If I could give less, I would. I rented a car for 8 days via Travelocity. I went to the SV office to pick it up on Friday evening. Our itinerary showed we would return to car to the SV office on Saturday evening. Which we did. On Monday after, I got an email stating they'd charged us for 10 days plus a late return fee. Because we returned on the weekend and they're not open, we were charged until Monday, plus a late fee. The manager had our itinerary that stated we would return it SV on Saturday but never mentioned the additional 2 days charge for doing so. We went outside to check the car and I specifically asked where to drop the keys since we'd be returning it on Saturday when they weren't open and he still didn't mention the additional charges for returning when they weren't open. I called the office and spoke with the manager. Instead of helping me, he ARGUED with me. I asked repeatedly why he didn't simply tell me about the additional charges for returning to SV on Saturday when we picked up the car and he ignored my question. I called someone else in their accounting department and was treated with respect and courtesy. She apologized repeatedly for the rudeness I endured while speaking with Rick. She credited my account without question or hassle. All he had to do was mention that returning the car while they were closed meant I would be charged until Monday and we would have returned the car in Santa Cruz instead but he did not. They count on people either not noticing the additional charges or not wanting to go through the hassle of pursuing the refund. We will never, EVER rent from the SV office again!!! It is definitely worth the drive to Santa Cruz to deal with an honest and respectable business. read more

Long story short: I had friends coming in from back East and each person had 3 large suitcases, 2 carry-ons, plus a guitar and I knew that my beemer couldn't handle all of that luggage! I o let give them 1 star because they picked out the perfect sized car for our trip..... We picked up at 11 am when our scheduled appointment was. The guy took 1 1/2 hours to get to us because the computer system was down! We were patient, but he brought us out to a Chrysler mini van, it was great! Luxury and had a DVD! W e were going to car camp up the highway 1 coast for the weekend! The guy talked to my boyfriend as though he were deaf or dumb! It was ridiculous, then we get told that since he changed the original vehicle we chose online, that it would cost 100$ more for the insurance! And he said he'd give us an extra day to rent the car, since the car was LATE now by 3 hours for its pick up which we scheduled online three weeks prior!!! We even got a call from the guy about the car! But if this was enterprise they would have covered the insurance fee since it's really on them for not giving us an accurate estimate! Then we bring the dang thing home, and fold the seats down and there were ants crawling everywhere! The seats, the floor, the doors! We nearly lost it then because we were already 4 hours behind schedule, plus the guy was of no help he wanted us to bring the damn thing back to him to Rhine the rest of our trip. I just raided it and then vacuumed and we packed and left (pissed off) for our trip. Then we drop the car off, and there is a different guy there to help us, but even he was super rude! And I realized later that it was lucky we didn't take the car back after an extra day, because the guy said if we had we would have been charged because their office is closed Sunday's!! Awful awful service awful awful cleaning of their cars! Spent 300$ on the car rental and we should have gone to enterprise because they were less money and kinder people! we just didn't want to drive to Santa Cruz! read more

I had a very nice experience renting from Hertz in Scotts Valley! I used AAA online travel service to book a car, got to he shop half an hour late and still Frank took very good care of me. I was most impressed that Frank inspected and made note of the car's condition, which protects me from having to be liable for dents and scratches that were already on the car. It is a small shop connected to an auto body repair shop. When they go to lunch the shop closes and if they have a rush of clients it takes time because there is a small staff. read more

