This place is great!! The baked goods/pastries are always fresh. The staff is always friendly. Their croissants are very flaky. The brownie is very moist and has a rich chocolate flavor. 12/19/20 - This was my second time here. This time I was here much earlier in the day then the last time. I think it was around 11 am. There was a line outside about 10 people long. The line moved pretty quickly. Once inside I immediately noticed the changes from last time. Like so many businesses in this Covid era a continuous plexiglass barrier was up separating the public area from the staff. There were small cutouts at counter height to pass the pastries through. They no longer accept cash. In place card readers were installed for either credit or debit cards. I GUESS THE CASH IS KING ERA IS GONE. I ordered a chocolate croissant. The croissant itself was very good w/a flaky buttery crust. The problem when I cut is open? It's like where's the chocolate? For $4 you would expect to find a little more chocolate inside. Visited here during a trip to Evanston IL. Came on a Sunday AM, and there was a line out the door, which seems to be the norm! I went with the morning bun, which was crunchy and sweet on the outside and pillowy, lightly citrusy, and soft on the inside. Unreal! We accidentally fell upon this place this morning and upon entering my jaw dropped and mouth started watering instantly. We ordered a big bag full of both savory and sweet pastries and we ate everything while making lots of mmmmmm sounds throughout. The coffee is great too. I live in Los Angeles, and I visit Chicago various times a year. Over the last 12 years, I have made a point to visit Hewn Bakery with family and friends during my visits. Despite the expensive price of their goods, I used to recommend the bakery to all my friends and family. On my last visit on June 25th, 2025, I visited the bakery with a few friends at around 2 pm. Unfortunately, the service was terrible. While selecting my baked goods, a female employee with short hair and red lipstick who works at the bakery, served my coffee and without letting me know placed it on the counter next to a customer who was coughing, breathing, and talking over my coffee. I waited some time, when I asked the woman employee where my coffee was, with an unpleasant disposition she responded "I called you and you did not respond, there is your coffee" pointing at the cup of coffee next to the customer who had been coughing, breathing, and talking over my coffee for already sometime. Although I spent a considerable amount of money and tipped well, this female employee did not apologize and instead became defensive and demonstrated defiant behavior. I demanded a fresh cup of coffee and with an unpleasant disposition, my cup of coffee was replaced. I feel sad to say that despite the high prices of their goods, I have been a loyal customer for over 12 years. I will never go back to Hewn Bakery, nor my family members, nor my friends. No customer should be treated so disrespectfully. Also, I just realized that in the last 12 years, I have never seen any employee of any other race but Caucasian working at Hewn Bakery. I have been coming here since they opened and finally decided to write a review during this rough covid time. I am very thankful that in the midst of this pandemic and their move they have continued to provide incredible baked goods and allow us customers to order online as well as pick up in a very safe manner. I have been coming to this bakery since they opened up their original location on main street and I've seen it grow over the years. Heard about this bakery the other night in a Chicago Channel 7 NBC News tease by The Food Guy ... that was enough to make us want to try it. With a bright sunny day on Friday, we were up for a ride out to Evanston to try this bakery on for size - glad we did it. As you enter Hewn Bakery, which is located on the outskirts of Evanston's downtown, you are greeted with a wide assortment of pastries along the counter - mostly bread-based (no doughnuts or kolachky) ... such as a croissant or a Morning Bun. We tried a few and they were routinely very good. Now these croissants are not the usual air puffs you'd find at a Panera, but were much more substantial while still remaining flaky all the way through. They were delish. We bought croissants and a morning bun and ate them in the car. The plain croissant was as noted above. The almond croissant was also very good, but here they take a regular lush plain croissant and split it, and simply spread some almond paste inside ... it is not cooked into it - still delish, The morning bun was also very good, although a quick rewarming in a microwave would have made it even better. We also took home a loaf of sourdough bread - and they had two types, strong sourdough and mild sourdough. We chose mild, and it was very good. All in all this was a great bakery stop - and we will be back. read more

The bread here is delicious, especially the country loaf ($6.50). They also have a wide variety of smaller baked goods and morning pastries; the few of these that I tried were pretty good though not as excellent as the country bread. I tried: -Country ($6.50 for a 700g loaf) - really flavorful and moist sourdough with a decently crackly crust. It's really tasty and I ate this in one day. They also make a blonde version. -Morning bun ($3.65) - this is a laminated pastry with cinnamon sugar. It's very buttery and not too sweet, with a flaky crust and doughy interior. It's tasty, and it's more on the bread-like (rather than croissant-like) side. I liked it but based on this I wouldn't try their croissants in the future. -Savory brioche ($3.95) - really yummy cheese and sun dried tomato brioche. The brioche itself is fluffy and slightly sweet. -Tomato stecca ($4.30) - very hard and chewy savory bread stick. It's quite oily but really tasty. read more

