I have been a Hertz customer for many years. Their customer service is superior . Their cars and big trucks - I have rented both - are so well kept. I feel safe driving . Today was no different! I had rented and returned a car in Oregon and then flew to Texas and needed to rent another . The return had not processed and was keeping me from renting at my current location. Do not ever, ever rent from this Hertz location. They charged me for damages I did not cause, but unfortunately I trusted them and did not take photos or videos when I picked up and dropped off the car. UPSELL. UPSELL. UPSELL. My husband was on a work trip in San Antonio and rented a car from Hertz through Priceline. He paid in advance. Upon arriving at the desk, there were only a couple people in front of him and multiple clerks working the desk so waiting was not a problem like many reviewers said. Phew. Unfortunately, he felt beaten down by the upselling. Remember, he paid already... asking about an upgrade. No. Asking about additional insurance (even more than he paid for through Priceline). No. Etc. He said they asked him for multiple things and wouldn't take no for an answer and had to say no at least 3x for each thing they suggested. He understands they want to make money but he paid for what he wanted and just wanted to get the car he picked online. Period. He used words as "obnoxious" and "annoying" when describing the scenario. Needless to say, he was happy with the price from Priceline but wishes to avoid the upselling in the future. They changed the system since my last rental here in 2013. Now, Hertz is located inside the airport and a shuttle is not necessary. Getting a car with a reservation was extremely easy. I made a reservation through the Hertz app. I was contacted by text and email in the days prior to my arrival (mostly to upsell me ) but also had some important information. One important piece of information was that I could skip the lines and head directly to the car lot. There, I would find a list of names and you find your name and they tell you where your car is. I had "presidential circle" by my name which I never heard of before, but it allowed me to choose any car I wanted from two rows. We deliberated and checked out different models before finding one we wanted. It had 5 miles on it. No worries about brake and tire wear! And then we left. So easy. They scan the car and your drivers license at the exit gate. Could not have been smoother. read more

Why doesn't anyone answer the phone when you ask to speak to someone local? I called for 3 days & was charged significantly because no one would answer a phone. When calling the 800#, you can't get to a person. It isn't even an option. So when your automated system keeps attempting to charge an ADDITIONAL deposit of $200 when trying to extend the rental (I already had a $200 deposit on the car), and no one will answer the phone anywhere, why is the customer the one who pays for it?!? I just spent $587 for 6 day economy rental!!! On line it said $35/a day. But I paid approximately $100/day with no way to question the charges or even receiving a receipt. I will never use any of the many companies you hide behind (Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty.... what else?). You just took my credit card information and went on a shopping spree with no explanation. I will be taking the matter up with my bank. They don't even act like they care about the customer once they get your financial information. Worst than the lowlifes stealing identities on line. Worst car rental experience of my life. If you're contemplating renting with hertz, thrifty or dollar DO NOT do it. Picked up the vehicle it was dirty inside and out and they said they weren't able to even wash the outside. Looked like someone spilt a milkshake in the back and there were ants all over the inside of the car. Not to mention one of the tires went flat within 30 minutes of getting it. No one answered at the pick up location in Katy so I give the choice to drive the car all the way to Houston airport or Austin... I was headed to San Antonio. Finally got them to allow me pick up a new car in San Antonio. This is after of course waiting to get a spare tire put on and taking it to a maintenance shop so they can patch the tire. Get to San Antonio and they wouldn't take the vehicle. Stating I took it to an unauthorized dealer and they have no record of me getting a new car. Had to spend a bunch of time on the phone with customer service then the airport location finally got everything they needed and apologized and said I o longer owed all the additions they were previously going to charge me. New car was great (so I thought) it was at least clean on the inside and out however the next day again a flat tire. Because it was drivable they have me go to another shop. It took forever for maintenance to approve the transaction then the Hertz maintenance worker asked if I had time to get a complete inspection, oil change and a few other things done on the vehicle since I was there. WTF ... I'm like am I on Hertz payroll now? Am I getting paid for this or at least a discount or a free rental since I'm now spending more than half my vacation getting their vehicles fixed... nope nothing. Worst ever. This is now the third time renting with a hertz and each time has been horrible. And each time has resulted in me having to pick up another vehicle out of my way. Third time is NOT a charm. I've rented so many times with enterprise and have never had this experience. Worst part went to drop it off. Was told that they are closed because the person went home early then a random valet dude was like I'll drive it below with the rest of the hertz vehicles... WTF ... no I need to tell them about this experience. Someone ends up coming back after being on the phone forever. He says he's going to give me a discount but didn't. Charged me exactly the same. I will