The service here is terrible. In the last two months, I've rented two cars from this Hertz location. Never again!! The first time I had to wait for a long time because there was only one person working the desk, but I got a decent car. The second time, there was a huge delay because they had promised too many rentals. I waited for an hour to get my car (still that one unfriendly lady at the counter); there was a super long line; and there were probably 5-6 other groups waiting for their cars. When I finally got the car, it smelled like smoke and a faint hint of marijuana. By then, I was late to my appointment and desperate so I took it. Overall, a terrible experience. Do not rent from this Hertz (or from Hertz at all). Note: somehow none of the other rental car agencies had large groups of people waiting around and desperate for a car. Rented a mid-size SUV on app, prompt said "upgrade for only a $1.75 per day", I hit upgrade and submitted reservation. Upon arriving at the airport, I was pointed to a presidential circle, went down the aisle and there was nothing but small tiny cars and the only SUV was a Kia Sportage. So I walked back up to the counter and mention the size of the Kia Sportage, rep said "that's your upgrade". So I upgrade from medium SUV to large and they give me Sportage. Here is how Kia classifies their own Sportage. "Kia officially classifies the Kia Sportage as a compact SUV". Compact = Large according to Hertz, SMH. read more

We had a rental reservation for a Friday night at DCA. Our plane did not land until 11 PM. The latest that I could create the reservation for was 10 PM I called a representative and they confirmed that that airport location would stay open up to two hours past 10 o'clock based on flight times and that I would not have a problem getting my car. I prepaid and submitted all the information needed so that I could skip the counter and go directly to my vehicle when I arrived at the airport. I was not sure where the big sign was that was supposed to have my name and stall number, so I went up to the counter and asked. She informed me that they were all out of vehicles. I told her I had already prepaid and had a reservation and she just looked at me and said we are all out of vehicles. The lady sitting behind the counter did not apologize or have any empathy at all for my situation she truly could have cared less about the information she was giving me. We were flying in for my daughter's soccer tournament. She had a game the next morning and this is now 11:30pm. All the other rental car agencies at the airport were sold out. I had to Uber to my hotel which was 45 minutes away. The lady told me to come back tomorrow and that they would have cars. The next morning, my plan was to Uber back to the airport in between my daughter soccer games . However, I called the Hertz customer service line 1st to find out if there was a closer location to where I was to pick up a car (there wasn't) so then I wanted to confirm that once I got there that they would in fact have a car waiting for me. The lady told me no the location did not have any cars today either. I told her that all the other rental agencies were also sold out and asked her what I was supposed to do. She had no answer. She had to "check" with her manager to see if she could cancel my reservation??? When she came back on the line she told me that it had been canceled and asked if she could help me rebook a car. Ummm how are you going to help me rebook a car when you don't have any vehicles?? I was in a different state with my daughter at a soccer tournament, thankfully, I was able to rely on other parents to help get us around until I got a rental car through TURO. The rental cars are a short shuttle ride from baggage claim. Under 10 minutes. Then cross the street and the car companies are in the building. This visit, finally, Hertz had our name on the electronic board. We have the presidential club (LOL) so you pick whatever vehicle you want in the section. We did not pick the Mustang but went with a small SUV (DC's horrible parking situation and confusing roads, remember?). The drive out of the garage was very easy. DO NOT USE HERTZ!!! I'm extremely disappointed with Hertz. I've been a Hertz customer for more than 20 years. I spent time earning points through their rewards program, only to find out that they take them away every few months if you don't rent a car. They always tell you, when you call customer service, that the points expires if you do not rent for a year. This is not the case though. In the last 3 to 4 years, they took my earned points away from me even after 2 months; another time after 3 months. That feels incredibly unfair and honestly pointless--what's the use of a rewards program if your rewards just disappear? Not everyone rents cars every few months. Some of us travel occasionally, and it shouldn't mean we lose the points we already earned. It feels like a sneaky way to wipe out customer rewards instead of honoring them. Because of this policy, all the time and loyalty I put into using Hertz feels wasted. A rewards program should reward customers, not punish them for not renting often enough. Very frustrating experience, and it definitely makes me think twice about using Hertz again, most likely never again. read more