I have never encountered a more incompetent work force in any retail location. Picking up the vehicle was a breeze. We were told to pick between two sedans and we made sure to ask if there was a price difference and were told no. This was a person that had come over from the adjoining Professional Touch Body Shop. I updated my email during this transaction and we leave with the vehicle (important for later) On 5/10, I return the vehicle and am told that I owe around $35. I explained that my insurance was covering the vehicle and that I should owe $0. That is when the woman started to rudely tell us that we should have taken the smaller sedan and the gentleman that told us there was no price difference was incorrect. She tells us that there is nothing that we can do and that the manager will be in on Monday to take care of this and that they will email me my receipt. I verify the email and it is in fact that incorrect email that I updated in the first transaction. Again, I give the correct email address. I did not hear anything on Monday 5/13. On Tuesday 5/14, I call this location and am told that the manager will be in on Wednesday and it has not been taken care of. Wednesday 5/15, I call this location twice. No answer. I leave a voicemail. By the late afternoon, I decide to call the adjoining body shop to see why no one is answering the phone. The man tells me that the Hertz is not open Tuesday/Thursday... I told him well I spoke to someone on Tuesday and today is Wednesday. He then goes next door and finds out that the manager Veronica is at the Santa Cruz location and gives me the number. I call this number and speak with Veronica and I am told that she already took care of the charges, I now owe $0 and that a receipt was emailed. I had checked the email (as well as the spam folder) and had not received an email. I asked if she could email the receipt to the proper email address (at this point I had already requested twice to update the email) I am told that she cannot email the receipt anymore but she can text it to me. I texted her my phone number. It is now 5/16 and I did not receive a text message from Veronica. I call the main Hertz number and am finally able to have them send me the receipt. I am highly disappointed in the service at this location. It is unorganized. it has incompetent employees and it took 6 days to resolve this issue. I will never return to this location and encourage others to go to another location. read more

I rented a car because I was having autobody work done next door at Professional Touch. Everything was groovy, guy was upbeat and said he'd give me a 10% discount since it was a week rental. Body shop was delayed, yadda, yadda, and when I returned my rental, unbeknownst to me, I was charged a late return fee of $60.00! Didn't know it until my insurance refused to reimbursement me the late fee. Contacted manager and he said he'd refund me the late fee, but it never showed up on credit card. Have tried calling the office several times, no answer, busy-signal; difficult office to make contact with - they need more help, too busy for customer service. Go elsewhere . . . read more

I rent from this location probably once every other month, mostly because I'm carrying more people than my two-seater can accommodate. Rick Foskett, the branch manager, has always taken good care of me and has provided great service. He's very accommodating (like today when I showed up well before office hours and he got me checked in and on the road immediately. I'll definitely keep renting from the SV branch. read more

Really dissapointment when I called this place and this agent flat out tells me "I cant help you"after i was needing to replace my rental. Then tells me false info that I have to contact my local hertz to book with him, among afew more false things that make me question this HERTZ EMPLOYEE. Guess he thinks Im a dumb customer that "didnt do her homework"(i had called customer service/towing prior and worked out all the details and what I had to do). Grabbed the wrong credit card on the way out of town; my wife's. The guy at the counter couldn't take the time to call the number on the back of the card to verify I'm on the account. Wouldn't take cash either. Guess they don't need any business. Got a hotel room down the street (with the same card) while my car is in the shop. Nice little vacation, but poor service from Hertz. Trying to rent from this location is a nightmare. Definitely the worst service I've ever experienced. I called two weeks in advance to reserve a full-size car to take a trip down to LA while my car was going to be in the body shop. The person I spoke with accidentally deleted my reservation the same day I called to make it. I didn't know he had done this until I showed up on my originally requested day to pickup my car. When the body shop rep and myself asked the (rude) manager what had happened to my reservation, all he could say is it was "another Rodan issue". Clearly he can't manage his employees and doesn't make any effort to train/re-train them accordingly. They had no other vehicles available aside from a tin can miniature Mitsubishi (my 3, 6' tall passengers plus luggage wouldn't even fit in it).They could not locate any other full size vehicles in Santa Cruz county. My only alternative was going to be to drive to a San Jose location to pick up a full size car (and also drive there to return it)! I ended up having to get a ride down to Watsonville, pay $199 MORE than I had planned on spending for a rental, was late for my event in Southern California and barely got out to our hotel in time for late check-in. I will never rent from Hertz again. Save yourself the hassle and go to an Enterprise, at least they treat you with respect. read more