NEVER deal with Hertz again but especially their Katy, San Antonio airport or San Antonio downtown Marriott location. They are all trash. I'm surprised Marriott lets that trash take space in their building. Please recognize your Manager in San Antonio (Airport location) as the reason why I have deleted all other apps and cancelled my program affiliations with all other rental car agencies. Her name is Brittany and she is the reason I will now only rent vehicles from Hertz. I travel often for business, but this trip was due to a death in our family. We had to put the trip together in a matter of an hour and were very stressed at the time. After we reached our destination our travel plans had to change. I was concerned that this change was going to cost a lot of money, but in these kind of situations, often there is nothing you can do. After speaking with your national number and not getting any relief on the change fees, I called and spoke to the San Antonio airport center. Brittany showed genuine compassion and concern and was able to save me a substantial amount of money. This was not necessary, but I think she knows that sometimes it's about more than a dollar. She got it right and as a result, me and everyone I work with and talk to will be doing business with Hertz from here on out. Last night 1/8/24 got in late 1:30am due to weather and delays. Got to the booth and waited for my turn. The lady behind the counter was so friendly and nice, her spirit really was rubbing off on all of us there. She was quick, enthusiastic and effective. We all got a car quick after a rough day, and we're in a better mood after we walked out Really made my bad day better. Thanks! I also need to give props for here helpers too. They both were running around to get cars for each of us get us checked out efficiently. Even after the fact they were working beyond their normal hours to make sure we were taken care of. I was a little skeptical about the new AI auto scanner that scans the vehicle for damages has you exist and then again upon return. All went well no damage charges however not sure if I like that, even personal vehicles will get a small door ding or small gravel dings while driving from road conditions , I consider that normal wear and tear of every day driving. read more

Chris and Jackson from the 4th floor at Hertz' booth went above and beyond to remedy the issue I experienced with an older female Hispanic at the pick up counter on 10/26/25. All my rental experiences had been positive except for above aforementioned. Chris at the pick up booth should have been the manager or in charge of the said location instead of the so-called "manager" Ryan. I highly recommend Chris to others who are thinking about renting vehicles from Hertz, Dollar, or Thrifty ( they're all one company). The Hertz Rent-A-Car at the San Antonio airport was the most unproductive, least Professsional and disorganized attempt at a car rental agency I've ever had. I started talking to the lady behind the Hertz counter and then some other lady came up From another counter and interrupted and told me to come with her. I couldn't believe how rude she was right out the gate. She was very unprofessional, kind of demeaning/insulting and very patronizing. Not only was the car rental area disorganized and messed up but there is a consistent lack of concern about people who have time schedules and planes to catch. That's why we make plans in advance, but it doesn't seem to matter to Hertz. They do not honor coupons, they do not honor their own Internet site promises and it's a sinking ship. I absolutely wish I would have read the other reviews before renting from here. I rented through Expedia. I didn't even need the car for a full 24 hours so $44 all taxes and fees included felt like a good deal. This is relevant. A little back story: I was taking my daughter back to her dad after spending the summer with me. Our flight gets delayed. I arrive to the Hertz counter at midnight. The girl at the counter already looks annoyed so I am apologetic even though it was out of my control. Then she tells me twice she can't find my reservation. I finally just hand her my phone. Wouldn't you know it... it popped up then. Anyways... she tells me I owe $126. I am bewildered. All this stuff says optional including the insurance. For the insurance she gives me 2 prices, never alluding to "neither" as an option. Tells me its "mandatory by the state of Texas" which I found questionable since I've rented from other companies at that airport and have NEVER paid so much or for insurance because I am an insured driver so I use my own. So it's midnight, I have my kid, and I don't feel like I have a choice. I sign so I can leave. I take the escalator to the parking area. The girl that gets us the vehicle watches us come down the escalator and doesn't even try to meet us. She makes us wait. Not long but still... be proactive girl. What could you possibly be doing at midnight that was so important? She takes my paperwork, looks around, points to a car like 2 aisles over and says "Take that one" and walks away. I guess I was just more used to Wolf on the Alamo level who has been friendly every time I've been there. Anyways, I reach out to a Hertz contact I have and ask if it's normal to have additional fees tacked on and they said I had been upsold. So i reached out to Hertz customer service and ask for a refund of the difference. It all boiled down to a no since I signed and the rental was closed. I would NEVER recommend this particular Hertz to anyone ever. I would rather pay more for the customer service I've gotten at other rental companies at this airport than ever even consider using this location again. I'd rather pay for Uber or Lyft. I'd rather beg my ex-husband and his wife to pick me up. Don't waste your time or money here. read more

