Honestly, pick ANY other location. Went to pick up my reserved car, they only had an EV. That wouldn't have been a problem, except it was NOT fully charged. They offered to "upgrade" me to a gas car for an extra $23/day. In addition, they JUST changed their business hours, which affected my drop-off. I would have had to drop-off at a much further location. I cut my losses and cancelled my reservation and a future reservation I had made. Never renting from here again. read more

Words cannot express how terrible of an experience I had at this Hertz location. While I don't expect anything glamorous in a rental car, I do expect the car I reserved to be available. After my car was not available and they tried to charge me for a different one, I was finally put in an "upgraded" SUV. Within minutes of leaving the car started smoking and the Check Engine light came on. We were put in a 40% charged Tesla which also had issues that required us to switch cars. Overall, my 5 hour drive turned into 12 and we had 4 different cars. On top of that I was charged too much and cannot get in contact with anyone from Hertz to rectify this situation. I was told by the young woman who handled the rental in my last review as I walked in the door that "it's not happening. I waited in line and when it was my turn was told there were no available vehicles even though their garage was full and I had a reservation. That's when I lost my cool. Where is the ZERO!!!!!!The pattern of horrible behavior continues at this Hertz location. I have never in my life experienced a situation where an employee literally refused to rent me a car even though I had reserved the car ahead of time, called several times to say I would be late to pick up said car (but no one ever answered), checked in on line providing my ID and CC# before arriving to ensure I still had said car. This woman and her co-worker literally refused to give me a car because I was displeased with her sarcastic attitude. I was standing there after a super long travel day with 5 pieces of luggage, a booster seat, and a tired 7 year old boy. She told me I was lucky they would rent me a car at all after being so late to pick it up, that they would charge me more for the car they had left. I was desperate I agreed. But then she repeatedly said, if I were you, I would have kept calling and pressed 5 for customer service when no one answered; I would not just be late for my reservation; I woulda done this and that.....I'm thinking to myself, how does this woman have a job? How do you behave like this at work? I told her she was very rude. And then she just lost her mind and refused to rent me a car. Said I was lucky to she was going to give me my credit card back. I'm like, what? Then her co-worker comes in; she relays the story to him and he agrees. I honestly don't understand how these people have jobs. I was like, I have all this luggage and a kid and it's raining! Give me the car! And she said, well you walking now, aren't you?! That's when I lost my mind and called her some f-bombs. She said I was threatening her when I asked for her name, which I need so that I can start my letter writing campaign to Hertz HQ and the BBB. After walking down several blocks with all my luggage, my kid and his car seat, I arrived at Enterprise. Thankfully they had a car. Hertz has fallen into some type of F customer but let's spend more money on Advertising and marketing stuff. They will not listen to paying customers (which is almost 59% of referral and returning business) it continues to spent million on advertising. This company is losing 45% of its business to personal car service ( Lyft Uber.) and 22% to other private retal companies. Again I say stay away. Do not use this location under any circumstances. You will be better off with ANY alternative. They did not provide the automobile I had reserved. The automobile finally offered was purportedly "the last one available", and it was ​​provided in filthy condition. The automobile turned out to have a slow leak in one of the tires requiring it be towed in the middle of the contract term. Attendants at the location were unhelpful and rude. The manager was rude and incompetent. He tried to get paid three separate times on a contract he did not even begin to fulfill. Sleazy, dirty and dangerous. The app will tell you there are cars when there are none. Call after you reserve, use "5" to get to a human being instead of the phone que. Alex and Fred were absolutely wonderful to us and were patient while working through a really tough spot. UPDATE: I returned my car with a full tank of gas, and was charged $72 for fuel. Good thing I've saved my receipts. I would give this location zero stars if I could. Find anywhere else to rent. I'll try to be balanced here. On the bright side, the location is good. The hours of this location are also decent for a non-airport location. Then there are the challenges. There is no after-hours drop box or the option to return vehicles after hours. If you return after hours, you have to come back the next day to return a parking garage ticket. The vehicle I received had 65,000 miles on it and was in rough shape, including engine issues. Also, every other review that notes this location simply ignores phone calls is spot on. Called about a reservation 15 minutes after the location opened, no answer. Called again 15 minutes later, and someone answered and immediately hung up on me. I'm not sure if this is a phone issue or if there are people actively ignoring calls. If the wrong number is listed online, it should be fixed. Hertz central reservations are not much better: the phone system does not allow for you to ask for a representative. No amount of Tom Brady commercials can make up for basic customer service. read more

The wait time to pick up the car took so long. Waited in line for about 30 minutes to be told I had to wait longer while they "pull down cars". Unorganized business, I made a reservation and they told me they didn't even know if they had a car for me. Had to wait 20 minutes for them to check to see if they had any cars for me. The waiting room was packed with people waiting for cars. So poorly run, this was my first time using Hertz and definitely my last. read more

