. Staying at this hotel is one of the least expensive options on Catalina Island. Almost every other advertised hotel is about $400-$600. The hermosa Hotel is split into 2 categories being a cottage and a room. The cottages are located towards the left of the hotel. The Preferred Queen Cottage room I was given was right belong-side the hotel. I believe room 133, but it's at the first level right next to the hotel. Other cottages are located next to the second building and everything is all stairs from there as they are lined upwards. Keep that in mind that there's a chance you'll have to climb up 3 sets of stairs if you stay at one of the cottages. This room was practically a mini-home and it was more than efficient. I must have got lucky with a more up to date room. The only con about the room is that there is stains on some of the seats. Also the shower is a little small. It gets very cold off season in Catalina Island and the room did not have a heater. So you might want to bring extra blankets. The front desk leaves at around 5:00 and check-in is pretty late, 4:00 p.m. if you are heading earlier in the day you are able to store your luggage in the back of the main office and lobby. It's to the left of the office desk all the way straight in the back and you're able to leave your luggage there till check in. Although the desk employees leave early the whole lobby is open 24 seven. They have coffee creamer sugar the other assortments. All the chairs and couches and tables are also open. It is a very short walk to the beach. There is many restaurants. Antonio's Pizzeria & Cabaret is a good option! The bed is pretty uncomfortable and so are the chairs but you get what you pay for. Excellent stay for the two nights and three days we spent. Check-in was speedy and check-out likewise, getting us into our room and out for the activities we came to Catalina Island for. Made the reservation a few days before arrival on the phone. Very pleased with the service and was accommodated for a group of three in a two person room. They gave us a fold out bed and had plenty of room inside. Room came prepared with a small kitchen with the essentials: stove, refrigerator, microwave, utensils, and dishes. Could make our own meals no problem for our duration, and the Vons is right next door! Very convinient location being close to the shops, and far enough to enjoy peace from the noise. Not much of a view being blocked by some roofs, but that's what you go out for. Air con runs on diesel and turns off after two hours, though you shouldn't need it too much anyway. There's a fan situated right above the bed and kept you cool regardless. Ended up losing a key and there was no difficulty at all easing our transition out to our suprise. Definitely recommend for a less expensive alternative at a good value. The only cons would be thin walls, and the noise associated, depending on your neighbors. read more

Please be careful when booking in this hotel. Hermosa hotel now has sets of strict rules to follow when staying there. If you don't follow the rules, you will see a pending $100 charge in your credit card bill the following day . No wonder they don't issue the hotel receipt upon checking out. You have to be vigilant in checking your credit card bill because the charges will be posted in a few days! Complaining and trying to resolve the issues will fall on deaf ears. I think these people made the strict rules to follow in order to scam their guest. One false move and you're fined $$! My friendly advice , go book in another hotel so you don't get stressed out . This was a very busy weekend on the island Difficult to find lodging! We were lucky to get one of the last rooms available at Hermosa Hotel and cottage! Indeed the The cottage is very old but yet quaint! Most importantly the rooms were clean and comfortable and spacious for our party! My first encounter was with Nick He was truly amazing friendly and was able to accommodate our needs! The entire front-desk staff get a five star rating! My husband and I stayed here for a family trip (the family had to stay at different hotels due to availability). The room was quant but very neat and clean, but most importantly, we received excellent service and attention from Bailey! He was so sweet and did whatever he could to ensure we had a pleasant stay. First this hotel is not for hotel snobs like myself. We made it work because the island was sold out but it was definitely not what I thought I paid for. The Pros: * room had AC * staff was super nice * great location * tile floors in room The cons: * Our room was TINY, only a queen bed could fit, no night stand, no chair, no desk * No space for luggage, had to put it on the floor and step over it * Bathroom had no counter space, only a pedestal sink * Bed was in bad shape, not comfortable * No phone in the room * No coffee in room OR in the hotel * Neglected decor, outdated, carpet on stairs dirty * Every room different so you do not know what you are going to get. Our friends paid the same price and they got a big room with lots of space, night stands, microwave, fridge, king bed and twin bed, need I say more? It was really frustrating to have such a crappy hotel for two nights. Next time we will pay more to have better room. This hotel is good for people who do not care where they sleep read more