Had a horrific experience at Hertz in terms of the way I was treated after my supposed presidents circle reservation was lost in their own system. Ended up having my credit card maxed out by them trying to run the same deposit over and over again, listed as 'pending' charges because the behavior looked fraudulent to my bank. They were extremely dehumanizing about it, like I was planning to scam or rob them (I have two personal vehicles, I don't need a third one with a felony attached). I arrived at the Hertz location in a neck injury. Nevertheless, the office felt it was necessary to call a third person in as a precaution, a woman who sat in the back and talked to the other two employees about how disagreeable I was and how gracious they were towards such a 'nasty person ', when it was their mistake! Sixt had me in a vehicle in under 15 minutes. They were reasonable, helpful, communicative and personal. I will never give my money to Hertz again. read more

Upon arrival, my wife and I were met with an empty lot for the class we selected (compact) and no employees nearby to assist. We went to the front desk and got an employee to help. Once they got to the lot, they did not say much to us and seemed pulled in several directions at once. Eventually the employee directed us to a Mitsubishi compact SUV. Meanwhile, my co-worker, who arrived to the lot after us, was directed to a Subaru station wagon. (a much nicer vehicle) So, I asked the employee if there were other options for us. She replied that there were no other vehicles available. Once we opened the door of the Mitsubishi, we were met with a strong odor of cigarettes. My wife immediately went to get the employee to ask to change vehicles, even if it entailed a wait. Smelling like smoke during our work trip would be unacceptable. The employee came back, pointed to a Chevrolet SUV, and told us to take that one, despite not having anything available moments ago. We loaded our luggage into it and settled in only to be met with a check engine light on that didn't turn off after a couple of minutes with the ignition on. We went to get the employee a third time. She came back and just pointed to the vehicle next to that one, which was a Ford Escape. It hadn't been washed, but we didn't smell any smoke and saw no maintenance lights, so we left the lot with this one. While on the road, we discovered documents from a previous renter, a half empty pack of cigarettes in the sunglasses holder, and a brownie in the glove compartment. This vehicle was clearly not cleaned from the previous renter, despite being in the lot ready for rental. Overall, this location appeared understaffed and lacking in customer service communication skills. Many places are understaffed. That's okay as long as expectations are clearly communicated to the customer and, in this instance, they were not. I do not recommend Hertz and encourage others to avoid this location. read more

First off they would not accept my apple credit card that I made the reservation with. Which required my wife to drive 30 minutes to bring me another card. They were unwilling to help me in any way. Changing the card on file cost me $300 because they needed to reschedule the trip. When we finally got the car there was trash all over, honey wiped on the wall in the back. I want to be very clear at the outset that the people who work for Hertz are not the problem. In fact, I was greatly impressed with the efforts they made to help us. Unfortunately, the company seems to be managed by idiots. We arrived at the airport and walked up to the Hertz area ... and waited in line for over an hour while the lone clerk at their desk helped everyone in line before us. There was never any possibility of another clerk showing up to help him. Strike one. Once it was our turn and we finished at the counter, we had to walk out to the garage area to get our car. (We had reserved a "Nissan Rogue or similar".) We then ran into two other parties waiting for help there - the last two couples in front of us at the previous counter. We waited another 10-15 minutes, but all they did was point out to the row of cars and tell us to take whichever one we wanted. There were only two cars out there that were similar in size to the Rogue, so we took our pick and loaded our luggage and prepared to leave. That's when I noticed that the gas tank was almost empty. Since we had picked the option to return the car with a full tank, I stopped and went back to report it to the ONE guy working in the garage, but by that time he had been joined by a young woman who was available to help. When I explained the problem, she said we could either take a different car or she would run it "downstairs" and gas it up. We chose the latter so that we wouldn't need to unload and reload all our stuff. She took the car, returned it promptly with a full tank, and we were on our way. Unfortunately, a few hours later, after we found a restaurant and ate but before we left the area, we noticed a badly broken taillight. I wasn't sure what to do so I tried to call Hertz. The only number we had was to an automated system, and there was no option to speak to an agent, so we decided the best thing to do was return it to the airport and ask for their advice. However, once we passed through the gate we were directed to the "Return" area, so we had no choice but to turn it in and check out a different car. All of that would have gone well, but they pointed us to the only SUV they had available now (a Nissan Murano), which should have been okay. We went over and I started loading our luggage. But before I finished, it occurred to me that we should double-check it and look for damage before hopping in and driving off. My wife started walking around it and immediately told me to stop. It turned out that there was a large nail sticking out of the left front tire (which had been circled with a grease pen) and a message on the window: "DO NOT RENT - BAD TIRE". We were shocked that someone (i.e., someone from