Walked down from campus Friday morning to pick up breakfast for my lab group. Beautiful assortment of breads and pastries; I selected a plain croissant, chocolate croissant, large monkey bread, and stecca bread. (Total came to $16.10). Everything was freshly baked and smelled amazing. I was especially excited to try the plain croissant, and it was very good. The monkey bread was a huge hit, hard and crispy outside, soft inside, surprisingly light and not too sweet. Stecca had great flavor but was overbaked. Overall very happy with the goods, would love to try some of their loafs of breads if I find the occasion to. read more

I've had the pleasure of eating Hewn's bread long before I ever walked into the shop. I love the crusty, hearty texture, tooth and taste in every bite. However, on my first experience in the shop I was surprised and disappointed by their customer service. It was an early Sunday morning and not too busy but the gentleman who finally asked me after I waited, oogling at all of their offerings if I need help totally dismissed or ignored it when I told him it was my first visit there and was not very kindly when I inquired about several products. It was a less than enjoyable welcoming interaction. I made a decision paid the bill and went on my way enjoying the savory flatbread. Now I don't mind spending more for something special and I know what they make is special but with customer service like that I'm less apt to return again and again. I don't know if that person was an owner or an employee but honestly I hesitate to go back there. I don't want that same experience. Well organized and clean pick-up-&-go bakery. Al fresco seating available but not so much inside save for a bench or two. Service is quick, friendly, and informative. Their offerings of bread were aplenty as the variety of baked goods. Prices matched Evanston standards- maybe even surpassed the normally higher than average price points. (i.e.- $10/loaf of bread, $4/slice of pound cake, etc...). Such are artisan quality goods tho... Get coffee elsewhere if you can manage an extra stop. read more

I love the fact that instead of getting a sweet once, I can get a mini loaf for the same price and it's the bread that this place is known for. Maybe if I can find a local store that uses their bread to go with a coffee offering and get some tasty toast n jam I would be set! Maybe Kafein! I mean I suggested the idea of making toast when I stopped in for coffee and he liked the idea. Instead I got the mini loaf and had the fella at the counter cut off a thick hunk and enjoy it on the bench. I really didn't want anything sweet any way, as I got really good brownies at home. They have awesome customer service and while I understand if they had toast n all, their sweets might not move out the door. Please bring the bread to a farmers market over in Chicago and toast it up! I'd pay $3 for a thick piece with jam. read more

The best pastry shop in Chicago, hands down. The croissants are flaky and delicious. But the chagel thing on the menu is by far the best item here. It's challah and a bagel mixed. Out of this world. I ate it as is, not even warmed up it was that good. It's pricey - so not for the daily breakfast, but as treat this place is 10/10. read more

After obsessing over the Hewn Instagram for a few months, I finally made it to the brick and mortar today. I arrived around 3 and there was still plenty to choose from, and the workers were sweet and helpful. The scone texture was perfectly moist and still crunchy on the edges. I think a lot of places don't realize how good a scone can be if you do it properly, but Hewn definitely does, and I appreciate that! I will honestly say I've never had babka before, but I'm glad their Chocolate Babka was my first. Really soft, impressive swirl, and great flavor. Hopefully I make it to that side of town again soon to pickup more! read more

Delicious albeit pricey bread. Have held off writing this but here goes. The expectation of a tip when I buy one loaf of unsliced bread is unreal. The counter marshmallows literally turn on their heels and walk away when they see I haven't left a tip. They're done-no thank you, no goodbye.You didn't make me a sandwich. You didn't make me a coffee. You walked less than 15 feet to put a loaf of bread into a bag for me. Sorry, you don't get an automatic tip for that. What are we teaching kids? Love this place. Referring to Hewn as a bakery is really an understatement...when you walk in it's more of an "experience". Pastries are phenomenal, scones are beyond good, specialty sandwiches are fantastic, and hands down they have some of the best breads around. Even the coffee selection is great. We stopped in about an hour before they closed. Got a loaf of the country bread, which was very good and has been a treat to have in the freezer over the last week. My sandwich--the Italian--was also quite good. The only disappointment was the Koign Amann, but perhaps these are best eaten soon out of the oven and not an hour before the bakery closes. read more

