The only reason I'm rating Hertz 1 is that there is no 0 or negative numbers. We had a reservation for a long term rental to be picked up on June 1 and returned on September 30. A few days before we were to pick the car up, my husband happened to be by the pick up location and noticed that the building was shut down and the Hertz sign was no longer in place. He called Hertz and asked where we should pick up the car on Saturday, June 1. He was given an alternate pick-up address which turned out to be a truck pick up location only AND when we arrived there was a note stuck on the door which read 'Closed on Saturdays until further notice'. We then spent the next hour on hold with Hertz trying to figure out what to do. Once they answered, the only options were to pick a car up at the airport at double the cost OR void the contract which started Saturday, June 1 and start a new contract starting Monday, June 3. We choose option 2 and went to pick up the car Monday, June 3 at which time we are told having 2 drivers on the car costs $13/day extra. However, the agent said if we signed up as a Gold Member the $13 fee gets waved. We started to sign up, she said there was no need. Just finish the contract, sign up as a Gold Member and call an 800# to apply the difference. You can probably guess what happened based on the stellar service received thus far. We called the office and were told that it would only apply to future rentals. We asked to speak to a manager. There were none available but we could leave our number and hear from someone in 72 hours. Wow. All I can say is do not rent a car from Hertz. It is frustration from start to finish!! read more

On the evening of my insurance claim, I made a reservation for a full-sized sedan. The representative was very friendly and professional and told me they would have a full-sized sedan ready for me at 8:00AM the following business day. When I arrived at the Hertz location, there was no such car waiting, and I was down-sized into a smaller car. The agent at the location offered to call me if a full-sized sedan came in, and I agreed. In addition, I was offered additional rental coverage. When I explicitly asked if this coverage was charged as a flat fee for the entire rental or on a per-day basis, I was told it was a flat fee, so I agreed. The following day, the agent called stating that they received a full-sized sedan in, but it smelled smoky and he did not want to make me have to deal with that. He told me that they were expecting another vehicle in later that day and asked if I wanted to wait for it, I agreed. A few hours later, I received a call from the agent stating that the car was ready for me to swap out. I arrived at the location, and traded the rentals out, but when I got into the replacement rental, it smelled like a tobacco shop. I was already running late for a family gathering, so I decided to call them later. When I got back from visiting family, I called the Hertz location where I picked up the car from to request a swap due to the smoke smell. I was told that they did not have any full-sized vehicles available, but that they would call me if one came in. I never received a call. The next day, I called again. After being told that they never got any in, I asked if I could trade it in at another Hertz location, and the agent said yes. I called every Hertz location in the Saint Louis, MO area and received the same response, "give us your number and we will call you when one comes in." I never received a call from any location. Finally, upon returning the vehicle, I was informed that the additional coverage I purchased was charged on a per-day basis, and that the total bill was more than $100 more than what I expected. The agent offered to knock a couple days off of the rental for my inconvenience. I informed him that while I appreciated that, it was by no means enough to make up for the misinformation I was given - especially since I explicitly asked if it was charged on a per-day basis. The agent then remarked that he could always put the two days back on my bill. I then asked him to just finish the paperwork so that I could leave. This has easily been the absolute worst car rental experience that I have ever heard of, let alone be involved with. I cannot recommend Hertz to anyone, and if I am ever unfortunate enough to need a rental through State Farm again, I will fight tooth-and-nail to use any rental company besides Hertz. read more

Wow what a dumpster fire of a business. We have had a rental lined up for two months. My reservation was for 5:00 in the afternoon. Luckily we were about 40 minutes early because apparently the location closed at 4. I was able to catch the attention of one of the employees through the window, she mouthed "we are closed". I then said I have a reservation for 5 to pick up a car. Another employee then came to the door explaining that they are closed...no kidding. After showing him my reservation he then was upset that he now had to do his job. He acted like I was inconveniencing him. So now he asks what king of car. I said a mid size suv. He said he did t have one. Just a mini van and a Chevy spark. He then proceeded to do the worst car wash on the planet said that's all he could do and sent me on my way. Here is the best part after contacting hertz they told me I could exchange my vehicle at the natural bridge location. So, we drive there, 30 minutes away to be told they don't have a car either. After driving home I then thought well I'll just go and exchange it in the morning and start our vacation a little later. NOPE, guess what? They are closed! So if I hadn't shown up early to inconvenience these poor employees I would have not had my rental! What kind of business is this?!! Worst company I have ever experienced. Terrible policies for helping compensate for expenses incurred due to broken down rental including hotel accommodations to stay over night in order to exchange the rental. The customer service person at airport was rude. I have been opening tickets for fair compensation. I have been nice to everyone. They tell me they can't do anything more for me. The team that handles the decision don't accept calls. Leaving the frontline helpless quoting the the policy is $250.00. Well I paid out of my pocket $611.49 and on top of that we missed vacation day. What should have been a fun vacation with 7 ladies turned out to be a Hertz nightmare. read more