We stayed in the Jack n Jill rooms. Super comfortable for our family of 4. It was on the 3rd floor and there is no elevator. No biggie, because we only stayed one night and didn't have a lot of luggage. Vons grocery store is 1 block over and coffee shop and gift shops are close by. Checked in last night after a long trip from LAX all my wife and I wanted to do was take a nap before we went out for dinner upon our return which was in the late evening is when we found out that we had no heater in our room we froze our buts off but since the Hotel doesn't even supply a phone in our room there was nothing we can do both my wife and I slept with our street clothes to keep warm plus the room was nothing but a closet space with a small bathroom will never stay at this Hotel if we return to Catalina today after numerous attempts the staff supplied us with a small space heater Plus we found out that they open at 8am and close at 6pm there's no security for the exception of 1 staff who answers the outside incoming phone call. read more

Honestly there are a few really good things about this place-they take dogs for one!! The issue we had was the unit we were in was really dirty, had a broken printer under the bed, and had the dirtiest carpet in the bedroom that I've ever seen. I will commend many of the staff for being very nice and helpful. One of the women brought up a little mat for the bedroom because she saw how awful the rug was. Most of the staff were very nice--pretty rude woman at the desk which was unfortunate but everyone else was delightful. read more

Ok we must have stayed in not remodeled/updated room because i've only seen rooms like these in hostels in Europe. OLD and RUN DOWN are the only words that can describe the combo room that we have stayed over night and thank God it was just one night. The combo room is so tiny that when you open the door to the bathroom it touches the bed, there is no space really for your luggage. The beds are old and you can feel every spring. The sink is located IN the room (my friend comment was "just like in a prison cell!"), the tiny shower and toilet are separate. Shower was dirty, the shower head was spraying water all over and there was a giant black mold ring around it. I'm sorry but i couldn't notice retro glamour, just dirt, flaking paint, dusty windows and stained comforter. All of that can be overlooked if you are on a very tight budget and willing to deal with this level of "comfort", but i just can't justify the price we paid for this so called vintage charm - 220 shiny dollars! On the plus side, the hotel staff was pleasant and they provide a shuttle service to and from the ferry. The property is very centrally located. read more

This is the absolute worst hotel I have ever stayed in. Stained/dirty sheets, Mold everywhere, It's a 4" hole in our floor of our shower that allowed all the water to go into the floor not the drain, Dirty plates and glasses left in the room. And the worst customer service I have ever encountered in my 40 years of hotel stays. We were constantly being told that they would make it right before check out check out and then when checkout came we were told there was no management on site on the weekends and that they couldn't do anything for us then when I got upset they decided to call Avalon sheriff's department and have me escorted from the property already. Then they charged me twiyesterday so when I called to fix that They told me they would not talk to me on the phone that I had to deal with them through email. I scoured the internet for days before reserving a cottage with Hermosa Hotel and Catalina Cottages. Who knew Catalina could command $250 for your average motel-style room? $350 for one with an ocean view? I'm not kidding - I could only find two places with weekend rates under $200 - in early May! And this was one of them. I totally psyched myself out over the TripAdvisor reviews - some were glowing, but two mentioned bedbug infestations... gross! But at $80 a night ($90 after taxes) for a "cottage" with private bath (their cheapest non-cottage rooms share bathrooms), I figured I would take a chance that the glowing reviews were closer to the mark. I didn't spend any time in the lobby and never saw any of the rooms in the hotel proper. When we arrived, we were greeted by friendly staff (possibly owners) and informed we were receiving a free upgrade to a cottage with kitchenette (we had reserved one with just a bedroom and bathroom). We headed straight up the street to the separate cottage area. Our cottage was, as the phone reservationist and the front desk folk warned us, small and basic. The structure was tiny, kind of rickety and rough around the edges, the furniture was old, and there was no heat or AC (some units do have climate control, but most do not), or even phone (but who uses a hotel phone anymore - other than to request wake up calls or room service, which this place doesn't offer?). There *was* a ceiling fan and plenty of open-able windows, as well as an electric blanket and spare regular blankets. The bed itself was bug-free (whew) with clean sheets, and it was comfortable enough. The bathroom was, despite its cramped quarters, perfectly functional - and the bath towels were new. We never used the kitchen, but it had a mini-fridge, range, sink, small table and dishes (which you have to clean yourself or pay a $25 fee). The TV included cable. Since our cottage had its own walls, we never heard our neighbors, though we had some (in fact, the owners post a notice in the rooms that warns they will kick you out for excessive noise - this I like!). We were just a few doors down from a Vons, and just a few blocks from the beach. We stayed two nights and left with no complaints. It's worth it to note, however, that the housekeeping door hanger has two sides - to clean or not to clean - THAT is the question which, left unanswered, apparently defaults to "not" - so don't forget to hang it. Bottom line: Hermosa has small, basic, clean cottages for the most affordable prices I could find for any Avalon accommodations. I'd definitely stay again. read more

