This was my first time trying the viral Dubai chocolate, and this was the first place I had it. Not totally sure if they make it in-house since it came in a wrapper and was sitting in their counter display, but honestly it was really good. This place took my breath away with how stunning and gorgeous it is! The interior is so lovingly designed and truly feels like you've stepped out of Berkeley. The man at the cashier was very helpful in explaining what was helpful, what didn't have milk, etc. I got the Turkish coffee which HITS. I was wondering why the little pot to pour into my cup wasn't full. It's because it's STRONG. It also tastes very bold and forward, which I liked. My boyfriend ended up getting the Heyma latte, which was creamy and delicious. Their coffees as a whole look spiced and keep the history and tradition alive (as Yemen is the birthplace of coffee! I tried the Aden tea, similar to chai. It was filled with warm spices, and came out piping hot which I appreciated. We sat inside and asked "for here" but were served in to go cups. Really great (I wanna say) Arabic coffee shop located in Berkeley that sources and serves coffee from area where coffee started! In terms of the operation, it's pretty similar to other coffee places. You come in, you order from some friendly people, and you wait for your beverage. There are food items as well. Okay, so that's where the similarities end. This place is super unique, at least to me. The space makes it feel like I've been transported to an area in the world I haven't been, but only seen in movies/ shows. Looks like a great place to meet up and hang with people or another person. The food items looked and smelled wonderful. I ended up ordering a Heyma latte and a savory vegetable pastry. Both delicious, with the latte having a nice spice to it with the cardamom and cinnamon flavors. A perfect warm food/drink combo on a cold evening. I was in the area visiting and this place came up when I was looking up places I could get a pick me up since I was drinking at different beer spots earlier in the day. The setting is cozy and clean, staff are beyond kind and friendly. HEYMA LATTE (iced, oat milk): The house favorite, apparently. While I'm not a cinnamon person, this is delightful. Great place to study with excellent drinks. My go-to is a pot of the Aden tea, which I usually share with a study buddy. I've tried a couple of the refreshers as well, they are good but very sweet and on the pricey side. Plenty of outlets and free wifi, and one of the few cafes that stays open late. The ambiance is a little loud so I would recommend some headphones if you are trying to be productive. read more

If you don't explicitly specify the size of the drink you're ordering, they won't ask, and instead will automatically give you the largest size available, sometimes even a pitcher, and charge you $16+ for it. That's honestly kind of insane, especially if you were just intending to order a small coffee. It really should be on the barista to ask for the size. It's not standard practice anywhere to default to the largest possible option without clarification. Charging such a high price leaves customers stuck with way more of a drink than they wanted, and it comes across as trying to take advantage of people. That's disappointing, because I actually like this place and enjoy coming here. This is a lovely place to sit with a friend, linger with a book, and enjoy great coffee. They really went all out on the ambiance--from the ceiling tiles to the alcove seating. Even the ceramic cups and saucers feel extra special. I have ordered the eponymous Heyma latte each time. I want to try other things on the menu, but I always end up getting this because it is so good with cardamom and cinnamon (at a specialty price though). There are also savory goods and desserts. The coffee and chai was really tasty and beautifully presented. We got the Heyma Latte and the Aden Chai. The latte had gorgeous art and was served nice and hot. Beautiful new coffee shop along university ave. Lots of seating available with nice cushions. The entire shop is beautifully decorated and with plenty of space to work. The screens weren't working when we came in so we had to look up a photo of the menu in order to order. Little annoyance but it was fun. I get it there are some kinks to work out. Also there was only one worker who was working incredibly hard but did result in some delays. Got a heyma latte. Heyma is a really nice aesthetically pleasing coffee shop located in Berkeley. I may not love this specific area of Berkeley, but you can't deny that there is tons of good coffee shops nearby. Finding street parking can be a bit of a pain as well. Once you walk in though it is really well decorated. Although the layout can be a little strange at first because you have to go around behind their coffee bar area to order at the cashier. Customer service is solid overall. I ordered the hot Heyma Latte ($6.99). Your drink is definitely a lot nicer looking if you order for hear rather than to-go where you get the paper cups instead. The latte may not be cheap, but it is good and has a unique flavor. You can really taste the spices from the cardamom and cinnamon. I can see it being overwhelming for some people although I quite enjoyed it. I wish I got to try their pastries also because they looked really good on their shelves. The environment of this store is also very comfortable to sit in and there is tons of seating available as well. This is a newer coffee spot in Berkeley serving Yemeni coffee, the service is polite, quick, and attentive and the decor of the place is very unique with orange and brown tones throughout in a modern and pleasant setting. This spot has one of the best if not the best coffees I've ever had in the bay area, (and I've been to a lot) they do a wonderful job steaming the almond milk I used in my latte and my latte was perfectly spiced and milky (which understandably is harder to get with almond milk over non dairy creamer or milk). Drinks a 10/10 As for the cakes I ordered the rose water cake and it's almost like a dulce De Leche with a rose theme, the cake is light but saturated with the sweet rose water and is very sweet, if you have a sweet tooth this is a must try. My fiance got the caramel one and this one is quite close to a dulce de Leche, not quite as sweet and just has a great texture overall. I decided to stop by while I was in the area, and I ordered a spinach turnover ($4.15), vegetable sambusa ($3.64), and honey comb ($5.99). They offered to heat these up for me which I agreed to, and which takes about 4 minutes. The turnover and sambusa are both a little spicy (for me, someone who can only handle a mild level of spicy), but tasty. I find the sambusa has more complex of a flavor profile, likely because there's both lentils and something else in it, whereas the turnover mainly just had the spinach flavor. The honey comb is a bread that is creamy and sweet inside. You might like this if you enjoy bagels with cream cheese, or buns with a mild-tasting dairy-based custard inside. I do wish the prices had been posted on the labels, although the prices are reasonable. They also sell fatayer, though I didn't try it since it contains meat, as well as various cakes, coffee, and other drinks. They have plenty of indoor seating and free wifi if you're looking for a place to work outside the home. read more