Underage renter here, I tried to book a car with Priceline and they booked me with budget (despite originally saying enterprise who I knew would rent 18-20) I didn't realize I booked with the wrong company until the day I was traveling, well after calling almost every single car rental agency around me, asking if they would rent to me and if they had any cars available to young renters etc for HOURS I finally got ahold of this location and to my enthusiastic surprise they not only would rent to me but also had cars available and I was able to pick up about as soon as I got off the phone! If I could give them no stars I would. I turned my car in and never got any receipts or anything stating any amount that I owed them. Here we are 12 days later and I get a charge on my account that put me in the negative. I have contacted both the store and customer service about this and the store won't do anything. They have no customer care knowledge what so ever. They never gave me any notification (no phone call, email, letter, ANYTHING) stating they were going to take money out of my account. I will NEVER EVER give my business to this company again and I will make sure all my family and friends steer clear of them too. We made a reservation for a minivan well in advance. On the date of pick up was informed that my reservation would not be honored because there were no minivans available irrespective of my advance reservation. On site management refused to offer comparable vehicle. I have since made 7 phone calls, been transferred 6 times, emailed, tweeted and left messages for area management all to no avail. My family and I have been left stranded by Hertz and their pathetic customer service. Never again, and you should stay far away too! read more

When I reserved my rental, I told the agent at the Green Park office that I didn't know if I would need the car round trip for a trip to Memphis, or just one-way. I asked him the best way to handle this, and was advised to rent it round trip, and to call within two days if I needed to change it to one-way. Nothing was said about additional charges if I made that change. So we reserved a six-day rental of a minivan for $363. After one day, we found that we only needed the car for one way. When I called the office to make the change, I was told that there would be a $500 upcharge, but it might we waived if I could find a Memphis Hertz office that needed a minivan. The Memphis agent that I called told me over the phone that I could turn the car in (after two days) for $273. But when we arrived at the office, we were told the cost would be $873. In the end we paid about $630, or about $350 more than the $273 price that was quoted to us. So, essentially, I was mislead about the cost by Hertz personnel at two locations, and the Hertz Corporation refused to make it right. read more

Worst experience ever. Car was filthy and had maintenance required light on. The car was older and not in good shape. No walk around before leaving. Just handed me the keys and pointed to it in the parking lot. Kept trying to charge my credit card when they knew insurance was paying. Refused to work with insurance or body shop on extending approval when needed or to even contact me. My notice that an approval extension was needed was a notice from my credit card company. No courtesy call from Hertz. I wouldn't recommend this location to anyone and will NEVER rent from here again. read more

Ben and Shane went out of their way to take up 3 hours of my time .... from being 45 mins late in picking me up to go to their office, to making me what while they serviced other customers, to giving me in accurate information and charging me more than they quoted, to making me wait while they drove to a gas station to put gas in the car. I even emailed two of the general managers for help, and to date have not been contacted. I wish I would have looked at the reviews for this location before using them. It's obvious they have issues and do not offer quality or professional service; more like lazy "I couldn't give a crap" service. I called hertz the night before to confirm and they asked me if I could pick up the car tonight seeing as I was in the emergency room I told them I would be in either tonight or tomorrow morning, the man I spoke to said that was fine. After being rear ended, I made a reservation with Hertz to have them pick me up from the auto body shop 2 weeks in advance. When I called the Lindbergh office they said they could meet me at the auto body shop in the city. I scheduled pick up for 4:15. On the day I dropped my vehicle off no one was there at 4:15. At 4:30 I called and was placed on an indefinite hold. My husband called and spoke to someone at the Lindbergh location. This agent stated he was coming to pick us up. My husband pointed out he was late and hadn't even left yet. The agent stated he had the appointment scheduled for 4:35. The office is 20 minutes from the shop so even if the appointment was scheduled at 4:35 and he had not left he was going to be late. In the mean time the auto body shop called the downtown location for another person and checked on my reservation. They told him they saw the reservation but were not sure which location was picking us up. Reassuring to say the least. At 5:00 no one still was at the shop and the shop was closing. I called the Lindbergh office again. They stated that the downtown location was picking me up and should be there soon. I pointed out that they were late and now the location I was using had changed. He said I must have been told incorrectly. I told him I wanted to know the name of who was picking me up. They could not provide that. When I called the downtown location no one answered. I ended up having my insurance transfer the rental to Enterprise who got me in a car in less than 20 minutes. I will NOT use Hertz again. This was my worst rental experience. read more

