They don't honor their reservation. They are very rude on the phone where unapologetically say that they sold out all the cars for the day, so they don't have one even though you reserved one. Absolutely horrendous experience, in this Medford location. Had a reservation for over 2 weeks and they called me 2 HOURS before I was scheduled to pick up my vehicle and cancelled my reservation. The response was " I don't know how you were able to make that reservation." Not much help in the moment when I was leaving out of town the next day! No excuse for not giving me more notice than 2 hours!!!! NEVER will reserve here again. Thank god for Hertz in Revere! They were angels and got me in exactly what I needed. read more

If you are renting an EV: know that they don't have a charger and won't necessarily give you a fully-charged car. They gave us a Polaris with only 44% (110 miles) on it. We had to find one of the few locations in greater Boston where we could charge it and spend about 90 minutes over two sessions to charge it up and recharge it before return. Also: we were not impressed with the service at this location. It took forever to pick up our car and we didn't drive away until about 45 minutes after we got there, even though there were just two customers in line ahead of us. The agents were in no hurry and seemed to assume that none of their customers could possibly need to get anywhere fast. We were lucky we didn't need to. read more

Don't expect to get a car just because you have a reservation. I showed up at 10:30 for a 10:30 reservation I had made weeks in advance. I was told to wait. At 12 I was still waiting. I wish I had been as lucky as the guy who showed up with a reservation 5 minutes after me and was told to go home - it would have saved me an hour and a half of waiting for nothing. I booked a car online and drove down to pick it up. It was a run-down dirty looking place with 3 guys sitting behind the desk. I said I was there to pick up a car, and then I pre booked it online. They said they needed the credit card I booked it with. I said there is any other way to rent a car ? All I have is a debit / credit card on me. He said they didn't accept it. He said something else about a $500 deposit blah blah blah he was not trying to get my business at all. He was actually pretty useless. I walked across the street to Enterprise and told him I needed a car for 10 to 14 days. Here is my debit card I was in, and out in 10 minutes, I do not recommend Hertz at all !!!!!! read more

Absolute WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!!! Whatever you do..DO NOT Go there! Paul is extremely difficult and unprofessional. My insurance has approved my claim and days...yet he still has billed me. Was billing me every day. I was told that I would be refunded once the contract ended. I consulted my attorney and he recommended for me to turn vehicle in to stop the charges. I did that today. When I asked to be refunded.. I Was told I would be billed another $400. I immediately went to the ATM an withdrew all of my money so they could no longer access it. I got my insurance on the phone to speak directly to Paul, he refused to speak to them and yelled "Get Out" to me. Absolutely unprofessional. I always rent through Hertz and have been doing so for the last 15 years. They've always been good to me but today I received amazing customer service from Paul. I normally go to the Somerville location when I visit but this is closer to my parents house. When I got there Paul immediately took care of me and got me in a car and out in no time. I have never written a bad review in my life... but I had the worst experience here and am trying to rectify the incorrect charges but cannot get ahold of anyone because their phones still aren't working. The first car was undriveable because they missed the alert that the rear tires needed to be changed. I couldn't get in touch (because phones weren't working and still aren't) so I had to waste and hour on the phone with the generic customer service # and roadside. They would not deliver me a new car and pick up the one that desperately needed service so I had to turn around (on my way out of town) to go back and complete the transfer at the counter myself which delayed my trip. The second car had no charger so I went inside to ask them for one - I was laughed at and then had to go find the last car I rented in a sea of cars to retrieve a charger myself because he was already busy with someone else. I returned the car earlier than expected and then all of a sudden my weekly rate went up to a daily rate that was more expensive and I am trying to understand why and be refunded for the difference. I had a good experience here. I was having my car fixed at Alewife Automotive and they have a pretty sweet partnership with Hertz for a low daily rate. I got upgraded to a full size dodge avenger for free just by request which was pretty sweet :) Paula was handling customers patiently and I like that they keep their doors open to customers up until closing time and then work with whoever is there until the line is terminated. The previous reviewer from 2009 harps because of return times being outside hours of operation. I can see how that would be a problem (no idea if this is continuing), but in my case I was able to return it on Sunday to the repair shop directly and Hertz came the next day and picked it up from there without a problem. Also I went with the insurance but I don't think it's a rip-off. I opted in even before they offered just because I like the peace of mind. It's a shame that more people don't leave reviews, even those with moderate experiences. read more

