I am extremely disappointed with my recent experience at the Hertz location inside Union Station in Washington, DC. I arrived 15 minutes before my 2:00 p.m. reservation only to be told there were no vehicles available and that I was fifth on a waiting list. This begs the question: what is the purpose of a reservation if a vehicle is not available at the reserved time? After waiting about 15 minutes, I asked if someone could help locate another Hertz location with available vehicles. I was told to do that myself. I was also unable to reach a live representative through the Hertz customer service line. I later asked how many customers ahead of me were waiting specifically for an SUV, the vehicle I had reserved, and was told I was next in line. Great! About 10 to 15 minutes later, an SUV was returned. When I simply asked if it was mine, the representative raised her voice and told me to "just wait" and let them "figure everything out." Moments later, another customer requested an SUV and was immediately given one. When I reminded the representative that I had been told I was next, she yelled that the other customer had paid an additional $50. At no point was I offered the same option or informed that an upgrade fee would make another vehicle suddenly available. I asked to speak with the supervisor after waiting nearly an hour. Rather than listening to my concerns, he became argumentative and dismissive. When I said I did not need to hear a defensive explanation, he replied, "Well, you're going to," and then with a tantrum told his employees, "She doesn't want to listen to me, so I won't listen to her." Wow. As a frequent Hertz customer and Gold Plus Rewards President's Circle member, I expected better. Even another customer was told that his Gold status "meant nothing" because there were no vehicles. A simple text or call advising customers of the vehicle shortage could have allowed us to make alternate arrangements. Instead, customers were left waiting without communication and treated discourteously when asking reasonable questions. Vehicle shortages happen. Disrespectful customer service should not. The lack of communication, inconsistent handling of available vehicles, and unprofessional conduct by both the representative and supervisor made this one of the worst rental experiences I have had. I will not rent from the Union Station location again as long as this level of management and customer service remains in place. read more

I had a disappointing experience with SIXT that I think others should be aware of. I reserved a standard gasoline vehicle because I am not familiar with hybrid or electric cars. At pickup, I was told my vehicle was unavailable and was given an "upgrade," but it was not clearly explained that the car operated as a hybrid. When the car made no engine sound, I reasonably thought it was not working. I contacted customer service and was initially told to return the vehicle, which caused confusion and delay. Only later was I told it was functioning normally as a hybrid. Because of this lack of clear explanation and conflicting guidance, I missed a scheduled medical appointment. I contacted customer service multiple times and attempted to resolve the issue. The final resolution offered was a $15 voucher, which did not reflect the impact of the situation. This experience highlighted poor communication at pickup and inconsistent customer support. I would recommend that future customers ask very specific questions about the vehicle type and operation before leaving the lot. read more

Horrible experience at the Hertz in Union station. The mini van I rented was not ready when the rental contract began and I had to wait for the car to be cleaned. The Hertz staff also did not check the road worthiness of the van and one of the tires was 12 lbs low on air. While both of these issues were eventually solved at the pickup, it was frustrating and the staff really did not seem to give a crap about customer service/experience. The most disturbing issue is they have bilked me for $199.73 for a bogus fuel charge. The van was only driven 36 miles and returned full because the gas gauge did not move. There was no need to fuel it. Hertz charged me for 17 gallons of gas at $11.63 per gallon for an overnight rental that was driven exactly 36 miles. Do not rent from this location and tell your friends not to either. Hertz refuses to refund the money because I do not have a fuel receipt for a van that did not need fuel. This is a scam and needs to be looked at. It is clear that Hertz is using this to pad their profits by up charging customers for fuel on return and then refusing to refund their money unless we can prove the vehicle was fueled. This is an unfair business practice. No reasonable person would charge someone for 17 gallons of gas when their own records show only about a gallon could have possibly been used. On top of all of this even if you desire to speak to someone to resolve the issue, you cannot as the automated call options for the local office refuse to connect you to a live person. If you call the home office, you can only speak to an AI generated help robot that also cannot solve any issues. I will not rent from Hertz again. read more