I rented from here while on a trip back to NOVA. The week before I rented from Enterprise and that was a horrible experience. I was nervous to rent a car after my experience with Enterprise but I am glad I decided to give Hertz a chance. I did the pre-check in and a car was available right away when I came. The DCA shuttle from baggage claim to rental car pickup was crowded. We were able to avoid the aggravating counters and proceeded directly to the pickup area. Our names were clearly displayed on the screen and we chose the last car available. The car could have been in better shape but we were overall relieved. Rental car return early in the dark morning has not improved over the many years. The signage is poor, instructions are still vague and navigating the obstacle course to the Hertz lower level is hair raising. My wife believes in flirting with luck. NEVER rent from Hertz...false imprisonment...see below. I accidentally turned into their garage hoping to get back to the National/Enterprise desk, and I got stuck in their garage. Stuck, meaning they blocked the exits with cars and refused to move them despite staff being on site. Apparently, they will not help at all before 7am even if MULTIPLE customers accidentally turn into their lot...this is a common occurrence as a result of the airport's confusing signage! As I was in a hurry, I politely asked two customer service agents (a man and a woman) to help me AND ANOTHER CUSTOMER in the same situation out. The lady and man, despite my kind pleads, decided to respond only "We open at 7." No matter what I said, they responded "we open at 7" and nothing else. After being stuck in the garage for an HOUR, this response was lacking in any human decency. Hertz clearly does not care (read the constitution...we have rights against false imprisonment!). Finally at 7, one of the service ladies finally let me and the other customer out. I will never rent from Hertz, and I encourage you to do the same. They lack empathy and decency. read more

When out at pick your gold car, no sedans. To our luck we choose a 2020 Ford Edge with only 300 miles. IRONICALLY After an hour drive to our destination, checking email was a Hertz email. It was received during the rental desk wait. It stated Welcome and all we needed to do was go to Gold Area and choose a vehicle and drive away. Thats without the actual car rental. The lady at the counter was so upset and made it seem like I was inconveniencing her at her job. I reserved the car 2 weeks ahead to the trip and the car wasn't even there. If you're looking for a car rental company to use go with Sixt. Alot better experience and I went to the counter and got a rental car the same day within 5 minutes of speaking to the counter personal. Sixt charged me about $500 with all fees and deposit. I left my jacket and house keys in a rental car on 9/28. Despite multiple efforts, the staff at the DCA Hertz location have repeatedly avoided and ignored me. I submitted a ticket to their lost ticket system and went to the location on 9/29. After waiting an hour, the staff couldn't find the car. I was told it may have gone to the distribution center. The guys at the distro center walked the lot with me and it was not there. They said it was logged in at DCA and hadn't moved. I went back to DCA the next day. After speaking with the manager he was unable to find the car too. He gave me the number of someone from lost and found who told me to call her the next day. I called twice and left one message and had no response. The next day I called twice again, and got no response. She texted me saying she would updated me by the evening and didn't. I texted her three times before getting a response. I recieved a text back after sending a picture of the receipt. She said the car had been rented out and now said she a hold on it as she had the receipt. I have showed the receipt to every one at the location every time I've been in. I was told a hold was already on the car. She also said she had sent me an email. The only email that I received said that the item had not been found. Nothing about a hold, that the car had been rented out. She didn't even ask me if I had the receipt she apparently needed to place the hold she said she'd placed. Being able to find one of your cars wouldn't be beyond Hertz's staff. I just need someone to help me and not ignore me. This jacket was expensive and it's personally important to me, not to mention my house keys which I obviously need back. They really don't care about their customers. After traveling 10 hours with my 12 year old son and having a reservation at 9pm with hertz they told me when I arrived that they had zero cars available. When I asked the agent what to do? They said come back tomorrow. I had to spend 100$ round trip on uber plus the following morning all they had available was upgraded vehicles!!! Let me start this review off by saying that I only rent cars from Hertz and I am a Presidents Circle rewards member. I have rented from hertz and all of the major airports in the United States, including JFK, MIA, HOU, SEA-TAC, SFO, Dulles, Chicago and ATL. Never have I experienced the sheer lack of care that I experienced here. I had accidentally made my rental from Dallas instead of Washington national. When we discovered that, the Hertz agent was very much unsympathetic. This was the first time is it ever happened to me and as an answer to my asking questions to her, she just sat there and stared at me and played on her phone. I don't like to be the one to have to complain because I would much rather just have a smooth Rental experience but something like this just can't go on. read more