Hertz) would actually park that car in the garage area where all the 'ready' cars were parked. How did nobody catch that? So we obviously rejected that car, and when the desk guy went out to look, he came back embarrassed. He told us to wait while he went downstairs to find something for us. He came back with a big black Cadillac SUV for us, and he told us it was a free upgrade. Personally, I considered it a DOWNgrade, but I wasn't in any mood to make waves. We took the car and were on our way. We returned it a week later and assumed that was the end of it. Now, two weeks after we returned home (and three weeks after we arrived in San Antonio), we just got a letter from Hertz claiming that we never returned the first car - the one with the broken taillight. I just spent a half-hour waiting on the phone, trying to reply to them at the number they specified, only to give up for today. I am appalled at Hertz's business processes. It looks like they are overdoing the simplification of their business processes so that they can operate with very few staff. They want the customer to do all the work. They needed more clerks at the counter, they needed someone to help customers get their cars and leave on time, and they need to do a lot more at the return point. We were given a simple receipt at the original counter, but NOTHING that documented the car we ended up with, NOTHING that proves we returned the first car, and NOTHING identifying the car we actually used. If there had been a person handing us the keys to a specific car, there would be some accountability for giving us a damaged car, and accountability for trying to send us out with a flat tire. Overall, this simple one-week rental (which we have done many times in the past with other rental companies) seems to have been a big mistake. read more

Deceiving! We booked this rental car through marriot because we are ambassor elite member and thinking that we can get great deals. We were able to book standard size SUV for 1 week at $460! When we got there, surprise surprise we were told that since it's 3rd party, "they booked the wrong size". Fine. We PAID the upgrade for STANDARD SIZE SUV and the bill comes back at $600 plus $200 deposit. When we got to the parking lot, they gave us a COMPACT SIZE SUV!!! we really fought for that and eventually, gave us a standard size. Now, it's been almost a week, I noticed that the charge was still $800 and they never returned the $200. I've been trying to call them but NO ANSWER!!! HORRIBLE! Awful customer service. My fiancés flight was delayed and when I tried to pick up the vehicle at midnight I was told he needed to add my name to the reservation. I asked how to do so, they told me to call Priceline. When he called Priceline, he was directed back to Hertz which he was told via phone was currently closed. When I went back to the front desk to let them know what happened they still wouldn't help us with the reservation. I asked for a number I could call that was open and they didn't have one (I was emailed one that was not on the website a day later. Not helpful) I ended up having to take an Uber and wasted money when I could've been helped at the location better. There is a way to help customers and they didn't seem to care. When he finally arrived the next day, he was told there were tolls and he paid $70 for them. When we were done with our rental we have ZERO tolls. What a waste of money. I travel a lot for business and used to rent with Hertz. recently like for the last 5 years, this company starts falling down due to bad service, overcharging, and dishonesty. and finally their customer service play a game when you call and wait for over 20 min and when they answer they tell you they cannot hear you and decline the call. I thought its helpful for customers to share my experience with everybody and switch to other respectful company. check your receipt you will find a charge of one gallon of gas even if you fill up the returned car tank right at the entrance of their lot. it is a fraud they been doing since a while. the front desk people are the rudest i have ever seen in any business. What a nightmare! Two hours in line at San Antonio airport, despite signs saying to check in online and skip the counter. Did that, then the guy in the garage/parking lot said to wait for an email. Thirty minutes later, I check again and a new guy says you still have to go to the counter! Luckily my husband stood in line just in case. Absolute trash customer service. I prepaid for my vehicle, which means unpaid the total amount for the rental before checking in. My flight arrived at midnight. The main counter had no one there for assistance. So I was told by another car rental place to go to another location. I get to the other side and have to wait 20 mins. That's okay because I've already checked in through the app. It shouldn't take long. Get up to the counter. They told me they couldn't give me the car because my Apple card has two numbers, and I used the digital one. Like what do we need a card for anyway, I've paid full price for the rental. I say what are my options, and he says "You have to call the 1800 number." call the number, and that number sends me to another number, which sends me to another number. I tell him it's not working, he says you can cancel it. I ask him to cancel it, he says he can't. My option is to book the car again and get the refund. I will never use these fools again. Wow what a difference from Phoenix. This Hertz is organized and fast. We requested the valet service to be driven to the terminal and we didn't wait at all. We pulled up, showed the receipt for valet, I moved to the back and a staff member drove us right to the terminal. When I tried this service in Phoenix, it was an absolute disaster, so having this one go smoothly was such a pleasure! For $15 it saved me the irritation of walking to the terminal with a cast on my foot. :) read more