An unabashedly wretched spot. Excels at nothing. I am a President's Circle member (through a credit card) and got a great AAA discount -- $25/day for a long weekend. That's basically where the pros end. Upon arrival, I was told that the virtual card number I had used to book the car wasn't workable, even when I tried to use the actual card and showed proof of the virtual number. The employee kindly cancelled my old reservation and rebooked under the card I had with me, but the process was unnerving (I was first told to call corporate, and was on hold for 10 mins before she came upon this solution). Even though I A) am a President's Circle member, and B) had proof of identity through my ID and the full card number used, Hertz didn't really care. Whatever! The car was a bummer. It was a Buick SUV with 50k+ miles on it, a 30% full tank, and an overwhelming cigarette smell. When I got into it, I genuinely thought it was a mistake, like maybe it was an employee's car. No! This is the rental car. I've never encountered a rental car this old and dirty before. I was befuddled by having it at 30% full; she told me to return it at that level, which seems so counterintuitive. When will they ever fill it up?! The other reviews are right, and uniformly point to inadequate service and similar issues (cigarette smell, low gas). They were overstaffed on a Saturday (5 people) yet could not do much. I will continue going here if I need to because it's cheap and I get good rewards, but I'm totally not happy about it. I've never had such a subpar rental car experience before. Hands down the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I reserved a car to be picked up at 5:00 PM. I hit a bit of traffic, but the Hertz App told me "delays happen, your car will be ready for up to 2 hours after pickup time". I arrived to the garage at 5:19 PM and went straight to the desk. All lights off, but there are 5 people inside. They completely ignore me until I basically knock on the windows and ask to pick up my vehicle. They respond by saying 'we closed at 5'. I explained I needed the car before they re-opened the next day for a work trip, and after a few minutes of back and forth, they told me there was nothing they could do for me, despite being a gold member, they would not be able to give me the car that I had already paid for. They kept rep-iterating that I was 19 minutes late as it was seriously offensive for me to even consider that I would still get the vehicle THAT I PAID FOR, and they told me that they all had long commutes home and that my arguing was preventing them from going home. I became visibly upset and the KINDEST WOMAN from Sixt next door came out to offer me a box of tissues and ask if I needed a car. She re-opened her work station for me and set me up with a new car while all the Hertz employees locked up and left. I was in and out of Sixt in less than 10 minutes. An employee -- a Latina woman, approximately 30 years old with shoulder-length hair -- behaved in a manner that was not only unprofessional but outright hostile. While I left the scenario deeply shaken following her verbal threats and aggressive body language. My sister being present and recording the incident further confirmed, my initial inquiries were not only reasonable but being met with outright hostility. When I attempted to retrieve my items (which had been stored by an employee twenty minutes earlier while I retrieved the rest of my party downstairs), I was met with rudeness and refusal to answer basic questions or return my belongings. I presented my California ID, following my seven hours of travel, as the bags I'd been offered to leave (by a professional long haired gentleman NOT the manager) were labeled with Amtrak provided labels-but the employee acted as though I was an inconvenience from the very beginning. When I asked standard, reasonable questions -- regarding accepted payment methods, total cost after deposit, return times, and whether a digital wallet credit card could be used for the deposit (my physically present card was debit)-- I was treated with disdain, and none-yes none-of my questions were answered. The employee went so far as to slam the service window in my face, a recorded incident-imply I had no credit card (I presented my digital wallet), and later yell at me like a child front of others interrupting my conversation with Farai the manager when I asked to speak privately with the manager on duty. This behavior was unprovoked, unnecessary, and reflects gross misconduct. read more

RENT ELSEWHERE even if it costs you a little bit more. I echo many of the previous reviews-my experiences have been terrible. I have reserved cars for 8:30 AM Sunday morning pickups last week and in April. Both times I was unable to get my cars on-time-I waited 45 minutes in April and 25 minutes last week to get the car. The experience in April was so bad that Hertz ended up giving me a $50 coupon for a future rental (at least they owned up to that bad experience). They are chronically understaffed, with long lines even at 8:30 in the morning. When I was there last week, there were three people in the booth but only one helping customers for most of the time. When I asked the branch manager about this, the person said that they were trying to process and track inventory (which should be done before opening hours and can certainly wait if there's a long line). The agents are extremely unknowledgeable and unempowered to make decisions-when I tried to use the coupon the other week, they said they couldn't process it until after I returned the car. My car last week also came with 3/4 of a gas tank, not even close to full. The Hertz location is also hard to find, with poor signage in Union Station unlike other rental locations. They also rarely have the type of car you pre-select online-I asked for a compact car and I got the options of an SUV or mid-size sedan. This location's hours are also terrible, closing at 6 PM on the weekends. At least you can drop the car off after hours, although even that ends up with a massive car pile-up in front of the booth and it probably takes at least 30 minutes the next morning to move all the cars which may also be contributing to the delays. A dismal place in a dismal garage. Hertz can do better and you can definitely have a better rental experience. read more