The customer service is just shy of having a pulse as they begrudgingly assist you and tell you they don't have cars and don't care. Delays happen, but staff communication was exceptionally poor. Asked for an update on my place in line so I could plan a bathroom break and the person working at the gold member kiosk didn't want to give it to me. First off, I came here after roadside sent me because the car I was in was overheating. It was 99 degrees in DC and the A/C was forced to shut off so that the car didn't overheat. When I tell you my whole body was sweaty... whew! It was nasty. Anyway, got to DCA to the Hertz. The woman I dealt with in the garage at the podium said she couldn't help me -- only an HLE could; whatever that meant. Apparently their softwares are different and the lady basically told me I was SOL, and she then referred me to the Union Station location. Yes, you understood that correctly -- she wanted me to DRIVE the OVERHEATING LITTER BOX back into the city. Again, it was 99 degrees. I'm a woman. I was sweaty, and not happy. I left and quickly returned to the Hertz garage as all of the Hertz in the area (including Union) were closed. The lady was severely inconvenienced as she had to fill out paperwork manually -- like with a paper and pen. Crazy, right?! Yep -- they can still do that apparently. Miraculous! Tawyelle, I believe her name was, made 2 phone calls explaining the situation. One of the calls I heard her tell the guy, Paul, that they didn't have inventory for me to get a vehicle. (Mind you, I live 50 miles from DCA and she knew that.) The litter box Chevy Trax she ended up giving me smells like BO SO BAD. There's an ice cream stain in the backseat that hasn't been touched -- better yet -- even attempted to be cleaned. It's truly an embarrassment to drive. Also, the car is blue, but the tag says it's black, which I thought was odd. Seriously, I feel like I have to shower after I drive that ugly thing. Also, off topic but worth noting: their employees shuffle cars around there, driving like they're getting off the clock -- speeding and just overall totally wreckless. To top it off, I left my garage opener in the other litter box (Buick Encore) that was about to blow up AND they aren't answering my phone calls. Way to go, Hertz. I can't think of a reasonable price to pay to be in this situation. It's ridiculous and their customer service is piss poor. They don't care that their vehicles just about put me in danger especially if they have to fill out paperwork manually. What a task that was. Sheesh. read more

This is a busy airport Hertz location, and I didn't arrive on a good day. There were a lot of cancellations, not a lot of cars available, and a lot of stressed people. The staff was helpful and processing people as fast as they could. But one person in particular, Alex Z, was hustling hard and getting people processed super fast in a superhuman way. A very brief rental - one day, 50 miles - and I bought it on Priceline because everyone at DCA wanted over $100. Priceline? $30 including taxes. Hertz has a very useful kiosk that makes a video conference call with an associate that might well be anywhere. My guy did a fab job and was most certainly a US based worker as he was especially polite and completely understandable. From the time I started at the kiosk until I departed with my contract, they hadn't even taken one more person from the line for a "human." USE THE KIOSK! The car was perfectly fine - they had the class I reserved and I was able to get it out and back with only the issue that the parking lot spaces could use some better markings. Otherwise, no problem. The car pickup process went very smoothly. Since I am gold it was easy to simply walk over and choose any car I wanted in my section. I was hoping for a vehicle with XM radio, but after searching 3 cars, I gave up. The car had some safety mode that I could not unset so if I punched the screen to change a radio station, I had to come to a complete stop. (Toyota Yaris) The return was kind of odd. I always say "Full Tank" and give the mileage, and the attendant writes it down, and we are done (trying to help a brotha out, ya know). Apparently this location gets a lot of cheats because the guy told me he had to check. That's never happened before to me. Whatever. I asked him where do I catch the shuttle, and he sent me off in space somewhere. I ended up walking 30 minutes to catch my flight. read more