I frequent this bakery and have always enjoyed their bread and pastries. I just went in to purchase some pre- made sandwiches and had a very odd, snarky interaction with one of their employees. It was so weird and the worst customer service I've had in a long time that I asked to speak with the manager to discuss the sarcastic comments made by the employee. Have I really not reviewed Hewn before? Or maybe I did for their original location and this is for the Cental St location? Anyway... Hewn is what I'd called unrefined baked good perfection. This isn't the place for prissy French pastries and designer cupcakes, this is the place for gooey chewy monkey bread, hefty Nutella rolls, mountainous savory scones, rugged turkey Brie sandwiches, blueberry muffin bombs (in a good way), etc. There's absolutely something here for everyone, including freshly baked loaves of bread (they'll run it through a slider for you), baked goods, sandwiches, and better-than-most coffee. Expect a line out the front door on weekend mornings, and make room in your car for the giant box of goodies you couldn't help buy. read more

Really dislike the one hand sandwich I once got there, mostly fat with an addition of butter. Good coffee and good coffee options. I wish I could eat all the pastries but limit myself to an occasional ginger molasses cookie, yum. On a recent croissant blind tasting party, Hewn ranked among the top two, but again, the price is higher than most others. I've been here about four times already and I always love what I get. My favorite items are the croissants. I've tried their Ham & Cheese, Savory, Almond, etc. They're all sooooo good. They're light, flaky, and just so delicious. I've recently had their fruit galettes and they're amazing. My recent favorites are the fruit danish (absolutely must get) and the morning bun. My favorite bread to get is the Garlic Parmesan loaf. It's so flavorful! When I have leftovers, I freeze it. When I reheat it, they're stiill just as good. I hear that there's always a line during the day. I typically go straight after my night shift - right when they open at 7am but one day I'll venture out during the day time hours and grab a sandwich. Hewn has become my favorite bakery in the area for many reasons. They have the best sourdough baguette I have ever tried. It's available after 11am only, so I try to time my visits around it and it never disappoints. It's so crusty on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. It's just the perfect bread in my opinion. They have a good selections of both sweet and savory pastries that are just as good and the menu rotates to showcase seasonal ingredients. My favorite season is hands down the ube season. They have ube danish and canele which are both excellent choices. I'm so happy to have Hewn relatively close by but not too close. It would be hard to maintain my lowish carb diet if Hewn was any closer to where I live. read more

This amazing bakery has truly fantastic bread selection. If you're a bread snob, this is a place foe you. If you're not a bread snob, you'll become one quickly. The fermented sourdough yeast comes trough just enough, but then variety of combinations turn your attention to special ingredients. Favorite ones: Rosemery and potatoes, caramelized onions, seeded one, Evanston red, polenta and pumpkinseed seeds. For lunch, great selection of sandwiches including vegan tofu Bahn me. Don't forget to try ham and cheese on super crusty baguette. If you wanna stroll down the neighborhood (this is Evanston's "2nd downtown") get a Steccca which is this super crusty "thing" with olive oil, tomatoes, and basil, and walk down the Central St and window shop varieties of small businesses. I really wanted to love this place! Came in for a chai tea latte and had to send it back. My tea was very flat and I could not taste the chai or depth of flavor. Also the whole milk at the top was not very frothy. It just almost tasted water down like the tea bag was recycled a couple times. Took it back and requested a latte and my coffee was very watered down, milk not frothed. My barista was kind but I wasn't pleased with my drinks. Favorite bakery in Evanston. Their bread and pastries are second to none. They have done a great job staying open and safe during the pandemic. They also sell Sandwiches, chips, apple juice, etc. Really something for everyone. They usually have fresh eggs and cheese as well. Its an easy place to go if you want breakfast or food for a picnic. My only gripe is that i have to drive all the way to Evanston, but honestly its worth the trip. Now please open a spot in the city already. read more

Nate and I just went to Hewn today which did not disappoint! I have heard a lot of good things about them (woman owned & local!) and knew today with the sun shining was the perfect day. The protocol they use for COVID is efficient and doesn't take away from the experience. The only down side is they are not re-warming pastries which is how I prefer scones/muffins. I got the blueberry scone, which is huge and hearty. I felt like it lacked blueberry flavor but it was still good. Nate got the marble cake slice which I tasted and was very rich/moist/flavorful. The sticky pecan roll is amazing, the scones are pretty good, but it's their layered, flaky bakery items that stand out here: the morning bun and the chocolate croissant, to name two. Hubs really loves the almond-topped chocolate croissant, but I'm more of a purist. Sometimes the line can be long, especially on a weekend morning, but they are very fast and organized. But the sticky pecan bun will definitely sell out; I'm telling you now. [One question: I don't get an "everything croissant." They have lots of sandwiches and most of them are really good, but I have yet to try all of them. My favourite has to be the Cuban sandwich. Hewn Bakery is very cute coffee shop located here in Evanston. It is a hidden gem where you will find the best pastries. The highlight here for me was the crescents which were buttery, flakey, and the perfect texture. There are lots of choices to choose from. Everything I've had from Hewn has been absolutely delicious and always consistent. Their staff were knowledgeable and gave recommendations. Been to two different locations: Libertyville and Evanston. Both locations I bought a loaf of bread and both were amazing. There's some sourdough notes in both and I really loved that. At Evanston I had a canele and an almond croissant and both were pretty good. The croissant was nice and flaky and had great flavor and the canele was a little rubbery but I think it was because I got it at the end of the day. The flavor itself was spot on and the center was still like that creamy pudding-like consistency. read more