I gave the keys to a hertz representative and was told they'd email a receipt. 6 days later, they are still charging for an unreturned rental. over $600 on our card. I've called hertz customer service 6 times. They say the same thing - "they'll call the office". Obviously they haven't or are lying. This place is not great but fine. They did not have the car I reserved, or any gas cars when I arrived. They only had electrics, ugh. Fine, I took the electric. They did not try to pressure me for additional coverage, though I already declined all of them during the reservation. When you leave the garage, you check out with someone in a hertz booth, which is normal. But at Union Station, you have to get a parking voucher from this person to exit the garage. This person did not automatically give this voucher to me, I had to request it. Makes me wonder how I would have gotten out otherwise. When you get to the gate to leave the garage, you put the voucher in the kiosk, but nothing actually happens. You have to press the help button, someone in the Union Station booth buzzes the gate open, and then on your way out, that person comes out to take the voucher. Seems really inefficient and an additional and unnecessary task for the Union Station attendant. The car wasn't completely clean, but it wasn't disgustingly dirty either. I get this is a train station and not an airport, where they have better cleaning equipment. Charging the vehicle is a pain, but that comes with the territory with electric vehicles. The Hertz rep told me I had to download the EVGo app to do this. Fine. My problem is, when I took possession of the vehicle, the Hertz staff said it was charged to 60%, so I can just bring it back at 60%. I guess it's my fault that I did not read receipt before leaving the garage, because the receipt said it was 100% charged. This means, to avoid a surcharge of bringing the car back less than what was listed, I had to bring the car back at 100%, 40% more than I got it, which probably cost an extra $20. Before returning the vehicle, I charged it at the Union Station garage location. The charging booth was so hard to find. There is no signage directly you in the garage, but the second floor location is towards the SIXT return side. Note: if you pay with a credit card directly with the charging booth, as opposed to using the app, the charging station there puts a $100 hold on your credit card, and remains on there for a week. I returned the key to the Hertz booth at 9:43am, but they processed the return at 9:55am, which resulted me in incurring an extra hour charge. Later I was charged $41 for a toll pass. I did not take any toll roads. I requested Hertz to show me what tolls I supposedly went through, they did not respond. I inquired about the rental being clocked out later than when it was returned, they did not respond. In what should have been a rental that cost less than $40 (rental price was $35, and I only drove 55 miles), it ended up being $120 ($35 for the initial rental cost, $12 for a erroneous extra hour, $31 bucks for charging when it should be like $5, and $41 for tolls I did not use). In conclusion, I had a crappy experience and do not recommend using Hertz at this location. Tips for the future: -Reserve your car at least a week in advance. This doesn't guarantee you'll get a car, but most rental companies at Union Station do not take same day reservations. -Have multiple, cancelable rental reservations with other rental companies in case they don't have your vehicle. Make sure once you get a car, cancel the other reservations before any fees are charged. This means you'll probably have to stagger your reservation times. -Take videos of the car when you pick it up and when you return it. -Take a picture of the gas level and mileage during pick up and return. -Inspect your receipt before leaving with the car to ensure the fuel/charge matches so you are not responsible for fueling up the car more than you have to. -When you return the car, get a physical receipt so they have to process the return right away and not later, causing you to pay more for an extended time. -Get there early to familiarize yourself with the garage so you're not confused (where the return drop off is, the key drop off if returning after hours, where the charging station is) or late when returning the car. read more

