The description is correct that this is a very charming cafe with lots of nice seating, if I had the time I would've definitely settled in for an hour or two! The menu is interesting compared to the typical western cafe, with many specialty coffees and a couple specialty teas. I tried the Yemeni Tea and was delighted at the sweet and spiced flavor that was new to me (after it had cooled down enough for me to drink, that is). I would definitely recommend leaning into these specialty drinks, as my cafe companion tried their Strawberry Matcha and it was disappointingly, artificially sweet with very little matcha flavor. We also tried their Beef Sambosas, which were tasty although not heated through evenly. As well as their small square pistachio baklavas, which were some of my favorite that I've had, not too sweet but flaky and sticky in the best ways (and with lots of nuts)! The pistachio kunafa balls were life changing. SO crispy and sweet (but not too sweet) and nutty pistachioey perfectionnn!! I feel like this is what the viral Dubai kunafa chocolate would taste like, but better. Honestly, one of the best things I've eaten this year. I also got the matcha latte (no mocha) with vanilla foam and it was pretty good! The matcha itself was standard, but the vanilla foam was really tasty. Saw some other cold foams in their menu pictures that looked really good too! Came here for a late night study spot, and there's plenty of tables and couch areas to study. Really great vibes, great food, great bevs, and probably my new go-to cafe. Excited to come back and try more of their desserts! read more

Literally a hidden gem in Berkeley. Passed through here looking for a coffee break and this place exceeded all expectations. The overall vibe was awesome. Staff was very polite and helpful with my questions & gave legit recommendations both for my wife & I. Everything was on point. This place was packed yet didn't seemed crowded. Loved the music and seating. Well maintained bathrooms & tables which is a must for any establishment. Management knows what they're doing and they are doing it well. And you will see this same negative experience across basically every review here, their customer service is NONEXISTENT. I was really excited to try this place and walked here during my work break, but the experience was EXTREMELY disappointing. The barista/cashier with short dark hair didn't even bother to look at me and was incredibly slow--completely indifferent to the growing line of customers waiting to be helped. I felt so shocked and infuriated because shortly after I ordered, I did some work here and saw her do this to literally EVERY customer. after. me. SMH. Like, I hate to sound rude, but why even bother working here and getting paid if you don't even care enough to do your job properly???!! I understand it can be overwhelming if you're the only one taking orders and making drinks, but at the very least, acknowledge people waiting right in front of you. Standing at the counter for over 10 minutes without so much as a "hey, I'll be right with you" is absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable for a popular cafe--especially at a cafe charging crazy prices. No, I shouldn't have to ask at a cafe "Um...can I order yet?" after waiting 10 minutes. I'm not sure if this is normal for this cafe, but she did this to EVERY single customer, no kidding. Never seen that type of "customer service" anywhere, even at McDonalds! It felt like my time (and everyone else's) meant nothing. Like they forget paying customers also are busy and have to run back to work too, I don't have all day to wait for you... it was so ridiculous that even the customer behind me was visibly frustrated and asked if someone else could help. I even also saw many customers giving up and just leaving altogether when they realized they wouldn't be served. I ordered the matcha strawberry, which was decent, but too sweet. I was charged $8.50 despite the menu saying $6. Between the bad service, poor communication, and sketchy pricing, this place is absolutely NOT worth it. My suggestion: Install a KIOSK or hire MORE employees if you guys are going to make customers wait 10 minutes to order every single time and can't keep up with demand because that's the fastest way to lose customers. TRUST ME: JUST SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR DELAH COFFEE IN OAKLAND INSTEAD - it's far, but their service and quality is so much better and what a top ethnic cafe should look like. Heyma Yemeni Coffee has excellent coffee and amazing nibbles. I tried their specialty coffee drink, Socotra'a - medium roast coffee with cardamom, ginger, and cinnamon - I asked for touch of cream and it was perfection! I had it with a mini honeycomb cake and it was perfectly fluffy with the right amount of honey drizzled on top. I have also ordered a cappuccino with a bit of cardamom and it honestly elevated it. I tried their maamoul cookies (tender shortbread cookies filled with dates) - one had finely chopped pistachios sprinkled on top and the other was bare - both were well worth the calories. Finally, I had their savory fatayer, perfectly baked pastry with ground beef in the center, open-faced style - it is also known as an 'empanada arabe'. It was a good balance of pastry, beef, and spices - very tasty. They have a talented baker, I am assuming they are in-house from the great number of delectable looking pastries in their display case. I am also a fan of the clean café interior design - they put a lot of thought into the details from the marble-like table tops to the comfy chairs. There is an inviting sofa with a honey-comb coffee table that would be perfect to hangout & chat with friends or soon to be friends! It is an interesting mix of modern and traditional design - arabesque but with clean lines that play well against each other. The color scheme of black, white, and gold tones is eye-pleasingly striking. The young woman behind the counter is provides friendly service and makes great coffee drinks. This joint is known for its delicious coffee. Yes, everyone comes here for the coffee because its sooo much better than Peets. But I'm here to recommend coming here for the snacks. They have so many delicious little desserts to snack on. I'm not sure if they make them in house or if they outsource the baking, but everything is always fresh and delicious. The most popular drink here seems to be the Heyma Latte. My friend got it with almond milk. The presentation was fantastic and my friend raved about it. I usually get the Strawberry Banana Smoothie. I wanted to give them another try anyway, so I will go back and update my review with my experience. Feb 24, 2024 review: The woman behind the counter was very nice. I want to like Heyma more than I liked it. I wanted to support them but I'm not motivated to go back after my first experience. I got a pour over of one of their specialty coffees. It was rather weak - nothing t to distinguish it from any run-of-the-mill cup of coffee. If it had been flavorful, I wouldn't have minded paying $6.99 for it (really $9 after tax and tip). With the piece of baklava I got, I paid almost $20 for a mediocre cup of coffee and pastry. If it's a place to sit with a friend or your laptop, this might be a place for you. There is a small coffee and pastry place a couple doors east that is quite good. read more