The hotel floor was super dirty. The pictures on their website does not even look the same as the room. Our last night, someone (a local) broke into our room around 1AM while we were in there. Since it was after hours, nobody was in the lobby. I called emergency services for the hotel and was told that some guy got a master key and wanted to find a place to stay for the night. I guess it is a normal thing that happens there. We stayed in the jack and Jill room, I heard the person try to get into the other room first but was unsuccessful because the deadbolt was working. Unfortunately, in the room we were staying, the deadbolt did not work (they only had the one deadbolt lock and nothing else) and the guy opened the door. Definitely a traumatizing experience and will not be staying here again. read more

This was a very comfortable and quaint hotel to stay while on the island. Checking in, we were given a very comfortable room with a small kitchen, bathroom and comfy bed. There was plenty of room for us even though we spent most of our time exploring the island, fishing and bar hopping. In our defense it's college ball season and it was a very important game. Overall, it was quiet from what I could tell, although were probably the loudest people trying to play music and such but nobody complained and we had a nice comfy place to stay at an affordable price. read more

Every hotel experience is primarily dependent on the room, so I totally get the mixed reviews. Thankfully, my visit was a positive one...either because 1) Hermosa read all the negative reviews and got their shit together, or 2) I was one of the lucky ones who got a clean and comfortable room. The hotel served its purpose for the weekend. It was just a spot to rest up and shower after exploring the island. So I'll start with the good: 1) ROOM: My group had Landing Cottages 43 and 44, two flights of stairs above the lobby. They were clean, comfortable, and roomy enough for a couple or small family. The room came with a small fridge, cable TV, microwave, AC/heater and two full beds. We had a good sized bathroom with a stand-up shower. Quiet hours are enforced between 10pm and 6am, and since I was nestled into the property and not facing the street, I slept sweetly and soundly. **TIPS: some rooms don't come with A/C or heat, so make sure to request a room accordingly. Also, there are no elevators. 2) SERVICE: The staff is so friendly and helpful. I booked my Groupon in Feb and just used it this past weekend. In the 7 months it took to finally redeem my deal, I literally communicated with the hotel via email about 30 times and via phone a dozen more. I changed our dates, boat reservations, zipline/snorkeling tour times too many times to count. The staff, especially Justin, was always so patient. 3) LOCATION: The hotel was close to everything and within walking distance of anywhere in town. The VONS was next door, so you can stock up on snacks, bottled waters, and alcohol. The bad: I wanted to give this place 4 stars. BUT since I booked a Groupon that included 2 nights and 2 roundtrip Catalina Express tickets, I got a killer deal. However, after researching how much it would cost normally to stay here peak season on a weekend, it seemed a little expensive for what you were actually getting. I'm not sure if this is comparable to the rest of the island, but it seems overpriced for a budget hotel. read more

I think they need to update the rooms. It's definitely a bit run down. My friend got the Groupon that included 2 ferry tickets. At first they didn't allow her to use it on the weekends (which was odd) and then they finally allowed her to use it on Sunday. It included a small kitchen, a fridge, a microwave, and a coffee machine. Restrooms were tiny and beds weren't soft. The rooms were also pretty hot. It's a nice spot to stay since it's in the middle but I think for Catalina, I would rather just camp for $20 a night. read more

