Put in a rough spot, I wasn't exactly looking forward to paying to rent a car even knowing it would be reimbursed later on. I was lucky enough to get loaned a vehicle just hours after taking a car from Hertz which they graciously agreed to charge for the next day. Since I had only used the car for a couple hours, Hertz has won a customer for offering to void the entire transaction because they understood that it wasn't the need that I believed it was. I made a reservation with this location and two hours prior to the reservation. I was called to be told that the car wasn't available. , I understand that these things happen. But the person who called to tell me was extremely rude, yelled at me for not picking up my phone (although I returned the call in 7 minutes), lied about the number of times he tried to reach me, accused me of not being from the Des Moines area because of my area code overall had the worst customer service I really ever seen. I would've understand a simple, " I'm really sorry but we overbooked and don't you want. I was charged an additional 19.98 in fuel after returning the vehicle full of fuel. Customer service very hard to find through all the hassle and there is no one to speak to. I was on hold for 17 mins before hanging up the phone. I did not authorize any extra fuel charges on my card and will be disputed through my CC. Do not recommend this service at all. I feel lied to and very unhappy about my experience. When you are down in a tuff spot and in need of help Hertz will take avantage of this and push you further under the water. read more

Scam artists. Firstly besides the fact they gave me an unsafe car when I returned from a trip they make sure to charge you for gas regardless if you filled it up. Guys inside will pretend to be your bros but the second you leave they're running one over on you. Save yourself the frustration and go right down the street to enterprise. I had a reservation for noon and when I arrived at noon, the door was locked. Although there were two employees inside, they refused to help me, despite my prepaid rental. This is the most most unprofessional office I have ever tried to rent from. Absolutely avoid them at all costs. read more

Do not waist your time with these people no matter how cheap the rental car is. I was rented a Ford Focus and got a great deal for $34 a day and when I got there I was told they had no compacts and they gave me a 2020 Ford Fussion with 65,000 miles and the dirties seats I have ever seen in a rental car and this location closed right after I got to the vehicle. The car began to misfire after about 20 miles and I contacted Hertz and opened a case. I was told to return the car to the airport but I did not think it would make it there so after a hour I was bad at the Hertz rental location I got it from and dropped it off. I had the rental car for 3 days and used it about a hour and I have still not gotten my money back (These people told me I would have to take it up with Hertz to get my money back they cannot refund anything locally). Do not waist your time or money with this location and I would not suggest Hertz in general. read more

Made reservation online and received a reminder email 2 days before pickup. When I arrived I was told they called the previous day (Friday) and left a voicemail that they did not have anything available I rechecked my phone and didn't see any missed calls or messages. What number did they call? He couldn't find it. Is there any other location nearby that might have one? No, they wouldn't help them, he says. Do they have anything else? I'd reserved a standard SUV but would have been ok with a larger one or maybe a van or sedan- maybe an extended cab truck. They did have a mustang which would not hold 4 on a long drive so I couldn't accept that. I'm so bummed that I didn't think to check reviews here first before booking. They have clearly earned the 2 star average. My weekend is ruined as no options are available for Sat pickup with reasonable rates at the last minute. read more

I had a reservation at 8:45am and John decided to have his employee pick me up at 9:20, after I called looking for them. Instead of making it right, John and the other person had me on speaker and were very rude and called me a liar. I would rather walk than EVER deal with this company again. Amazingly poor customer service skills. It would have been easy to make this situation right, but instead of working toward that end, their egos and pride got the best of them, in my opinion. read more

I wish I could give this review minus 5 stars. Do not use this rental place if you need to rent a car. You will be sorry. Trust me. This is the worst car rental place I've ever used. They are a bunch of crooks and liars. I was in a minor car accident a couple of months ago and had to take my car in to get some body work done. So I needed to rent a car while I was without my car. My auto body place recommended Hertz. I should have felt nervous when I walked in. The three guys behind the counter lacked an air of professionalism and looked like they might have flunked out of high school ten years ago. I really didn't care that much about the place, though, because the other driver's insurance company was paying for my car rental. When I got my rental car, I checked for dents, scratches and marks outside of the car. I drove away and a few miles later, the low fuel light came on. It didn't occur to me to check if the tank was full because their policy was that all the cars came with a full tank. The tank was empty and I barely made it to a gas station. So I put gas in and drove to work. If I had't been in a hurry to get to work, I would have turned around and driven back to Hertz. When I got to work, I called Hertz and told them what happened. They told me I could drive back there and they could fill the tank. I told them I wasn't driving all the way across town just so they could fill the tank. I asked them if it would be ok if I just returned the car without the tank full and they said that would be fine. So I kept the car for four days and returned it with about a quarter of a tank full. When I returned it I explained the situation again about the gas tank and the guy said that was fine. I asked for a receipt or something printed showing that I wouldn't be charged for the gas tank not being full. He said he couldn't print anything but he pointed to his computer screen and showed me that it said zero balance. I had a bad feeling, but I accepted it. So fast forward to now. I get a bill in the mail from Hertz's collections department saying that I owe $42.46 for a fuel purchase option that I never purchased. The insurance company paid for everything except for that. I called the toll-free number and spoke to someone about it and he said I signed up for it and he couldn't do anything about it. So then I spoke to his supervisor and she did some checking. She said the box was checked that I signed up for the fuel purchase option that if I didn't return the car with a full tank I had to pay that fee. I told her I didn't sign up for that, what happened and what the guy said when I returned the car, but she said there were no notes in the system about it. So now I'm stuck paying the fee. I think the guy checked the box after I returned the car. They are so shady and dishonest! Don't ever use them. read more