Worst experience ever! I use Professional Touch for my auto body needs (they are great, btw) and even though Hertz shares a parking lot with the auto body shop, I will go to Santa Cruz for a different rental car in the future. I have used the Scotts Valley Hertz about 5 times and while the service is almost always grumpy and the cars aren't very clean, I never felt inclined to write a review until my last experience. I expected and experienced the typical grumpy girl at the front and the rental experience was "fine", typical 2.5 out of 5. However, I was then charged extra for a fee I'm still unsure what it's for. I was told they tried to reach me for "a month" to let me know my insurance didn't cover something but they couldn't reach me. Please know I searched all my incoming call logs and they never tried to reach me... The extra fee was close to $100 and came almost 2 months after I rented the car. The gal was rude and dismissive when I tried to find out what the fee was for. If there was something my insurance didn't cover, fine but this still isn't clear to me and my insurance company said they didn't decline any fees or costs. BEWARE of this place and if you must use them, keep an eye on your credit card for extra fees! read more

I scarcely know where to begin! I booked online​ for a Yaris while my car was in the shop, one-week​ rental. The price was approx. $160.00 per week. I get there to pick up the car one hour early than the 2:00p. ​pick-up time I entered online. The young lady says she will have to charge me $10.00 additional for early pick-up. Really! Then she states that there is an additional $10.00+ license plate fee for weekly rentals. None of this is disclosed online. I take the Yaris, drive it for three days and my daughter notices that the bumper is flapping in the breeze. I take the Yaris back. The young lady states that this happens frequently with this car (why they rent defective cars, go figure). She trades the car out for another compact. I drive this one for two days and all of a sudden the tire pressure light comes on. I take it to the gas station and all of the tires are at the ​correct pressure. I take it back to Hertz and they discover a nail in the tire for which they want to charge me $44.00 to replace. After a major miscommunication with manager Rick, who thought I said the "car was stolen" as opposed to "the tire should not be my responsibility​," I explain that this comes under the heading of "cost of doing business." And, that I don't agree with the tire being my responsibility especially after having to deal with the defective Yaris. He does me the great courtesy of knocking the tire down to $22.00. Rather than flog a clueless manager, I agree to the $22.00. They then trade me into a Chevy Malibu. I drive it for two hours until my kid puts their backpack in the trunk and then can't close the trunk. I take it back and stand around waiting (as I did with the previous vehicles) while they try and figure it out. You guessed it, they had to trade me into yet another car. This Hertz location is a major cluster cluck. The personnel​ on site are not adequately trained in how to deal with a situation where everything goes wrong and what to do to make the situation better. Further, they don't have any authority to make decisions that would ameliorate​ the problems and make the customer happy. Rick keeps that all to himself​ using it sparingly. He is absolutely oblivious to customer service and focused more on how to minimize the immediate dollar loss rather than making sure the customer is happy and will return to rent again. In words Rick can understand...he doesn't see the big picture for success over time! My recommendation is to rent a pair of roller skates if that's all that is available before going to this Hertz location. I notice that this location has a bunch of horrible reviews. Apparently, that is of no consequence to Hertz management because they have not addressed their former customers concerns. Which, speaks volumes about them as a company! read more

I keep reading these terrible reviews on Hertz rental cars. I personally have had the best experiences dealing with this company. The only time there was an issue, i had booked online only minutes prior to arriving. When i got there, they didnt have the full size car i reserved. Unable to adjust my reservation, since i made it thru orbitz, or expedia,...(cant recall which) they gave me a smaller car but for the same price of a full size. I was terribly annoyed by this. They said any Hertz location would trade it out for me. I was still ticked because it was the weekend & most locations arent open + i didnt have time to unload & reload a car. However when i went to another Hertz, they gave me a small SUV, for the same price i reserved the full size car for. And it was actually a nice upgrade. I feel they corrected the error in style & that is what customer service comes down to; if there is a problem, how do they go about making it better. I felt they did me right. Never had any other issues with any location. I believe Brianna (?) in scotts valley and Stephanie in Santa Cruz both deserve a shout out for a job well done. read more

