Have wanted to check out this place for awhile. Had the Heyma latte with almond milk and the spices in it were unique and pleasant (cardamom, cinnamon, etc.). I am not big on sugary coffee so when asked if I wanted it sweetened, i asked for just a tiny bit and the barista said he would add 1 tablespoon of sugar. That turned out to be the perfect amount. On a rainy Saturday morning the cafe was full and people were hanging out, working, and studying. The barista was very nice as well. Really liked this place and look forward to returning...the only minus was that the latte (with almond milk) cost an unprecedented (for Berkeley, at least from what I've experienced) and eye-watering $8.77 (gulp!) so it will be only a once-in-awhile visit due to high cost...but wanted to share so that everyone can enjoy this lovely place and get a dose of Yemeni culture/coffee to brighten up the winter. read more

My friend ordered a regular baklava and I ordered a baklava cheesecake. Both were absolutely decadent! Not overly sweet. One of the best and most memorable desserts I have had in a long time! The place was a bit crowded and the line can get cramped, perhaps a system of some sort can be applied. But other than that it was a such a great experience! Reason for -2: 1. I don't like to generalize so I will state my observation and facts- second Yemeni cafe and the service/staff is unfriendly, almost like they're doing you a favor by serving you and taking an order. I hope this will improve ! 2. Prices- I'd say 0.50-$1 too high (basing on similar cafes in the neighborhood) 3. Utensils- why in the world are we using individually wrapped plastic utensils, esp in Berkeley? First of all for all those environmentally aware people that's a turn off, but secondly (and perhaps even more so for me)- it ruins the dining experience, when you have a beautiful ceramic cup of coffee or tea and then using a plastic fork for dessert- not "comme il faut." ‍ It is much easier and cheaper to wash metal Utensils than to buy plastic. Since you already have normal cups that are harder to wash, you can wash them together (or separate, whatever the best practice is). And PLEASE get compostable silverware- then it would justify the high price I noted above. Thank you! read more

Heyma is new to the neighborhood, and just opened last week. Stopped in today after seeing it when driving by these last few weeks - it's SO GOOD. The Heyma latte is bomb and the pastries are to die for. Even grabbed one to-go! They have three kinds of baklava and a lot of other treats that I'm excited to try. They also have free, reliable wifi and I was able to do some work while I enjoyed my coffee and pastries. The staff is very kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. I'll be back, often! read more

The place is very nice and the dessert there is great (we got the honey comb bread, biscoff milk cake, and pistachios milk cake). The drinks on the other hand that we had were honestly awful.. we got matcha and coffee, we took one sip and couldn't even drink any of it. But we might've just got unlucky this time. To whoever is making the drinks there, matcha powder is not meant to be put on top of a drink as a design, the powder is meant to be blended. I came here only for the coffee and decided to get the Heyma Latte since their store is called Heyma Yemeni Coffee. The staff was pretty nice and I got my coffee shortly after I ordered it. The coffee itself was really good.. but it just tasted like a really good latte to me. I couldn't taste anything different between the Heyma Latte and a normal latte I would get from a coffee store. We LOVED this place! The tea and pastries were delicious. We tried both the Yemeni tea and the Aden tea - they were perfect. Not too sweet and had great flavor. The baklava with ice cream was our absolute favorite. We never thought of trying that combo, but it's soooo good we had to go back and order a second one. The honeycomb pastry was great as well. Today was my first time and I had the best coffee...IBB. The cardamom infused coffee was just the right amount of spice. There were so many choices and next time I want to try a coffee with ginger, cardamom and cinnamon.