Came in June for the Catalina's Flying Fish Festival and stayed in one of the cottages @ Hermosa Hotel for one night. It had 2 double beds, a bathroom, and a kitchen. The hotel wasn't too far in and you had access to a market just 2 buildings over. The room was outdated and small. It's like as if you're driving on a one way street, only one person can be coming or going. One person literally has to back up, or jump onto one of the beds, for the other person to pass. For both beds, one side of it was pushed against the wall, which left a single narrow pathway. There was a tiny TV with bad picture quality mounted on the wall. Definitely pack light since there is very minimal space for luggage storage in the bedroom. There is no AC. There is a ceiling fan, which basically pushes the hot air around in the room. Be prepared to keep the door and window open for some cool air. The bathroom is very small as well. You can fit a max of one person. Basically, you walk in and pivot and that's about as far as you'll get. The shower is a standing shower. The water pressure was pretty low. At 5'3", even I felt the shower was a bit too cramped. Not to mention the bathroom door opens outwards, which blocks the entrance to the kitchen. The size of the kitchen was pretty decent. It had a table w/chairs, counter top with a sink, and stove. A microwave was also provided. Be warned if you choose to cook: there are very limited pots/pans and utensils. Luckily the grocery store was just down the street. (We had to pick up plates, utensils, cooking oil, knife, cups etc.) All in all, I would not recommend booking one of the cottages. Yes for the most part you wont be in your room most of the time. But when you do return to your room after a long day of outdoor activities on Catalina, you deserve to come back to a room that is spacious and cool. So spend a few dollars more and look for another hotel =) Booking a room: Be sure to NOT get the rooms located on the first floor of the hotel. The luggage room is right next to 2 of the guest rooms. Not to mention that is where the ice machine and restroom is located. read more

Standard queen room is decent sized but I think it would be a struggle if you have a big luggage. Shower floor has a soft/ sunken spot. My experience isn't saying Hermosa Hotel is a Five star hotel, it's in reference to a great stay I had the last few days by using a Groupon. After purchasing the groupon I was Leary about using it after I read the yelp reviews. But upon further reading I realized that most of the challenges would have been non issue if people would read their website and their groupon before there stay. It's an old hotel, one of the reasons I loved it. The room was small, but stocked with everything I needed. Refrigerator, microwave, clean bathroom and clean room. No elevator but come on!! One of the amazing perks to living in or visiting California is the lavish escapes you can take without having to travel too far. Among my travels I stumbled upon the Hermosa Hotel and Catalina Boat House, which went well far beyond any expectation I had. From the very first phone conversation I had with owner Mark to checking out of the hotel on the day of departure I was treated with the upmost respect and hospitality. The room was clean and very welcoming. The view from our suite (as pictured) was in a category of its' own! What sets this experience apart of many of my travels is the fact that the entire staff truly understood the expenses associated with even making out to Catalina Island; with that knowledge they ensured I felt as though every bit of my money was money well spent. I would highly recommend The Hermosa Hotel and Catalina Boat house to anyone for a Catalina getaway. When you think of a 119 year old historical Catalina landmark and impeccable hospitality, Hermosa Hotel and Catalina Boat House should quickly come to mind. read more

Although I was booked for Hermosa Hotel, I was put in a satellite hotel (the "Beach House", which was horrible - see my review for the actual room over there). But because the room I stayed in was owned by Hermosa Hotel, I did have a fair amount of interaction with Hermosa Hotel. And I must say, the interaction I had was poor. 1. There IS a room for scuba gear but it is not locked/monitored. Do not leave anything valuable in your gear bag. I know, Catalina isn't exactly crime central but just FYI 2. The front desk seemed to be managed by apathetical young people. The few interactions I had with them were sub par. 3. I frankly feel 'tricked' / bait & switched that I was to stay in the Hermosa but then was put in some horrible wreck of a room up the street. 4. Hermosa Hotel has this nice cart, but apparently they really don't want to use it. I only got one ride, and was pretty much told I was SOL for anything else, including dragging my diving gear back to Catalina Express. Why would you have this pimp ride and then not give anyone rides!? read more