I am so disappointed by my second trip to this place. I was so excited to come back and try some different items after my first time here but the quality of their baked goods was much lower. I got their ham and cheese croissant, fruit croissant, blueberry scone, and cheddar and chive scone. If you take a look at my picture of the ham and cheese croissant, there was absolutely no ham or cheese in it!! It was just a croissant with a huge empty pocket in the middle. The bread itself was also not as flaky or buttery as the first time. The fruit croissant also barely had any filling! As you can see in the picture there is only a microscopic amount of apple filling. The blueberry scone and cheddar and chive scone were also exceptionally dry. I even tried to heat them up but they were still incredibly dry and quite flavorless. I barely tasted any blueberry or cheddar or chive. Overall, I am so sad about this experience as I thought I had found my favorite bakery. The search continues! read more

I have stopped in a few times to pick up some pastries. I have yet to order a sandwich, but cannot wait as they look DELICIOUS! Hewn doesn't do the overly sweetened and frosted baked good. Hewn offers a quality, artisan pastry with all of the sour, tangy, tart flavors of fresh fruit and berries. They really stand out with their bread. Even with the nutella brioche, my favorite part is the brioche bread with the thick sugar granules! Even their plain wheat sandwich bread is uniquely flavorful and savory. I had my first piece of "polenta cake" at Hewn. I didn't know what to expect from a "polenta cake," as it kind of sounds like an oxymoron, but it was like a piece of delicious dessert bread with fruit baked into the top crust. I have been planning to attempt my own version at home. I was especially blown away by the savory scone - cheddar and chive. WOW! I can't wait to go back and get more. read more

I really, really like Hewn! The interior is lovely: gorgeous, rustic wood everywhere. The store is a bit small, but it's very empty. There's one shelf on the wall where you might be able to set your espresso and pastry, but no tables. They could easily fit a couple of small bistro tables inside, and I wish they would! There's a bench in front of the store, but otherwise, this stretch of Dempster St. is sadly benchless. I tried the chocolate croissant and the morning bun, and both were fantastic. Both were restrained: the chocolate croissant was not overflowing with chocolate, so you could really appreciate the buttery flakiness of the pastry itself. The morning bun was thoroughly cooked (not doughy at all), and the cinnamon sugar was lovely and caramelized on the bottom. I will definitely be back to try other pastries and to pick up one of their delicious looking loaves of bread! read more

Hewn is amazing! Hewn is a small, highly underrated bakery that also does coffee and sandwiches, etc. It's a super tiny location. There's a bench to sit down at and enjoy if you're going to eat inside, and that's about it. If you're going for a quick pastry + coffee pick me up in the morning, this is a great place to go. I have popped-in to Hewn a couple times in the last month and I must say it is great! Their employees are very helpful and kind and also patient when you are trying to make up your mind while perusing the baked good selection. They have a variety of fresh made breads as well as baked goods which are all terrific. I really respect that they don't make their sweets overly sugary, they let their baked goods speak for themselves. Overall my favorite thing is their lemon ginger scone. Not too sweet and packed with crystallized ginger. Definitely a nice pick me up on a Sunday morning. The cinnamon brioche was also quite good as were the almond and regular croissants. We also picked up a loaf of brioche for French toast. Can't wait to see how it turns out tomorrow morning. Lastly, their iced Americano and reg mocha are delicious! As an Evanston resident, I'd been waiting for Hewn's opening, and fortunately, I wasn't disappointed. I've only had the cheddar bread so far, but OH MY GOSH it's so delicious.We got the last loaf of the day last Saturday, and I thought people coming in just after us were going to start making offers. About the bread: absolutely perfect crust -- crunchy but not impermeable. The bread's texture is out of this world, and the flavors completely blended. It was delicious on its own, but my friend and I enjoyed the better part of the fresh loaf with a spinach artichoke dip, and couldn't stop eating. Oh -- while we were in Hewn, we were offered a sample of an extraordinary brie. so it appears that you may have great accompaniments to your baked goods if you get there at the right time. Best to arrive early, especially if you want to try the lauded croissants and pastries. I am still hankering for their chocolate croissants, because I've been hearing great things about them. I wasn't familiar with Hewn until this summer. I parked right in front of it when I was meeting a friend for coffee and macarons from Little Beth's across the street. When we were leaving my friend asked where I was parked and I told her in front of the business with the line of people in front of it. She replied that she was going to get in line to get some bread. She then told me that Hewn is not only popular locally, but across the country. Her brother, who was visiting from NH, told her he had to visit because they win bread baking competitions all over. Who knew? First of all, I LOVE the stop light system at the door - if the light is green you may enter, if it's red you have to wait until someone exits and the light changes. I also love the tall plexiglass shields. Everything looks delicious when you walk in. I've tried several of the breads, and they are all perfect - nice crunchy crust with a soft inside. I've had tried country blonde, cheddar, garlic parm, potato rosemary, picholine olive and my favorite - the NYE special - gruyere whole wheat. My favorite treat of all is the kougin amann...it's a buttery, decadent pastry that is worth all the guilt. read more