This is a horrible location. If you can just grab an RTA to the airport or uber to another location - in case you live downtown. If you are coming from out of town by plane, just grab your rental at the airport and put up with the extra few hours you will have to park it at your hotel or on the street. Street parking in Chicago cannot be more annoying and nerve wrecking than having to deal with the employees at this location. My party's reservation for the car was eleven - we did not receive it until 12:30 with low tire pressure. Before we received our car, we listened to 3 other upset customers. The Hertz Lincoln Park, HLE has a soft interpretation of a reservation. I booked a car on March 10 to pick up April 7. The Hertz website states the corporate policy is that each reservation is guaranteed and will not be canceled, but a different style may be offered. However I received a call from the Lincoln Park branch on April 6 that they have no cars available for me to pick up...18 hours before I expected to pick up my car. The agent left a message that it was up to me if I wanted to try O'Hare or Midway to see if they have cars. I called the corporate office - they said my reservation is guaranteed, but if the local office said "they have no cars, we will not charge you a cancelation fee". This is not the first time this Lincoln Park, HLE branch has done this. Last week during Easter weekend I arrived to pick up my car only to realize I somehow reserved the wrong date. They could offer a car at full retail price, which was an eye-watering rate but I had already prepaid my hotel so I accepted. The agent told me he will cancel somebody else's reservation who just booked today. I thought it was just a scam to high gross me, but seeing how they canceled my reservation I think they actually canceled somebody else's reservation who was expecting to pick up a car, probably reserved at a much lower price than they charged me. I know the voice of the agent - it was the same person who left a message that had canceled on somebody else a week ago. I don't think this is a sustainable business model, I will not use this location, or maybe even Hertz again. read more

I'm a gold member and yet this will likely be the last time I rent with Hertz. At initial check in they were friendly, but when I got in the car, I noticed it smelled severely of air freshener. I assumed this was just related to the cleaning and was exhausted after a long day, so took the car into the city where I was staying. Didn't end up driving at the next day, but the day after I got in and noticed a severe cigarette sent and a cigarette burn on the driver side seat. In addition, the cigarette or small storage area in the console was sticky and dirty, and the cover for the back storage area was obviously from a different vehicle, did not fit, and took up a large portion of the rearview mirror space. None of this had been noted prior to renting the Car. I stopped at three Hertz locations and was told they did not have any cars that I could trade out for. RJ with reservations told me these locations would have cars, but said he couldn't reserve any for me and couldn't make any promises. Elijah at the State Street Chicago location walked away from me, after telling me there were no cars and did not offer any type of support or even a phone number to call for assistance. Larry at Midway location (again, where I was told cars were available on the phone) told me there was nothing for me and would hardly even make eye contact. He also mentioned that it was Saturday so I shouldn't really expect anything and that there wasn't really any customer service or manager available. When I asked about options, he just handed me the customer service booklet and again ignored any further questions that I had. Overall, I spent half a day trying to figure this out and still got nowhere. I spent over an hour on hold with no one even picking up the phone just calling and dialing multiple locations without getting any assistance. This location (401 N State St, Chicago) is the worst rental car location I've used. I rent cars weekly for work, and the most recent car I was given was a beater. Had 70k miles and I drove 30 mins and ended up having to get towed because a flat tire and the car didn't have a spare. Every car I've rented is dirty, smells like cigs or trying to cover up cigs with air freshener, the windshields have been dirty with streaks. You can tell the people who work here do not care about the 'customers' experience whatsoever. Honestly, if you do have to get towed, the customer service was good. After I cancelled a previous reservation I had for pick up today and made a new one because prices had gone down significantly, they called to say they couldn't honor the reservation which their system allowed me to make and showed available because it was made on the same day. I work in the hospitality industry, and I know that they are simply doing this because they are upset that I canceled a higher rated reservation to make one that was more economical. Picking up early on a weekday is key. In and out smooth from our reservation online. One day rental to do outlying Chicago neighborhoods. Fun. Bad that MUST return rental during biz hrs, but ok. We did - back into the garage by 6pm. Note: gas tank NOT full when we drove away; not worth it to argue.... Clock was ticking. Unfortunately the last part of the day, the return, AND our very last experience & contact with this establishment is some guy hollering at us to Not park there, but get in his lineup. Fine. (There was no signage as to what they needed you to do) Then he barks at us to leave driver's window down and key in ignition with Absolutely no eye-contact whatsoever. He must be such an angry person. Get with the program guy. You are the last face of Hertz that I will see. And you SUCKED at customer service. Too bad. Once again, I've had another horrendous experience with this location. I booked a reservation 2 weeks in advanced. They called me 30 minutes before my reservation time and said "I wanted to call you in advanced to let you know we don't have any cars for you." They didn't have a solution for me and were not helpful in getting me in another rental car. They advised me that I needed to call customer service. I'm now on hour 2 of trying to find a solution, and they want me to go 40 minutes away and pay extra for a lower class vehicle. Absolutely unacceptable. Don't even think these guys clean the cars that well. When asked to change, I was told very rudely by Andy to go rent it at the airport instead. Are you kidding me? No accommodations for premium members, I don't even know how the non members are treated. Avoid this location at all costs! Worst experience at Hertz. I am however a loyal Hertz member because their amazing customer service and rewards program. Won't let this location ruin my relationship with Hertz. I rented from this location on 9/27. Pick up was fine. I was told to have the car back by 6 PM as the office closed at 6 PM and this location did not have after hours drop off. I pulled into the lot on 10/1. I had to take a ticket. I didn't notice the gate was down for the return area. This was my first time renting here. I went to the office and it was closed. It was definitely before 6 PM. I spent an hour on the phone w/ Hertz to figure out what to do. I had to pay $18 to get out of the lot b/c in the end the representative told me to take the car and return it the next morning and I would not be charged the extra day. That was great, however, I had to work very early the next morning and was late b/c of this fiasco. If you say you are open until 6 PM then be open until 6 PM. I wasted $18 and my time. I won't rent here again and probably not from Hertz at all. On a positive note, and hence the one star, the guy who accepted my car in the garage was super nice. read more