My daughter was unfortunately involved in two accidents, both not her fault, within three months. Both times we were sent to Hertz for a rental car. Both times we were told we do not have any cars available but have several coming in. Will have a car by 3:30. Both times no car at 3:30. Just called to make sure they had a car. No car. Will have one at 11:00. If you are a rental car agency, how can you not get a car for someone in 24 hours. How many hours of work do we need to miss before we will get a car. I have been patiently waiting for a new car now going on a week. they gave me a Mazda3 which is a nice car but not nice for a family of 4. I told them when I picked it up that this would not do considering my everyday car is a Ford Escape. PROMISED they would have two full size cars returned that evening. Heard nothing that night. Called next day had the same story told. Actually I've had that same story told to me everyday (6 days in a row). Our car was totaled yesterday and Hertz was recommended by State Farm, all paperwork sent through. We went to pick up the rental car this morning and had a horrible experience. There were only two cars to choose from, both too small to fit three people in the back. We were the only customers in the place and there were two employees. I explained our needs, three kids in back and trunk for sports bags. Said they had nothing. I asked if they had other locations and she said yes and I could call them if I wanted. While my husband worked on the hertz ordeal, I walked over to enterprise. They had a lobby full, computers were down and we're still more helpful and accommodating than hertz. We paid more to go through enterprise because of the service and availability of cars. Will not be returning to hertz. read more

Never use this store. I was charged for fees that I declined and charged $19.50 for a fuel plan when I was asked if I wanted the $1.97 plan. When I saw that I had a pending charge of $111 that I did not agree to I called and they were very unhelpful. I was told it would take 2 days to refund me the money. It is still pending on my account which makes those funds unavailable to me. The stickers on the license plate are not valid but when I told the manager about it his reply was "They're fine". I firmly believe this store charges extra fees on purpose and knows exactly what they are doing. When a customer is dissatisfied, a manager should make it right. I don't have much good to say about this location. Lazy employees for sure. On my first attempt to rent a car with Hertz this location gave my rental to someone else. I even had a confirmation number....but all the clerk could say was "it didn't make any difference...the car was given to another customer". So what good does it do to have a confirmation number? On my second rental, they had a car (yayyy), but sadly the car wasn't ready. I had the reservation for 5 days prior to picking up the car, but at 8 am when I arrived, the employees had to pull the car out of the lot, vacuum it and wash all the windows, etc. All the while, I'm standing there with my luggage in the middle of the parking lot, waiting and waiting for them to "do their thing". I needed to leave immediately for my destination but I had to wait for the employees to do their job that they should have done PRIOR to my arrival. If I could switch to a different rental company, such as AVIS, I would..... but I am stuck with what my company provides. read more

Horrible experience!!! Staff do not know what customer service is. The vehicle was prepaid two months in advance and they charged me again at the counter at a higher rate! It still hasn't been resolved, as they want to credit me the lower amount!!! I was told they would give me an upgrade, but after we walked around the lot, they couldn't find one? I was promised free satellite radio (which was never turned on, even after I called the next day to remind them). I was told they would give me a free day for my inconveniences, which never happened. I rented a car while my own car was being repaired. I had it one day and the rear tire kept losing air so the next day I drove back to exchange it. First they said they'd "check" the tire. When they returned they told me it was fine and just needed air. For the second time I explained that I had put air in it four times and each time it lost air. I finally had to just insist they get me another car. They did, but it was on empty so they said I wouldn't be responsible for gas. I returned that car with about $20 worth of gas still in it. Later that month I received my credit card statement and Hertz had charged me $35, so I called. I was told that they charged me $9.99 a gallon for filling the first defective car! I explained the situation and the sales person said his manager would call me within twenty minutes. No one ever called me back, even after another call. Ridiculous rip-off, especially since the first car was defective, I gave them $20 worth of gas in the second car, and I was never told about being charged $9.99 a gallon for gas when I had only driven the car 20 miles! Worst experience ever, staff is very rude and unprofessional!! Cars are filthy they don't even bother to clean the insides out before the next person gets it. State Farm sent me there because they're paying while my SUV is in the shop. The first vehicle they gave me was so disgusting and smelled so bad I almost vomited. I complained to Hertz but they didn't care told me they didn't have any other cars, so I contacted State Farm to handle it. On day 2 Hertz brought me a small SUV that in order to sit in the front sit and not hit your knees on the dash the seat literally touches the back seat. (but it's supposed to fit 5 people...I think not) Again the inside was so dirty there were actual feet print on the inside windshield. There were dry skin cells all over the dashboard!! GROSS!!!! Luckily it has leather seats because I put 2 pair of gloves on and used a container of Clorox wipes sprayed the car down with 1/2 bottle of febreze and put beach towels to cover the seats. Bottom line is if you care for your health don't go to HERTZ!!!!!! read more