Be careful and smart when your dealing with these jerks. I have a more accurate word for this Co. Returned my car full tank of gas and I'm being charged $160 gas fees. They don't answer the phones, you get disconnected. I returned the rental car on July 22, August they started charging my credit card, I went to hertz in Medford on August 4th spoke to an agent. He told me I was all set they were just waiting in insurance payment and fees would be deleted, and now I owe $160 for gas. Seriously who brings back a rent a car with no gas. Beware, be smart, take pictures, or hertz will take advantage of you like they did me! Shame your hertz they employee 50,000 people try getting 1 on the phone good luck. $160 Gas Fee pure robbery, especially when I know I filled the tank! I was trying to help a work colleague who was in a jam, because he did not have a credit card on him. He only had a debit card, and therefore could not rent a car. This was in the Newton office. I was told that I would have to go in person (a considerable distance) with My credit card to secure the car. This seamed unreasonable so I tried to call over a half a dozen other Hertz offices to clarify the rental policy. No one picked up the phone (this was before 4 pm), except a very helpful and cheery person named Shevonne in the Medford office. Shevonne was patient and empathetic explaining the policy about debit cards in great detail. It turns out that it did not work out for us, but it is wonderful to talk to a person who is knowledgeable and cares, So, she gets a 5 star rating, and the rest of Hertz gets a zero. Car rental places can really suck, but this Hertz location shines. I've had nothing but good experiences renting here. They get you in and out quickly. And they'll even give you a ride home if you live close by and they have enough coverage in the shop. I had amazing customer service from a brand new employee named Paul the last time I rented. Non-existent customer service locally. They have a local number but do not answer the phone, so you get redirected to the Philippines. This makes it awfully hard to schedule pick-up service, which they claim to offer when you make the reservation. And one rep said that they MAY reimburse me for a cab ride there, but not if I didn't first call them to arrange for pick-up. Huh. How did I get stuck in this awful spiral? A male sales associate was not kind, compassionate or forthcoming with information in regard to whether or not a car reserved by an insurance company would be actually be available as promised to them when I arrived. Answers to my questions were vague, short and no true listening was occurring during this conversation. I have extreme doubts the rental service that is to be provided after a financial exchange will effectively or reliably happen later this afternoon when I arrive to pick up the rental car. This fear stems from the fact that after I explained that I was a nurse who cannot abandon patients to leave in the middle of the day to pick up a rental car after my personal vehicle was totaled in the middle of the night by a repeat DUI offender, "it will either be here or not ya know, MY JOB is just getting cars on the road." I stated, "my job is to make sure patient's don't die during surgery. You cannot give away a car to someone else which is paid for and reserved by an insurance company (that supports drunk drivers BTW)". He then hung up. If only he had listened to me, and perhaps re-evaluated his life choices up until this moment, frustration from both sides could have been avoided. read more

I had a similar experience to Heather S. Oneway rental fron NYC that had me going to the Medford location as a drop off on Sat by 5PM (after the location is closed) and there is that sign that says that charges will continue to acrue until they open on the next business day. I immediately called Hertz (twice, hoping to find someone to help me) but both agents said they were unable to help me and that it was the local branches call on whether or not I would be charged the extra time. Unfortunately I had already dropped the keys in the lock box when I noticed the sign. So why is Hertz sending people to locations that are closed before their 24 hour window is over? read more

Beware of this company. Rented car thru these guys May 23, 2014 to May 30, 2014. Declined any toll/plate pass agreement. Paid all tolls in cash. Received a $28.75 charge for a $1.00 toll they said we drove thru. No, we did not drive through any tolls. Charged us $24.75 in administration fees. This is a SCAM. The charge is being shown under a third party company called PlatePass. You call Hertz and they said to call PlatePass. You call PlatePass and they tell you to call Hertz. I live in Medford, so this is my local office. I have tried more times than I care to count to work with these people. Still waiting. The customer service is AWFUL, seriously, from the bottom to the top. My husband was just there today trying to swap his Chevy Sonic insurance rental (worth noting he owns a Toyota Tacoma and a Chevy Sonic is teeny.) The desk agent first stated he had nothing available, then changed his stance and said the only thing he had was "smaller than what you have".... then changed it again to say he had the SAME vehicle available. Obviously honesty is not their thing. The manager heard the conversation and peeked out from her office, and then went back in. Never offered any assistance to my husband. So my husband comes home with the story, and I go online. Guess What???? I request a pick up at the same location, literally in 3 HOURS and they have plenty of cars available for pick up, including Full Size. Do yourself a favor, hit up Enterprise across the street, they'll even pick you up or drop you off if you need them too, and their staff is soooo much nicer. I have rented there plenty of times without issue. Hertz has blown every chance I've given them to run a respectable business. read more

The staff is very rude and really pushes the Hertz personal accident insurance. The guy at the desk tried to convince me that my personal auto insurance won't cover my Hertz vehicle because the Hertz vehicle is a newer model than my personal vehicle. What a croc! He also wouldn't accept my Costco membership discount, which he is obligated to do. Here's a tip - this place has may compact cars, but very few midsize and standard size vehicles. Be sure to reserve a midsize and you will likely get a free upgrade to a full size. I've found the staff at the Enterprise across the street to be much more pleasant and helpful. read more