I read the reviews. I was scared but I got such a good deal with our AAA membership that I rolled the dice. I will say getting there was a tiny bit tricky but we followed the signs and got to the hertz little office shack on the mezzanine level of the parking deck. The inconvenience we had was we parked on the top deck and took the escalators down and followed the signs for Hertz which takes you past the busses towards H street and then to a dedicated elevator that only goes to that level. As far as I could tell that's the only way to get there. The escalators don't stop there. We waited behind one customer and the wait was about 10 minutes. When it was my turn it was pretty quick since I had done everything online. The vehicle we reserved was there, we got the keys and off we went. The staff were totally cool too. We didn't talk much but he was respectful and nice. We rented a mini van since it was 5 of us and that minivan was PIMP!! Leather interior and all the charging ports! We had Apple car play and the navigation screen was amazing. We will 100% rent again. I rented a car from hertz in Forrestville, Md. The office is located inside of an old jiffy Lube warehouse. There is no counter, just a woman sitting in a folding chair behind a fold-out table with a computer sitting on it. The outside and inside of the warehouse is filthy and so was the car. I asked the man who gave me the car why it was so filthy and he said because we only clean the inside, we don't have any way to wash the outside, we don't have any water hoses. When I sat inside, it had an awful, pungent disinfectant smell. It was so strong that I had to roll down the window. I now realize that they were trying to mask the marijuana order that set in 30 minutes after I left. I only accepted the car because my car is being repaired and I had to get to work. Customer service has been absolutely no help. You can't speak to anyone about the issue. They tell you to fill out a form online, but when you do, it says that they will get back with you in 3-5 days. I cannot drive this car for that long. DO NOT rent from Hertz. They know that there franchises are not reliable and have no quality control. They give you the run around so you will not have a remedy. I guess I will call my credit card company and hope that their customer service is better than Hertz. read more

I get that most of the time car trouble is unpredictable... but these rental car places do not deal with the problems properly and it's super inconvenient. Anyway, this is unlike the other hertz rental places that I've been to. Usually you have your pick of several cars, here one is given to you, take it or leave it. I was told I was getting an upgraded "luxury" vehicle, girlfriend; it's a Toyota Avalon that is not luxury. I am dying to know what I would have been stuck with if I hadn't been "upgraded". Just tell me you do not have the car I reserved and paid for and let's move on. Anyway, my tire light came on with this car after driving it only once and only for about 45 mins total. and instead of roadside assistance coming to me, I had to drive around like an idiot in the city to get it solved on my own. I know this is also a problem with hertz in general. I'm just aggravated by the whole situation and the guy supposedly checked and filled my tires but the next day the light was on once again. Super inconvenient when you are traveling for work and need to get things done. They are never able to switch out your car either. If you are renting a car in union station, good luck! My advice? The DC - Union Station Hertz Rental location is the WORST!! DO NOT RENT FROM THEM!! They don't clean the cars before renting them out and the vehicle I received smelled like weed. The steering wheel felt sticky so I wonder what the previous renter did while using the car. Unfortunately, I had a flat tire while renting this vehicle and there was no spare tire provided in the trunk of the car. I did not purchase HERTZ roadside assistance; therefore, I became responsible for paying for the replacement tire for their rental car. NOTE: If you are offered a voucher from HERTZ for any repairs, don't accept it! Basically, they offer you a voucher, so you don't have to pay for the repair at the time of pick from the repair shop. However, when you return the car to HERTZ you will be charged for 1) the price of the tire replacement, 2) labor costs to install the tire, AND 3) a $50 "administrative fee" to use their system. The details of the voucher administrative fee were not explained before I accepted it. It would have been better to just go directly to the tire repair shop and pay for the tire expenses at the time of pickup. This was my first and LAST time renting a car from HERTZ. I would advise anyone to NOT rent from them. read more