It's in the neighborhood, the people are nice, and I've never had a problem with their vehicles or service. Had basically the same experience as Georganna H. below--even though we had a reservation they told us that they not only didn't have a car for us, but that it was our fault for not calling them directly (even though there are no directions suggesting that this is a necessary step). This was the worst experience of my life! We were involved in an accident that totaled our car and while we were waiting on the settlement from the insurance, we rented a car from the Capitola Hertz and the downtown Santa Cruz Hertz. Weekly rental was $280.00 and I signed up to be a gold member because of the great service. I was told from the Santa Cruz office that everything i wanted from the previous rental was loaded in their system and got that rental within 5 minutes. Well, that wasn't true in Scotts Valley. I went to the Scotts Valley site to rent a car and they tried to charge me well over $600.00!!! I had to start over with the process and walked out after the first estimate which took 20 minutes. They came out to the parking lot and told me to come back in and offered me a rate of approximately $360.00/week. That was a scam too and if i had my previous receipts I would have been much smarter on the options I was offered. My bad. They lied about the gas option and I was eventually charged $430.00 for the week. They were so not willing to work with me and I feel like they want to scam you because they have to give free car rentals because they are affiliated with the auto body shop next door. read more

I called and they said they were all booked no cars available. After work I walked by and there was one car/cancellation. I said I only wanted one day rental. He refused!@! He said I would have to rent for the whole weekend. Friday to Monday $400. I said I only needed it one day or 24 hours. he said no way!! Is this normal? This is my first Yelp review in many years but I had to post on this one. I have used this service several times over the years and my experience has always been less than professional but it's convenient to use them while getting auto body work done next door at Professional Touch. This time, the gal at the front was unprofessional in front of me, with her dialogue with the gal from Professional Touch (I thought that was odd and it was awkward for me but I tried to ignore it) but I'm writing this review because out of the blue I got a decent-sized charge on my debit card months after I turned in the rental car - totally unexpected. I called to follow up I was basically blown off, being told the manager had to "close out the transaction". I still don't know what the charge was for. Good thing I had money in my account! I highly recommend Enterprise in Santa Cruz, they are super professional and they provided me a ride to/from the Pro Touch body shop. I have no affiliation to them but I will definitely use them moving forward and recommend you to too. Stay clear of this place! read more

I created this yelp account just to write a review for this place. I have rented a car from Hertz before but this was in Santa Cruz and the staff were all great. Very helpful and friendly. Now, Hertz in Scotts Valley, I got a call from an employee there named Rick I believe, he was very rude, not very good service, he kept raising his voice at me. He was not very good at answering my questions he was just saying he didn't know and that he was very busy. He was in a rush to hang up. Overall, the renting service was only good when I first got their car. Rhodin helped me, he was great help throughout the rental process. Rick made the experience not so great at the end. I really did not like his customer service, I did not like the way I was being spoken to. He needs to be kinder, he does not make Hertz in SV look good and he makes me not want to rent from them again. read more

Worst call experience and most rude personnel I have ever encountered. I made a reservation via the internet on Hertz.com. I walked into the office in Scotts Valley and was asked brusquely "What do you want?" I told him I wanted to rent a car and had a reservation. The clerk asked if I called first to confirm they had cars. I said I didn't know that was necessary. He started yelling that the reservation does not confirm they have cars. Nothing in the confirmation I received said anything about calling ahead to confirm. I have never heard of having to do that. The worst was how angry and rude the clerk was. I will never rent from this office again and maybe never from Hertz. I went down to Enterprise and was able to get a car with no problems and the clerks were actually courteous. The office was further away but well worth the drive. Not sure what there problem was but I recommend avoiding the Scotts Valley Hertz office like the plague! read more

I will never attempt to do business with this horrible shop again. It's frustrating because they are right next to the best body shop in town and it would be convenient to pick up a rental while my car was in the shop. They carry the oldest most run down cars I've ever seen. I asked before I signed the paperwork if the car had bluetooth, was told yes, then when the car arrived it was a old beater without bluetooth. They make you fill out all the paperwork before they bring the car up so you're already on the hook for it. When I mentioned there was no bluetooth, the manager told me they didn't have any cars with Bluetooth. Really in CA where it's illegal to use your phone without Bluetooth! Turns out he was just a liar because the next car to come up for someone else had Bluetooth. After an hour and half arguing with the manager, I decided to not rent a car at all because I didn't trust the lying jerk at the counter and was told I couldn't cancel and they don't have the ability to void a contract at that location. Still fighting to get the charge off my credit card for a car I never rented. Worst experience I've ever had with any business! read more