One of my absolute favorite places in Evanston. Yes, you can get bread or pastries cheaper, but they won't be made of the same quality ingredients by a caring local business that takes very good Covid precautions and provides health insurance for their staff! And they won't taste as good. I love the country loaves, the Kouign-amann, veggie breakfast sandwich, lemon ginger scone, and basically everything! Definitely be sure to order ahead online if you want something in particular because they sell out (helpful for narrowing down your choices, though...). Their stoplight system for controlling occupancy is the best I've seen - no peering through windows to see if you're allowed in - and if you order online you can pick up at a separate door so you don't even have to go inside. They have special items for every holiday, and our perennial favs are the herbed dinner rolls, take-and-bake baguettes, whoopie pies, and brie en croute. read more

Hewn makes the most incredible artisan breads. I have been frequenting this store since it first opened in Evanston. I love all of their breads and over the years have had each and every one. Some I slice for sandwiches and others I keep whole and cut in wedges, freeze and heat up a hunk with dinner. If you heat it up properly, it is every bit as good as the day you bight it. I have also bought their sweets...my only complaint is that I can never decide which ones to purchase as they all look so appealing. LOVE their sandwiches.. Over the years I have told so many people about the bakery and they have never disappointed. I can now order their breads through Sunset Foods so I do not have to drive quite as far!!! read more

Am I the only person that thinks this bakery is over priced and does not live up to the hype. 2 bagels & 3 scones almost $18. The scones are so dry you need something to wash them down with and the bagels are so so but way over-priced . I have had their bread at several local restaurants and it has been delicious . I've now bought the pizza dough twice, and it's a disaster. I thought it was me. The second time I got it was for someone else to have a go at it and the same thing happened. The instructions on the piece of paper they give you say nothing about the dough having to be room temperature before you roll it out. My daughter looked up sourdough pizza dough and found out what we were doing wrong. They also say to use the "enclosed parchment paper" to roll it out on and both times it was missing. There's also a typo in the instructions: "service" for "surface." I also have bought the babka, so dry! I haven't tried the bread yet, got one today. Hopefully that will be better since that's how this bakery started. read more

I don't visit often but when I do I expect to receive the same product I bought last time. I ordered the upside down polenta cake and it was smaller than I last recalled it appearing. Customer service I would say is hit or miss depending on who you get to ring you up. I was having trouble with their processing system and didn't get to finish texting the receipt to myself. I wasn't offered a receipt and tried to have one texted to me. The woman said that I would receive one because my credit card is attached to my phone number. That wasn't the case because I would have received a receipt immediately. I have done this at other businesses with a similar system. I would return but the service could be better. read more