This location appears to have moved to the second floor of the parking structure so is now 99 H Street, NE, Washington DC. From our experience today, it is hard to tell whether only one of the staff here is a liar or there were more than one lying staff. We reserved a car for 11 a.m. Around pick-up time, a staff told us that "our car" needed cleaning and would not be available for pick up until about an hour later. We specifically asked twice and she confirmed that the Hertz location would hold that car under our reservation when we pick up in an hour. When we returned an hour later, she and a second staff next to her told us to wait another 10 minutes. We said "great" and asked them to process the transaction, to which the second staff refused, claiming she did not have the registration number because she did not know which car was for us. After 10 minutes, we went to the booth and said "Hi, it's been 10 minutes -" Before we could ask where the car was, the second staff snapped and lectured us that the wait time was not guaranteed. Although at first she attempted to correct us by saying that the first staff meant "more or less an hour" when we brought it up after having waited for an hour and a half, later in the conversation she evidently decided to deny having any knowledge whatsoever about what the first staff told us at the original pick-up time (11 a.m.). She also said to us that the first staff was new, was wrong, and had made a lot of mistakes which she had to correct every time. [Ouch. I'd hate to be that coworker...] Trying to understand whether two or three hours would be what she meant by "more or less an hour" and "more or less 10 minutes," we mentioned that we were going to be late for our destination. The second staff blamed us for not reserving the car the night before, which made no sense because we made the reservation five days ago. When we pointed that out, she then blamed us for not paying an extra day's rental to pick up the car the day before and claimed all she was trying to do was help us. [I suppose the joke is on me that I don't know a reasonable person's expectation is that you might wait 12 hours on site for a car you already reserved?] Later in the conversation (at around 1:10 p.m.) we learned for the first time from her that "it takes 30 minutes to clean the car." This was surprising so we asked why we had to wait for 2 hours for the car that the first staff told us about at 11 a.m. She said there was no car for us at 11 a.m. until a specific car was dropped off less than 30 minutes ago. From then on, she began to repeatedly reference that specific car to be "for our reservation" and that she knew exactly when that car started being cleaned. This made us wonder why she refused to process our transaction at 12:45 p.m. if she knew of this specific car at the time. Finally, after having been interrupted by her over 20 times during the conversation despite us saying several "can I ask a question" or "can I finish my sentence," I regrettably raised my voice when asking for the third time: "Can I finish my sentence?" The second staff immediately slammed the window close and canceled our reservation on her end because "we raised our voice," as if she was waiting for this all along. During this 25-minute encounter, we still did not see any car that was supposed to be ready "in 10 minutes" near the booth. A few minutes after we left, we called the Hertz customer service line but was told that customer service is not available on weekends. The customer service line directed us to call the location manager, who stated as a general matter that Saturday is very busy for their location and sometimes the location runs out of cars. But after we mentioned that we waited for hours and only got our reservation canceled by the Hertz staff, she was not interested at all in discussing about the over two hours of delay or whether any cars have become available. She then pointed us back to the Hertz customer service line. [Ha, the never-ending circle...] On a side note, when we arrived for our pick-up time (11 am), there were only 3 customers in the vicinity and no line. When we returned an hour later as instructed, there was literally no customer nearby for that entire 25 minutes . So when the second staff mentioned a couple of times the mysterious "other customers before you," we didn't know what to think. We don't think they ever had any car available for us today. We just wish they could have been honest with us at 11 a.m. so we could have walked to other rental companies booth nearby for a new reservation [or I'm curious whether that is what they are trying to prevent all along?]. Had a similar (which is to say terrible) experience as others here. Hertz called me an hour before my reservation was supposed to begin and told me that there were no cars available. They immediately canceled my reservation and I was left scrambling to find another means of transportation. When I called the phone number for the location (10-15 times), no one answered. The general Hertz customer service line was also unhelpful; they told me that because my reservation had already been canceled, there was nothing they could do. Please avoid this location. What they say is true. I rented a Tesla 3 from this location and when I got there they said they didn't have it.

Zero stars if I could. Save your time, money and breath on this place and just go somewhere else. Made a reservation for a car here a month in advance, I showed up 45 minutes after my pick-up time and was told since I was late my car isn't ready and is still being cleaned ( what sense does that make?). I reserved a mid size car, only to be greeted 15 minutes later with a compact car. When I brought it to their attention, I was pretty much mocked and said take it or leave it. Save your time and don't do business here. Side note: the car was still dirty when they gave it to me. Also it was like a 3 year old car.. I thought car rentals are supposed to be new? read more

They let you book and then don't have your car. Third time this has happened that you show up and they'll tell you no cars available and you need to go elsewhere read more