I haven't rented from Hertz for many years until recently. I was a faithful customer who always enjoyed the best customer service, the best price, and the best experience with Hertz Recently, the last three times I've book a car. I have been informed on arrival that all of the cars are sold out and they have nothing for me to drive out of there unfortunately not only did this stop my plans. I also was out of the money that I spent to get there by Uber round-trip the representative at the counter was very dismissive and rude when I called him on the phone as the 800 number rep advised me to do in order to get some type of a credit or reimbursement for the monies that I was out of for the Uber ride the rep claimed that he called me to tell me that there were no cars available before I got there, but I didn't answer the phone. this is ludicrous. This is a flat out lie and very disheartening to see how different things are with this new management that they have at this location Hertz claims to be big on customer experience customer service. This location is not only giving me a bad experience but it's making me want to turn everyone else away from there that I know ironically the Uber driver that took me said the same thing happened to him when he booked the car and they had nothing there for him to drive often the parking lots are always full of rentals the last time I called before going to see if they were cars available. I was told that the only cars that they had available we're going for $500 a day, but I had a reservation for prior and it was not 500 a day not even 500 a week when I referenced my reservation he asked my name and he told me oh no we don't have any cars available ;after he just told me that he did have cars available at the outrageously high price. The two girls working this morning at the Urbandale, IA location on 100th, CLEARLY didn't want to be there, nor did they talk nicely to each other or the guests. They were snotty and snarky. They didn't make eye contact. It felt like a burden to be there. It's uncomfortable as a customer to be in that environment. Also, ridiculous policy regarding credit vs debit cards. Can I give a negative rating? First and foremost, they don't answer the phone. So much so that it redirects to their corporate call center. They didn't have a car ready, which made for a late morning to work. When they did locate a car, it was a crappy Nissan Sentra with transmission issues that smelled terrible. Felt like a go-kart. Then, worst of all, customer service. Was told that it would be picked up at the auto shop I left it at. So when I dropped it off, I called hertz and they said "leave the key with the front desk." When I explained that they didn't accept that liability, Anthony didn't seem to like my answer. Couldn't have been more rude, and absolutely horrible customer service on his part. I rent National for work, and will never rent Hertz again, even if another insurance company is footing the bill. DO NOT rent from Hertz, especially this location. read more

Car was to be dropped of to me between 11am and 11:15am. It is now 12pm and I can't get anyone to answer the phones, I have called at least 5 times. I have called the 1800 number and they were not able to get in touch with anyone at the location. This is very poor service. read more

Really bad experience. First, I call to setup the reservation and the phone rings for a few minutes until someone even answered. No holding or answering machine. Second, I call ahead of time to be picked up twice. The second time saying I will be at the location in ten minutes. They said no problem and then end up making me wait almost an hour at the body shop until someone finally got there. Place I took my car said this is very common with Hertz. Finally, when they asked what car I would want I said it doesn't really matter only thing was that I'm really tall and don't want a small car. So of course they picked out a Toyota carols that I barely fit in. Safe to say I don't recommend this place to anyone. read more

I am a frequent car renter and this is the worst I've ever been to. They charged me for eight days even after I returned it after two days due to a change in work travel plans. Their Impala had the honor of being the first car I've ever driven with a clunk in the transmission starting from a stop. The service personnel are rude. All I can say is that I have a new appreciation for their local competition and am all the happier I did not make my recent car purchase here. read more

Had to rent a car from here because someone tboned my car in the last ice storm so when I returned it with 3/4 of a tank left in it they charged me $90.00 to fill the tank and since to ticket was closed they couldn't recalculate to see if they were wrong. Who charges $9.99 a gal of gas? I will never rent from here again and I rent cars for work 5 to 6 times a month. Completely a rip off. Go to enterprise up the street they only charge $ 3.49 a gallon if you forget to fill it up. read more

Super impressed. First time renting from hertz (100th st Urbandale). I'm usually a (frustrated) weekly customer at enterprise (100th st Urbandale). I have already decided to use hertz again next week and I haven't even left for my trip. Oliver was nice and helpful the whole experience. First I was picked up early (as opposed to late). I made a reservation and was given a rental on time! (Early actually) reserved the same type of car as usual and it's going to be about $20/$30 cheaper! Offered to send my invoice immediately so I wouldn't have to worry about it. I'm happy with my service and hope they know I'm thankful!!! read more

I never was impressed by Hertz, esp. during the "OJ" years & most definitely after! But the price beat my usual, Enterprise this time. I had to call to remind them to pick me up. They never told me there was a $200 deposit on my Discover. In fact, when I asked Tim, he said they only charged me $180...NOT!!! Then Tim laughed at me when I told him I couldn't take a red car-my only superstition but they are bad luck for me! After a few dozens miles, I really found the Sonata awesome & am actually trying to buy one. It would have been nice if one of the guys had shown me all the bells & whistles-I drive a 2003 Taurus. Anyway, right around Ottumwa, I felt a weird, short, sharp on my right abdomen & thought it was my system mad about the Coke Zero on an empty stomach! NO! When I stopped at the Steak-n-Shake in Canton, that area had a big bump and very red. Long story short-spider bit! Got infected-I'm very allergic- 1 ER visit, 2 UC's and 2 Drs. Much pain-ruined by weekend! I hadn't seen my IL relatives & friends in 11 years and this trip was to celebrate my 57th birthday. My friend who saw it 4 hours after, couldn't believe the tissue was necrotizing already! When I asked the Urbandale Mgr. (via note on car) to call me Monday a.m., asap, he called after 3 pm. I just wanted him to bomb the car before it was re-rented: I didn't accuse them or ask for a refund, etc.. I just didn't want next person to go through what I did. HE HUNG UP ON ME!!! read more
