First of all parking payment rates have drastically changed along with the hours that you need to pay for parking. There is no free half hour anymore. You now have to pay Monday through Saturday up to 10PM. I believe the rate is $1.25 per hour. You also must pay in advance and guesstimate how long you plan to stay and there's no half hour increments so if you only want to pop into a restaurant for carry out, then you need to either take your chances and not pay, or pay for an hours worth of parking. Also, none of the three places I mentioned that I visited exist anymore, but there are lots of great stores and new restaurants in Downtown Silver Spring to explore. This parking garage is the closest one to where all the action is in Downtown Silver Spring.

It gets pretty crowded on the weekends and evenings because of the time period and because it's free to park if you exit after 9pm on weekdays and free all day on the weekend. There are electronic signs that indicate the number of spots on each level as you ascend the ramps to the next level, but they're usually inaccurate. The technology to sense filled/vacant spots that's used it Tysons Corner Center, for example, isn't used here. Still, I've never had a problem parking. There are usually attendants on duty before 9 pm as well as several kiosks to pay before you return to your car. You can also pay upon exit, but that causes a line of cars behind you and is inadvisable on a busy night.

There are three levels…read more This garage is very clean and new and is intended for only certain businesses, meaning you'll need to make sure the businesses you are going to (The Boro restaurants and the ICON movie theater) are directly attached to the garage, otherwise you'll have to pay for parking without validation. ICON validates 8 hours. I went to Flower Child, which was across the street but they don't validate this garage. Luckily, the movie theater folks validated me as a courtesy. I didn't see any electric vehicle charging stations.

Upon arrival you need to flash the barcode on the receipt you need to print out with your reservation. There might not be an attendant there so ty he barcode reader will raise the gate and let you in. A shuttle will take you from the garage basically across the street to the Crown Plaza Hotel which has shuttles to Dulles Airport every 30 minutes. Pretty simple. What they don't tell you is how to get back to your car after you return from your trip. You pick up the shuttle where all the other hotel shuttles pick up passengers, at the far end of the terminal baggage claim level. When you board, you must tell the driver you want to be dropped off at the Herndon Park and Fly. The shuttle you took from the garage to the Crown Plaza only drops off. It does not pick up...thst is, it's parked at the garage. It only goes to the hotel when someone at the garage needs to go there. So if you don't know this, like I didn't, you end up at stranded at the hotel. When I learned this from the hotel shuttle driver, I'd been waiting over 45 minutes. So by the time I got to my car to leave, the automated gate told me I owed an additional $7 because I was checking out over 45 minutes later than I had originally scheduled and paid for. Fortunately the parking attendant was able to let me out without having to pay the additional charge. Confused? Yeah I was too. Now that I know the system, it should go more smoothly next time. Forewarned us forearmed.

There the shuttle was leaving 15 minutes later than was posted on Herndon Park and Fly's website. In short, this place is a better deal than airport parking but is not worth the headache.

This garage is a bit pricier than the street parking but they have a garage to maintain and run, and it feels safer to park in a garage than on a street, so I opted to park here. The interior is clean, properly maintained, and brightly lit at night. There are multiple entrances and exits and a few dead ends where you end up having to make a U turn in the middle of the garage, which is a bit odd. The signage is clear and directed me to the elevators and stairwells. You can either pay by foot before getting back to your vehicle or pay at the exit terminal (which might annoy people behind you if there's a line).

Decent enough parking garage if you don't want to take your chances with the two hour parking…read moremeters on the street. Enter and get your ticket, find a spot, leave your car. When you come back, pay for the parking and then leave. Spaces were reasonably wide and there were plenty of them on a weekday. Perhaps later in the day and on weekends, it gets busy. But I was able to find a spot on a low floor near the exit easily. And speaking of the exit, follow the signs and the painted arrows. Don't try and work it out yourself as it's messy. There is a pay machine at the foot entrance on the ground floor. I didn't see any higher up.