Hidden gem! Been here twice and will keep returning. Love supporting fellow Arab businesses. We have had the Mufawaar and the Jaban. They are both lovely and fragrant. I love how the Jaban is like a tea/coffee mix and the spices are perfect. It's like Christmas in a cup! I've never had Qishr before, but it's very interesting. We've also had their pistachio milk cake which was sooo good. Want to try all their desserts! The ambiance is so lovely and relaxing with Arabic music playing on low in the background. spacious and beautiful cafe! this place recently opened up and it's near my apartment so my friend and I had a little study date here! I was pleasantly surprised to see it poppin around 3 on a sunday! I would say it's lively but not loud; a great mix of people getting work done as well as friends hanging out and chatting. I got the pomegranate lemon drink which tasted like cranberry juice. Heyma Yemeni Coffee is located on a main and busy street, but not much foot traffic here, as it is away from the main areas where most of the students hang / walk around. Parking is street parking - I came here pretty late at night, so I was able to easily find parking right out front. The shop is a bit awkwardly situated, as both of their doors are at the ends, so it took me a minute to realized the main counter was on the other side, but they had plenty of seating areas from bar seating to booth style couches to chairs / tables. Ordering is at the front counter, if you are dining in, one of the employees will bring your drink(s) / snack(s) to your table after you order at the front. Anyway, I was originally looking for a boba or coffee shop that opened decently late with seating / wifi - I read some reviews that this was a good study spot and they did not closed, until 11 PM that night. Unfortunately, after I ordered - I settled down and was comfortable, I pulled out my laptop and tried to connect to their wifi (they even have the wifi / password on every table for your convenience) and it did not work at all (I tried 3 -4 times and doubled / tripled check the wifi password before giving up). I did not even bother checking, if they had outlets at this point. Also, it is kind of a loud cafe with a lot of kids running around, so it was not the best spot to get some work done - I was hoping that I could add this cafe to my list for a new potential study spot, but it was a miss. I did not find a drink on the menu that interested me, so I ordered one of their pastries - their Honeycomb. It is a cream cheese filled bread topped with honey. It was decently priced for the size. It was pretty good, but I wished it was a bit more fluffy / soft, as it was a bit too crispy / well toasted - there also was a decent amount of cream cheese and honey as well, so it was both savory & sweet . Overall, 3.5 - 4 stars for the pastry I tried, but 2 - 2.5 stars for my experience / the ambience. read more

After trying to find a Yemeni coffee shop to pass time in on a rainy day, we decided to try Heyma for their great looking menu. It was pretty packed for a rainy Sunday but we got lucky and found a seat. Their food is reasonably priced and so are their drink selections. We ordered the chicken turnover (thick bread with very well seasoned ground chicken and peppers inside), the börek (more cheesey than I'm used to but still good) and the beef sambusa (super flakey and flavorful!). We also ordered the Aden Tea for two. All of that came out to $22! That was a great deal considering how full we got from the food. I'm sure the vibe inside would be much more enjoyable on days when it isn't so packed, but we still enjoyed ourselves nonetheless. At a loss for words. This tiramisu was great. I don't know what they put in it. This is my second time going in ONE week. It is creamy, rich, sweet, but not too sweet, soft and melts in your mouth. The very thought of this slice of tiramisu got me through the day. It was perfectly crafted. Clearly made with love.