For my Son's Birthday, I wanted to get the family out of the city and let him run around in nature because he is surrounded by buildings and has nowhere to run and play. So I rented a car and showed up to get my rental from this spot since it's the closest to my apartment. I got all the extras I needed (various rental insurances, fuel level, etc.). My family and I are heading out of the city, we get on the freeway, and the tire explodes after about 40 minutes of driving. I dialed the 1-800 number they provide, and it was an awful experience. The operator put me on hold multiple times while I was on the shoulder of a busy interstate with my family in the car. Then they found the furthest towtruck company available and quoted me 90 minutes before the towtruck could show up. After about 2 hours of trying to get tow service, the tow truck showed up before I finished with the operator. They finally gave me a voucher for the tire replacement and told me where to go, while the tow truck driver had to wait with us in the truck till they could figure out where to take the car. After another hour of waiting, we finally arrived at the tire shop, but the shop couldn't do anything until the voucher was processed. So once again, I have to call ANOTHER 1-800 number to process the voucher to get a new tire. The 1-800 number just randomly hangs up on my call twice, and on the 3rd, it takes 20 minutes for a human to answer me. My family has been waiting about 4 hours, and I've only driven the car for about 40 minutes. Finally, the new tire is put on, and we head to our destination. Hertz then tells me that I need to go to a local Hertz rental location so they can do an incident report. The closest one is miles away, so I have to call another 1-800 number and again get put on hold for too long while listening to their STUPID hold music. After about 30 minutes of waiting, I get another operator who doesn't understand why I don't want to drive another hour to a Hertz facility. Finally, the operator notes that I will do the incident report upon returning the car and lets me go about my day. To put a cherry on this awful experience, I return the car and went into the office to report the incident. The clerk told me that I was responsible for the tire and needed to pay the replacement cost. What made this entire experience crazy was that when I rented the car, they gave me a letter thanking me for being a valued customer. Hertz, if this is how you treat your "valued customers," I think I will just stick with other rental companies. read more

This post is out of desperation. I had a car rental scheduled for today. I needed to talk to a representative to discuss a potential issue with the reservation. I have called 12 times today and no one answers the call, there is not a voicemail, and no way to reach customer service. I have had to cancel my car repair because I need to confirm a rental car. I understand that the work day can get busy, but this is impossible. Also, I received 3 calls yesterday on my voicemail to remind me of my reservation. I got my car quickly upon pickup. The car was clean and nice. The reason for my disappointment / my low rating is: after I returned the car, I noticed I was charged for a loss and damage waiver. It said "accepted" on the receipt. I did not ask for this to be added or included, and no one asked me if I wanted it to be added or included, so I feel like I was charged for this incorrectly. When I called and asked for the error to be corrected, they said that I should've caught it when I first picked up the car. The fact is: I was in a hurry to go to work when I picked up the car. Shame on me for assuming they did their job correctly. And shame on me for thinking they cared about creating future customers. After talking to the manager at length, she offered to include an upgrade on a future car rental. That would be a hard "no thank you" from me. Because I will not be coming back in the future, because I feel like I was taken advantage of. I feel like I am being penalized for catching an error later, rather than catching this error beforehand. They were of no help and I have such a bad taste in my mouth. I should have been skeptical as there were several groups waiting in front of us. Waited for 90 minutes with no cars arriving - but plenty of other folks with reservations showing up to be told to wait as well. Finally left and found alternative transportation.
